HELLO WORLD WELCOME
"We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and
enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self sufficient to feel the
necessity of redeeming and preserving Grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!"

Luis Castillo is heating up He has allowed just 1 run over his last 2 starts (13 IP)
Seattle on its way to a 1-0 win over the Pirates at T-Mobile Park on Saturday night.
"Tonight, wow,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “That was exceptional.”
The fist pump is a gesture that Castillo has used regularly throughout his career, but more sparingly in 2025. An easy correlation is that his strikeouts are down -- his 20.2% K rate is a drop from 24.3% last year and 27.3% in 2023, when he was a third-
time All-Star -- but it’s also more deliberate than that.

SEATTLE -- In one epic swing on Friday afternoon, Cal Raleighreached physical territory that few right-handed power hitters have approached at T-Mobile Park, while also reaching statistical territory that remains a marvel for his historic home-run pace.
Then, for good measure, he went deep again -- because of course he did.
It’s all shaping up to be one of the all-time great seasons for a catcher, a switch-hitter, a Mariner and more.
Raleigh demolished his 34th home run in the first inning of Seattle’s 6-0 win in the series opener vs. Pittsburgh, ambushing a 3-1 fastball from left-hander Bailey Falter and sending it sailing -- a whopping Statcast-projected 433 feet -- into the third-to-last
row of the bleachers well beyond left field. Then in the sixth, Raleigh went for a follow-up with a sky-high shot that, at 381 feet, narrowly cleared the left-center-field fence and bounced into the home bullpen.
With both big swings, Raleigh tied Ken Griffey Jr. in 1998 for the most homers in a season in franchise history before the All-Star break -- while tying then surpassing his previous career best of 34 set last season, when he led all catchers in the category.
“To be mentioned with that name, with somebody who's just iconic, is a legend, is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, I'm just blessed,” Raleigh said. “I'm just trying to do the right thing and trying to keep it rolling. If I can try to be like that guy, it's a good guy to
look up to.”

Griffey isn’t on the coaching staff like franchise icons Dan Wilson (manager) and Edgar Martinez (senior director of hitting strategy), but he has been a regular confidante to Raleigh this season.
The two have shared a few phone calls and an in-person visit when the Hall of Famer was in town two weeks ago to celebrate the entry for MLS’ Seattle Sounders -- with whom he has ownership stake -- into the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
“He's pretty much like the face of the franchise, right?” Raleigh said. “Ken Griffey, Ichiro, Felix. You can throw Randy [Johnson], Alvin Davis, Edgar, Dan up there on the Mount Rushmore of Mariners. I mean, not just the Mariners, but all of baseball, right?
That iconic swing. And I think, too, is how many injuries the guy had -- so many injuries. If he was healthy, he would have smashed the [all-time] home run record, I think, so it's even more impressive.”
Wilson was on that ‘98 team with Griffey, giving him the unique front-row seat to each of these historical seasons.
“Just being in awe, like you are of Cal,” Wilson said. “You feel like one home run, you're like, 'Oh man, that's super majestic.' And then the next one is maybe even better. And it just continues. And again, I don't think for Cal -- like it was for Junior -- there
isn't a ballpark he doesn't feel like he's going to be able to leave. He's just seeing the ball well, and if he gets the barrel to it, it's got a chance.”

Cal Raleigh's two-run home run (34)
Cal Raleigh crushes a 115 mph two-run home run 433 feet to right field, scoring Julio Rodríguez to put the Mariners in front with a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning
So emphatic was the first hack that Raleigh halted for a brief stop-and-stare then slightly pinwheeled his bat down the first-base line before beginning his trot. At 115.2 mph off the bat, it was the hardest-hit ball of Raleigh’s career, for any batted ball and
from either side of the plate.

Cal Raleigh's 34th homer matches his career high ... and it's only JULY!
His second of the day, on a 1-0, low-and-in heater from Falter, was nearly as dramatic for how long it hung and the palpable anticipation for whether it had enough.
The switch-hitting Raleigh now has 14 homers batting righty -- more than any right-handed Mariners hitter and which also surpassed his previous career high from that side of the plate, also set last year.

