Every morning, we pile into our van and leave our hotel in Ichinoseki in north-central Japan and head due east to the coast to report on how the country is recovering from the twin disaster of March 11. A two-lane highway takes us over the Kitakami River and winds through small towns like Senmaya, Konashi, Yagoshi and Orikabe. Between these towns, rural homes sit amongst rice paddies below hillsides thick with forest. Although the drive is only 30 miles (48 kilometers) it usually takes us about an hour and forty-five minutes to cover the distance.
Like Mother's Day, Father's Day has a modern origin. The idea came to Mrs. John Dodd as she sat listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Her father, William Smart, had raised his children alone on his Washington farm after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Mrs. Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a "father's day" on June 5, her father's birthday. The idea received strong support, but the good ministers of Spokane asked that the day be changed to give them extra time to prepare sermons on the unexplored subject of fathers. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, and soon other towns had their own celebrations. In spite of widespread support, Father's Day did not become a permanent national holiday until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that it be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June.

The moon took on an eerie red hue Wednesday (June 15) during the longest total eclipse in 11 years, amazing skywatchers around the world, even in places where the cosmic event wasn't visible.
The total lunar eclipse, one of two that will occur this year, offered 100 minutes of totality as the moon passed into Earth's shadow, but the eclipse's actual progression took hours.
The moon first dipped into the fringe of Earth's shadow at about 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT) and left it behind at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT). Not since the 107-minute lunar eclipse of July 16, 2000 has the moon been in Earth's shadow so long. Only four total lunar eclipses, counting this one, have ever lasted 100 minutes or longer.

A car is trapped in water on Ferry Road after two magnitude 6.0 and 5.5 earthquakes struck on Monday in Christchurch, New Zealand.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand— A series of aftershocks rattled New Zealand's quake-devastated city of Christchurch again Monday, toppling one of the few buildings still standing downtown and sinking thousands of homes into darkness.
Bricks came crashing down in the cordoned-off city center, where only workers have tread since it was devastated in February's major earthquake. About 200 people were there when the quakes struck Monday, and two were briefly trapped in a church. In all, 10 people were injured in the city.
"We are being enveloped with dust," Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker told NewZealand's National Radio. "It is very, very scary."

Here's your first peek at the Dave Niehaus Statue;
Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs gets his first look at the statue of Dave Niehaus that is being constructed at the Rotblatt Amrany studio outside Chicago. (Photo by Greg Johns/MLB.com)
While we’re in Chicago for the White Sox series, a group from the Mariners headed to nearby Highwood, Ill., on Monday to meet with sculptor Lou Cella and see how his work was going on the Dave Niehaus statue that will be installed in Safeco Field late this season.
Turns out, Cella is well underway on the project , which is stunning. Rick Rizzs, Niehaus’ longtime broadcast partner, was blown away when he walked into the room where the sculpture is being worked on.
At this point, the statue has been done in clay. That mold will then be used to cast the bronze piece that ultimately will go into the outfield concourse in Safeco sometime in September.
I’ll have more details on all this later today on Mariners.com, but thought people would be interested in seeing how the sculpture looks at this point.
The piece has Niehaus sitting at a broadcast desk with his scorebook opened to the game of Oct. 8, 1995. You might recall that as “The Double” game by Edgar Martinez. Cella used Niehaus’ actual scorebook and the engraving is a clear reproduction of his actual notes and scoring from that memorable day.
The detail on the piece is stunning, right down to one of Niehaus’ favorite “baseball” ties. Fans will be able to sit next to Niehaus on the bench on the sculpture, as the Mariners want it to be an interactive piece given Niehaus’ open relationship with fans around the Pacific Northwest.

'It typically doesn't get this hot this quickly,' National Weather Service expert says
WASHINGTON — Unseasonably high temperatures moved into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Wednesday, triggering heat and air quality warnings.
The National Weather Service is predicting a brief but intense heat wave with temperatures nearing 100 degrees for the East and mid-Atlantic. Forecasters said it will feel even hotter with high humidity and a ridge of high pressure parked over the East Coast and Southeast states through Thursday.
"We're forecasting the high to be pretty close to the record" of 98 degrees set for Washington in 1999, said Brandon Peloquin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The normal high temperature this time of year in the nation's capital is about 82 degrees.
"As you can see that's quite a bit higher than normal this time of year," Peloquin said. "I'm not sure it really says much about what the summer is going to be like."

Israel fires tear gas, warning shots at protest in Golan Heights
MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights (AP) — Syrian police are preventing pro-Palestinian marchers from approaching the border with the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, a day after deadly clashes with Israeli troops there.
Police have set up a pair of checkpoints near the border area. One is about two miles (five kilometers) away, and the second is just half a mile (one kilometer) away.
Security forces have been telling people not to cross and sending them away.
Heights, on Sunday.MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights — Israeli security forces opened fire across the Syrian frontier on Sunday to disperse hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters who stormed a border fence on the Golan Heights on the anniversary of the Arab defeat in the 1967 Mideast war. Arab media said three people were killed.
An Israeli military spokesman in Tel Aviv said soldiers, who had been on high alert along the Syrian and Lebanese frontiers in anticipation of possible border-breaching protests, fired warning shots. He gave no casualty figures. A Reuters correspondent at the scene saw at least four demonstrators carried away on stretchers by the crowd, but it was not immediately clear if they had been hit by Israeli gunfire. Israel had promised to prevent a repeat of a deadly protest last month, in which hundreds of people burst across the frontier and stormed into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.
"Unfortunately, extremist forces around us are trying today to breach our borders and threaten our communities and our citizens. We will not let them do that," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet.
"I have instructed our security forces to act with resolve, with maximum restraint but with resolve in order to safeguard our sovereignty, our borders, our communities and our citizens."

