THE BROUGHT OUT THE KRAKEN

Roustan Media Ltd.

Seattle Kraken fans: On Your Mark... Get Set... Obsess!

After every Kraken game from now until they either make - or are eliminated from - the NHL playoffs, we'll provide these updated charts.

The top three teams in each NHL division qualify for the playoffs. Of all the remaining teams in each conference, the top two also earn playoff berths. These teams are known as "Wild Card 1" and "Wild Card 2."

For now, we'll focus on the Western Conference Wild Card 2 race, as that appears the most likely way for Seattle to squeeze into the post-season.

The first chart will provide an easy comparison between the Kraken, the team currently occupying "WC 2," and the teams closest to the Kraken "in the hunt."

"Regulation Wins" matters (as opposed to overtime or shootout wins), because if teams end up with the same number of points, regulation wins is the first tie-breaker.

"Games Remaining" show how many points a team can still potentially earn (2x number of games). A related term is "games in hand." If Team A has 20 games remaining and Team B has 18 games left, Team A has "two games in hand."

"Last 10 Results" is useful as an indicator of how contending teams are trending."Strength of Schedule" refers to the combined winning percentage of a team's remaining opponents. In this category, a lower number is better - but no guarantee.

"We watched Yellowstone together last year. We’ll set up a time at night and watch together and then go to bed. It’s like a married couple, basically.

"I’ve been trying to explore more. We love going out to different restaurants and trying them out. We had a little whiteboard at our house last year where we rate different restaurants."

PHILADELPHIA -- — Sean Couturier scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.

Scott Laughton and Ryan Poehling also scored for the Flyers, who have won all three of their games since the All-Star break. Philadelphia entered the break on a five-game losing streak.

Tomas Tatar and Jared McCann scored for the Kraken, who were playing their first game since Jan. 30 due to a combination of the All-Star break and the club’s bye week. Seattle lost six of eight entering the break. The Flyers held the Kraken to just two shots in the third period and 19 for

the contest.

“I just like how we kept on building in our game,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said.

Cal Petersen, making just his third start of the season, stopped 17 shots for the Flyers. Petersen assumed the backup role to Sam Ersson after Carter Hart took an indefinite leave of absence on Jan. 23. Hart is one of five players from Canada’s 2018 world junior team who have been

charged with sexual assault in Ontario.

Couturier broke a 2-all tie with 14:30 remaining when he deflected Travis Sanheim’s shot from the point past Kraken goalie Joey Daccord, who finished with 35 saves.

“Just a simple play,” Couturier said. “Get pucks to the net. I got the bounce there. Good, big goal.”

UPDATE: The Goal has been credited to Matty Beniers

McCann tied it 36 seconds into the final period when his shot from close range fluttered off Couturier’s stick and past Petersen’s glove.

“There were more plays to be had, especially in the first half of the hockey game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “Little bit off in execution.”

Laughton, elevated to the power play on Saturday morning, gave Philadelphia to a 1-0 lead with a one-timed slap shot 4:36 into the contest. It was a rare power-play goal for the Flyers, who entered second-from-last in the NHL by converting on just 13% of their chances. The goal

snapped a string of 11 straight opportunities on the man-advantage without a goal.

“Huge goal for us,” Tortorella said.

Seattle evened the score with 2:51 left in the period when Tatar fired a wrist shot from the slot past Petersen’s blocker side. Tortorella challenged the goal for a potential offsides by the Kraken, but the officials upheld the goal after a video review.

The Flyers answered when Poehling scored Philadelphia’s 12th short-handed goal of the season for a 2-1 lead with 1:46 left in the period. Philadelphia entered tied with Dallas for most short-handed goals in the league. Poehling’s wrist shot from a sharp angle slid under Daccord’s pads.

“That’s a huge point in the hockey game,” Hakstol said. “That one is on us.”

Seattle played without defenseman Justin Schultz, who was absent due to personal reasons, according to Hakstol.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- — Marc-Edouard Vlasic broke a scoreless tie with 12:33 remaining and Mackenzie Blackwood made 32 saves as the San Jose Sharks beat the Seattle Kraken 2-0 on Tuesday night.

“It feels good to win,” Vlasic said. “Wasn’t a perfect game, but we found a way to win. ... Playing a team that is fighting for the playoffs right now, it feels good.”

Marc-Edouard Vlasic breaks through for Sharks in the 3rd

Jan Rutta added an empty-net goal for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games to move two points ahead of the idle Chicago Blackhawks at the bottom of the NHL standings.

Blackwood earned his first shutout since December 2021 with the New Jersey Devils. It was San Jose’s first shutout of the season.

“I think we have confidence now that we can close a game out, whereas at the start of the year we were gripping the sticks a little too tight and making panic plays,” Blackwood said. “But we seem calm and believe we can close a game out, and we did a really good job.”

The Kraken outshot the Sharks 32-22, including 13-3 in the first period, but fell to 6-3 all-time against San JoseJoey Daccord stopped 20 shots in the loss.

“I thought we played great, generated a lot of offense, carried most of the play,” Daccord said. “Their goalie played unreal. Sometimes a goalie of that caliber can do that. He stole a game for them tonight.”

Vlasic’s goal was his fourth of the season and second in two games. He beat Daccord high blocker side on a wrist shot from the left point.

Ty Emberson and William Eklund picked up assists.

Jan Rutta scores empty netter the entire length of the ice

Rutta extended his point streak to five games, scoring his third goal of the season with 21 seconds left.

"I thought we got better as the game went on,” Sharks coach David Quinn said. “You’re hanging around at 0-0 and I thought we had our best period of the game in the third. Obviously, Blackie made some big saves for us, kept us in it. Like I said, I thought we elevated our game in the

third period.”

The Kraken have lost six of eight following a nine-game winning streak. They trail the Los Angeles KingsSt. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators by two points for a wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

“We didn’t (look past the Sharks),” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “They played their tails off on the other side tonight. They defended hard. Their goaltender made good saves and they got the first break offensively. Our guys worked hard tonight.”

San Jose leading scorer Tomas Hertl missed the game due to a lower-body injury.

SEATTLE -- — Jordan Eberle had two goals and an assist in Seattle's three-goal first period, and the Kraken beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 on Sunday night.

Jared McCann had a goal and an assist, Brandon Tanev also scored, and Oliver Bjorkstrand had two assists as Seattle extended its point streak to three games (2-0-1). Joey Daccord stopped 30 shots.

“We were disappointed to lose the point the other night,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said of Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to St. Louis when the Blues rallied from a 3-1 deficit. “But we came back and got the two points tonight that were critical.

"We have one game left before a long break, so we have to get our heads completely focused on that job, make sure we’re ready to go for a real competitive 60 minutes.”

McCann made it 2-0 with just under 4 minutes remaining in the period, breaking up the left side for a pass from Eberle and a shot from the middle of the left circle.

Eberle needed just 14 seconds of the Kraken’s second power-play opportunity to make it 3-0. McCann took a hard shot from the left circle, which Tarasov saved, but was unable to grab onto. With the puck loose in the crease, Eberle came in from Tarasov’s right and swept it into the far

Eberle became the first Kraken player with multiple power-play goals in a game, and Bjorkstrand got his second assist on the play to increase his team-leading points total to 40.

“The first one, we broke in well, had a couple good looks at it, and it went off their guy, off the stick, and went in,” Eberle ssaid. “The second one, we found a way to get back, created some movement, and made a play, and Jared found the puck.

Chinakhov got the Blue Jackets on the scoreboard with a backhander at 7:12 of the third period. He then pulled them within one on a breakaway with 4:02 remaining.

Tanev clinched it for the Kraken with an empty-netter with 13 seconds left.

“We didn’t have much to start the game, but found a way to push ourselves,” Columbus coach Pascal Vincent said. “Early on, their transition game really hurt us – they’re really good at that. They were connecting on breakouts in their neutral zone groups, then we got better at closing

the gap and putting pressure on their guys. I thought we created more turnovers. In the second period, we started to move, then in the third period, we were going pretty well.”

THE BROUGHT OUT THE KRAKEN

SEATTLE -- — The St. Louis Blues pulled off a two-goal rally for the second time in three games and continued to climb their way back into the playoff conversation in the Western Conference.

Pavel Buchnevich scored his second goal of the game 3:31 into overtime and the Blues beat the Seattle Kraken 4-3 on Friday night.

Pavel Buchnevich Scores Goal vs. Kraken

St. Louis, which trailed 3-1 in the second period, won its fourth straight game and picked up two points in the crowded race for one of the Western Conference's wild-card spots.

And they completed an impressive three-game road trip, rallying from a two-goal deficit to beat Calgary, topping Vancouver in overtime and finishing the trip with a comeback win in Seattle. All three games finished 4-3.

“We’re committed more to the standards that we’re asking for our guys and we’re starting to see that, and I think that has to do with resiliency,” interim St. Louis coach Drew Bannister said. “But I think guys are just more focused on what they can control right now and the things that

we can’t control aren’t a distraction.”

Buchnevich scored his 15th goal of the season 1:27 into the third period to pull the Blues even at 3, beating Joey Daccord to the glove side off a feed from Robert Thomas.

Robert Thomas Tallies Goal for St. Louis Blues on the Power Play

St. Louis controlled the puck and had the better chances early in overtime and Buchnevich brought a perfect end to the Blues’ road trip by beating Daccord off a feed from Brayden Schenn.

Buchnevich finished with three points.

“He could not give me (a) better pass,” Buchnevich said. “I just got to hit the net lately. I miss the net a lot, so it's good I hit the net right now.”

St. Louis (52 points) moved within one point of both Nashville and Los Angeles in the wild-card race, while Seattle (50 points) moved three points back. Both the Kraken and Blues have two games remaining before the All-Star break.

Thomas scored his 17th goal on a power play late in the second period that turned the momentum for St. Louis after Seattle had controlled most of the period. Oskar Sundqvist also scored on the power play 7:39 into the first period for St. Louis.

Jordan Binnington made 33 saves for the Blues.

Kraken's Pretty Passing Leads to Eeli Tolvanen's Goal

Oliver Bjorkstrand had a goal and an assist for Seattle, but the Kraken lost for the fifth time in six games. Eeli Tolvanen and Brian Dumoulin also scored for the Kraken.

“It’s probably a game I think we probably should win. I thought we played good enough,” Bjorkstrand said. "Unfortunately, they found a way to tie it and from there we couldn’t really get that last goal.”

Oliver Bjorkstrand Scores Power-Play Goal vs. Blues

Oliver Bjorkstrand

Bjorkstrand’s power-play goal 3:55 into the second period came moments after Daccord stopped a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush by the Blues. The save led to a breakout for Seattle and eventually Bjorkstrand’s sixth power-play goal of the season.

Bjorkstrand was also the reason for Tolvanen’s goal less than three minutes later. Bjorkstrand’s backcheck on Scott Perunovich led to a steal and Tolvanen eventually finished the play off a pass from Yanni Gourde.

But Seattle lamented the missed chances that could have given them a fourth goal. None was bigger than Jaden Schwartz missing an open net late in second period that would have given Seattle a 4-2 lead.

Daccord made 14 saves for the Kraken.

“It's a tough point to lose. We played hard. We played a pretty good hockey game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

During the course of any NHL team’s run at a Stanley Cup Playoffs bid, there are games that are must-win and others that are need-to-take-care-of-business wins. Wednesday was the latter with a rebuilding Chicago team missing a big piece of that re-do with rookie sensation Connor

Bedard out for another five weeks with a welcome-to-the-league broken jaw. Seattle jumped out to a two-goal advantage seven minutes into the game, then notched two more scores by the second intermission for a 4-1 lead. The teams traded goals early third period to set up the

eventual 6-2 victory. Joey Daccord faced 15 shots in a scoreless first period and finished with 34 saves.

