Seahawks’ Pete Carroll denies Geno Smith arm issue after brutal 49ers loss
The Seattle Seahawks looked lost as they got eaten alive by a tough San Francisco 49ers squad. Not only was Christian McCaffrey too much to handle for their secondary but Geno Smith could not make runs to get their offense within striking distance. It looked like a concern for most
fans, especially after what looked like a disasterclass of a first half. Murmurs of injuries started surfacing in the middle of the Thanksgiving game. All of these prompted Pete Carroll to clarify the status of his quarterback, via Brady Henderson of ESPN.
“That had nothing to do with it,” was the declaration that the Seahawks coach made after being asked about Geno Smith’s arm.
Fans were getting worried because of Smith’s performance against the 49ers. He only threw for 18 completions and had nine incomplete passes. The Seahawks quarterback uncharacteristically could not get a passing touchdown but notched a crucial interception. Overall, Pete Carroll’s
offense was not clicking due to their air attack. The 49ers led by Christian McCaffrey eclipsed them with 377 total yards while they only got 220 throughout the whole four quarters.
Moreover, their efficiency on first downs was also horrid because the Seahawks only had 14 of them. The 49ers got 23 first-down conversions which overwhelmed their secondary. Six sacks could knock the wind out of any quarterback and it looked like the case for Smith. But, the
brighter side of things is that he has a chance to redeem himself in the coming games. Another injury to him would deliver a significant blow to the Seahawks’ postseason hopes.
NFL Thanksgiving 2023: Seahawks predictably embarrassed 31-13 by 49ers
Two fierce NFC West rivals square off in the Thanksgiving night-capper in Seattle.
Well that wasn’t even close.
The Seattle Seahawks (6-5) fell behind early, sort of recovered for some semblance of respectability in the 3rd quarter, but ultimately got trounced 31-13 by the vastly superior San Francisco 49ers (8-3). Lumen Field had a lot of 49ers fans in the building, and they were the joyous ones
almost from the opening kick.
Geno Smith played through his arm injury but didn’t play remotely well. The offensive line was predictably outmatched, DK Metcalf had a bad case of the dropsies, Jaxon Smith-Njigba gave us one notable offensive highlights, and the only touchdown scored was a pick-6 by Jordyn Brooks.
Dee Eskridge at least shined on return duties, so there’s that.
The Seahawks are still in a playoff spot and that will remain the case regardless of the Week 12 results, but this is not a playoff team. They are playing like one of the ten worst in football and have zero consistency on either side of the ball. Maybe I should run that poll again asking if the
Seahawks will lose out.
Christian McCaffrey rushed for two scores, Deebo Samuel had his rushing TD, and Brandon Aiyuk had the TD catch that put the game out of reach.
1st Quarter
The 49ers got the ball first after Seattle deferred to the 2nd half. Christian McCaffrey immediately got involved with a 13-yard catch-and-run, beating both Jordyn Brooks and Bobby Wagner in coverage. McCaffrey dashed for 27 yards later on in the opening series and into the Seahawks’
red zone. Deebo Samuel caught a pass on Wagner and then easily scored on a 2-yard handoff to cap off a flawless opening drive.
A Dee Eskridge highlight! The embattled 2021 second-round pick took the ensuing kick return 66 yards. Your eyes aren’t deceiving you! This led to a Jason Myers field goal, as the Seahawks only gained 1 yard after this.
The 49ers offense just carved the Seahawks up with ease. Two big throws by Brock Purdy to a wide open Deebo Samuel had San Francisco in field goal range in next to no time at all. A holding penalty on Jauan Jennings nullified a big run by Christian McCaffrey, which derailed the drive.
Leonard Williams blew up a screen pass on 3rd and 14 and knocked them out of field goal range.
Seattle went three-and-out, highlighted by Geno Smith getting tripped by Zach Charbonnet almost for a safety. Thrilling stuff. The subsequent punt by Michael Dickson only went to the Seattle 45. Seattle could’ve gotten off the field on 3rd and 7 if any of Riq Woolen, Devon Witherspoon,
or Tre Brown could tackle Jauan Jennings. Instead, he gained 8 to move the sticks.