122 million miles later, Endeavour makes last touchdown Spacecraft heads for retirement after landing; Atlantis rolls to launch pad.
Wednesday, June 1, 2011: Space shuttle Endeavour made its final landing at Kennedy Space Center, Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Endeavour spent 16 days in space on the STS-134 mission outfitting the International Space Station. During 25 flights, Endeavour spent 299 days in space, and traveled more than 122.8 million miles. It first launched on May 7, 1992
Kennedy Space Center, Florida (CNN) -- The space shuttle Endeavour landed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida early Wednesday, completing its 25th and final mission -- the next-to-last mission for NASA's 30-year-old space shuttle program.
"Welcome home, Endeavour," Mission Control in Houston said.
The spacecraft touched down at 2:34 a.m. ET at the end of a nearly 16-day mission to the International Space station.
"It's sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy," said Cmdr. Mark Kelly after Endeavour rolled to a stop in the darkness of a warm Florida morning
Endeavour unlocked from the International Space Station late Sunday after spending more than 11 days linked to the orbiting laboratory, where the astronauts installed a cosmic ray detector. The $2 billion, 15,000-pound machine is already at work "gathering information that could improve our understanding of the universe," Kelly said.
"The retirement of Endeavour and the shuttle fleet will not end the human need to explore," Kelly said in comments from space that were posted on NASA's website. "It is and always will be part of who we are. The United States will build other spaceships better than those of today. Glad my Buddy John's Ok,.....Upended and concussed during the playoffs, the Seahawks tight end is symptom-free and training with Matt Hasselbeck.
When last seen on a football field, Seahawks tight end John Carlson was knocked unconscious by a nasty headfirst fall during a divisional playoff loss at Chicago.
“It’s not the way I wanted my season to end, obviously,” said Carlson, a former Litchfield High School standout. “But the good news is I recovered quickly. After a day or two, I didn’t have any headache or any real symptoms of my concussion. The doctors cleared me to start working out about a week later. I feel really fortunate about that.”
Carlson is living in Seattle. One of his regular training partners is free agent Matt Hasselbeck, the longtime Seahawks quarterback whose future in Seattle is uncertain.
“The lockout has been unfortunate for us because of Matt’s situation and the fact we also have a new offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, who came over from the Vikes,” Carlson said. “I really hope Matt comes back because he knows the Darrell Bevell West Coast system from all those years under Mike Holmgren.
“But the thing is I have absolutely no idea if Matt will be back or not. Like everything else, it’s just wait and see.”

Sir Isaac Newton, known as the father of modern physics and astronomy, said, "There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane [i.e., secular] history.
"Sir Winston Churchill, the great British prime minister, statesman, historian and author, said: "We reject with scorn all these learned and labored myths that Moses was but a legendary figure. We believe that the most scientific view, the most up-to-date and rationalistic conception, will find its fullest satisfaction in taking the Bible story literally."
Thomas Jefferson, third U.S. president, stated: "I have always said and always will say that the studious perusal of the Sacred Volume will make better citizens, better fathers, better husbands . . . The Bible makes the best people in the world."
Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. president, stated: "In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man."
Theodore Roosevelt, 26th U.S. president, said, "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education."
Ronald Reagan, 40th U.S. president, said, "Of the many influences that have shaped the United States into a distinctive nation and people, none may be said to be more fundamental and enduring than the Bible." "WOW"

Godfather of Northwest Rock?
Pat O'Day spinning discs at a local sock-hop, ca. 1958 Courtesy Pat O'Day
Pat O'Day -- founding father of Northwest rock ‘n’ roll or the “Godfather” of the 1960s teendance scene? A vampire or the catalyst? Or all of the above? There are many Northwesterners who would debate these points for days on end, but what is perfectly clear is that when it came to the business of rock music in the Northwest, Pat O’Day was the Chairman of the Board, the Grand Poobah, the Top Dog, the Big Kahuna. New York City had Alan Freed, Boston had Arnie Ginsberg, Los Angeles had Hunter Hancock, and Seattle had O’Day. As Seattle’s highest-profile DJ of the 1960s and the region’s dominant dance promoter, Pat O’Day ran Northwest rock ‘n’ roll for nearly a decade.~By Peter Biecha Read more > http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=3130
Jerry O'Day has been creating art since early childhood. Drawing and painting is a passion and by High s chool age, Jerry became an expert at metal fabrication and casting. While attending school at Washington State University, Jerry was an assistant to the professor in metalworking and won "Best of Sculpture" in the 1978 WSU Undergraduate Fine Art Exhibition.
Jerry's early influences were varied. Surrealist artists Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher figured important in O'Days developing style. Later, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Peter Max, George Rodrigue and Romero Britto became an obvious influence.
"I had the extraordinary fortune of studying under great artists and educators. While attending Washington State University, my painting skills were enhanced through the instruction of Gaylon Hansen and Rudy Fernandez. My sculpture and metalworking were heavily influenced by Jack Dolhausen, Boyd Wright, Bob Helm and Rudy Fernandez."
"My paintings need to make people smile and think. I love the way a piece of art can take an individual on a "little journey" into the viewers own experience. A truth about art interpretation is that the viewer's response is often "tinted" by he or she's own set of experiences. A single canvas exposed to ten people, will invoke ten different responses, which is what I love about art."
"If my artwork makes one smile, think, reflect and improve an environment- it has done its job. Welcome to my collection of paintings!"
Sculpture has always intrigued Jerry. "I like the 'permanence' of a piece of art cast in bronze." When it comes to art in three dimensions, Jerry finds himself leaning towards figurative work.
"I have found a nice home with Seattle's Pratt Art School. They have excellent instructors as well as a wonderful foundry to work out of."