That’s taking care of business when and as needed. St. Louis, fellow Western Conference wild-card pursuer who beat red-hot Vancouver Wednesday, is here Friday and then Columbus is on the business ledger Sunday. Seattle now has 20 wins on the season against 18 losses and nine

points from overtime/shootout losses. It adds up to 49 points amid a bunched group of seven teams vying for two spots. There are plenty of take-care-of-biz wins required and probably some must-wins come March and April.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Daccord screaming in celebration after tonight’s win

Donato Back in Town and...

In the first period during a power play, Kraken original (he scored the first-ever Seattle regular-season goal) and now Chicago forward Ryan Donato was busting net-front as is part of his usual game. SEA defenseman Will Borgen interceded to take him down and Donato took exception.

In fact, Donato was scrappy on more than one first-period shift, clearly noticed by CHI coach Luke Richardson and the Boston native’s new teammates.

In the third period, with the visiting Blackhawks tightening the score to 4-2 with a power play goal, Donato sped up ice from fairly deep in his own zone for a breakaway on Seattle goalie Joey Daccord (possible this very scenario happened before but in post-practice extra time at Kraken

Community Iceplex or maybe at optional morning skate?). The Kraken rookie made the save in Donato’s deke and backhand shot to thunderous cheers from the capacity crowd and seconds later Tomas Tatar got behind the Chicago defense for his own breakaway, which drew even more

thunder and decibels when Tatar beat Arvid Soderblom to salt this game.

Tatar scored later in the final frame to establish a 6-2 final with Will Borgen picking up his 16th assist as the top-four D-man continues his career year for points and time on ice. It is the veteran’s fourth and fifth goals along with four assists in 16 games (plus all sorts of right-time, right-

place instances in all zones) since he was wisely acquired in a trade by GM Ron Francis.

Tomas Tatar Tallies Goal vs. Blackhawks

“You look at it and go, maybe it's good luck,” said Dave Hakstol when asked about Tatar’s impressive production since joining the Kraken lineup.  “He’s found some good chemistry with a couple of different lines. Or maybe there's something [more] to it. He's an intelligent player who finds

a way to make the guys that he's playing with a little bit better. We've really liked his competitiveness on the puck, his poise in every situation. And the ability to mesh with a couple of different linemates [center Matty Beniers and fill-in center Jared McCann along with steady work with

Jordan Eberle]. He's been really effective and obviously tonight he really helped, put this game away.”

Energizing First Period

During a road game at Columbus that marked a franchise-record ninth straight victory on Jan. 13, coach Dave Hakstol said he sensed a drop in energy even as his squad tied the game three straight times by mid-match and finally finished off the Blue Jackets with three straight third-

period goals on the way to 7-4 win. But by the ensuing Monday afternoon in a game moved up into a Martin Luther King Day matinee, Hakstol, and his coaches knew an illness spreading among players was going to be a challenge (these insights revealed during a KJR radio interview with

play-by-play man and the PNW’s most ardent Detroit Lions fan, Everett Fitzhugh). Even ironman Adam Larsson had to call it quits for the day after doing his best to skate and defend and generate his underrated contribution to scoring chances.

Along with injuries to notables such as Matty Beniers (still out, left Columbus game early) and Vince Dunn (back Wednesday, not illness-related), the Kraken’s wattage was never the bright 100 percent that Hakstol expects from his group of one-for-all veterans and rookies (hello, Joey

Daccord, Tye Kartye, and Ryker Evans) more than holding their own against formidable opponents and more than few all-stars. The result of the energy drain was a four-game losing streak that didn’t help much in keeping close to the two wild-card spots available to Western Conference

contenders who can’t clinch third place or better in their divisions.

WE’RE YEETIN’ GOOD TONIGHT

Wednesday’s 6-2 win over Chicago might not be the long-term cure for securing a playoff spot, but it certainly represents a welcome tonic to reset the season. Hakstol said Tuesday’s practice was the first time in two weeks that “everyone felt good” about their energy and stamina levels.

It showed with first-period goals from Jared McCann (his team-leading 19th) and Jaden Schwartz (who nearly scored 13 seconds earlier on the same shift with a two-way game that looks as good as any point in his Kraken career).

"This game was huge for us,” said Eberle, who notched two primary assists on the night, including Tatar’s breakaway score. “We've lost four in a row. You know, we see the standings, we need to start climbing. That's a massive game [and two standings points].

“We got ahead there and then we stopped playing for 10 minutes in the first period. They came back, so we responded and found a way. But we still have little details we need to fix and you know, Joey was there to make some huge saves.”

Some positive signs along with McCann’s fifth goal in his last six games and Schwartz, recovered from an early-season injury, getting rewarded with his 10th goal of the year: Jordan Eberle masterminded the McCann goal with signature behind-the-net mobility and now has three goals

and four assists in the last half-dozen games. Andre Burakovsky, in just his 16th appearance of the season, notched a primary assist (his shot was deflected) on Schwartz’s goal. Everyone in the locker room and coaches' quarters would love to see the two-time Stanley Cup winner get on

a heater.

Brandon Tanev Nets Goal for Kraken

There’s more upward trends: Vince Dunn earned an assist three shifts into his return from the four-game layoff on Schwartz’s goal. Dave Hakstol, not prone to idle praise, reinforced his view that Dunn is a game-changer and big-moment performer during Wednesday’s morning skate

media scrum when confirming the Kraken leading scorer was ready to go. This particular assist was garden-variety, deftly keeping the puck in-zone, but still a team-leading 28th on the year.

Wait, What Happened?

Fifteen seconds into the middle period, Alex Wennberg was credited with his eighth goal of the season, but Chicago’s stalwart defenseman Seth Jones actually did most of the work. Jones and Wennberg were puck-battling when Jones gained control and moved the puck to a teammate

but bounced off rookie CHI defenseman Alex Vlasic and pinballed its way past Chicago goaltender Arvid Soderblom, who was chased from the net in his last game here at Climate Pledge Arena. This goal was clearly not his doing.

Nick Foligno tallies goal for Chicago Blackhawks on the power play

Late second period, Brian Dumoulin (with a starter pass from rookie Tye Kartye) zipped a pass to Brandon Tanev, who quick-released a shot to make it 4-1. Nice move from Tanev, still clearly beloved for mixing it up with three different Toronto players Sunday night.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- — Alex WennbergJaden Schwartz and Matty Beniers scored second-period goals and the Seattle Kraken pulled away for a 5-2 over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night, their seventh consecutive win.

Yanni Gourde and Vince Dunn also scored for the Kraken and Joey Daccord made 36 saves.

Alex Tuch tallies Goal vs. Kraken

“We went through a couple games losing and we had a little talk that we had to do something and we responded well and obviously right now you’re riding the wave,” Wennberg said.

Jeff Skinner and Alex Tuch scored for the Sabres while Devon Levi made 21 saves.

Alex Wennberg nets Goal for Kraken

“I think it was the mistakes we made, simple as that,” Sabres coach Don Granato said. “I don’t want to discredit them obviously, good hockey team and a team that came in here hot, confident ... but they’re in a stretch where they’re very confident and we made mistakes that, we pressed.”

Jaden Schwartz lights the lamp for Kraken

Skinner opened the scoring 4:57 into the game when he was left all alone in the right circle and put a shot through Daccord’s legs to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.

Gourde evened the score with 6:05 left in the first, finishing a rebound in front of the Buffalo net following a Sabres turnover.

Dunn gave the Kraken a 2-1 lead on the power play with 1:10 left in the first. Following a nice passing sequence, Dunn fired a wrist shot from the left circle to put Seattle ahead.

The teams quickly traded goals to open the second period. Tuch scored 50 seconds into the second, redirecting a shot from Skinner for his 11th goal of the season to tie it at 2. Wennberg scored on a breakaway two minutes later to restore Seattle’s lead, beating Levi with a backhand shot.

Matty Beniers tallies Goal vs. Sabres

The Kraken then took control of the game, slowing the pace and capitalizing on Buffalo’s mistakes.

Schwartz made it 4-2 on a redirection with 8:26 left in the second. Schwartz was making his return to the ice after missing 16 games with an upper-body injury.

“You always want to chip in,” Schwartz said. “Each night you see different guys chipping in and each line or the defense chipping in with game winners. That’s what makes it fun, having everyone involved and everyone excited for each other.”

Beniers increased Seattle’s lead to 5-2 with 3:47 left in the second on a shot to the glove side. Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin smashed his stick onto the Buffalo net in frustration after the goal went in.

Avalanche’s Artturi Lehkonen taken to hospital after flying head-first into boards

Story by Colin Gallant

The Colorado Avalanche lost another hockey game to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night — and they may have lost Artturi Lehkonen long-term after the forward went head-first into the boards and was transported to the hospital following a 4-3 loss.

Lehkonen was on the receiving end of a heavy hit from Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak in the second period at Ball Arena. It appeared his head hit the glass, and he remained on the ice for minutes before being helped off and down the tunnel.

“Artturi Lehkonen left tonight’s game in the second period. He is alert, responsive and has full movement. He is being taken to a local hospital as a precaution for further evaluation,” the team announced in a statement during the game.

It’s probably safe to assume that Lehkonen will not be suiting up when the Avalanche clash with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, although more details are expected to be revealed at some point on Friday.

It’s a brutal blow for a Colorado team that has struggled as of late; the Avs have lost four of six to fall to 8-4, but remain in second place in the Central Division.

The Avalanche just can’t seem to find a way to beat a less talented Kraken team. Seattle shocked Colorado — and the hockey world — by defeating the then defending Stanley Cup champions in Game 7 of the Western Conference first-round in 2023.

And the success in Denver continued on Thursday night, with the 5-6-3 Kraken getting a late goal from Oliver Bjorkstrand to seal the victory. It was Bjorkstrand’s second of the game, and came with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation.

“As a whole, that’s the way I want our team to compete. We played hard,” Avs coach Jared Bednar admitted afterwards. “We weren’t perfect, but you’re never going to be. We did a nice job.”

Colorado did look to be the better team in the contest, but couldn’t find a way to secure the victory against a pesky Seattle club.

The Avs will look for a better result when the Blues are in town on Saturday night, and will also hope for positive news on Artturi Lehkonen.

Nemec Scores 1st Goal of Career and Schmid makes 37 Saves as Devils top Kraken 2-1

Simon Nemec's first NHL goal gives Devils back the lead

The Devils waste no time in regaining their lead over the Kraken thanks to Simon Nemec's first-ever goal in the NHL.

New Jersey Devils vs. Seattle Kraken | 12/07 Game Highlights

SEATTLE -- — It took all of three NHL games for Simon Nemec to score his first goal. And it was a game-winner, no less.

Nemec scored midway through the second period, Akira Schmid made 16 of his 37 saves in the third and the New Jersey Devils beat the skidding Seattle Kraken 2-1 on Thursday night for their fifth victory in six games.

“He was able to jump in and find the lane. Great shot,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said of Nemec. "He had a couple opportunities where he was in on good offensive plays. His hockey sense, his ability to pick the right time, it’s been good.”

Nemec, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 draft, made his debut last week at home against San Jose and had two assists in his first game. His first goal was largely due to the play made by Jesper Bratt carrying the puck after Seattle was unable to clear its defensive zone. Bratt circled behind the

net and allowed Nemec to slide unmarked into the slot, where he beat Philipp Grubauer into an open side.

It was Bratt’s 19th assist of the season.

Ondrej Palat puts Devils ahead vs. Kraken

“I was really happy. I didn't look happy, but I was,” Nemec said.

Ondrej Palat scored his fourth goal late in the first period to give New Jersey the early lead. Schmid rebounded nicely after giving up five goals on 17 shots in his previous game against San Jose.

Schmid was peppered for a big chunk of the third and came up with several big stops. He robbed Jared McCann twice midway through the period, stuffed Alex Wennberg’s chance in front and watched Jordan Eberle’s backhand shot slide through the crease during a Seattle power play.

Jared McCann hit the crossbar on a 2-on-1 with 3:01 left in what was Seattle's last good look.