2nd Quarter
A 3rd down stop by the Seahawks was negated by Tre Brown very clearly holding George Kittle in the end zone. Christian McCaffrey scored from a yard out to extend the lead to 14-3.
Dee Eskridge gained 11 on a jet sweep, and then Geno got picked off on an out route intended for Tyler Lockett. Ambry Thomas was all over it and just like that, ball at the Seattle 41 for the 49ers.
The Seahawks defense stepped up and prevented the 49ers from getting any points, but a punt backed Seattle up at the 2. DK Metcalf looked to have a catch deep down the sideline on Charvarius Ward, except he drifted out of bounds and couldn’t get a second foot down. Punt time, yet again.
This time, the Seahawks defense wasn’t so stout. Brandon Aiyuk got open for a big gain into Seattle territory, Deebo and Kittle converted 3rd downs, and McCaffrey just slickly outran and evaded the Seahawks defense for his second touchdown.
After another Seahawks three-and-out, the 49ers went three-and-out in solidarity. Devon Witherspoon blew up a screen pass and that put them behind the sticks just before the two-minute warning.
DeeJay Dallas muffed a punt and the 49ers recovered. LOL, that’s all I’ve got. The 49ers kicked a field goal before the break.
Seattle got into a 1-minute drill, finally picked up a couple of first downs, and Jason Myers hooked a 53-yard field goal wide right. Fitting. Stone Forsythe picked up a stupid penalty for body slamming a dude.
3rd Quarter
Seattle got into field goal range in an uptempo, promising drive to start the half. Geno then got sacked by Nick Bosa, who just destroyed Stone Forsythe off the snap and got them out of FG range.
A COOL PLAY! Jordyn Brooks’ first career interception is a touchdown! Brock Purdy threw an errant pass, and Jordyn took it to the house. Another three-and-out got the crowd really rocking and produced some spark in terms of a possible comeback.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba. This was incredible! And it was after a DK Metcalf drop.
Suddenly the Seahawks were pushing the 49ers back on the ground, getting some success through the air, and they made their way into the red zone. Geno Smith had two runs for almost 20 yards to get 1st and goal at the 8. However, the drive stalled after Jaxon Smith-Njigba was held
on 2nd and goal but no flag was thrown, and then Geno was sacked on 3rd and goal with no one open. Jason Myers did hit from 30 to cut into the deficit some more.
4th Quarter
The 49ers crossed into Seahawks territory off the back of Deebo and McCaffrey. A big hit by Quandre Diggs stopped McCaffrey short of the marker on 3rd and long. Faced with 4th and 3, the 49ers false started and ended up punting to begin the 4th. Suffice to say, the Seahawks wasted this.
Brock Purdy had an inconsistent night, but he threw a dime to Brandon Aiyuk for the dagger TD. A perfect throw that beat Devon Witherspoon and Julian Love in coverage to make it an 18-point game.
Seattle again had a promising drive, but it was semi-garbage time at this point and they failed on a 3rd and 1 sneak, followed by a 4th and 1 shotgun run to Charbonnet who was denied. Ball game.

NFL's John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration sees tributes throughout tripleheader
John Madden believed Thanksgiving is about family, football, food, tradition and fun.
And the turducken, of course.
The NFL will celebrate his legacy for a second annual John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration during its tripleheader on Thursday.
Madden, the legendary NFL coach turned broadcaster and video game pioneer, called 20 Thanksgiving games during his career, where his turducken (a deboned turkey, stuffed with a deboned duck, stuffed with a chicken) became a holiday delicacy.
The Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers at 12:30 p.m. ET on FOX. The Dallas Cowboys host the Washington Commanders at 4:30 p.m. ET on CBS. And the San Francisco 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
The NFL will honor Madden throughout Thanksgiving Day with:
∎Tributes to Madden for his contributions to the sport in each game, in the broadcast booth and on the field.
∎A “Madden Hallmark" will kick off each broadcast, conveying what Thanksgiving meant to Madden in his own words.

