On July 31, 1975, James Riddle Hoffa, one of the most influential American labor leaders of the 20th century, disappears in Detroit, Michigan, never to be heard from again. Though he is popularly believed to have been the victim of a Mafia hit, conclusive evidence was never found, and Hoffa's death remains shrouded in mystery to this day.

If there is one song that has been played more times by more bands in more garages than any ever written, it is probably "Louie Louie," The Kingsmen's classic 1966 hit. But if any other song warrants a place in the conversation, it would be "Wild Thing," the three-chord masterpiece that became a #1 hit for The Troggs on this day in 1966 and instantly took its rightful place in the rock-and-roll canon.

After the fall of the House of Assad, could Syria be worse?

Recent events have left Syria watchers near breathless: government loss of control of border crossings into Iraq and Turkey, rebels temporarily holding portions of Damascus, the unexplained movement of some of Syria's extensive arsenal of chemical weapons, and fighting spreading to the streets of the traditional Alawite stronghold of Aleppo.

Syrian opposition: Areas of Aleppo see heaviest violence in 16 months
By the CNN Wire Staff updated 7:02 AM EDT, Sat July 28, 2012

(CNN) -- Parts of Syria's largest city saw the fiercest clashes yet in the country's 16-month crisis on Saturday, opposition activists said.

Government forces fired "nonstop shelling" early Saturday in Aleppo, where at least 10 people were killed, the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria said.

Across the country, at least 53 people were killed in fresh violence Saturday, including 17 in and around the capital of Damascus, LCC said.

Seattle icon J.P. Patches dies at 84

The J.P. Patches show ran from 1958 to 1981.

JP_Patches

Chris Wedes, who performed around the Puget Sound as the clown J.P Patches since 1958, died on Sunday, a family member confirmed. He was 84 years old.

The J.P. Patches show began airing in Seattle in 1958 and ran through 1981. At one point, the audience for the daily television program reached 100,000 children. Wedes continued to perform as Patches until his retirement last year.

Wedes came to Seattle from Minneapolis, where he had been performing as J.P. Patches for a year. His show was among the first that KIRO TV ever aired. Viewers were known as Patches Pals.

"I was a Patches Pal, I forget how old I was when I was on the show for my Birthday, & JP gave me a present, a diving sub! put a little tablet in & it dives down & surface up, way cool for that time. (I known I giving away my age :) I've never forgot that! R.I.P. JP'

F.Y.I. The need to read

pentingnya membaca

All of us need to read. Not only can it be fun, but it's good for our brains! Our brain processes information obtained from different media in different ways. It remains fairly passive when dealing with video on a screen, but when you read, your brain kicks into high gear and works in an entirely different way. In a book on this subject titled Amusing Ourselves to Death, author Neil Postman asserts that the way your brain works while reading is not just different, it's better.

Reading requires interactive, intellectual involvement. Watching a screen does not. It's as simple as that.

"Any stocks of (weapons of mass destruction) or any unconventional weapon that the Syrian Arab Republic possesses would never be used against civilians or against the Syrian people during this crisis at any circumstance, no matter how the crisis would evolve," ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told reporters.

The killing of three top officials by an explosion on Wednesday has left Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at a "decision point," a senior U.S. official told CNN.

"From an intelligence point of view the regime has to decide: fight or flight," the senior official said.

Another senior official from the Middle East region underscored that assessment, telling CNN the attacks indicate "strong cracks in the regime."

"This is a potential tipping point," the Middle East official said.

‘I’m just a lad from Leicester whose parents sent him to piano lessons’

Writer Lee Marlow had been working on a big Jon Lord feature for us. He interviewed him last Monday, handed the feature in yesterday morning – and then found out about Lord’s death at the end of the day. Here he gives a personal response to the ‘Peter Ustinov of rock’.

“Hellooo old son,” he said when – finally – he picked up the phone on Monday night. “How the devil are you?”

He was born in Leicester, Jon Lord, but he didn’t have the trademark clipped vowels of someone from the East Midlands’ biggest city. He had the arresting boom of someone who had trodden the boards, which, of course, he had before he climbed behind that Hammond organ and thrilled millions of people all over the world with his brilliance, his originality and his musical dexterity.