“There was a couple opportunities where they could have gained some momentum and he made some big saves for us,” Ruff said.

Tye Kartye scored his fifth of the season at 7:12 of the second period off a feed from Wennberg, but Seattle lost its sixth straight game. The slide is the longest for the Kraken since dropping seven straight in February 2022, midway through the franchise's first season.

“I thought our guys did a really good job of that today, not allowing anything that’s in the past or anything that’s coming in front of us affect our day or game today,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “We have to continue doing that. And we worked hard tonight. We competed extremely hard.”

Andre Burakovsky returned for Seattle after being out since Oct. 21 with an upper-body injury, but went to the locker room with about three minutes left in the second. Burakovsky was back on the ice for the third, but played only two shifts. Hakstol said Burakovsky was unavailable for

most of the period.

Tye Kartye's simple finish levels it up for the Kraken

Grubauer made 15 saves.

“We've got to change something. I mean, obviously, we can't let this just keep going,” Wennberg said.

Ryker Evans, Seattle’s second-round pick in the 2021 draft, made his NHL debut after being called up from Coachella Valley of the AHL. He became the fourth draft pick by the Kraken to play in an NHL game, joining Matty Beniers, Shane Wright and Ryan Winterton.

MONTREAL -- — Sean Monahan scored twice and Josh Anderson broke a 27-game goal drought dating to last season with an empty-netter that sealed the Montreal Canadiens' 4-2 win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night.

With Montreal up 3-2, and Seattle pressing, Anderson floated the puck from his own zone and into the Kraken’s net with 32 seconds left.

Jared McCann Scores Goal for Seattle Kraken

Anderson said he focused on getting back to the basics instead of worrying about his drought in the past couple weeks.

“I just said ‘You’ve got to get back to the way you’re playing, you’re in this league for a reason,’” he said. “Just go out there and do your thing, don’t focus about scoring, and just try to get back to your game and things will take care of themselves.”

Vince Dunn Capitalizes on the Power Play

Tanner Pearson also had a goal for Montreal (11-11-3), which won its first game at home since Nov. 11.

Samuel Montembeault made 31 saves in his first start since signing a three-year, $9.45 million contract extension with the Canadiens. He looked sharp early and robbed Kraken forward Alex Wennberg on two separate occasions with left-pad saves on the doorstep.

“There were a lot of distractions the last couple days, a lot of messages, so I wanted to put that behind me quickly,” said Montembeault. “My legs felt good tonight.”

Josh Anderson Scores Goal vs. Kraken

Vince Dunn, with a goal and an assist, and Jared McCann scored for Seattle (8-12-6), which lost its fifth straight game. Philipp Grubauer stopped 26 shots.

Monahan opened the scoring at 4:03 of the first period after Jake Evans forced a turnover. Pearson doubled Montreal’s lead 3:12 into the second period by burying a rebound.

Monahan scored his second on the power play to make it 3-0 at 6:58 of the second.

Tanner Pearson Tallies Goal vs. Kraken

He had gone 14 games without scoring, but was focused on Anderson.

“The guys are happy for Andy, he’s been through some tough times to start here,” said Monahan. “You get a win on home ice, he gets his first and yeah, it feels good.”

Seattle cut into the deficit as McCann fired a wrist shot past Montembeault at 14:05 of the second for his team-leading 12th goal.

Dunn brought the Kraken to within one with a slap shot over Montembeault’s right shoulder on the power play 4:49 into the third, but Seattle heads home from a four-game road trip without a point.

“It’s really unacceptable to come out with nothing,” Dunn said. “We see how well we can play so maybe we (can look at that) and understand how close we are, but being close doesn’t cut it, it doesn’t win you games, it needs to be complete and it’s definitely not even close to that right now.”

Veteran forward Brendan Gallagher played in his 700th NHL game, all with the Canadiens. Montreal drafted Gallagher in the fifth round, 147th overall, in the 2010 draft. He has 207 goals and 198 assists and is the 27th player to reach the 700-game milestone in franchise history.

OTTAWA, Ontario -- — Anton Forsberg stopped 39 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Ottawa Senators beat the Seattle Kraken 2-0 on Saturday night.

Mathieu Joseph and Drake Batherson scored goals to help the Senators snap a three-game ski d and get just their second home win. Forsberg's shutout was the fourth of his career and evened his record to 4-4-0 this season.

Coming into the game, Forsberg was last in the league among goaltenders who had played at least one game with an .850 save percentage.

“It’s been tough,” Forsberg said. “It’s been a lot of ups and downs, obviously. Some good games, some bad games. I’ve got to find consistency, the whole team’s got to find some consistency. We’ve got to win games on a more regular basis here.”

Joey Daccord finished with 26 saves for the Kraken, losers of four straight (0-3-1).

“We’re here to get two points so we’re not really trying to win the game of positives, negatives,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “We’re trying to win a hockey game.”

Trailing 2-0 going into the third period, the Kraken pushed hard to get on the scoresheet, but Forsberg was solid. Seattle outshot Ottawa 15-3 in the third.

“Capping that off with a win, I think, was big for our group,” Stutzle said. “I think we played pretty well for 60 minutes. I think we could have scored more goals, and our (defensemen) did a heck of a job there blocking every shot, even in the last 10 seconds (Erik Brannstrom) ate one

and that shows our commitment.”

Mathieu Joseph Scores Goal vs. Kraken

Senators coach D.J. Smith was also pleased with his team's effort.

“I just thought we stuck with it, blocked a lot of shots,” Smith said. “Obviously, goaltending was a big difference here tonight for us. Penalty kill got a couple of good kills. I thought we got a lot of contributions from a lot of guys away from the puck.”

Ottawa opened the scoring late in the first period after Matty Beniers lost an edge and lost the puck. Joseph was in front to pick it up and beat D’Accord for his fifth of the season with 2:39 remaining.

Both teams had a slow start to the second with the first shot of the period not coming until 8:22.

The Senators took a 2-0 lead at the 13-minute mark after Vladimir Tarasenko won a battle behind the net to feed Tim Stutzle, who passed to a wide-open Batherson. Stutzle picked up his 200th career point on the play.

Drake Batherson Scores Goal for Ottawa Senators

“The rim came and it just hit my stick and bounced in the air and took a really bad bounce,” Daccord said. “I was trying to corral it and couldn’t corral it and saw (defenseman Will Borgen) coming so I thought he was coming to pick it up and had a bit of miscommunication. He thought I

was going to play it, I thought he was going to pick it up and they capitalize. We’ll clean that up and I’ll be better for it.”

Ottawa had a brief scare when Thomas Chabot went down hard and left the ice favoring his right leg, but the defenseman returned after a brief absence.

Seattle’s Brandon Tanev returned to the lineup after missing the last two games. Justin Schultz played in his 700th NHL game.

TORONTO -- — Mitch Marner had his second career hat trick and added the shootout winner in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 4-3 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night.

Wearing a full shield and cage after taking a puck to the jaw against Florida on Tuesday night, Marner ended an eight-game goal drought with the offensive flurry. He also scored three goals against Detroit on Feb. 26, 2022.

“I haven’t been happy with my own game,” Marner said. “Haven’t been my best.”

Auston Matthews also scored in the shootout and had two assists to help Toronto improve to 12-6-3. Joseph Woll made 37 saves.

“There’s more space out there, guys are making plays,” Woll said. “Just trying to enjoy it.”

Jared McCann scored twice for Seatttle. Eeli Tolvanen added a goal and Philipp Grubauer stopped 25 shots.

“We were the better team … I call it as I see it,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “Thought we deserved a better outcome.”

Jared McCann tallies goal vs. Maple Leafs

Marner opened the scoring at 6:34 of the first period on a power play off a nice pass from William Nylander. Marner made it 2-0 21 seconds into the second on a one-timer that took a deflection right as a Seattle penalty was expiring.

McCann cut it to 2-1 on a power play at 3:37 of the second.

Marner completed the hat trick with 3:59 left in the second with his eighth goal of the season, taking a breakaway pass from Jake McCabe and beating Grubauer with a high shot.

Seattle rallied in the third, with Tolvanen scoring off a rush at 6:15 and McCann tying it with 6:36 to go.

“I was really proud of the guys," said forward Nick Foligno, one of Chicago's alternate captains. “Even when we wavered, even when we had a dip and it looked like we were kind of giving them some goals, we just find our way back again.”

Chicago announced that it is cutting ties with Corey Perry after the veteran forward engaged in what the organization called unacceptable conduct. The team said in a statement that an internal investigation showed Perry acted in violation of his NHL Standard Player Contract and club

policies “intended to promote professional and safe work environments.”

Pat Morris, Perry’s agent, did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Players, along with the coaching staff, were informed of Perry's departure by general manager Kyle Davidson after the team's morning skate. The news took an emotional toll, but the Blackhawks recovered to win for the third time at home in nine games.

“It's definitely a challenging day for the guys,” coach Luke Richardson said. “I thought they were totally professional tonight, did their jobs and kept mentally strong.”

Richardson said he did not address the team after Davidson.

“I was just part of the group that he addressed,” Richardson said. “There really was nothing else for me to say.”

Seattle goaltender Philipp Grubauer blocked 19 shots in his return from an undisclosed injury suffered a week ago against Calgary.

Katchouk and Dickinson scored 1:29 apart midway through the first period to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. It was Dickinson’s fifth goal in four games after he recorded his first career hat trick in a 4-3 overtime win against Toronto on Friday.

“Our puck play was pretty sloppy through the first two periods,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “That causes us a lot of problems against that team the way they're going to push as soon as they have possession.”

Beniers and Wennberg struck late in the first to tie it at 2.

Beniers trailed in on the play and fired a shot that slid through Seth Jones’ block attempt and then past Mrazek with 5:17 left in the period.

Wennberg added a short-handed goal with 37 seconds left. He swept wide and beat Mrazek to complete a 2-on-1 after Chicago got crossed up on coverage.

MacKenzie Entwistle Scores Goal for Chicago Blackhawks

Johnson put the Blackhawks back in front 4:22 into the second, beating Grubauer from the right circle. Entwistle made it 4-2 at 10:43, firing in a rebound of Anderson’s backhanded wraparound attempt.

Set up by Beniers’ dash down the ice and cross-ice feed, Kartye beat Mrazek at 6:51 of the third. Chicago killed a 5-on-3 Seattle power play over 1:03 late in the period.

During the game, Chicago announced it had acquired forward Anthony Beauvillier from Vancouver in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. The 26-year-old Beauvillier has two goals and six assists in 22 games this season.

SEATTLE -- — After hitting their first rough patch of the season, the Vancouver Canucks produced a strong response against their closest rival.

Teddy Blueger scored his first goal of the season on a short-handed breakaway early in the first period, Sam Lafferty and Nils Hoglander scored three minutes apart in the third period, and the Canucks beat the Seattle Kraken 5-1 on Friday night.

Nils Hoglander Scores Goal vs. Kraken

Dakota Joshua scored on a rebound in the second period and Quinn Hughes picked up another assist to remain the top point scorer in the NHL as the Canucks evened the season series with their Pacific Northwest rivals.

“I think everybody's waiting for us to fall apart. These are nice wins," Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said.

With a significant contingent of Canucks fans in attendance, Vancouver won for just the second time in its past five games. The Canucks went 11 of 12 games with at least a point, but losses to Calgary, Seattle and Colorado had stemmed some of Vancouver’s early momentum.

The Canucks also improved to 4-1-0 in Seattle since the Kraken joined the league.

“I wouldn't have called it an ugly win. I thought it was a good win for us,” Hughes said. “Obviously they had some good looks, but we had some looks too.”

Thatcher Demko made 23 saves and was excellent in the second period when Seattle controlled play but couldn't get a shot past the Vancouver goalie.

Blueger gave Vancouver the early lead, taking advantage of a turnover by Seattle defenseman Justin Schultz at center ice while on the power play and beat Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord. Joshua doubled the lead at 12:07 of the second period finding himself in the right spot to tap the

puck past Daccord after Conor Garland’s initial shot was saved.