Overall, Raleigh is now on pace for 64 homers this season, which would surpass Judge’s American League record of 62 set during his first AL MVP season in 2022. By most measures, this year’s race for that honor is a two-man show so far between Judge

Cal Raleigh to join the Home Run Derby! June 27, 2025
MLB Tonight takes a look at the breaking news on slugger Cal Raleigh joining the 2025 T-Mobile Home Run Derby and more
SEATTLE -- Cal Raleighhas crushed his way toward home run history in an epic first half of the 2025 season, and now he’ll have the chance to reach another MLB first, hoping to become the only catcher ever to win the T-Mobile Home Run Derby(ESPN).
Indeed, the Mariners backstop announced on Friday that he’ll be competing in the sport’s premier power-hitting event, set for July 14 at Truist Park in Atlanta -- a full-circle venue for Raleigh, given that he grew up just 150 miles away in North Carolina
and regularly played in the Atlanta area throughout his youth travel-ball days.
“It's really cool,” Raleigh said. “Obviously, for all my family, it'll be easy for them to get to. And friends have already been texting me and asking if I would do it. So now hopefully I can put their mind at ease a little bit.”
Raleigh’s dad, Todd, will throw to him, and he’s hoping that his younger brother, 15-year-old Todd Jr., will be behind him, catching. Todd Jr., known as “T,” is already taller than Cal at 6-foot-3.
“T” is currently playing travel ball -- in, of all places, the Atlanta suburbs -- with Todd Sr. as his coach while using Cal’s hand-me-down gear.
Cal Raleigh gets intentionally walked twice in high leverage situations against the Rangers
“As a dad, it doesn't get any better than that. It's all downhill from there,” Todd told MLB.com by phone. “To be able to be there with him on the field and have T involved, I mean, it's kind of like one of those Hallmark moments.”
Raleigh, who first publicly hinted to MLB.comearlier this month that he’d do the Derby “in a heartbeat,” is the second player to announce that he’s in, along with Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., who will be the hometown star -- much like Raleigh’s teammate,
Raleigh also hinted that he might switch-hit during the event, which would make him just the second player to do so after Adley Rutschman’s electric performancefrom both sides in 2023.

“That'd be kind of cool, but you've also got to plan it out right with the timeout,” Raleigh said, noting the Derby’s format, which allows for a 45-second timeout in each of the three regulation periods, which last three minutes apiece.
“In talking to some people, obviously right field feels a lot shorter, a lot easier to hit it out,” Raleigh said of Truist Park, which is 335 feet to left field, 385 feet to left-center field, 400 feet to center field, 375 feet to right-center field and 325 feet to right
field. “So, I mean, [batting] left is looking pretty promising, yeah. But I mean, I feel like it'd be cool to do both.”
Raleigh also intends to do a few practice rounds prior to the event, potentially with Todd Sr. visiting Seattle during the club’s next homestand.
Raleigh get MVP chants at Wrigley Field after the win
“I only take a little sabbatical from throwing during Christmas,” Todd said, before pausing and retracting. “Well, actually, I didn't -- because I was in Arizona throwing to Cal over Christmas.”
Beyond Rodríguez, whosebreakout moment toward stardom took place in his first Derby in 2022 at Dodger Stadium, Raleigh is the eighth Mariners player to participate, joining Ken Griffey Jr. (1990, 1992-94, 1997-2000), Jay Buhner (1996), Alex
Rodriguez (1998), Edgar Martinez (2000), Bret Boone (2001, 2003) and Robinson Canó (2016).
Among that group, Griffey is the only winner, having done so three times -- a record that still stands today. Raleigh will look to become both the first catcher and switch-hitter to win outright (switch-hitting Ruben Sierra also won in 1989 but in a tie).
Separate but related, Rodriguez holds the single-round record under the current format, with 41 homers in the first round in 2023.
“His mechanics, he’s really good right now,” Martinez, the Mariners’ director of hitting strategy, said of Raleigh. “He’s staying behind the ball, and when you’re staying behind the ball, you can hit the ball out front without trying to pull it.”
Raleigh was the most obvious Derby candidate to be invited, given that he’s a first-time participant, plays a unique position for a Derby contestant -- and, obviously, leads MLB with 32 homers. Over the weekend at Wrigley Field, Raleighset separate
Raleigh hasn’t officially been named an All-Star yet, but he ranked second (3,040,594) to only Aaron Judge in total votes among American League players in the final tally of the Phase 1 ballot, which closed Thursday. Phase 2,the finalists phase, begins at
9 a.m. PT on Monday.
He was already a fan favorite in Seattle, but Raleigh's national profile has skyrocketed in the three months since he signed a six-year, $105 millionextension with the Mariners just before Opening Day.
Fans who don’t know Raleigh by now certainly will come Derby time.