Lock threw a deep shot on 3rd and 11 and got picked off by Derion Kendrick on a pass intended for Tyler Lockett. A celebration penalty moved the Rams back 15 yards, but Stafford hit Nacua for a 32-yard gain anyway. Seattle had a 3rd and 15 stop, if only for a hands to the face penalty
on Riq Woolen to extend the drive. The run defense got gashed by Royce Freeman and suddenly LA was in field goal range. Freeman converted a 3rd and 2 by running over Bobby Wagner for a huge conversion. A Nacua just sweep put the Rams in goal-to-go, which led to Seattle burning
timeouts. Surprisingly, the Rams threw the ball and Stafford threw an incomplete pass. Another throw was caught but short of the end zone, so the chip shot field goal by Lucas Havrisik was good but with 1:31 left.
Geno Smith returned to the lineup. A throw to Lockett to his own 40 but the clock was running. Checkdown to Charbonnet for minimal gain. They reviewed this, which would’ve benefited Seattle just to stop the clock. The ruling upheld with :42 left. GENO TO DK TO THE RAMS’ 39! A run
with Charbonnet with :19 and a spike with :07 left. Jason Myers from 55 for the win. Timeout, Rams. The kick is no good. Seahawks lose.

Diamondbacks’ Paul Sewald saved career with ‘180’ transformation after Mets stint
Since he left Queens, though, Sewald has resurrected his career by changing where he throws his low-90s fastball, refining the shape of his slider and then pitching with the confidence that was difficult to establish as a Met.
“Man, doing a 180, I’ve changed everything about myself from when I was in New York,” Sewald said Thursday on the eve of the World Series against the Rangers at Globe Life Field. “It’s worked out a lot better than it did in New York. I obviously wish I had pitched better there, but I got
some advice that really turned my career around and just changing everything about my pitch shapes has probably been the key to being who I am.
“Obviously I lacked confidence there because I wasn’t pitching well — it’s like the chicken or the egg. You can’t pitch well without confidence but you can’t have confidence until you pitch well. I just finally started pitching well and obviously feel a lot better about who I am as a pitcher.”
Paul Sewald has become a key part of the Diamondbacks’ bullpen for their World Series run.USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con
It didn’t raise many eyebrows when the Mets non-tendered Sewald in December 2020 after he pitched to a 5.50 ERA in 125 games across parts of four seasons.
But his turnaround began shortly after he signed with the Mariners that offseason.
They wanted him to throw his fastball up in the zone instead of down and away while also tweaking his slider into more of a sweeper and ditching his changeup.
Paul Sewald was non-tendered by the Mets in December 2020.Getty Images
Sewald said he struggled with the adjustment in spring training of 2021 but kept working on it while at the club’s alternate site that April.
After a few months it clicked, and in 189 ¹/₃ innings since he has posted a 2.95 ERA.
The 33-year-old isn’t throwing much harder than he did as a Met — his fastball averaged 92.2 mph this season — but elevating the pitch has made all the difference because of the lower slot from which he throws it.
“He used to kill us when he was in Seattle and I was in Houston,” Diamondbacks pitching coach Brent Strom said. “Guys would come back to the bench and say, ‘S–t, I can’t hit it. It’s on me.’ I’d look and say, ‘It’s only 91.’ That’s when you realize.”
In eight games this postseason, Sewald — who was traded from the Mariners to the Diamondbacks at the deadline — has yet to allow a run, recording six saves with 11 strikeouts across eight innings.
Mariners’ Paul Sewald enjoys silencing Mets fans in ‘emotional’ Citi Field return
Jeremy Hefner played with Sewald in 2014 at High-A St. Lucie when Hefner was rehabbing his first Tommy John surgery before becoming Sewald’s pitching coach for the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
Hefner noted “there was an opportunity” for Sewald to throw his fastball up in the zone, but did not made it a point of emphasis. Three years later, of course, hindsight is 20-20.
“I think looking back, I wish I would have obviously — revisionist history here, but I wish I would have been a little more direct,” Hefner said by phone Thursday. “I’ve definitely noticed it. But it was one of those things where it just never got to the point where we were saying that explicitly.”