Sam Lafferty Nets Goal vs. Kraken

Lafferty gave the Canucks a 3-1 lead at 9:43 of the third redirecting Filip Hronek’s slap shot past Daccord. Hughes picked up a secondary assist on the goal, extending his points streak to 10 straight games, the longest active streak in the league.

Hoglander scored at 12:38 and Ilya Mikheyev provided the capper at 17:30 just after a power play ended. Vancouver received seven points from its third and fourth forward lines.

“Those guys put a lot of effort in in a lot of games. They’ve been getting the chances and just haven’t scored so I’m happy for those guys,” Hughes said.

Seattle stumbled at its first chance to climb above the .500 mark after a sluggish start to the season. The Kraken had picked up points in five straight games.

Tye Kartye Tallies Goal vs. Canucks

Tye Kartye scored Seattle’s goal at 17:29 of the second period, his first goal in 15 games. Daccord made 22 saves. The Kraken failed to score in the first period despite being on the power play for eight minutes, although Matty Beniers had a goal overturned as Seattle was offside.

“It’s not an effort issue, it’s a readiness issue," Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. "They were the more ready team at the drop of the puck, and you saw that in our execution in the first five minutes of the hockey game.”

Ilya Mikheyev Scores Goal for Vancouver Canucks

Seattle lost forward Brandon Tanev to an apparent left leg injury late in the first period when he took a hit at center ice from Hoglander and tumbled to the ice. Tanev suffered an injury to the same leg in the season opener against Vegas on an illegal hit to the head by Brett Howden that

resulted in a suspension. Tanev missed about a month and returned on Nov. 13.

SEATTLE -- — Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde each had a goal and an assist in Seattle’s four-goal first period and the Kraken beat the NHL-worst San Jose Sharks 7-1 on Wednesday night.

Brandon Tanev and Adam Larsson also scored in the opening 20 minutes to help the Kraken get to the .500 mark for the first time this season at 8-8-5. They won for the fourth time in 10 home games, and have points in their last five games.

Jared McCann scored his team-leading ninth goal early in the second, Eeli Tolvanen added two third-period goals and Joey Daccord made 13 saves. Bjorkstrand finished with three assists and Jamie Oleksiak had two.

“I think we’re feeling it,” Bjorkstrand said. “Maybe a few lucky bounces off the glass, but no, we like playing together, and I think it just kind of went our way today. First period was a little bit back and forth. I mean, I thought we created some good chances. And in the second period, I

think we kind of took over.”

Mike Hoffman scored for San Jose in the third. The Sharks are 0-9 on the road and 3-15-1 overall.

“That was embarrassing. We weren’t ready to play,” San Jose coach David Quinn said. “Two breakaways in the first minute and a half – just absolutely embarrassing. We lost every single battle, got beat off the walls, and every time there was a 50-50 puck battle, we were fishing for

pucks and got on the wrong side of it.

“When you don’t skate and just run around chasing the puck, that’s what’s going to happen.”

Sharks starter Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 13 of the 17 shots he faced in the first period. Mackenzie Blackwood took over at the start of the second and had 10 saves.

Seattle needed only 1:28 to go in front. Alex Wennberg got the puck ahead to Tanev streaking down the center. Tanev poked a backhander through Kahkonen’s legs.

Bjorkstrand made it 2-0 with 9:24 left in the period with a shot from low in the right circle. Just 31 seconds later, Larsson fired from the right circle, sending it over Kahkonen’s glove and just under the crossbar. Gourde made it 4-0 with 1:15 left.

“We were ready to go at the drop of the puck,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “We came out, we scored early, but just the way we played from the drop of the puck, I thought, really, it put the momentum where we needed it to be.”

The four goals tied for the second-most first-period goals in franchise history. The first has been Seattle’s most productive period this season, with 25 of its 60 goals.

“The ability to score and knowing that you can feel confident in that ability,” Hakstol said. “I think brings a little bit of swagger to our team, and that’s one of the things that we’ve been looking to add.”

Daccord was 4:28 away from his first NHL shutout. He got his ninth start of the season with Philipp Grubauer out with an undisclosed injury sustained Monday against Calgary. Hakstol said Grubauer is day-to-day.

SEATTLE -- — After a terrible second period, the Calgary Flames could have easily shifted their focus toward the second stop on their lengthy road trip.

Instead, the Flames controlled the third period and found an equalizing goal before finally picking up an overtime victory.

Andrew Mangiapane scored the tying goal with 4:07 left in regulation, and Rasmus Andersson scored the winner 3:28 into overtime as the Flames rallied for a 4-3 win over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night.

“Our second period wasn’t good enough today. Sloppy. They were all over us,” Andersson said. “But we were down one goal on the road in the third we were just sticking with it and found a away to bring it to overtime.”

Andrew Mangiapane Nets Goal vs. Kraken

Mangiapane scored on a rebound past Seattle goalie Joey Daccord to pull the Flames even late. In overtime, Andersson had a clean chance saved by Daccord in the opening moments of the extra session. After Seattle was unable to get any of its chances past Dan Vladar in Calgary's net,

Andersson cleaned up his own rebound on a wraparound attempt for the winner.

Andersson’s goal was his third of the season. Elias Lindholm scored his fourth of the season 1:16 into the game and Jonathan Huberdeau scored on the power play midway through the first period.

Mangiapane’s goal was the 100th of his career and Mikael Backlund picked up his 500th career point with an assist on Andersson’s winner.

“I never maybe thought or expected myself to get to 500 points. ... Worked hard to get here today so I'm proud and excited by it,” Backlund said.

Vladar made 28 saves for the Flames as Calgary won for the third time in four games with the only loss in that stretch coming in a shootout. The Flames also improved to 6-0-0 all-time against the Kraken in Seattle, including a 6-3 win earlier this month.

Adam Larsson Scores Goal vs. Flames

Jordan Eberle and Jared McCann scored 2:04 apart in the second period to give Seattle a 3-2 lead. Vince Dunn added a goal and assist, but the Kraken have yet to win three straight games this season.

Eberle scored for the second straight game and now has seven points in five games. His backhanded shot off a scrum in front of net slid past Vladar to tie the game at 2-2 at 8:21 of the second.

Check out McCann banging his stick on the ice, calling for the shot from the point.

Barely two minutes later, McCann scored his eighth goal off a slick redirection in front of goal of Adam Larsson’s heavy slapshot. The puck caromed over Vladar’s shoulder and spun into the net to give Seattle a 3-2 lead.

It was Seattle's eighth overtime game, but the third time the Kraken have lost in OT when leading after two periods.

Vince Dunn's 50-footer sailing past Calgary goalie Dan Vladar to tie the game 1-1 at 8:42.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare can't help Seattle kill its first penalty, because he's the one in the box. But not for long; nine seconds later, Jonathan Huberdeau restores the Calgary lead 2-1 on the PP at 11:40..

Jordan Eberle tallies goal vs. Flames

“We got to find ways to win a little bit more,” Eberle said. “I don't know how many games we've had in overtime, seems like a lot, but we've got to find games to close out if we have leads and then find a way to come back and do it in OT.”

Daccord entered at the start of the second period for starter Philipp Grubauer and made 22 saves for Seattle.

Kraken Goaltender.

Grubauer started the game and made five saves on seven shots in the period, but was on the bench when the second period started. Grubauer had a heavy collision with Calgary’s Martin Pospisil early in the first period. Pospisil scored on a breakaway after Grubauer made the initial save,

but the goal was immediately waved off for goalie interference.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- — Jordan Eberle had a goal and two assists as the Seattle Kraken defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Saturday night.

Jamie OleksiakYanni Gourde and Matty Beniers also scored for Seattle (7-8-4), which won back-to-back games for the second time this season. Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves.

“More than not we’ve found ways to lose games in third periods rather than find a win, so it was nice to find a way to win here against a really good team that has obviously been pretty good at home,” Eberle said. “So hopefully this kick-starts us in the right direction.”

Hoglander scored with 11 seconds left, tipping in an airborne puck in front.

“Our changes were awful. Long shifts, that’s .500 hockey. You can’t win that way. It wasn’t good enough,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said. “Awful changes and long shifts and that’s what happens.”

Gourde gave the Kraken a 3-2 lead at 4:19 of the third. Eeli Tolvanen sent a cross-ice pass to Will Borgen, who popped it in front of the net for Gourde to convert on a tap-in.

“That’s the way you have to win on the road. We found a good level and we played hard for 60 minutes,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “Specialty teams were good, goaltending was good, and that’s how you win on the road.”

Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jordan Eberle also scored in the shootout for Seattle, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Philipp Grubauer stopped Noah Dobson to seal the victory after Yamamoto’s score.

The Kraken ended a streak of six consecutive shootout losses, dating to the start of last season. They had gone scoreless in their previous five shootouts.

“It was awesome tonight,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “Guys loosened up. And as soon as one went in for us, you can feel some of that tension go.”

Matty BeniersAlex Wennberg and Yamamoto scored in regulation for the Kraken, all on power plays. Seattle went 3 for 4 on the power play after going a combined 0 for 7 in its previous two games.

Yamamoto tied it at 3 at 4:50 of the third. The Spokane, Washington, native received a pass from Jaden Schwartz and scored on a backhanded move for his third goal of the season.

“To get that win is huge for us,” Yamamoto said. “Just be able to contribute to the team and the team’s success, it feels really good.”

The Kraken rebounded from blowing a late two-goal lead in an overtime loss at Edmonton on Wednesday night.

“That was a disappointing loss, because we felt like we did so many really good things there,” Hakstol said. “But true to the group in here, we addressed a couple of things that we felt like we could do better and then we just said, ‘Let’s turn the page.’

“Our guys found a way through it, and that’s real credit to them.”

Anders LeeCasey Cizikas and Dobson scored in regulation for the Islanders, who lost their seventh in a row. It marks their longest losing streak since dropping 11 straight early in the 2021-22 season.

Bo Horvat and Oliver Wahlstrom scored in the shootout for New York. Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots in regulation and OT.

“It’s frustrating, for sure,” Lee said. “But there’s no quit in this team. There’s no quit in the group. We’re playing good hockey. It’s just not getting the results.”

After Lee scored on a power play 3:46 into the game, Beniers answered with a power-play goal midway through the first. He fired a wrist shot from the left circle for his second on the season.

Wennberg added another power-play goal with 1:31 left in the first, one-timing a feed from Bjorkstrand to give the Kraken a 2-1 lead. It was Wennberg’s second in as many games after opening the season with a 16-game scoreless streak.

Cizikas tied it at 14:25 of the second with his third of the season and 100th of his career. Dobson then gave New York a 3-2 lead 1:48 into the third, scoring on a power play for his fifth.

EDMONTON, Alberta -- — Evander Kane scored the tying goals in the third period and then completed his seventh career hat trick 2:57 into overtime, rallying the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday night.

Connor McDavid also scored, Evan Bouchard had three assists and Leon Draisaitl had two as the Oilers came back from two goals down to win their third straight. Stuart Skinner had 33 saves.

“I think we’re starting to find our groove a little bit here,” Kane said.

Jared McCannAlex Wennberg and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare all scored in the second period to give Seattle a 3-1 lead. Joey Daccord finished with 28 saves as the Kraken lost for the fifth time in six games (1-3-2).

“I feel like we had our opportunities to score a couple of more goals.” Wennberg said. “In general, I think we had a pretty good game. It’s a tough way to end it. Things happen out there, but we can’t lose this game. This is one of those games we have to fight through and find a way to

win and unfortunately we didn’t today.”

Evander Kane Tallies Goal vs. Kraken

Kane pulled the Oilers within one with 6:32 remaining in the third when he redirected Bouchard’s shot from the point.

Kane tied it with just 46 seconds remaining and Skinner pulled for the extra man. Draisaitl chipped a pass through the crease to Kane to go upstairs on Daccord.