What Pete Carroll had to say on Marshawn Lynch’s ‘Get Got Pod’
“I still love Earl, he doesn’t love me” was one of the more notable quotes from Pete in his conversation with Marshawn Lynch and Michael Robinson.
By Mookie Alexander@mookiealexander
It’s still taking some getting used to, but former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is now in charge of the Las Vegas Raiders. After running out the remainder of his Seahawks contract in an advisory role, Carroll jumped at the chance
to return to coaching.
Carroll is slowly but surely doing more media rounds after staying out of the spotlight last year, and his latest stop is on Marshawn Lynch and Michael Robinson’s ‘Get Got Pod’ podcast. I must admit that Carroll is not the easiest person to
transcribe (neither for humans nor AI), but I’ve pulled out some snippets of interest to Seahawks fans.
On staying in contact with his former players, including Earl Thomas
“I kind of keep track with everybody as best I can, and for those guys just to be available if they’ve got questions, they got thoughts, they got whatevers. I’m not expecting that I got any jewels of wisdom for them. I just want to support
them and love them up as they’re going through it, but it was my gift—they gave the gift to me that to kind of just stay with them you know.
“What happened and what you guys know too, because we’ve been through this together and when we go through this thing together, you know there’s a connection that’s made that doesn’t fall away. It doesn’t go apart unless you’re talking
to Earl [Thomas] or something like that. I still love Earl, he doesn’t love me.”
On his Seahawks departure
“There came a time late in that last season with about four or five games to go and I went into John [Schneider]’s office. I said, ‘John you know we’re coming up the end of the season here,’ and at the time we didn’t know you know how
good we were going to do, because we won four or five of the last six or something like that.
“And I said, ‘You know there’s a lot of changes that are coming potentially, and you and I aren’t looking at these changes probably the same way.’ I thought we were really close [to contending], and I love Bobby [Wagner], and I love
Quandre [Diggs] and [Tyler Lockett] and all the guys. I wanted to keep going with those guys and I knew that he was likely thinking differently (he was).
“I had always been in charge the whole time and I had always said to John that when I leave I’m hoping that I’ll be able to help you be the general manager and have this be your gig. So I said, “This may be that time. Maybe why don’t you
talk to ownership and see if you’re sitting in the right spot where they would give you the chance to do that, then maybe it’s time for to move it on.” And so that was really the conversation.
“I couldn’t quit on the fellas, you know. So I just had to kind of eat it—you know how it came across—you’re asking me still you didn’t know what happened. But John and I, we had been partners in this thing and to me that head
coach/general manager thing is by far the most crucial relationship in the NFL, maybe most professional sports. I always wanted John to be the best GM in the NFL or in professional sports, and I was going to promote him to be that. That
was the way we were getting married in a sense in this job. Nobody would know who’s calling the shots or who how we did it; it was just going to be the Seattle way.
“And so it worked you know it worked great for us and we had a blast doing it. But I kind of had that promise all along that you know someday you’ll be the guy and I’ll be getting out of here knowing it was going to come sometime. So it
just kind of worked out where they were okay about it. Jody [Allen] didn’t like the thought of firing me and so we worked out a thing where we talked about consulting and that kind of stuff, but soon as they started going, I couldn’t. It was
too creepy for me to be around that building and be close to those guys.”
On reuniting with Geno Smith
“Geno to me is like getting Marshawn. Because there’s a connection of the impact that the guy can have on everybody else. The years we spent together, the years when he wasn’t playing, were the most significant years to me because he
exemplified this mentality that I had never seen anybody else.
“He thought every play he was getting he was going to be in. And somehow he held on to that kind of focus. He didn’t lose it, he didn’t ever waver. Every play that the other guy was taking it might be his last play and he needs to be ready
to go. He’d been through some pain and some hardship and stuff like that but by the time we got him he he came with this mentality that—anyway so when he finally got a chance he did great. you know and a lot of people were surprised
shoot he was Comeback Player of the Year the first year that he that he started after Russell left. So to get him to come too was just so significant.”
On his relationship with Russell Wilson
“We’re doing fine. Like I told you guys, I I stay in contact with the guys as best I can. Russ was one to call you. And so I heard I’ve heard a lot from him and I stayed in contact with him throughout, with the same thought of just trying to
help him—Geno and I were talking last year—just trying to help and be there for him and continue to support them. Nobody knows those guys as well as I do. So if I could be there for him or answer some questions or kick him in the butt or
whatever.
“Really there was a chance that with Russ coming up in free agency that, you know, we need a quarterback so there was conversation you know in that shorter amount of time there before we got Geno that there could be a shot.”
There’s a ton more in here, including Michael Robinson seemingly revealing that DK Metcalf wanted to go to the Raiders before he was dealt to Pittsburgh. Watch the full podcast in the video below, which starts with Marshawn saying, “They
call came from your nuts though, you feel me?” Be on the lookout for a little gesture Carroll makes as far as why he left USC...