As for why the fastball plays up so much when Sewald elevates it?
“He’s a big guy and he throws from a unique release height,” Hefner said. “So the hitters are expecting the ball to come down and it doesn’t. He can get his hand in position to continue to ride the ball from that lower slot, which is pretty difficult to do.”
Sewald said he believes he and Hefner would have been able to figure things out had they gotten more time together.
Paul Sewald, pictured after the Diamondbacks swept the Dodgers in the NLDS, was acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline.AP
Instead, the Mets did not tender Sewald a contract after the 2020 season, which indirectly allowed his career to take off.
“Just super happy for him,” Hefner said. “The work ethic was never in question. He was never a guy that slacked, so you knew if he could just figure out that last piece, he could turn into something special.”
"We've got Sunday night next week against a really good Bengals team," Allen said. "That's going to be all our focus. Get away for a couple days, refresh, come back and be ready to go."

Mariners star Julio Rodriguez notches incredible HR, SB career feat not seen since Eric Davis
Story by Gerard Angelo Samillano
Julio Rodriguez is back. After having a slow start to his sophomore season, the Seattle Mariners star is back to doing what he does best: hit bombs and steal bases. Julio is at the forefront of Seattle’s charge towards the playoffs in the 2023 season. His latest exploits saw him finally hit 60 home runs and 60 stolen
bases in his career.
You might think that that’s awfully quick of him to do at just the tail-end of his second season. Indeed, that is an abnormally quick pace to reach 60 SBs and 60 HRs. In fact, Julio Rodriguez is the second-fastest player to reach that milestone in his career, with the Mariners star taking only 284 games to do so. The
fastest player to that feat? Former Reds star Eric Davis, per ESPN Stats and Info.
“With his HR last night, Julio Rodríguez reached 60 career HR and 60 stolen bases in 284 games, the 2nd-fewest in MLB history. The only player to get there in fewer games was Eric Davis (276).”
Rodriguez’s 60th home run couldn’t have come at a better time for the Mariners. They’ve fallen behind in the uber-competitive race for a playoff spot in the American League. A clutch win over the Rangers keeps Seattle’s playoff hopes alive, whether it’s through the Wild Card round or as a division winner.
The Mariners now need to claw back against the Rangers in the final three games of their series. A sweep here would give them the best odds of making it to the postseason. They’ve already taken one from Texas. Can they get three more wins?

MLB looking into Astros’ Hector Neris allegedly using homophobic slur in Julio Rodriguez shouting match
Story by Poch de la Rosa
Major League Baseball is investigating a shouting match between Houston Astros reliever Hector Neris and Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez. A bench-clearing incident involving Neris and Rodriguez ensued in the Astros’ 8-3 win on Wednesday. Hector Neris allegedly used a homophobic slur when he
confronted Julio Rodriguez.
Neris denied the allegations, per The Athletic’s Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal.
“That did not happen and any suggestion to the contrary is wrong. My mother raised me to love and respect people for who they are and that is how I live my life,” Neris said.
For his part, Julio Rodriguez didn’t delve into specifics.
“I’m going to keep the comments (private). But I feel like you’ve always got to give respect. He’s someone I had a lot of respect for. I’ve known him for a long time, dating back to 2020, during the pandemic. I just feel like I deserved a little more respect,” Rodriguez said.
Hector Neris confronted Julio Rodriguez after the former struck out the Mariners’ All-Star outfielder in the sixth inning. Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez was in the on-deck circle when the confrontation took place. Suarez said he heard Neris utter a slur at Rodriguez.
Hector Neris insisted he acted on impulse in the heat of the battle between the two AL West protagonists.
“It’s part of the game, emotional, like this situation today. But it’s nothing personal. It’s only trying to (wake) up my team,” Hector Neris said.
This isn’t the first time Hector Neris riled up the Mariners. MLB suspended Neris and Astros manager Dusty Baker after the former hit Mariners infielder Ty France with a wayward pitch last year.
Expect more fireworks between the Astros and Mariners should they square off in the postseason.

“Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game” - Alton Lister thinks that Shawn Kemp’s famous poster dunk on him was a form of revenge
By OREL DIZON
Is there any list of the most disrespectful poster dunks in NBA history that doesn't have Shawn Kemp's slam over Alton Lister? The iconic dunk remains etched in the memories of those who got to watch the league in the early 1990s.
It wasn't enough for the former Seattle SuperSonics star to jump through Lister, but the fact that Kemp pointed at his downed rival made the play more unforgettable. Much has been said about the dunk, and Lister also said his piece about it in an interview with ESPN a couple of years ago.
"During my era, I did not back down as a rim protector," Lister said. "I was challenged by a lot of players, and sometimes I was successful and other times, not. But Game 4 was a whole different story. Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game, and that's what he did. It was personal for him. That's why he
pointed at me after the dunk."
Revenge from the "Reign Man"
The dunk came during Game 4 of the first-round matchup between the Sonics and the third-seeded Golden State Warriors. Things had been testy between the two sides, with Kemp and Lister already having gone at it in the second game of the series.

Hector Neris downplays Julio Rodriguez incident after benches clear in Astros-Mariners
Story by Sam DiGiovanni
The Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners are in the thick of a super tight playoff race as the 2023 season comes down to the wire. The tensions got really hot in their latest game as the benches emptied following a kerfuffle between Hector Neris and Julio Rodriguez.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Neris struck out Rodriguez on three pitches and got fired up, shouting at the Mariners star and igniting a heated confrontation that caused dugouts and bullpens to empty. Rodriguez was visibly frustrated at Neris, who walked right away and didn’t turn around to look at Rodriguez until
later.
BENCHES CLEAR in Seattle after Hector Neris strikes out Julio Rodriguez then taunts him
Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez was on the on-deck circle as Neris chirped Rodriguez. He told Adam Jude of the Seattle Times that Neris shouted a homophobic slur in Spanish at Rodriguez. Although there has been some dispute about what the specific word Neris used, it’s clear based on Rodriguez’s body
language that Neris was out of line.
After the game, which the Astros won by a score of 8-3, Neris said that there was nothing personal between him and Rodriguez, according to Shane Lantz of the Associated Press.
“It’s part of the game, emotional, like this situation today,” Neris said, via AP. “But it’s nothing personal. It’s only trying to (wake) up my team.”
Rodriguez was unavailable for questions after the game. According to Lantz, a Mariners spokesperson said that Rodriguez was shocked at Neris’ behavior but said that he doesn’t believe he had any prior issues with the Astros pitcher.
The Astros won the series against the Mariners as both teams head into their final series of the regular season. Buckle up for what will be a crazy ride to the finish line.
The Astros, Mariners and Texas Rangers are fighting down to the wire for the AL West title. Texas owns the top spot and leads Houston by 2.5 games and Seattle is 1.5 games back of the Astros. The Mariners will host the Rangers for a four-game series to end the regular season while the Astros close it out with a
road matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are fighting for their own playoff lives in the NL Wild Card race.

Israel uncovers ancient Christian inscription from Book of Psalms
Story by By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH
An excavation project at the remote site of Hyrcania in the Judean Desert that has unearthed a rare Byzantine Greek inscription paraphrasing a verse from the Book of Psalms is being carried out by archaeologists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU). It is being performed to save remaining archaeological finds
from antiquities looters who have been more active in recent years.
Hyrcania was an ancient fortress built by Hasmonean ruler John Hyrcanus or his son Alexander Jannaeus in the 2nd or 1st century BCE.
The readable text is a paraphrase of Psalms 86: 1–2, known as “a prayer of David.” While the original lines are “Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am faithful to you,” the Hyrcania version reads: "Jesus Christ, guard me, for I am poor and needy.”
Built upon an imposing, artificially leveled hilltop situated about 17 kilometers southeast of Jerusalem and eight km southwest of Qumran and the Dead Sea, this was one of a series of desert fortresses that was later rebuilt and enlarged by Herod the Great. The most famous, and luxurious, of these strongholds are
Masada and Herodium.