In the extra period, Zach Hyman waited for a Seattle defender to go down before sending the puck across to Kane for his seventh goal of the season.

“Going into a long road trip here, to get a couple wins finally at home in a row is nice. We’ve come back before, down going into the third period,” Kane said. “It was nice to be able to do that for the first time this year.”

It was Edmonton's second straight win since Kris Knoblauch replaced Jay Woodcroft as coach on Sunday.

Evander Kane Nets Goal vs. Kraken

Knoblauch was pleased his team recovered from a dreadful second-period stretch.

“The last 12 minutes of the second period was almost rock bottom, in my opinion. I didn’t think we played well at all. But in the third period, we showed a lot of passion and perseverance to stick with it,” the coach said. “Hopefully the way that we won today makes us a better team in the

long run.”

Edmonton got on the scoreboard first at 5:21 of the second period when Draisaitl sent McDavid in all alone to beat Daccord with a backhand move. McDavid scored his second in two games and his fourth of the season.

Seattle tied it 1:59 later when a rebound of Jordan Eberle's shot deflected off McCann’s shin pad and into Edmonton’s net. It was McCann’s seventh.

The Kraken took a 2-1 lead at 9:24 of the middle period after a bad clearing attempt allowed Vince Dunn to fire a shot from the point that was tipped by Bellemare past Skinner for his second.

Seattle went ahead 3-1 with 2:39 remaining in the second as Wennberg picked up a rebound out front and executed a spin-around shot that eluded Skinner for his first.

Edmonton caught a break early in the third by avoiding an own-goal. With a Seattle penalty upcoming, Oilers defender Vincent Desharnais attempted to pass out from the corner, but there was nobody there. The puck hit the Edmonton’s post with Skinner pulled for an extra attacker.

The Oilers placed Mattias Janmark (shoulder) and Dylan Holloway (lower body) on long-term injured reserve. Raphael LavoieAdam Erne, and Philip Broberg were recalled from Bakersfield of the AHL. Also out hurt for Edmonton is Connor Brown (lower body), but he’s been skating and is

expected to be ready for the start of their upcoming road trip.

The win was coach Jared Bednar’s 300th, coming in his 550th game. He is the franchise’s all-time winningest coach.

“As a coach, you want them all to get rewarded for their hard work,” said coach Jared Bednar, who earned his 300th win. “One way to get rewarded is me giving them more ice time, but the production is what they’re looking for and what you need in order to win hockey games. So guys

are feeling good about themselves, and it can carry over and give your team a little bit of confidence that you can get the job done under difficult circumstances.”

Brandon Tanev scored his first of the season for Seattle, making his return to action after suffering a lower body injury in the season opener at Vegas on Oct. 10. Joey Dacord finished with 26 saves.

Colton gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead with 5:48 left in the period when he was at the left post to poke in the rebound of Toews' shot that had bounced off the chest of Dacord. It was his fourth of the year.

“I think we did a great job of coming to the rink that next day (after Saturday’s 8-2 loss to St. Louis),” Colton said. “We had a talk and kind of just said, ’All right, we’ve got to flush it. This is unacceptable, took the slap on the wrist with video and then kind of learned from it.”

Makar made it 3-1 at 4:14 of the third with his fourth. Drouin’s goal at 9:09 was his first. Nichuskin’s with 3:17 left was his third.

“There were stretches of good hockey from our group, then there were times when we were not in the game and giving them too much time and space,” Tanev said. “When you give great players too much time and space, you make it look easy for them.”

Vince Dunn set up Tanev’s goal with a hard shot from the left circle. The puck rebounded to Tanev at the right post, and he shoveled it in at 6:13 of the first period.

Seattle thought it had taken a 2-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Alex Wennberg with 5:19 left in the opening period. But the Avalanche challenged it, claiming goaltender interference, and the challenge was upheld.

“When things aren’t going well, you want to have a cushion and it makes everybody feel a little more comfortable,” Hyman said. “Today was a good day to get back in the win column and just breathe.”

It was the 10th time in Oilers franchise history that a player scored three goals in an opening period. Hyman became the second Oilers player with a natural hat trick in the first period, joining Wayne Gretzky who did it on Dec. 17, 1986.

“I have nothing but huge respect for Zach Hyman and the game he brings to the table every night,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “He was bound and determined to make sure we were coming out with a lead in that first period.”

Dylan Holloway also scored a first-period goal for the Oilers, and Stuart Skinner had 17 saves.

Jaden Schwartz Nets Power-Play Goal

Jaden Schwartz enters tonight's matchup with the Oilers having tallied a point in Seattle's last eight games, which is tied for the third-longest active point streak in the NHL.

A goal or an assist tonight would give Schwartz a point in nine consecutive games for the first time in his career.

Jaden Schwartz scored a power-play goal for the Kraken with 17:36 left in the game. Schwartz has scored in four straight games and extended his career-best point streak to nine games.

“We weren’t desperate enough. We knew that they’re hungry for wins and we came out flat. We’ve done it a few times at home now,” Schwartz said. “Unacceptable. We’ve got to be way more aggressive, way more assertive and get to our game right away. We were too much standing

around and watching. It just all around wasn’t good enough.”

Seattle starting goaltender Philipp Grubauer was pulled after allowing four goals on 17 shots in the first period. Joey Daccord came on for the final two periods and had nine saves. The Kraken were held to a season-low 18 shots.

Hyman opened the scoring midway through the first period with a backhand over the shoulder of Grubauer, after taking a pass from Evander Kane on the rush.

He picked up his second on a power play with 5:51 left in the first, knocking in a loose rebound after a shot from the point.

“Obviously anytime you can capitalize on those chances it’s fun,” Hyman said. “There were a lot of good bounces in the first.”

The Oilers took a 4-0 lead going into the first intermission when Holloway scored with 17.9 seconds left. Ryan McLeod’s shot went wide and bounced off the boards right to Holloway next to the net.

“It was a hard game to win,” Skinner said. “It was hard fought, and that’s what it takes to win in the NHL. We’ve just got to keep on doing that, keep on doing the things that are going to make us successful.”

DENVER -- — Oliver Bjorkstrand accomplished a little Seattle Kraken history with his late-game goal.

Not that he remembers all that much about the sequence.

Bjorkstrand scored his second goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining and the Kraken beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Thursday night after squandering a two-goal lead.

It's the latest go-ahead goal in regulation for a franchise in its third season, according to NHL research.

Oliver Bjorkstrand Nets Goal vs. Avalanche

"We don't know about you, but we're Feelin' 22"

“Barely remember it,” Bjorkstrand said.

A quick recap: Bjorkstrand was down low and sent a backhanded pass to Eeli Tolvanen, who was standing in front. Tolvanen's shot deflected off goaltender Ivan Prosvetov and to Bjorkstrand after he skated to the other side of the net. He lined it in for his sixth goal of the season.

There's just something about this building, against this team, that brings out the best in Bjorkstrand. He had two goals to lift Seattle by the Avalanche in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series last season.

“Nice to get the win," Bjorkstrand said. “That’s the most important.”

Jaden Schwartz and Matty Beniers also scored to help the Kraken hand the Avalanche their first home loss in five games this season.

Philipp Grubauer had 23 saves against his former team.

Devon Toews Scores Goal vs. Kraken

Bowen ByramNathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin scored for Colorado in the second of three meetings with the Kraken (the Avalanche won 4-1 last month in Seattle). Prosvetov had 19 saves in his third appearance for Colorado since being acquired on waivers.

Seattle threatened to run away, leading 2-0 and 3-1 in the second. The Avalanche tied it on Nichushkin’s tip-in goal with 7:45 remaining.

“As a whole, that’s the way I want our team to compete. We played hard,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We weren’t perfect, but you’re never going to be. We did a nice job.”

There was a scary moment midway through the second period when Colorado forward Artturi Lehkonen took a bump from 6-foot-7, 257-pound defenseman Jamie Oleksiak and slid head-first into the boards. Lehkonen was helped to the locker room and taken to the hospital for further

evaluation. The team said he was “alert, responsive and has full movement.”

Bednar didn't have an update after the game. He said he only had a quick look at the play but thought Lehkonen “got caught in a bad spot and ran into a big guy," Bednar explained.

Beniers gave Seattle a 3-1 lead midway through the second period with a power-play goal. It was his first score of the season. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie last season with 24 goals and 57 points.

“Felt good,” Beniers said. “Felt great.”

Seattle was without Jordan Eberle after the the forward suffered a cut to his leg from a skate blade during practice Wednesday. He's listed as day-to-day.

Kraken forward Ryan Winterton was called up from Coachella Valley of the American Hockey League and made his NHL debut. He had one shot in just over seven minutes.

Colorado defenseman Cale Makar marked his 250th career NHL game with an assist. Makar’s 261 points are the most ever by a defenseman through 250 games, with Bobby Orr second (256 points).

“I felt like we deserved a better outcome,” Makar said. “Compete-wise, I think we played to the best of our ability.”

As part of the annual “Hockey Fights Cancer” night, the Avalanche held a dedication ceremony in the first period for the late Peter McNab, who died last November after losing his fight with cancer. The broadcast booth was named in honor of the longtime NHL player/analyst.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- — Nick Bjugstad scored the only goal in a shootout and the Arizona Coyotes beat Seattle 4-3 on Tuesday night to snap a four-game losing streak to the Kraken.

Matias MaccelliBarrett Hayton and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes, who converted twice on the power play and have won four of six home games at 5,000-seat Mullett Arena this season.

Bjugstad has delivered the deciding goal in both of Arizona's shootout wins this season.

“Sometimes you score and you just get confidence from it,” said Bjugstad, who has 17 shootout goals in his 13-year career. “I didn’t really expect coming into the league to be shooting. I had a lot of reps when I was a young player in Florida. That helps with the nerves."

Eeli TolvanenJared McCann and Jaden Schwartz scored for the Kraken, who have lost four of six overall. They've played five overtime games already this season, winning twice.

“It's a tight league,” defenseman Justin Schultz said. “Every game is a battle. I think we are doing a lot of good things, especially in overtime, this year. It's just not going in right now for us. It (stinks) not getting the two points, but learn from it."

Tolvanen scored in his second straight game, and McCann has scored in four of the last five.

Hayton scored his first goal of the season, and Maccelli extended his career-best point streak to nine games with his second goal during the run.

“I'm a competitor,” Hayton said. “I want to score. I want to produce, without a doubt. At the same time, you have to trust the process. Wanting to get off to a good start as a team, that personal stuff comes second. You want to focus on playing a complete game and having an impact on games."

Coyotes goalie Connor Ingram, who made 35 saves, stopped Matty Beniers on a breakaway with 1:06 remaining in regulation. Beniers, who won the Calder Trophy with 24 goals as a rookie last year, has not scored in 13 games this season.

Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord, who had 25 saves, played at Arizona State when the school used a recreational rink 2 miles from campus before Mullett opened last season.

“We talk about even when you don’t have your A game, you need to find a way to crawl in,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “You need to dig deep and find a way to win. I won’t pretend we played an excellent game, but we battled extremely hard and willingness to fight made the difference."

The Kraken scored on their first shot on goal 40 seconds into the game, after Tolvanen poked the puck loose along the center boards and Jamie Oleksiak picked it up to start a 2-on-0 break. Tolvanen and Yanni Gourde exchanged tap passes before Tolvanen hit an open side to beat a defenseless Ingram.

Maccelli tied it when he skated into the slot and beat Daccord with a wrist shot off the left post at 6:07 of the first period.

Keller cleared the puck off the goal line after McCann's shot midway through the second to keep the score even.

Hayton gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead four minutes into the second period when he tipped in Keller's shot from the right circle for Arizona's 12th power-play goal of the season. Schultz answered less than a minute later with a wrist shot through traffic to make it 2-all.

