A night of horror 245 killed in Brazil nightclub fire

Most of those killed appeared to have died of smoke inhalation. Many people were trampled in the panic to leave. There was a pyrotechnic show going on, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. FULL STORY

States suffer through freezing temperatures

Atlanta (CNN) -- The Deep South and winter don't play nice together. Throw frozen precipitation into the mix and you have a real mess.

The same brutal arctic cold front that's already delivered sub-zero temperatures across the upper Midwest and Northeast is forecast to bring ice and freezing rain to the South and Mid-Atlantic states on Friday.

Southern cities like Atlanta are not prepared for wintry weather because it comes so seldom. Southern drivers have little experience driving on the stuff.

"Temperatures as meager as -40 seems absurd," said reader Ben Edwards. "That's what one would call a warm day up here in Fairbanks, Alaska."

Witness: I heard five or six gunshots

(CNN) -- Students ducked under desks and ran for cover during a shooting at a community college in Texas on Tuesday that left three people wounded.

"I just started hearing people shouting and yelling and running," said Amanda Vasquez, a freshman who was in English class when the shooting erupted at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College in Houston. "I immediately tried to get under the desk, tried to hide ...

"I called my mom as soon as I could just because you never know. I didn't know if this was going to be the last time I was going to be able to speak with her. So I just wanted to make sure she knew that I loved her," Vasquez told CNN's AC360°.

Lone Star College student Brittany Mobley told CNN affiliate KHOU that she saw the shooting.

When a SWAT team arrived at the lieutenant's home, they found him waiting outside with what was believed to be a gun.

(CNN) -- Even for stone-faced, seen-it-all-before officers, the act that took place at a police lieutenant's Las Vegas-area home Monday was deeply distressing.

The 52-year-old lawman, police said, killed his wife and child, called 911 to say he was burning his house down and warned he would take the life of anyone who tried to stop him. Then he waited.

When a SWAT team arrived at the lieutenant's Boulder City home, they found him outside with what looked like a handgun.

Officers asked him to drop the weapon -- commands the lieutenant must have screamed many times before in his 20-year career. He ignored them and ducked back into the blazing home.

It was then, police believe, that he killed himself.

Baseball great Stan 'The Man' Musial dies at 92

(CNN) -- He was simply "The Man."

Stanley Frank Musial made a name for himself as one of baseball's best hitters of all time on the field, as well as one of its greatest, most dignified ambassadors off it.

And now "Stan the Man" is gone. Musial died at his Ladue, Missouri, home surrounded by family, the Cardinals said in a statement. According to a post on his Twitter page, which is maintained by his grandson Brian Musial Schwarze, Musial died at 5:45 p.m. (6:45 p.m. ET) Saturday of natural causes. He was 92.

"We have lost the most beloved member of the Cardinals family," said William DeWitt Jr., the club's chairman. "Stan Musial was the greatest player in Cardinals history and one of the best players in the history of baseball."

Official Algerian radio: 7 hostages of unspecified nationalities, 11 kidnappers killed in military attack on gas plant.

(CNN) -- Seven hostages and 11 militants were killed Saturday when the Algerian military launched an attack on a remote Algerian gas plant overrun by a terrorist group, according to state media.

The Algerian Radio report did not specify the nationalities of those killed.

The number of foreign hostages is still unknown four days into the crisis, which began when Islamist militants attacked the sprawling site Wednesday.

State media said Friday that 30 or more foreigners were unaccounted for.

ATLANTA – Russell Wilson and Fran Tarkenton were born in Richmond, Va., and share comparable skills that have prompted season-long comparisons between the Seahawks’ rookie quarterback and the Hall of Fame quarterback.

But they never had met, until Saturday.

Prior to the team’s walkthrough at the Georgia Tech indoor practice facility, the Seahawks’ final on-field session before Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff game against the Falcons at the Georgia Dome, Wilson spent several minutes talking – yes, eye-to-eye – with Tarkenton.

“I’d never met him before, but I’ve watched some film on him and watched him a lot in the past,” Wilson said after the walkthrough. “He’s one of the best quarterbacks to ever play, and he opened doors for me.”

Despite being on opposite sides of the country, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis watched the end of the Atlanta Falcons-Seattle Seahawks game together. On their phones.

Willis told 95.7 The Game on Monday that he and Lewis used the app FaceTime on their phones to watch the final minutes of the game together:

"I was on my way home, he FaceTimed me and we watching the end and how crazy it was," Willis said on 95.7 The Game.

Each of their teams won impressive playoff games Saturday, so both were likely off Sunday.

On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks suffered their most heartbreaking loss of 2012 -- primarily because it ended their Cinderella season. The 'Hawks had a terribly slow start in the divisional round, entering halftime looking at a 20-0 deficit.

Danny Kelly of Field Gulls had this post-game write-up following the loss:

The Seahawks came back from a 20-point 4th quarter deficit to take the lead with 0:34 seconds remaining, but the Falcons countered with two quick pass plays after a nice kickoff return, and these three big gains put them to within field goal range. Matt Bryant kicked the 49-yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining, and Seattle's subsequent hail mary throw as the clock ran out was intercepted in the endzone by Julio Jones.

The Seahawks started slow in this one, and that's an understatement. The defense was gashed on the ground and through the air, and the offense struggled once in the redzone, and by halftime, Seattle found themselves down 20-0. It seemed like anything that could go wrong, was going wrong, and my hopes were not high as the Hawks took the field for the 2nd half.
