Going into Game 5, Dave Hakstol was clear to point out how narrow the margin for error is in a playoff game. "You don't have to be off by much…the difference between a win and a loss is a lot closer than you think," he said. And while the Kraken battled an even match against the Stars, it was early battles of inches

that ultimately cost them on the scoreboard and gave Dallas a 3-2 series lead.

"We had a solid start overall to the hockey game (and) to the first period but we found ourselves in a two-nothing hole," Dave Hakstol said. "You look at this team and overall through the difference of the hockey game, pretty close, pretty tight hockey game."

How it Started

The Kraken started Thursday's contest aggressively just as they wanted to. They controlled possession both in terms of number of shots and time in the offensive zone. But they weren't able to capitalize for the first goal and small plays led to two quick strike goals in 98 seconds.

Seattle had five shot attempts in the first four minutes of the game but a turnover in the neutral zone gave Dallas one of their rare early offensive opportunities and they didn't waste it. The Stars were moving the puck and Will Borgen smartly blocked a pass to the slot by Wyatt Johnston. Unfortunately, the puck

directed below the goal line to where Jamie Benn was in position. The Stars captain used one of the most dangerous passes in the game from below the goal line to feed Johnston in the slot. Borgen's stick was millimeters from blocking the shot and he made a valiant effort to block the shot coming from behind him,

but the rookie beat Grubauer glove side for the first goal of the game.

The Stars kept hold of that momentum scoring a response goal shortly thereafter. Hakstol wanted to see his forecheck assert itself more, but when they didn't recover a puck in the offensive zone, Dallas got off the rush behind the layers of Seattle's defense and were able to get a skater advantage. Thomas Harley

used a cross-slot pass to Roope Hintz to challenge Grubauer's lateral movement, and Hintz was able to convert for the 2-0 lead.

"Our determination (in Game 6) will have to be really good offensively," Hakstol said. "You can assume that they'll have the same type of stiff defensive effort that they had tonight."

Outside Looking In

While the Kraken dominated the majority of the first period in terms of offensive quantity, they couldn't solve Jake Oettinger. But there was a reason. Even with Seattle outshooting Dallas 14-5 and being in their offensive zone for 9:43, they weren't able to get pucks to the most dangerous areas of the ice. Everything

came from the outside of the zone with limited opportunity for second and third chances. That would improve in period two and provide results.

A Tale of Two Periods

Once again, a team that believed in itself when not many others did, found the confidence to push back. After the Stars built up a 2-0 lead in period one, they added a third goal early in the second when Joe Pavelski got his seventh of the postseason after gathering his own rebound. But the Kraken weren't willing to go quietly.

1:26 after the score became 3-0, Tye Kartye, who's been an important part of this post-season after taking Jared McCann's spot on the Matty Beniers line, entered the zone and dished the puck to Jordan Eberle. A master passer himself, Eberle employed that dangerous cross-slot pass to set up Adam Larsson for his

second goal in as many games. Kudos to Kartye for finishing the middle lane drive to tie up Thomas Harley net front and give Larsson space.

Larsson Goes Top Shelf

McCann above the right circle. In his second game back from injury, McCann found the back of the net with his elite shot (aided by a bounce off Joel Hanley who was tied up with Larsson).

McCann Finds Twine

R2, Gm5: Jared McCann takes a shot that finds its way through traffic for a goal that cuts the deficit to 3-2 in the 2nd period

With that goal, the Kraken became only the third team to have 18 unique goal scorers through 12 post-season games. The others were the Los Angeles Kings in 1989-90 and 1992-93.

The Hintz Keep Coming

Both teams played a conservative third period with just one shot on target a piece halfway through the final frame. Grubauer and Oettinger were coming up with key saves for their teams. But it was Dallas that would finally break through - even though it took a little bit to be confirmed. Hintz set up a possession for

his team and the Stars started the cycle allowing Hintz to get net front where he received a centering pass from Pavelski, deked, and tucked the puck under the crossbar for the home team's fourth goal. Play continued at first, but 35 seconds later officials stopped play, took a look, and confirmed the score.

Radek Faksa added a late empty net goal to finalize the score at 5-2.