The inscription is in Koine Greek – biblical Greek or New Testament Greek that was the common supra-regional form of Greek spoken and written during the Hellenistic period, the Roman Empire, and the early Byzantine Empire that served as the lingua franca of much of the Mediterranean region and the Middle East
during the following centuries.

Adorned with a cross, the Byzantine-era inscription was likely made by a knowledgeable monk and holds significance as a well-known prayer in the Masoretic text and Christian liturgy. An analysis of the script’s style suggests a dating no later than the first half of the 6th century CE, which was the height of the
Byzantine era and with minor grammatical errors, revealing the scribe’s mother tongue to be Semitic.

Previously unknown language found hidden in "cultic ritual text" of ancient tablets
The university said that these ritual texts were usually written by the scribes of Hittite rulers and reflect various Bronze Age traditions and languages. According to the University of Chicago's Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, which keeps the Chicago Hittite Dictionary, a "comprehensive, bilingual Hittite-
English dictionary," studying Hittite languages can help illuminate how Western civilization began.
"Despite what is often thought, modern Western civilization did not start with the Greeks," the institute said on its website. "The real cradle of our civilization stood in what is now the Middle East. Many literary and artistic themes and motifs can be traced back directly to that world. The Bible was embedded in ancient
Near Eastern society, and the earliest forms of what we call modern science are found in Babylon. Anatolia is the natural bridge between those Eastern worlds and Graeco-Roman civilization and the Hittites and their later descendants in the same area served as intermediaries, handing down ancient Near Eastern
culture to the West."
Aaron Rodgers sends brutal message to Joe Namath
The New York Jets are spiraling, Zach Wilson hasn’t played well, and Aaron Rodgers doesn’t think Joe Namath is helping. Things for the Jets haven’t gone well at all since Week 1. While the team celebrated a victory over the Buffalo Bills that night, Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury had an adverse effect. Wilson has not
played well again under center, leading to two straight losses for New York. The New England Patriots defeated the Jets over the weekend, and Wilson’s performance was less than stellar.
Namath, a Jet legend and the quarterback for the team’s lone Super Bowl win destroyed Wilson in a rant. Rodgers appeared on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ Tuesday, making a scheduled appearance, and responded to Namath’s words. Suffice it to say, the former multi-time NFL MVP wasn’t happy.
“I said it to them in the preseason: our toughest task is handling success,” Rodgers said. “And that’s whether we’re having success or not having success. It doesn’t mean you’re winning all the time; you gotta handle it the right way. It’s when we’re not having success; how do we respond? How do we respond to
adversity?”
“And that goes for our fanbase and former players as well. You’re not helping the cause,” Rodgers said.
Granted, while Rodgers isn’t necessarily wrong, the Jets are in a helpless situation. No matter how many positive outlooks the team might have, the quarterback position is clearly restricting them. And that figures to continue as long as Rodgers is sidelined with his Achilles injury.

The Seahawks are above .500 for the first time this season, and they did it behind a big 2nd half.
Carolina Panthers VS Seattle Seahawks Watchalong Stream
The Seattle Seahawks (2-1) made sure the special day for the 2013 championship team wouldn’t be spoiled. It was a slow start for Seattle, who trailed 13-9 at one point against the Carolina Panthers (0-3), but Geno Smith and company were able to move the ball at will in the 2nd half and turn those early field goals
into touchdowns. The Seahawks outscored Carolina 25-14 after intermission, going up by as much as 17 points before allowing a garbage-time TD in the team’s 37-27 victory.
Smith threw for just shy of 300 yards and had a touchdown pass to rookie sensation Jake Bobo. Kenneth Walker had well over 100 yards of offense and a couple of touchdowns, and DK Metcalf battled through injury and had over 100 receiving yards. The Seahawks defense gave up some big plays to Andy Dalton, who
threw for 361 yards on a comical 58 attempts, but Carolina was one-dimensional and couldn’t run the ball at all. Seattle’s pass coverage had some strong moments in between the uglier ones, and the pass rush was relentless getting at Dalton.
The crowd was also awesome, forcing the Panthers into a whopping eight false starts. It was reminiscent of the 2005 win over the New York Giants, who jumped 11 times.
