With Lou Piniella watching, Mariners manager Dan Wilson gets ejected
Sep 2, 2025, 5:48 PM
Dan Wilson was witness to the most memorable manager ejections in Seattle Mariners history when he played for Lou Piniella.
On Tuesday night, it was Piniella who witnessed Wilson get the heave-ho.
Josh Naylor is giving the Mariners every reason to re-sign him
Wilson was ejected for the second time in his managerial career, getting tossed by home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez in the top of the third inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The ejection came after an 0-0 high fastball to rookie second baseman Cole Young was called a strike. Per Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports, Wilson was ejected after defending a Mariners player who made a comment in the dugout.
That was presumably right fielder Dominic Canzone, who was ejected along with Wilson. Luke Raley replaced Canzone in the game.
Piniella, who is a Tampa native and visited the Mariners before the game, was shown in the crowd at Steinbrenner Field on the ROOT Sports TV broadcast after Wilson’s ejection. While also a former Rays manager, he seemed to be on the Mariners’ side in this case, throwing his hands in disgust after Wilson’s ejection.
Was Wilson’s ejection a tribute to Piniella? Was it on purpose to fire up a Mariners team that has scuffled on the road? Hard to say, though the M’s did respond in the fourth inning with three solo home runs off of Rays All-Star pitcher and Spokane native Drew Rasmussen to take a 3-2 lead. That included back-to-back shots
by Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez.
Wilson was previously ejected on May 25 during a loss at Houston.
Piniella, who managed Wilson with the Mariners in the 1990s and early 2000s, is considered the greatest manager in club history. He led the M’s to an 840-711 record from 1993 through 2003, taking the team to the playoffs four times and winning a pair of American League Manager of the Year awards.
Piniella is known perhaps just as much for his fiery personality and ejection-worthy tantrums as his winning ways in Seattle. Of his 64 career ejections as a manager over 23 years with five different teams, the majority – 28 – came with the Mariners.

Timeline of the Roman and Byzantine Emperors
Rome. The state that grew from tiny settlements around the Palatine Hill in central Italy into a vast empire that ruled most of western Europe and the Mediterranean for centuries and set the framework for the states of today. Let us embark on a journey
through time, from Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, to the final ruler of the Byzantine Empire. Along the way, we'll encounter both great and terrible emperors, and witness golden and tumultuous ages. The map shows the territory controlled by the
emperor at the end of his reign. Co-ruling emperors are connected by a line.
Belisarius: The Battle of Rome (3/6)
In the 6th century 534 AD, during the reign of Emperor Justinian, the Roman Empire experienced an extraordinary resurgence, reconquering lands - including Italy, North Africa and Rome itself - that had been lost to the 'barbarians' a century before. Leading
these campaigns, a brilliant Roman general named Flavius Belisarius - a skilled tactician, inspirational leader, pragmatic and humane.
There was no word or report during the game on the severity of Garver's injury or if he's expected to miss an extended period of time. It was just the third game for Garver since June 20. He was hitting .300 (3-for-10) with two home runs, three runs and five RBIs on the team's current road trip.
Seattle doesn't have a third catcher currently on the active roster. Infielder Leo Rivas was the team's emergency catcher in situations like Thursday, but was optioned to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on May 31.
If Garver is out for an extended period of time, the Mariners could bring up top 100 prospect Harry Ford from Tacoma or Blake Hunt, another catcher currently on the Rainiers roster.

Seattle Mariners' Catcher Cal Raleigh Just Continues to Make History at Every Turn
With regards to Seattle Mariners' catcher Cal Raleigh, seemingly every day results in a history-making event.
That was certainly true on Monday as Raleigh went 2-for-5 with a home run in an 11-2 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.
The home run was his 32nd homer of the year, which is the most in major league baseball. He joins Ken Griffey Jr. as the only Mariners players to ever hit 30 or more before the All-Star break, and he's now homered in four straight games.
Per @OptaSTATS:
And per Cameron Van Til of Seattle Sports 710:
Cal Raleigh just became the seventh player in MLB history with at least 32 home runs in the first 77 games of his team's season.
The others? Babe Ruth (twice), Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr. and Luis Gonzalez.
And from Gary Hill Jr. of the Mariners' broadcast team:
Cal Raleigh Homers:
June: 10
May: 12
March/April: 10
The first Seattle Mariner AND Catcher in MLB history to hit double-digit homers in 3 straight months