Schwartz and Keller scored on power plays a minute apart early in the third. Schwartz hit a post but flipped in his own rebound at 1:16 before Keller scored from the right circle 42 seconds later to make it 3-3.

SEATTLE -- — Yegor Sharangovich and Mikael Backlund scored early in the third period to lift the Calgary Flames past the Seattle Kraken, 6-3 on Saturday night.

Sharangovich broke a 2-2 tie with a tip-in at 1:33, and Backlund scored on a rebound at four minutes after goalie Philipp Grubauer made a sprawling save on A.J. Green’s breakaway.

“I thought we went out in the third and took care of the game right away,” Backlund said. “We dictated the third period. I thought we played a really mature game all night, didn’t give them too many shots and chances. It was really good.”

Calgary snapped a six-game losing streak.

“We’ve dropped a bunch in a row, so you don’t necessarily want to think it’s that big of a game,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “But it’s important for us because we played the right way. I think we limited scoring shots and there were a lot of guys that elevated their game."

Martin Pospisil and Noah Hanifin also scored for Calgary, and Backlund and Rasmus Andersson had empty-net goals. It was Pospisil’s first NHL goal.

“Pretty much living the dream right now,” Pospisil said. “It’s something probably I will never forget.”

SEATTLE -- — Philipp Grubauer made enough important saves that the Seattle Kraken goalie could be forgiven for taking his first penalty in nearly eight years.

“It's kind of awkward not being able to sit in the box there after taking a penalty,” Grubauer joked. “But, no added pressure. It's the same mentality. You've got to stop everything.”

Grubauer stopped 33 shots, Vince Dunn scored his second goal of the season off a faceoff 8:38 into the third period to give Seattle a two-goal advantage, and the Kraken beat the Nashville Predators 4-2 on Thursday night.

The Kraken withstood a disjointed and sometimes sloppy first two periods thanks to Grubauer, who was terrific, especially in the second period.

He stopped 14 of 15 shots in the period, several right around the goal mouth. Grubauer also picked up the second penalty of his career when he was called for tripping Nashville’s Liam Foudy late in the period. It was his first penalty since a 2016 game against Ottawa while playing for

Washington.

“The second period, that's the key point where (Grubauer) did a really good job getting us through that period and putting us in a good spot coming into the third period and the other guys picked it up from there,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

Coming off a career high in points last season, Dunn’s slap shot beat goalie Juuse Saros to the glove side to give Seattle a 4-2 lead.

The Kraken also got goals from Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jared McCann in the first period and defenseman Brian Dumoulin’s goal late in the second period snapped a 2-2 tie. Dumoulin scored in consecutive games for the first time in his career.

After playing seven of its first 10 games on the road, Seattle won consecutive games for the first time this season following its overtime win over Tampa Bay on Monday. The Kraken will spend most of November at home with seven of the next 11 games on home ice.

“It’s great to contribute. I think that’s the biggest thing, especially with this team is everyone’s got to contribute for us to win. And we’ve done that here in this last stretch,” Dumoulin said.

Tommy Novak scored in the dying seconds of a power play 6:35 into the game and Roman Josi got the only shot past Grubauer in the second period with his second goal of the season, also on the power play. Nashville has dropped the first two games of a five-game road trip.

Nashville was 2 for 5 on the power play after going 0 for 4 against Vancouver to open the road trip.

“Felt like we had a lot of looks, a lot of really good chances, especially in that second period,” Josi said. “We had a lot of pressure. Felt like we had a had a lot of really good chances we couldn't capitalize on.”

Saros made 26 saves, but faced far more traffic than the first meeting against Seattle in the first week of the season when he made 23 saves in a 3-0 shutout.

Nashville Predators winger Gustav Nyquist on Thursday provided yet another example of hockey players possessing a different kind of toughness when he casually retrieved his teeth from the ice in the middle of a game.

During the Predators’ game against the Seattle Kraken, Nyquist found himself among a crowd hovering in front of the Kraken’s net. As everyone was fighting for the puck, Kraken defenseman Adam Larsson swung his stick a little too high and it connected squarely with Nyquist’s face.

Nyquist immediately dropped to his knees and put his hand over his mouth. Seconds later, he removed one of his gloves and began picking up the teeth that onto the ice.

TAMPA, Fla. -- — Jared McCann scored a power-play goal 2:53 into overtime, and the Seattle Kraken beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Monday night.

With Tampa Bay’s Nick Paul in the penalty box for hooking, McCann converted a one-timer from the top of the left circle for his fifth goal of the season. The Kraken earned their first victory in five tries against the Lightning since entering the NHL in 2021.

The Lightning trailed 3-1 after one period, but Alex Barre-Boulet got them within one by scoring a power-play goal 3:40 into the second. Brandon Hagel tied it with 5:32 remaining in the third.

“This game was lost in the first period,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “We played hard enough to get a point, but this is the NHL. If you spot a team three goals, you need four to win.”

Brandon Hagel Tallies Goal vs. Kraken

Brandon Hagel Scores on the Power Play for Lightning

The best scoring chance belongs shorthanded to Brandon Hagel, whose fancy moves free him for a close-in backhand which Grubauer denies.

Seattle's PK looks better killing an Alex Wennberg high-stick at 14:27. So despite a 15-13 Tampa shot advantage in the middle 20, the Kraken will take a lead into the third period.

Yamamoto set up Gourde’s goal at 13:08 of the opening period to give Seattle a 2-0 lead, and then scored a power-play goal at 15:52.

“I thought this was his best game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said of Yamamoto, who matched his point total through the first nine games. “He had a ton of energy tonight. ... He was involved in every part of the game. He had the puck on a string, and he was making plays throughout

the entire game. It was nice to see him get rewarded with a power-play goal.”

Dumoulin had the first goal for the Kraken, who had been 0-4-0 against Tampa Bay since entering the NHL in 2021.

Alex Barre-Boulet Nets Power-Play Goal

Tanner Jeannot scored in the first and assisted on Barre-Boulet’s power-play goal for the Lightning, who finished 3-0-2 on a five-game homestand. Jonas Johansson, coming off back-to-back shutouts, finished with 40 saves.

“We did a good enough job in the last two periods to come back and get a point,” Hagel said. “I can’t really say we deserved to get the two points after the way we played in the first period, but we got the point. We’re going on the road, so we’ve got to take the point and move on.”

The Kraken ended Johansson’s shutout streak at 132:06 when Dumoulin banged home the rebound of Justin Schultz’s shot.

Gourde, a Stanley Cup winner with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021, made it 2-0 one minute later, beating Johansson with a wrist shot from the slot.

Before the game, coach Dave Hakstol said he wanted to see his team play with "swagger." Shots are a swagger-like 20-9 for Seattle.

Tampa Bay cut the deficit in half at 13:37 when Jeannot’s backhander beat Grubauer.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi finishes off lovely Hurricanes move to make it 2-

Carolina’s Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored with 4:24 left in regulation to force the extra session. Necas had an assist on that goal, with defenseman Brady Skjei sparking that transition. Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots for the Hurricanes, who overcame a two-goal deficit.

“Pretty happy with that game, especially the response,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I think we got the two points we deserved.”

Oliver Bjorkstrand had a goal and an assist and Devin Shore also scored for the Kraken, who have yet to win consecutive games this season. Joey Daccord, who has recorded both of Seattle’s victories, made 42 saves.

He bemoaned the shots he didn’t stop, particularly the one from Kotkaniemi.

“Just disappointing I couldn’t make the save,” Daccord said. “It’s a frustrating loss being up late in the game.”

The Hurricanes, who were coming off a 2-4-0 road stretch, played in just their second home game.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the road trip we wanted,” Skjei said, noting the comeback was uplifting. “We’ve always had that confidence in this room. We never get too rattled when we’re down.”

Bjorkstrand scores goal against Hurricanes

Seattle was aiming to beat Carolina for the second time this season.

Necas had four overtime winners last season.

“That’s his time, for sure,” Brind’Amour said. “He loves that.”

Martin Necas tallies goal vs. Kraken

Kotkaniemi and Necas became the third and fourth Carolina players to reach the four-goal mark this season.

Andersen didn’t play in the past three games as he recovered from an injury and he wasn’t tested much during stretches.

Bjorkstrand has both of his goals this season against the Hurricanes. He scored first at 11:24 of the first period.

Shore’s first goal of the season came less than 3 1/2 minutes later when he skated in on Andersen and slid the puck under the goalie’s pads.

Necas got the Hurricanes on the board with 1:38 left in the first period after the Kraken mishandled the puck while trying to clear it from the zone.

The Hurricanes trailed 2-1 through two periods despite a 31-14 advantage in shots on goal. Daccord did his part.

“He helped us with his ability to play the pucks,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “They’re a shot-volume team.”

DETROIT -- — Jordan Eberle scored with 5 seconds remaining in overtime and the Seattle Kraken snapped the Detroit Red Wings' five-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory on Tuesday night.

Eberle's game-winner was set up by Jared McCann, who tied the game on a power play goal with 1:22 left. The Kraken had won only one of their first six games.

“It was huge just to get one there and really, this will spark us a little bit,” Eberle said.

“I was pretty gassed getting to the other end there,” McCann said. “I saw the puck go off the glass and I saw Eb beat his guy off the wall. Just tried to lay it in there for him so he could tip it in.”

Jaden Schwartz scored two goals and Tye Kartye added the other for the Kraken. Joey Daccord made 23 saves.

Alex DeBrincat scored his league-high ninth goal this season for Detroit.

Dylan Larkin and Shayne Gostisbehere each contributed a goal and two assists. Larkin has recorded at least one point in all seven of the Red Wings games. Joe Veleno also scored for the Red Wings, while Ville Husso made 31 saves.

“We got a point, but we feel like we should have had two,” Larkin said.

Jared McCann scores on the power play for Seattle Kraken

Detroit scored three power play goals to erase a 3-1 deficit in the third. Gostisbehere scored his third goal this season with a shot from the right circle. Eberle was in the penalty box for tripping Larkin.

After Devin Shore was handed a double-minor for high sticking, Larkin tied it when he lifted a shot over Daccord’s stick.

With Alex Wennberg in the penalty box for holding, DeBrincat whistled a shot from the left side past Daccord's glove.

After Larkin was called for hooking, McCann tied it on a wrist shot with 1:22 remaining in regulation.

“They’ve been rolling on their power play and they made good on them,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “To be able to push back — we’ve done it a couple of times now. We haven’t gotten rattled, we haven’t gone away after giving up a lead.”

Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was happy how his team responded after trailing by two goals.

“When you are down 3-1 going into the third period and you get a point out of it, you are going to take that,” he said. “Obviously, it would have been great to finish it off, but we did a good job of getting back into the game. If we don’t take the late penalties, we would have won it.”

Following a scoreless first period, the Kraken took a 3-1 lead in the second. Detroit struck first as Veleno scored on a redirect of a Olli Maatta shot from the point.

With Justin Holl in the penalty box for holding, Schwartz answered with a power play goal on a backhander from the slot. Schwartz then gave Seattle the lead with 2:06 left in the period.

Kartye made it 3-1 in the final minute of the period after a controversial play. Schwartz tossed his stick in the Kraken zone, which broke up a potential scoring chance for Maatta. The officials didn't blow the whistle and moments later, Kartye scored on a breakaway.

Kraken dealt brutal Andre Burakovsky injury update

10/23/23

Story by Andrew Meyers

The Seattle Kraken have not gotten off to the finest of starts this season and they now find themselves down one of their top forwards for the foreseeable future. Andre Burakovsky suffered an upper-body injury on Saturday against the New York Rangers and subsequently required

surgery. He’ll be out for six to eight weeks according to Frank Seravalli.

It’s a big blow for the Kraken as Burakovsky is a solid goalscorer and one of Seattle’s best scoring options. Though he has yet to score a goal this season and has two points in six games, the winger averaged 18.5 goals a season over the last four seasons. He signed a five-year deal with

the Kraken in July 2022 after helping the Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup. He was one of Seattle’s first splash signings.