The only bad news? A lot of injuries. A lot. Of. Injuries.
1st Quarter
The Seahawks got the ball first for the third straight week, but unlike the last two weeks they failed to get points. Two pressures on three plays led to a punt. Andy Dalton got crunched on a 3rd down completion to Adam Thielen, and that hit by Julian Love resulted in a roughing penalty. Carolina got into the red zone
only for Boye Mafe to knock them backwards with an 11-yard sack. Then a hold on Tommy Tremble led to 3rd and 26. Adam Thielen caught a quick screen and Eddy Pineiro booted one through the uprights to put Carolina on the board.
Seattle benefited from an iffy face mask call on Justin Houston, which gave them a free 15 on a Ken Walker run. A big pass to DK Metcalf set them up in Carolina territory, but a 3rd and 1 direct snap to Walker was snuffed. On 4th and 1 at Carolina’s 29, Pete Carroll went for it and Walker just about got it. Iffy spot,
really bizarre measurement! Seattle would have to settle for a field goal, which Jason Myers converted from 43.
Carolina had another drive destroyed by a sack, this time courtesy of Jarran Reed and friends on a blitz.
2nd Quarter
Seattle got the ball back and it only took a few plays to get into Carolina’s red zone, with Geno hitting DK Metcalf deep down the field on a beautiful throw. Evan Brown wiped out a Zach Charbonnet run to the 3 by committing a holding penalty. A sack by Brian Burns backed them up, so Myers had to kick another field
goal to give the Seahawks the lead.
Andy Dalton got the ball back and the Panthers went three-and-out swiftly. The Seahawks started at their own 39 and it became the Ken Walker show. Two runs and two very successful plays, including a 36-yard scamper off a sick cut to the outside. Unfortunately the drive stalled out again and Seattle settled for 3
again.
The Panthers finally sustained a drive into Seattle territory, off the back of a nifty 15-yard run by Miles Sanders. On 3rd and 10 from the 47, Dalton found a wide open DJ Chark on a busted coverage for a 47-yard touchdown.
Geno nearly threw a pick on 1st down, got sacked on 2nd down, then actually picked on 3rd down. He was looking for Jaxon Smith-Njigba and found the linebacker Deion Jones instead, setting up Carolina at the 28. Carolina false started and were behind the sticks from the start, and the Seahawks defense held firm.
Eddy Pineiro made another field goal.
Geno responded with a 20-yard throw to Metcalf, and then a 22-yard catch-and-run by DK to put the Seahawks in the red zone. Three straight incomplete passes ensued, resulting in another field goal attempt for Myers to close the gap to 1.
The toes though! Playing like a vet! #Seahawks #MoreBobo
3rd Quarter
The Panthers went three-and-out to start the half, so a good start for the defense. Again the Seahawks were able to move the ball effectively down the field, but pressure from Justin Houston forced a 3rd and 4 incomplete pass by Geno. Jason Myers put one through from 39 to give Seattle the lead.
DJ Chark made a ridiculous catch along the sidelines for 28 yards on Mike Jackson, which was doubly bad because Pete Carroll threw the challenge flag and lost. The Panthers were in field goal range but Pineiro missed wide right from 55.
The Seahawks were backed up after a blindside block penalty on DK Metcalf, who went too far on a Ken Walker run. No problem because on 1st and 21, Geno found Walker wide open for 36 yards deep into Carolina territory. Noah Fant was open in the middle of the field to set up the first goal-to-go for either team in
the game. Two Walker runs got the Seahawks to the 1. The third one scored the Seahawks’ first TD.
Devon Witherspoon thought he had a 3rd down stop but was flagged for a very debatable pass interference. The next 3rd down was heaved down the field for Adam Thielen, who beat Artie Burns for a big conversion. Thielen was open on a shallow crosser and got to the 1-yard line to end the quarter.
4th Quarter
Miles Sanders scored his first touchdown as a Panther to open the 4th, cutting the lead back down to 2.
Two throws to tight ends yielded first down plays by Colby Parkinson and Noah Fant. The Fant catch put the Seahawks in Carolina territory once again. Then it was the Zach Charbonnet show on three consecutive carries, including an extra few yards because of a stupid body slam penalty by Deion Jones. Ken Walker
came in and finished things off with a 7-yard score.