It had taken what had seemed like an age to get to this point. Dates had been arranged and then cancelled. Times were pencilled in and then rubbed out. Phone calls were made, but calls went unanswered. It was excruciating. Yet, you know, this was Jon Lord. And he was suffering from cancer. What do you do? I tell you what you do. You swallow your indignation and you hang on. Because it’s Jon Lord. Finally, it happened.

“Sorry about all that,” he said. “When you rang the other afternoon, I was asleep.” He doesn’t make a habit of napping in the day, he said. But it had been a tough day after another tough day.

He apologised again and hoped I understood. I did. I felt bad for nearly waking him up.

They say that you should never meet your heroes; that they’ll only disappoint you with their egos and their arrogance and their unshakable sense that everything – including you, especially you, writer boy –revolves around them.

But, really, that’s just bollocks. Because for every rock star, football player, author and politician who is like that – and there’s few, believe me – there’s Jon Lord. Jon Lord was a gent.

Former Seahawks QB Jeff Kemp Remembers and Honors Grant Feasel

Former NFL QB Jeff Kemp, who played for the Seahawks from 1987-91, remembers and honors teammate Grant Feasel, the former Seahawks center who passed away over the weekend.

By Jeff Kemp

Seahawks

Grant Feasel was our center and my roommate on road trips for most of my years on the Seahawks in the late 80′s and early 90′s. I am so saddened at his loss and our prayers go out to all his family, especially Cyndy, Sean, Sarah and Spencer.

Grant was the quintessential sacrificial warrior. He wrapped himself up in the duty to clear the way for and protect his teammates. He took his job so seriously. Our families grew up together and Grant deeply loved his family. He had a great sense of humor but never during the heat of battle.

Grant was deeply conscientious and took his job incredibly seriously. As a holder for field goals, I would always ask him to snap hard-to-handle snaps to me after practice so I could prepare for the toughest situations, but Grant would never allow himself to snap anything but perfect snaps. Part of that was his desire to never allow coaches to see him at less than his dependable best.

I had dinner with Grant in Dallas about two years ago and we laughed uproariously at our joint misfortune of having had been a part of a classic NFL blooper which nearly gave Coach Chuck Knox a heart attack. One game against Denver in the noisy Kingdome, Grant and I crossed signals on when to snap the ball. The ball blasted me in the earhole of my helmet while I was looking at kicker Norm Johnson to see if he was ready. The ball bounced around the field and a pile of Broncos dove on me as I scrambled to cover the ball. Grant reminded me at that dinner that he could never forget Chuck Knox’s opening line of his next week’s talk to our team. Chuck told us that in his last days when he’d be confined to a nursing bed, connected to an “iron lung,” his last thoughts on this Earth would be, “Why in the heck did Grant Feasel snap that ball into Jeff Kemp’s head in our game against Denver?”

Grant Feasel was a consummate football player, a trustworthy teammate, and a good man… a man who loved his family.

At least one person was killed and 10 injured in freak wave of tornadoes that swept norther and western Poland, the BBC reports.

At least 100 homes were destroyed in Kujawy-Pomorze and Wielkopolska provinces in Sunday's unsually severe weather.

The BBC, quoting local media reports, says a 60-year-old man who was killed died after being crushed beneath his collapsing house.

Almost a thousand acres of trees were flattened in Tuchola Forest, a national park.

Andrew Jackson became the seventh president of the United States on March 4, 1839. After his inaugural address, "Jackson closed with a prayer—for order and for guidance, for himself and for the Union.

Franklin stated: "In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for the divine protection! Our prayers, sir, were heard; and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favor"

Solar storm barreling toward Earth this weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The space weather forecast for Earth looks a bit stormy this weekend, but scientists said not to worry. A solar storm was due to arrive Saturday morning and last through Sunday, slamming into Earth's magnetic field. Scientists said it will be a minor event and they have notified power grid operators, airlines and other potentially affected parties.

"This isn't the mother of all anything," said forecaster Joe Kunches at the government's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo. "We don't see any ill effects to any systems."

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Farmers, boating companies and restaurants are among the growing number of small businesses reeling from the worst drought to hit the United States in 12 years.

Authorities have already declared more than 1,000 counties in 26 states as drought natural disaster areas.