"I liked the way that we fought back," Jordan Eberle said. "For the most part we fought back but we have to find a way to limit mistakes. I mean, obviously, you give them odd-man rushes you give them looks like that. . .they're a good team, they have a lot of offensive players that are going to score. So we have to

try and find a way to continue to play aggressive without giving them grade-A chances."

Now it's "do or die" in Game 6 as Eberle called it but the Kraken are optimistic about their chances.

"One thing with this team, we have never quit," Larsson said. "We probably never will."

By The Numbers
  • The Kraken generated more volume than the Stars (56.5% of all shot volume) but the Stars were effective at limiting quality as all those shots only accounted for 35.3-percent of all shot volume.

  • Seattle allowed five scoring chances against off the rush by Dallas and three odd-man rushes.

  • Both goaltenders gave up more goals than expected based on the offensive attack they faced. Grubauer allowed 1.5 goals against above while Oettinger allowed .65.

  • Dallas' Jason Robertson hasn't scored a goal in six straight games. This is the second-longest goalless streak of his 2022-23 season (regular and post-season).

  • Larsson, Kartye, and Vince Dunn led the way in getting shots from the slot (2) and Larsson had the most individual shot quality with .22 expected goals.

  • Hintz (4.54) and McCann (1.82) were the two respective leaders for their teams in terms of Game Score.

After seven seasons as a backup quarterback, Geno Smith didn't just become a starter in 2022, he also became a Pro-Bowler for the first time in his career.

Smith was one of four Seahawks named to the NFC roster for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games along with safety Quandre Diggs, kicker Jason Myers and rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen.

Diggs and Myers were named starters on the NFC squad, while Woolen becomes the first Seahawks defensive player to make the Pro Bowl as a rookie since linebacker Lofa Tatupu in 2005. This is the 12th straight year the Seahawks have had at least three Pro-Bowl selections.

In addition to those four, six other Seahawks were named Pro-Bowl alternates: linebacker Jordyn Books, special teamer Nick Bellore, outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, punter Michael Dickson, receiver Tyler Lockett and receiver DK Metcalf.

Seahawks Geno Smith receives high praise from Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes ahead of Chiefs matchup

12/21/2022

Story by Dan Fappiano

As Geno Smith and the Seahawks gear up to take on the Chiefs, Seattle’s quarterback garnished a lot of praise from Kansas City’s head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. While they will be enemies on the field in Week 16, it doesn’t mean Reid and Mahomes see Smith as an easy matchup.

At a Tuesday press conference, Reid and Mahomes spoke about Smith’s growth as a quarterback and what it will be like facing him. Both coach and QB showed admiration for Seattle’s lead man and were excited to face him on the field.

“I’ve always been a Geno fan,” Reid said. “I like his game. I like the kid. We brought him in here, smart kid. He’s had this career that’s been up and down, but he’s in a good place now. I know Pete (Carroll) is using him and he’s doing very well.”

“First off, every throw he throws is like a perfect spiral,” Mahomes said. “I know that gets taken for granted in this league. But, he throws a perfect spiral every throw. Geno’s done a great job of taking advantage of what’s there. And that’s why he’s had such a great season.”

Geno Smith has been having a career year for the Seahawks. He has completed 71.4% of his passes for 3,671 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He leads the league in completion percentage while his passing yards and touchdowns are both career highs.

Smith has Seattle on the cusp of the playoffs with a 7-7 record. They’ll have to defeat Kansas City, who have already clinched the AFC West, to improve their own postseason chances. For Reid and Smith, they’re ready for a battle.

NFL Pro Bowl snubs: Christian McCaffrey headlines 5 biggest misses from 2023 squad

Story by Kendall Capps

12/21/22

The National Football League announced the 2023 Pro Bowl rosters on Wednesday. Most of the players named were not a surprise, but every year there are at least a handful with legitimate gripes. This year was no exception and if anything, the Pro Bowl snubs were even more egregious in 2022 than most years.

Players like Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson were no-brainers and locks to make their respective teams. There were also a number of surprises.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was named to his fourth Pro Bowl team. But, if you look at his body of work this year, you would be left scratching your head. Howard has repeatedly been burned in man-to-man coverage, giving up a ton of big plays in the passing game. It appeared he was living off name

recognition alone, but he wasn’t alone.

