Neil Armstrong - Buzz Aldrin - Micheal Collin

Buzz Aldrin @TheRealBuzz

I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning Neil's passing - a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew.

Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, declaring "one giant leap for mankind." He died Saturday at the age of 82. FULL STORY

Image: Moon footprint

In this photo from July 20, 1969, a footprint left by one of the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission shows in the soft, powder surface of the moon.

When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away.

Tony Stewart Doesn't Care About His Helmet

Instead, we found our answer on Lap 332. And what an answer it was.

Wreck_medium

Stewart and Matt Kenseth got together and well ... bad things happened for Stewart, who was crowded against the outer wall on the turn before. Stewart, however, wasn't content to just walk away from the crash. No, he wasn't happy with Kenseth about the way things went down and had to let him know about it.

So he threw his helmet. At Kenseth's car. Because that solves everything. Note the crow-hop into the throw!

Kenseth1_medium

And from the inside of Kenseth's car.

Kenseth2_medium

Really, this was perfect though. Short track racing is already heated and Stewart isn't the most calm man around. He added later, when asked about the helmet, "I don't give a crap. Hell with the helmet."

Thames may have actually made this catch. But with a runner on second, it didn't really matter. As our two combatants laid on the ground, the run scored. And the Mariners lost the game, 9-8.

Let's try that in slow-mo:

So yeah, fun game! Pretty great night for baseball, and this is the cherry on top. When two outfielders completely wreck each other, allowing in the winning run, we can probably just call it a day.

NARWHAL - Enchanted Learning

The narwhal, or narwhale, Monodon monoceros, is a medium-sized toothed whale that lives year-round in the Arctic. One of two living species of whale in the Monodontidae family, along with the beluga whale, narwhal males are distinguished by a long, straight, helical tusk, actually an elongated upper left canine. Found primarily in Canadian Arctic and Greenlandic waters, rarely south of 65°N latitude, the narwhal is a uniquely specialized Arctic predator. In the winter, it feeds on benthic prey, mostly flatfish, at depths of up to 1500 m under dense pack ice. Narwhals have been harvested for over a thousand years by Inuit people in northern Canada and Greenland for meat and ivory, and a regulated subsistence hunt continues to this day. While populations appear stable, the narwhal has been deemed particularly vulnerable to climate change due to a narrow geographical range and specialized diet.

AMERICA'S CHOICE 2012
Artists show what power looks like to them.

I can paint that! Wait, no I can't! Amateur artist messes up century-old artwork

Would you think to match your home-grown painting skills against a classical artist? Probably not, but that's just what a well-intentioned woman in her 80s did recently in Spain.

Centro De Estudios Borjanos via EPA

The picture on the left shows the original work, the one in the middle the pre-renovated fresco and the one on the right shows the damaged painting.

The three photos above tell the tale. The image on the left is the original work, a century-old oil painting of Christ called "Ecce Homo (Behold the Man)" that was painted on a column inside a church near Zaragoza, Spain, by artist Elias Garcia Martinez.

Over the years, the work began to deteriorate, as shown in the second image. According to the Centre de Estudios Borjanos, the unnamed amateur artist (without permission from the church, needless to say) thought she could improve the work and set to work with paints and brushes. The third picture is the result.

The BBC reports that the woman realized her mistake and contacted Juan Maria Ojeda, a city council member in charge of cultural affairs for the area. "I think she had good intentions," Ojeda told the BBC.

A team of art restoration experts is reportedly examining the painting, will quiz the woman on what materials she used in her attempt, and will figure out how best to proceed.

"If we can't fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting," Ojeda told the BBC.

The BBC Europe correspondent described the painting's current state as resembling "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic."

While Martinez's work was not considered especially valuable, the BBC reports that the painter's granddaughter had just donated a sum of money to restore the peeling image. Apparently the helpful would-be artist took it upon herself to get involved without knowing that, but if she had just waited, the work would have been fixed properly.

What do you think of the resulting artwork? Do you feel sorry for the woman, or should she have known better? Tell us on Facebook.

Navy SEAL writes book on Bin Laden raid

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The author of the yet-to-be-published book "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden" wrote it under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The book's publisher said the special operations forces team member did not want to reveal his name to protect himself and his family.

But only a day after the New York Times first reported the book was coming out, Fox News reported the author's real name on its website and posted photos of him in combat gear.

'No one really cares': US deaths in Afghanistan hit 2,000 in 'forgotten' war

By NBC News staff and wire reports

KABUL, Afghanistan -- It was once President Barack Obama's "war of necessity." Now, it's America's forgotten war.

The Afghan conflict generates barely a whisper on the U.S. presidential campaign trail. It's not a hot topic at the office water cooler or in the halls of Congress — even though more than 80,000 American troops are still fighting here and dying at a rate of one a day.

Americans show more interest in the economy and taxes than the latest suicide bombings in a different, distant land. They're more tuned in to the political ad war playing out on television than the deadly fight still raging against the Taliban. Earlier this month, protesters at the Iowa State Fair chanted "Stop the war!" They were referring to one purportedly being waged against the middle class.

Aug 25, 1939:The Wizard of Oz debuts

 Wizard of Oz

On this day in 1939, The Wizard of Oz, which will become one of the best-loved movies in history, opens in theaters around the United States.

Based on the 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), the film starred Judy Garland as the young Kansas farm girl Dorothy, who, after being knocked unconscious in a tornado, dreams about following a yellow brick road, alongside her dog Toto, to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz. Along the way, Dorothy encounters a cast of characters, including the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked Witch of the West. Though the scenes in Kansas were shot in traditional black and white, Oz appears in vivid Technicolor, a relatively new film process at the time. Nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category, The Wizard of Oz lost to the Civil War-era epic Gone With the Wind. The Wizard of Oz won a Best Song Oscar for “Over the Rainbow,” which became one of Garland’s signature hits. Garland won a special award at that year’s Oscar ceremony, for Best Juvenile Performer.