players in it, including Cal Raleigh behind the plate. With a league-leading 27 home runs, Raleigh is a near-lock to make the team. Who else could join him in Atlanta?
Cal Raleigh should be a unanimous selection
Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images
The Mariners struggled on offense last year, costing them a spot in the playoffs. This year, they have a higher batting average and OPS as a team, but the biggest difference is Cal Raleigh. The catcher has 27 homers after a grand slam on Tuesday against
the Red Sox. His OPS is over 200 points above last year's total, and his bWAR is closing in on his 2024 total. While he has never been an All-Star before, Raleigh should comfortably be the American League starting catcher.
Raleigh is outshining every American League catcher offensively, just a year after winning the Gold Glove at the position. The Mariners' pitching has been solid again this year, and could be sending All-Stars to Atlanta, too. Raleigh deserves some credit for
that, as well, as the everyday catcher. With very little competition, this should be a no-brainer.
Andres Muñoz has been dominant for the Mariners
The Mariners have a great starting rotation that gets a lot of attention, but they may also have the best closer in baseball. Andres Muñoz has a 1.26 ERA with 18 saves in 22 opportunities, dominating hitters all over the American League. He was an All-
Star last year, when his numbers were not nearly as good. He had 15 saves with a 1.41 ERA and a 1.000 WHIP. With a struggling team, he has not gotten many opportunities lately. But when he does, he almost always takes advantage.
Muñoz was supposed to get big competition for the AL All-Star closer role this year from the Yankees' new addition Devin Williams. But Williams was dreadful to start the year, losing his role to Luke Weaver. And then, Weaver got hurt, ending his All-Star
bid. Will Vest from the Tigers could get a nod, but not at the cost of Muñoz, who has done enough to retain his bid.
Luis Castillo should get another All-Star bid
Of the Mariners' starting pitchers, the elder statesman has been the best so far. Castillo is 4-5 with a 3.38 ERA, even after three shaky starts in a row. Outside of Logan Gilbert, who has only made seven starts due to an injury, those are the best numbers
on the squad. Castillo has made three All-Star appearances in his career, including one in his first full season in Seattle. This would be his second in the AL to match his two with Cincinnati.
The Mariners are built on starting pitching, and Castillo was a big addition to their team in 2022. With so many young star pitchers in their rotation, Castillo is leaned on to be the steady veteran and lead the group. He fits that role perfectly, and his
numbers show that as well. And at just 32 years old, he still has some prime years ahead of him.
Other potential Mariners All-Star bids
The Mariners have two outfielders who could cut through a crowded field to make the All-Star Game. Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena have both been solid this year, with OPS+ numbers of 115 and 119, respectively. Rodriguez has played a solid
JP Crawford should also be considered among the shortstops in the American League. Gunnar Henderson has had a rough go, Anthony Volpe's offensive numbers are not strong enough, and Corey Seager has been hurt. But Zach Neto, Jeremy Pena, and
Bobby Witt Jr create a tough group for Crawford to break through. He has an .824 OPS with 29 RBIs.

Sam Darnold on final games in Minnesota: "We laid an egg on offense"
Story by Mike Florio
Quarterback Sam Darnold's lone season as Minnesota's starter was magical, until it wasn't.
At 14-2 and with one game in Detroit with the No. 1 seed on the line, Darnold's chariot became pumpkinized. Then, in the wild-card round, the orange menace spread to the rest of the team.
“For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense,” Darnold recently told Mike Silver of TheAthletic.com. “And I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little
pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don’t win the whole thing, you failed."
He's right. There's only one trophy. And the better a team performs in the regular season, the more prominent the failure seems when it happens.
“I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you," Darnold said. "I feel I didn’t play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would’ve been able to give the team a chance.”
Darnold's play was more conspicuous in Week 18, when the Vikings repeatedly had chances and Darnold repeatedly misfired
o what happened in those two losses that turned a 14-2 start into an 0-2 finish?
“I feel like L.A. did very similar things on third down to what Detroit did to us,” Darnold said. “They played man and tried to play some ‘robber’ stuff, and that just gave us some troubles. It gave me some troubles, personally.”
As Darnold tries to learn from that experience, it sounds as if he'll be more committed to running with the ball in 2025 if/when his options are stymied in the passing game.
“[Kevin O'Connell] and those guys in Minnesota did such a good job — and we do a great job here as well — of giving me answers if they take options away,” Darnold told Silver. “Like, just go through your progressions and work your feet and if it’s not
there take off and run — because there’s no one accounting for the quarterback, unless they play a spy or whatever."
Whatever happens in 2025, the gains Darnold made in the first 16 games of the 2024 season were undermined by the regressions of the final two. And even if he gets off to a great start again this year, the real question will be whether he shows up when
the lights are the brightest and the stakes are the highest.