Indianapolis Colts offensive guard Quentin Nelson also made it to the AFC Pro Bowl roster. He has now made it in all five of his seasons in the NFL, becoming the first player since Zack Martin to do so. But he, alongside his Colts teammates, have struggled mightily this year both in pass protection and win-block rate.

Nelson is good, but there were certainly more deserving players on the board.

5. Tyler Lockett – Seattle Seahawks WR

Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett is having a Pro Bowl type year. He has 78 catches for 964 yards and eight receiving touchdowns this year. He has helped Geno Smith and the Seattle offense get back to becoming one of the better units in the NFL.

He ranks among the league leaders in wide receiver advanced metrics, per FiveThirtyEight.

The four receivers in the NFC that made it ahead of him are Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, AJ Brown and Terry McLaurin. The first three on that list I am not crazy enough to argue against. But as good as McLaurin is, he has 10 fewer catches, five fewer touchdowns and ranks much lower in the metics. Lockett

deserved that spot.

Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts headline list of six Pro Bowl QBs

Story by R.P. Salao

12/21/22

The 2023 NFL Pro Bowl rosters have been announced and there’s no position more contentious than quarterback.

Announced as the six QBs making the cut are Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, and Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow for the AFC while Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, and Seattle Seahawks’ Geno Smith round out the NFC.

Names like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen on the Pro Bowl list were to be expected from the AFC side coming into the season, while nobody would’ve been surprised to see Joe Burrow make it after his amazing run to the Super Bowl just months prior.

The NFC proved to be much more interesting for its QB trio. Jalen Hurts being selected was a no-brainer pick with his Eagles flying high atop the NFL league standings. In similar vein, Kirk Cousins joins him with the Vikings cruising to a playoff berth this year. Most surprising of all is Geno Smith, who’s been one of the

compelling storylines of the season taking over since Russell Wilson’s exit.

No Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady from the the NFC side would’ve been surprising prior to the season, but completely understandable as their teams have struggled throughout the year. The AFC side had Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa leading the fan-vote but it wasn’t enough for him to make the final list. Baltimore

Ravens’ Lamar Jackson and Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert also couldn’t squeeze in after making the Pro Bowl list last season.

Packers Aaron Rodgers’ interception vs. Rams leaves Peyton, Eli Manning flabbergasted

12/19/2022

Peyton went on to explain Lazard’s route on the play and where Rodgers should’ve put the ball. However, he noted that Rodgers sailed the ball over his receiver’s heads and right into Rapp’s arms. Manning went on to joke that Rodgers, “hit the safety in stride.”

At halftime, Aaron Rodgers had completed 10-of-15 passes for 108 yards and the interception. The Packers’ touchdown came on an eight-yard run from AJ Dillon.

Rodgers’ tough first half continued the trend of the Packers QB’s down season. Heading into Green Bay’s matchup with the Rams, Rodgers had completed 64.3% of his passes for 2,864 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His now 10 interceptions are the most he has thrown since 2020.

However, Meyers’ toss to Jones was intercepted by Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones. The former Patriot got the ball right in front of Mac Jones and trucked the Patriots quarterback. After that, Jones had nothing but green in front of him, allowing him to run into the end zone with ease to win the game for the

Raiders, 30-24.

The Patriots held a 24-17 lead in the final minutes of the game. But Derek Carr led Las Vegas on a nine-play, 81-yard touchdown drive that tied the game with 32 seconds left. There was some controversy behind that touchdown grab though as Keelan Cole’s right foot looked like it might have landed out of bounds.

But a replay review upheld the call on the field.

The Cowboys fell to the Jaguars after Dak Prescott threw a game-ending pick-six. Immediately after the loss, head coach Mike McCarthy shared his thoughts on Prescott’s unfortunate turnover.

Dallas lost to Jacksonville 40-34 in overtime. McCarthy had a simple response in defeat, saying “Unlucky bounce for us. Great play by them.”

Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys started off the game hot, holding a 21-7 lead at halftime. However, with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Jacksonville would take a 31-27 lead. While Prescott found Noah Brown for a 13-yard touchdown pass, the Jags would hit a last-minute field goal to tie the game at 34

and send the game into overtime.

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors received some tremendous news on Friday after it was revealed that the four-time NBA champ’s injured shoulder does not require surgery. Going under the knife would mean that Steph will be forced to miss several months, but now that he’s avoided surgery, he should be

back on the court in a matter of weeks.