Burakovsky made his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals in 2014, the same team that drafted him in the first round in 2013. He spent five seasons with them before landing with the Avalanche where he stayed for three seasons. He won a championship with both teams.

Burakovsky picked a great time to have a breakout season in 2021-22 as he notched carer-highs in games played, goals, assists and points in a contract year. He played in 49 games in his first season with the Kraken, recording 39 points on 13 goals and 26 assists.

The Kraken have one win in their first six games of the season after coming a win shy of the Western Conference Final last spring. Without Andre Burakovsky, their road back to a winning record got a lot more difficult.

Kraken’s never before seen arena feat will have the entire NHL taking notice

Kraken’s never before seen arena feat will have the entire NHL taking notice

 Story by Tristin McKinstry

The Seattle Kraken are looking to build upon an incredibly successful sophomore season in the NHL. Seattle rebounded from a poor inaugural campaign and made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2023. However, things on the ice are not going great to begin the new season. Off the ice,

though, the Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena may be industry trailblazers.

Last week, Climate Pledge Arena became the first sports venue in the world to receive Zero-Carbon Certification, according to The Seattle Times. The Kraken received this certification through the International Future Living Institute (IFLI), a nonprofit organization.

“I’ve got like 19 (championship) rings someplace. This to me is one of the proudest things ever because this will last a lifetime,” Kraken owner Tim Leiweke told The Seattle Times. “This will last my daughter’s lifetime. And I think we’re going to get the rest of the industry to answer the

charge now.”

To obtain certification, Climate Pledge Arena had to adhere to strict requirements from the IFLI. These requirements included providing documentation that the arena has replaced fossil fuel usage with renewable energy. Climate Pledge has solar panels on the roof and parking garage to

supply electricity. The arena also receives clean power from Puget Sound Energy’s Lower Snake River wind farm, according to The Seattle Times.

Obtaining Zero-Carbon Certification usually takes five years. However, Climate Pledge pulled the feat off in only two. By 2025, the Kraken are on track to play in a venue entirely powered by self-produced solar and wind energy.

This news may not register on the radar of most sports fans, even local ones. That said, this is an incredible development and an amazing achievement on behalf of Kraken ownership. Let’s see if other sports venues, NHL or otherwise, follow in Seattle’s footsteps.

Kraken react to crushing Game 7 loss to Stars, ‘changing the landscape of hockey’ in Seattle

5/16/2023

Story by Colin Gallant

The Seattle Kraken were the surprise of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, authoring a massive upset over the Colorado Avalanche in Round 1 before losing a tight, 2-1 affair in Game 7 against the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

After getting within one win of the Western Conference Final in just their second year of existence, the team vowed to be back, per NHL.com’s Nicholas J. Cotsonika.

“I love this group. I think there’s something here,” forward Yanni Gourde said afterwards. “It’s the culture, and that’s what wins in the playoffs, is culture. It’s what you’re willing to do to win, and I think this group, we have it.”

The Kraken had an excellent 2022-23 campaign, nearly upsetting two top teams in the Avalanche and Stars after winning 46 games and reaching the 100-point plateau in just their second year.

“You get a taste of the postseason here as a group, and you win a series and almost win another one,” Jordan Eberle echoed. “I think you just grow…This is a tough league to win in. It’s a tough trophy to win. But I think we have a foundation as a group here, and you just want to keep building.”

Coach Dave Hakstol was proud of his group, and says the team greatly benefitted the city of Seattle.

“That’s a perspective that I want our players also to have — and it probably won’t register home tonight — but this group also changed the landscape of hockey in Seattle,” Hakstol explained. “This particular group had the guts to change the culture, the trajectory, the belief, of our franchise as well.”

Climate Pledge Arena was rocking not only in the playoffs but throughout the regular season, proving that the city was well-worthy of a National Hockey League team.

“I think the group got tighter and tighter together,” goaltender Phillip Grubauer said. “We play like a real team, and everybody’s playing for each other, and that’s what made it fun. We enjoyed those moments…That’s why we play.”

Expect the Seattle Kraken to be knocking on the door as one of the top teams in the Western Conference again next season.

SEATTLE -- — Artemi Panarin scored twice, Filip Chytil had three assists and the New York Rangers beat the Seattle Kraken 4-1 on Saturday night.

Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere also scored for the Rangers while Jonathan Quick, signed in the offseason as New York’s backup goalie, had 18 saves in his first start for the team.

“Everyone worked, and then we had luck on our side as well,” Panarin said. “Good bounces, good goals.”

Justin Schultz scored for the Kraken, who have scored one goal or fewer in four of their five games this season. Philipp Grubauer had 23 saves.

The Rangers were coming off a 4-1 home loss against Nashville.

“We had a tough last game. We just had to bounce back and this was the best scenario for what could happen,” Chytil said. “It was a good game for us today.”

Schultz gave the Kraken a 1-0 lead with a one-timer from the left circle midway through the first period, his first goal of the season.

The Rangers tied it up less than four minutes later on Panarin’s first goal.

New York scored a pair in the second period to go up 3-1.

With about seven minutes left in the second, Grubauer wasn’t able to control a shot by Jacob Trouba as the puck got past him into the crease, where Kakko was able to knock it into the net. LaFreniere scored his second goal of the season with two minutes left in the period.

“We didn’t execute very well,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “We weren’t moving, and we didn’t have a lot of pace to our game. You saw that five on five, you saw that on our power play opportunities. The sharpness and crispness was not there.”

Panarin scored again 5 1/2 minutes into the third period, corralling a bouncing puck and firing it past Grubauer.

GOING DARK

The game was delayed briefly right after the start as a bank of lights was out. As the game started, the Rangers defensive zone was noticeably dimmer than the rest of the ice.

The game was halted after about a minute of play, and after a wait of about 10 minutes the game resumed without the lights coming back on. The teams switched sides at the midway point of each period due to the lighting issue.

Players on both teams downplayed the effect of the lighting issue, although Panarin joked that he sabotaged the lights. “For me, I want it darker so it’s harder for goalies. That’s why I scored two,” he said.

Game notes

Kraken F Andre Burakovsky left the game early in the second period after being pushed into the boards by Trouba. Burakovsky got up gingerly after the hit and did not return. Hakstol said he would wait until Sunday to determine Burakovsky’s status.

“I don’t think it’s going to be something that’s real short term,” Hakstol said.

This was the first game of a five-game road trip for the Rangers, their longest of the season. “Five games on the road is a long time,” Kakko said. “First win feels good.”

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Seattle Kraken: Full Highlights

SEATTLE -- — It took five games, but the Seattle Kraken finally broke out offensively using a familiar formula that led to their success a season ago.

Vince Dunn and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had a goal and two assists and the Kraken won for the first time this season, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 7-4 on Thursday night.

Yanni GourdeJaden Schwartz and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored in a three-goal first period for the Kraken. But after going winless in its first four games and earning only one point in the standings, Seattle rediscovered what led to 100 points last season — a lot of contributions

throughout the lineup.

Seattle's seven goals came from seven players and 13 picked up at least a point. The sluggish start was based around a lack of scoring as the Kraken managed just three goals through the first four games.

But they felt they were on the cusp of a breakout and it finally arrived.

“It's our depth. It's tough to play against that,” Seattle's Jared McCann said. “We have to use that to our advantage.”

McCann and Tye Kartye scored 21 seconds apart midway through the third after Carolina pulled to 4-3, and Bjorkstrand added an empty-netter with 3:09 left.

Tye Kartye’s third-period goal was the first regular-season goal of his NHL career. Congrats, Tye!

Gourde’s first of the season came at 7:16 as he redirected Andre Burakovsky’s shot. Schwartz scored his second of the season just six seconds into Seattle’s power play at 12:18, and Bellemare scored short-handed with 38 seconds left in the first period off the rebound from Dunn’s shot.

Dunn’s scored on the power play 2:38 into the second and Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour pulled starting goalie Antti Raanta after he gave up four goals on 18 shots.

“I think it’s evident our success comes from everyone doing their part and playing as a five-man unit out there,” Dunn said.

Pyotr Kochetkov, recalled Wednesday, made 14 saves after taking over for Raanta. The Hurricanes were without starting goalie Frederik Andersen after he left Tuesday’s win over San Jose in the first period after taking a shot off his mask.

Carolina scored four goals in the third period of that win over San Jose on Tuesday and the Hurricanes tried to post another third-period rally. Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored at 5:54 to pull the Hurricanes to 4-3 and Seth Jarvis’ second goal of the period on the power play at 15:54 pulled

Carolina to 6-4. But that's where the comeback ended.

“We always think there's a chance no matter what. We think we have a team that can score in bunches. Like I said before, it's a matter of keeping it out of our net right now,” Jarvis said.

Seattle goalie Joey Daccord was very good through two periods before running into trouble in the third. Daccord made 29 saves through the first two periods, the only goal coming when Jesper Fast scored for Carolina 19 seconds after Gourde’s goal. Daccord finished with 33 saves.

“The real key is he made good saves at the right time,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “He shows the confidence to overcome a goal going in the net. He moves on to the next one.”

Andre Burakovsky’s assist on Vince Dunn’s goal was the 200th assist of his NHL career. Congrats, Andre!

Avalanche @ Kraken 10/17 | NHL Highlights 2023

Brand new intro video for the #SEAKraken Home Opener

SEATTLE -- — All that was missing from the busy night for Colorado's Logan O'Connor's was an assist. He got the fight out the way almost immediately before adding what proved to be the deciding goal.

“I feel like he plays like that all the time. He's going to play as hard as he can, use his skating to his advantage,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “He's willing to do all the little things it takes to have success.”

O'Connor and Arttui Lehkonen scored their first goals of the season in the second period, Mikko Rantanen scored his third with 6:15 remaining and the Avalanche beat the Seattle Kraken 4-1 on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche ruined Seattle’s home opener and matched an NHL record for the longest regular-season road winning streak spanning multiple seasons. Colorado won its 14th straight away from home dating to last season, matching the mark set by Buffalo during the 2005-06 and 2006-

07 seasons.

Kailer Yamamoto tallies goal to put the Kraken on the board

Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev made 37 saves and turned away nearly every dangerous chance.

“They were probably the better team tonight but (Georgiev) was huge back there, penalty kill was big,” O'Connor said. “He's the best penalty killer out there.”

The first meeting since Game 7 of last season’s Western Conference first-round matchup won by Seattle got off to a heated start with O’Connor and Jordan Eberle dropping the gloves inside the first 90 seconds. It was just the third fight of Eberle’s career and first since 2019.

The fight was in response to Eberle's hit on Andrew Cogliano in Game 6 of the playoff matchup. Cogliano suffered a neck fracture as a result of the hit.

“We obviously go back to the series last year. It was a tough series, tough situation,” Eberle said. "I was just trying to get my teammates going.”

Colorado's Cale Makar was greeted with hearty boos every time he touched the puck, the result of his hit on Jared McCann in Game 4 of the playoff series that drew a one-game suspension and sidelined McCann for the rest of the series.

“There's definitely a lot of animosity, I think," O'Connor said. "We feel as though we didn't give our best effort in that series last year. They played us hard. You have got to give them credit.”

Lehkonen scored at 3:50 of the second period after the puck deflected his way and Seattle goalie Philipp Grubauer was caught out of position. O’Connor’s goal was short-handed at 11:50 when Makar’s clearance hopped over the stick of Vince Dunn at the blue line and sent O’Connor free

on a breakaway.

Artturi Lehkonen brings the Avalanche level vs. Kraken

Grubauer made 23 saves and kept it a one-goal margin with some key stops before Rantanen scored his third of the season.

Valeri Nichushkin scored an empty-net goal with 3:14 left. Nichushkin missed the final five postseason games of the first-round loss to Seattle for what the team called “personal reasons.”

Kailer Yamamoto scored at 15:09 of the first period to give Seattle the lead, his first goal as the first player from Washington state to play for the Kraken. But the rest of Seattle’s home opener was filled with missed opportunities and the Kraken remained winless through four games for

the first time in their three seasons.

