Hummingbirds are birds that comprise the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring in the 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in) range. Indeed, the smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 5-cm Bee Hummingbird. They hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12–80 times per second (depending on the species). They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings, which sometimes sounds like bees or other insects. To conserve energy while they sleep or when food is scarce, they have the ability to go into a hibernation-like state (torpor) where their metabolic rate is slowed to 1/15th of its normal rate. When the nights get colder, their body temperature can drop significantly and thus slow down their heart and breathing rate, thus burning much less energy overnight. As the day heats back up, the hummingbird's body temperature will come back up and they resume their normal activity. They are also the only group of birds with the ability to fly backward. They can fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph). Individuals from some species of hummingbirds weigh less than a penny.

Mystery masterpiece revealed as Rembrandt self-portrait

A painting donated to Britain's National Trust three years ago has been identified as a self-portrait of Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Mystery masterpiece is by Rembrandt

London (CNN) -- A mystery portrait donated to a British heritage charity as part of a mixed lot of paintings has been identified as a work by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn -- worth more than $30 million.

The picture, dated 1635, shows the then 29-year-old artist in a black velvet cape and hat decorated with outsized ostrich feathers. It was given to the National Trust in 2010, along with four other artworks.

At the time it was thought to have been painted by one of Rembrandt's pupils, but new tests and research by leading Rembrandt scholar Ernst van de Wetering have shown it is more likely to be by the teacher himself.

"Over the years, it has gone back and forward," David Taylor, the National Trust's curator of paintings and sculpture, told CNN. "Decades ago it was thought to be a Rembrandt, and then the experts said no, that it was by someone in his studio instead." Rembrandt Research Project

This is the last Original B&W, Pen & Ink piece I did, I call it, "Help Me". you have to love irony! before all the cancer started.

Kobe Bryant went down with a "severe ankle sprain" in the final seconds of the Los Angeles Lakers' loss on Wednesday night. While trying to fight back in a tight game on the road against the Atlanta Hawks, Kobe Bryant pulled up for a baseline jumper and missed. But more importantly, Bryant fell down awkwardly and appeared to roll his ankle as he landed.

Atlanta's Dahntay Jones was playing tight defense on the Lakers superstar. But some could say that the defense was a little bit too tight. Jones drifts into Bryant's landing area and somewhat forces him to adjust his feet as he lands.

Kobe himself has posted a picture of his swollen ankle.

After 143 days in space, astronauts return
7

Three return from space station

After 143 days in space, three astronauts will depart the International Space Station late Thursday for a return flight to Earth in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, NASA said.

One American and two Russians will land in Kazakhstan less than four hours after undocking from the ISS. They are scheduled to land at 10:57 a.m. local time Friday (11:57 p.m. ET Thursday).

Russian space modules are capable of landing on land and do not require a body of water to splash down in. Two parts of the spacecraft will burn up in the atmosphere, leaving only the Descent Module carrying the three crew members, according to NASA.

Illinois Sinkhole Swallows Golfer

But Mark Mihal is OK  By Evann Gastaldo, Newser Staff

(Newser) – Florida isn't the only state dealing with sinkhole troubles: On an Illinois golf course Friday, golfer Mark Mihal suddenly dropped into one. "I was standing in the middle of the fairway," he tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Then, all of a sudden, before I knew it, I was underground." He was rescued from the 18-foot-deep, 10-foot-wide hole by friends and the golf course general manager; one friend had to climb down and tie a rope around Mihal's waist, because he dislocated his shoulder in the fall.

It took less than 20 minutes to get him out, but there was concern that the hole might grow or collapse. The Florida man recently lost in a sinkhole "certainly went through my mind when I was down there," Mihal says. “It looked like it was more room to go down [in the hole]." Sinkholes are common around St. Louis, and one geologist says they're usually visible—but this one wasn't. So will Mihal ever golf again? "Sure," he says, although perhaps maybe not at the same course. (Click to read about the latest sinkhole plaguing Florida.)

  Happy Daylight saving time (DST)—

also summer time in several countries in British English, and European official terminology (see Terminology)—is the practice of advancing clocks so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Typically clocks are adjusted forward one hour near the start of spring and are adjusted backward in autumn.

The modern idea of daylight saving was first proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson  and it was first implemented during the First World War. Many countries have used it at various times since then. Although most of the United States used DST throughout the 1950s and 1960s, DST use expanded following the 1970s energy crisis and has generally remained in use in North America and Europe since that time.

Asteroid to fly past Earth this weekend

Spinning asteroid 4

An asteroid the size of a city block will pass by Earth this weekend, but have no fear: There's no danger of it hitting our planet.

The 80-meter wide asteroid makes its closest approach to Earth on Saturday afternoon in the United States. It will be about 975,000 kilometers (604,500 miles) away, said Don Yeomans, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. That's about 2 1/2 times the distance from the Earth to the moon.