Carolina really was in must-score territory and things were going well up until a comical sequence of back-to-back false starts put them at 3rd and 14. Then after Dalton threw incomplete, Frank Reich opted to punt and then the Panthers false started for an EIGHTH time in the game.
After a Seahawks three-and-out, Carolina had one more chance and did pretty much nothing with it. Dalton had a 4th and 2 conversion to Miles Sanders negated by an illegal shift, and then Jarran Reed sacked Dalton to force the turnover on downs.
The Seahawks went into bully ball mode and Zach Charbonnet made this poor Panthers defender almost slide into the locker room. Then it was Jake Bobo time for his first NFL touchdown! He tapped the toes, and got his first score. Then Geno and Lockett did this ridiculousness.
Dalton got a garbage-time drive going and Adam Thielen scored a deserved TD for his efforts.
‘In this house we worship Bobo’ - Seahawks fans react to 37-27 win
The Seattle Seahawks had themselves a day. After an overtime thriller against the Detroit Lions, they came out a bit sluggish against an injury-plagued and overmatched Carolina Panthers squad starting Andy Dalton at quarterback. Well, if you are a Seahawks fan (which I am assuming you probably are), you are
aware that this team has struggled to beat Mr. Dalton in the past. Heading into today’s game, they were 1-3 against the former TCU Horned Frogs star. Well, now you can update that record to 2-3.
The Seahawks were suffering from a plethora of injuries, as well, and for much of the first half, this looked like it was turning into another half-hearted snoozer of a performance at home. Fortunately, Jason Myers shook off his early season rust and made five straight field goals to give the team a 15-13 lead early in
the third quarter; a lead they would continue to pile on for the rest of the game. He wasn’t the only sharp player in this win, as the team saw a pair of their highly drafted rookies — Devon Witherspoon and Zach Charbonnet — make an impression on the field... and on opposing players. Even Jake Bobo got in on the
action! And I guess you could say this got some people talking...

Seahawks WR DK Metcalf explains what he believes separates good and great players in the NFL
Story by Tim Crean
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is a good — maybe even great — NFL wide receiver. He is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, looks like a Greek god, and runs as fast as Olympic sprinters. Still, despite all his physical gifts, ahead of the Seahawks Week 3 game against the Carolina Panthers, Metcalf says success in the
NFL is more about brains than brawn.
“I believe [preparation] is what separates a lot of the good players from the great players,” DK Metcalf said on the KG Certified show with NBA Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett. “How much knowledge they retain from the week.”
Metcalf went on to tell KG that he started watching a ton of film with a wide receivers coach a few years ago, and studying how cornerbacks and safeties like to play, how they cover and tackle, and what their tendencies are.
The Seahawks wideout also studies the greats. Metcalf listed his favorite former NFL WRs to watch on tape as Calvin Johnson, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, and Julio Jones. The Mississippi native also said that “Megatron” was his favorite player growing up.
This season, Metcalf’s tape study and knowledge retention are starting to pay off. He only had three catches in Week 1 for 47 yards, but he did catch a touchdown. In Week 2, he grabbed all six of his targets from Geno Smith and put up 75 rushing yards.
Ahead of the Seahawks Week 3 tilt with the Panthers, DK Metcalf studied corners CJ Henderson and Donte Jackson as well as safeties Xavier Woods and Vonn Bell. One top CB he will not face is Jaycee Horn, who is on injured reserve.
Seahawks Injury Report
LG Damien Lewis went to the locker room in the 2nd quarter with a hand injury. He returned later in the game.
CB Tre Brown went to the medical tent in the 2nd quarter with a possible head injury. He was ruled out with a concussion.
EDGE Darrell Taylor limped off the field in the 2nd quarter with a leg injury and did not return.
G Anthony Bradford had an ankle injury on Kenneth Walker’s 3rd quarter touchdown run. He returned in the 4th quarter.
DE Dre’Mont Jones left the game in the 2nd half with a hip injury and did not return.