Logan O'Connor fires home a fast-break goal

Seattle outshot and outhit the Avalanche but couldn't capitalize on the power play going 0 for 4 and is 1 for 11 on the season.

“We lacked execution in a few spots tonight and against a good team that leaves us on the wrong side of the ledger,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

Avalanche go up 3-1 on Mikko Rantanen's goal

Game notes

Makar picked up his 250th career point with the assist on O'Connor's goal. O'Connor's goal was the first short-handed score of the season for Colorado and the second allowed by Seattle. ... Seattle assistant coach Dave Lowry took a puck off the top of his head during the second period

and had to go back into the locker room for treatment. He returned to the bench in the third period. ... Seattle has killed 13 straight plays to begin the season.

“I think we played a really good road game tonight. It was a well played game,” he said. “We did a lot of things that we want to do on the road. We didn’t generate enough offense. It was a good night for Joey. He was rock solid. He was good. He made some good saves at the right time. ”

Seattle scored 40 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal by Schwartz, the former Blue who tipped Oliver Bjorkstrand's shot by Binnington for a 1-0 lead.

DUNNER!!!!! 1-0, US!

It was Schwartz's first goal in four games against his old team. The Kraken power play hadn’t scored on its previous six tries, including a five-minute major, this season.

Kyrou tied it 1-1 when he scored on a wrist shot from the slot after being fed by Thomas at 7:49 of the second.

“It was big shift by us there. We created a lot of momentum,” Kyrou said. “Me and Thomas just did a little give-and-go.”

Blues coach Craig Berube liked the way Kyrou and Thomas played.

“He tracked hard in the game, Jordan. He was skating tonight and Thomas was skating hard tonight,” Berube said. “They were good. It’s a defense to offense situation. We’ll keep preaching that and keep trying to tighten it up and play good defense. We’ve got to find a way to score a few more goals.”

A minor penalty by Vince Dunn gave St. Louis a power-play opportunity at 6:55 of the first period, but the team failed to score. The Blues had a power play chance later in the period, one late in the second period and one early in the third period.

The Kraken penalty kill hasn’t allowed a goal in 11 attempts this season.

A goal by Dunn at 13:36 was disallowed because of goaltender interference by Jared McCann. The officials ruled McCann’s stick hit Binnington in the mask.

Matty Beniers, Bjorkstrand and Jordan Eberle missed in the shootout for Seattle. Brayden Schenn and Kyrou missed for St. Louis.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- — Juuse Saros made 23 saves for his 21st NHL shutout and Nashville beat the Seattle Kraken 3-0 on Thursday night to give Andrew Brunette his first coaching victory with the Predators.

General manager Barry Trotz also got his first win in that position with Nashville. Trotz was the team’s first coach from 1998-2014 before stints with Washington and the New York Islanders. Brunette was an original Predator, scoring the franchise’s first goal in October 1998.

“Once you’re a player and having the Predator uniform, even though you’re not a player (anymore), you feel like you’re still a player and you still get the jitters and the excitement,” Brunette said. “To get a win, it makes it extra special.”

Colton SissonsGustav Nyquist and Juuso Parssinen scored.

Both teams opened the seasons Tuesday night with road losses, the Predators at Tampa Bay and the Kraken at defending Stanley Cup Champion Vegas.

“The puck isn’t going our way right now,” Kraken forward Yanni Gourde said.

Sissons opened the scoring just past the midway point of the second period.

With the Kraken on a power play, Cole Smith sent a backhand saucer pass from inside the Nashville blue line into the neutral zone, where Sissons won a race for the puck and went in on a breakaway. He went forehand to backhand to beat goaltender Philipp Grubauer.

“I just saw a pocket of ice and caught them being a little overaggressive,” Sissons said. “He put it in a great spot for me to have a chance at a breakaway and fortunately put it in.”

Nyquist scored his first goal as a Predator at 10:03 of the third off of a deflection in front of Grubauer on a delayed penalty to Seattle, and Parssinen completed the scoring with an empty-net goal.

Parssinen also scored in the opener.

Grubauer finished with 32 saves.

“(Grubauer) has been solid both nights here,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “He’s been sharp. He’s seeing the puck well.”

SOLO SKATE

When the Kraken skated out for the pregame warmup, rookie Tye Kartye took a lap on his own, as per NHL tradition for players appearing in their first game. Kartye did appear in 10 playoff games for the Kraken last season, scoring three goals and adding two assists.

IT BEGINS NOW

LAS VEGAS – Some nights in the National Hockey League are simply better to be quickly forgotten and forgiven by fans, even if Tuesday’s 4-1 loss at Vegas was the season opener and a nationally-televised divisional showdown. But Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol will review the tape and determine ways to improve

and make adjustments before his squad takes the ice in Nashville for Game 2 of the new season Thursday.

“There’s no way we’re going to let it go,” said Hakstol post-game. “We left something on the table today. I’m not disappointed with the overall effort. I think some individuals can have a better night. We’ve got to take some things out of this, improve on them and get right back at it in two nights.”

“It’s good to have live games, full games that you can go back as a group collectively see the way we want to play, find the good, find the negative and learn from it,” said alternate captain Jordan Eberle. “That’s how you become a better team.”

Important number there, Game 2. That means there are 81 games to reverse the sourness here in Vegas, where the 2023 Stanley Cup banner was raised to the rafters before the game amid noise and pomp and an extended 15-some minutes between warmups and puck drop. There will be better outcomes and

sweeter moments in the hockey months ahead.

are we feeling lucky?

On the Plus Side ...

Before reviewing some of the dread, let’s cover some positives: After going down 3-0 early in the second period, Seattle’s Yanni Gourde line and top defensive pair Adam Larsson and Vince Dunn circled up during the first TV timeout of the second frame appearing to vow to reverse the game momentum starting with a

strong shift. Veteran moves unfolded.

On the next shift, Matty Beniers jumped straight up off his skates to keep a popped-up puck in the Vegas zone. Jordan Eberle, who earlier in period was flattened netfront by young VGK winger Paul Cotter, was back in the hard area in and around the net finding a way to move the puck to linemate Jared McCann, who

muscled a quick-release shot past Adin Hill to score the Kraken’s first goal of the season. The second period ended 3-1 with the night not lights-out lost after 40 minutes.

Jared McCann with a Goal vs. Vegas Golden Knights

Another positive: The Kraken penalty killers posted a clean sheet, shutting down potent VGK power play units twice, one each in the first two periods of play. Meanwhile, after Vegas outchanced the visitors 8 to 4 in Grade-A scoring opportunities during the first period, Seattle rebounded with five high-dangers chances

compared to three for Vegas, per Natural Stat Trick.

Power Outage, Late-Game Missed Opportunity

Seattle managed four shots in six minutes of power play time in the first 40 minutes, not a ratio that will satisfy Dave Hakstol’s goal to do better than 21st in the NHL last season, an intention the Kraken coach has mentioned often when asked about power play work in the preseason. The Kraken did generate six shots

on a five-minute power play in the final  but VGK goalie Adin Hill made the saves when needed.

Ultimately, we didn't capitalize when we had the good opportunities, whether it be five on five or on the power play,” said Hakstol. “The positive is we generated some of those opportunities. The flip side of it is they generated chances as well. They're a good team in terms of transition and off the rush and we saw that

on their first goal. We made a mistake and that was their first opportunity.”

The Kraken power play got the chance to redeem matters with a five-minute major called on Vegas’ illegal hit to the head on Brandon Tanev, who also appeared to have a knee twisted as he fell to the ice. Jordan Eberle had a close-in chance early in the five minutes but Adin Hill shut it down and his shot blockers

stemmed all attempts. One PK standout for Vegas on the evening: Nicholas Roy, who was originally drafted by Ron Francis when he was GM in Carolina.

“The big one is the power play,” said Eberle when discussing how the game could have turned in the Kraken’s favor after early aggressive play from Seattle. “We’ve got to find a way to get a timely goal there, to find a way to get us back. We had lots of chances."

“The power play, especially early in the year, is such a huge thing. Last year we had it going early and it carried us. This group is more than capable, we have a lot of skill. This group we can find a way to do it.”

First Shot and First Period Woes

After the Kraken took the first five shots on goal in Tuesday’s season opener during the game’s first seven minutes, including a tantalizing open look for Andre Burakovsky stopped by Vegas goalie Adin Hill, the home squad’s second line worked a tic-tac-toe play to beat Philipp Grubauer. On literally a banner night for

Vegas, the crowd boomed yet again as captain Mark Stone worked the puck to linemate Brett Howden, who zipped a spot-on pass to center Chandler Stephenson’s stick blade and past a sprawling Grubauer while sliding right to left.

It needs to be quickly added that Grubauer proceeded to make several saves on threatening shots and scoring chances to keep his teammates in this 2023-24 opener and its two standings points still in reach. Prime example: Grubauer turned away a Grade-A scoring chance by the aforementioned Stephenson just

outside the crease at the 11-minute mark just after the Kraken had come up empty on a second early-game power play.

But with five minutes left and fourth-liner Brandon Tanev appearing to have intercepted a VGK centering pass in the Seattle end and primed to clear it, he bladed the puck back toward the end boards and last spring’s Vegas playoff MVP Jonathan Marchessault smartly and successfully poke-checked the puck to tip it

past an understandably unsuspecting Grubauer. Two-nothing bad guys and a lead not surrendered on the night.

To his credit, Grubauer maintained his trademark calm presence to make one more monster save among 10 VGK shots on goal in the first period. He smothered a point-blank netfront shot by Michael Amadio with two minutes in the opening frame.

Third-Period Troubling for Tanev

Not the best of outings for fan favorite Brandon Tanev. Beyond the own goal of sorts in the first period, Tanev suffered a flush-on head hit in which a knee also appeared to twist. Tanev immediately left the ice for the Kraken locker room. There was no immediate update on his condition. Check back on the Kraken app

and website for updates. Vegas forward Brett Howden was whistled for a five-minute major for an illegal hit to the head but the Kraken could not convert on the power play. Vegas center Jack Eichel sealed this matchup with a late goal.

Kraken coach Dave Hakstol dishes on major Shane Wright decision ahead of season opener vs. Golden Knights

Story by Tristin McKinstry

The Seattle Kraken open their season Tuesday night in Las Vegas. They will take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights as they raise their championship banner. However, Seattle will play this game without 2022 fourth-overall pick Shane Wright.

The Kraken sent Wright down to the American Hockey League, the team confirmed on Saturday. It’s a small surprise considering that the 19-year-old had a rather strong training camp. But, at the end of the day, Seattle felt this was necessary for Wright’s long-term development.

“We had a real clear, plain discussion in terms of the areas that we want to see him focus on and that the coaches and development staff will be focusing on with him in the American Hockey League,” coach Dave Hakstol said, via The Seattle Times.

Usually, teenagers like Wright are ineligible for the AHL. However, the Kraken received special permission to avoid sending him back to junior hockey. Yet, this is not Wright’s first time in the NHL’s top minor league. The Kraken utilized a loophole to allow the 19-year-old to play a few weeks for the Coachella Valley

Firebirds last season.

Wright played eight games in the NHL with Seattle last season. However, he struggled during those games. In fact, he scored just one goal while adding one assist during that span. He finished the season in the Ontario Hockey League. The 19-year-old scored 37 points in 20 games for the Windsor Spitfires following

a trade from the Kingston Frontenacs.

Overall, Seattle is more than happy with what they saw from Wright during camp. It all came down to his role. Would a small, limited role in the NHL be more beneficial for the former fourth-overall pick than a larger AHL role? The Kraken ultimately decided the AHL was the better route to go.

“It’s good we have the ability to get him to Coachella Valley. He’ll go down there and play significant minutes and we felt that was the best for his development, Kraken general manager Ron Francis said, via The Seattle Times.