Curry spoke to the press after Friday morning’s shootaround and it is clear that the former back-to-back MVP was delighted with the developments. When asked if he felt relieved by the fact that no surgery is needed on his shoulder injury, the Warriors star responded affirmatively:

One hundred percent,” Curry said, via Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “That changed the whole dynamic of the conversation, both personally and as a team.

“There’s kind of two or three different outcomes, and then it was just a matter of making sure I didn’t need surgery and [that] my shoulder will be able to heal on its own, however long that took. Because I know the surgeries are four to six months [recovery time], and nobody wants to be dealing with that right now.”

Be that as it may, Curry himself still can’t say at this point when he will be able to return to the court:

“It’s hard to say, just because it’s the first time I’ve done it,” Curry said. “There’s a couple guys I’ve seen that had a little bit more severe cases, you know their timelines, you kind of do your guesswork.

“But just knowing this is the first time, you try to stay away from, me mentally, just trying to stay away from how long it’s going to be because [my shoulder] will let me know.”

Earlier reports indicated that Stephen Curry will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks’ time. By then, we should all get a clearer picture with regard to a potential target date for his return — something that appears too difficult to determine at this point in time.

The most important thing right now, however, is that Curry’s season is not over, which also means that the Warriors still have a fighting chance this year.

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman complained on Thursday that Time magazine's decision to name President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the Person of the Year was "Russophobic," per state media.

Speaking to reporters, Dmitry Peskov claimed the accolade was evidence of an anti-Russian Western media system.

"Time magazine employs its own criteria, which we can go on with or disagree, and it is their own editorial policy," according to TASS.

"However, in this case the magazine's editorial directives remain within the boundaries of the pan-European mainstream, which is totally short-sighted, anti-Russian and vehemently Russophobic," he continued, per the outlet.

Grading Aaron Judge’s 9-year, $360 million Yankees contract in free agency

 12/7/22

Story by Quinn Allen

After tons of speculation as to where he could end up, Aaron Judge ultimately committed to the New York Yankees for the long-term, signing a mammoth nine-year, $360 million extension on Wednesday. Judge had offers on the table from the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres and the latter actually offered

him more, but the slugger evidently loves the Big Apple and wanted to stay put.

With a no-trade clause in the deal, that means Judge will remain a Bronx Bomber until he’s nearly 40 years old. But after the year he just had en route to American League MVP, it’s no surprise the Yankees forked out the money to keep him. The question is, was it the right decision?

Here are grades for the Aaron Judge contract with New York.

A-

There is no doubt what Judge is capable of. The man just slugged 62 home runs in a single season, broke an AL record, and pretty much carried the Yankees all season long. A nine-year extension does seem like a lot, but it’s not like he’s going to start struggling anytime soon. Judge not only hit well over .300 in

2022, but he also had a WAR of 10.6. That’s frankly unheard of in the Majors. While he does turn 31 in April, Judge is a superb athlete who could very well play at a high level into his late 30s. He’s mobile in the outfield, runs fairly well, and of course, rakes.

For any team that commits to a player for this many years, there is always a little bit of risk to it. After all, you never know what can happen. However, the Yankees aren’t exactly going to hurt a lot if it doesn’t work out. They have the money. Plus, Judge is just on a career trajectory that screams success. The only

possible concern is how susceptible to injury he’s been at times. With that being said, he’s played at least 150 games in the last two years and flourished while doing so.

The Yankees had to pay Aaron Judge. He’s an absolute icon in the Bronx and the cornerstone of this franchise. Letting him walk because they were too cheap to give him the world would’ve been bad news and the backlash from fans and the media would’ve been well… very bad, too. He can play center field if needed,

play a dominant right, and just destroy any arm out there at the plate. Aaron Judge has already proven to be arguably the best hitter in baseball and will now be paid like it. He’s made it clear time and time again that he wants to be in pinstripes for the rest of his career. Leaving was never Judge’s first choice, but he

was willing to do so if the Yankees didn’t pay up.

Bronx Bombers supporters should be absolutely ecstatic that Aaron Judge is staying put. As previously mentioned, there’s always some risk with such a huge deal. But, if there was one player the Yankees were going to reward with a contract like this, it’s Aaron Judge. The production doesn’t look to be tailing off. It’s

just a matter of him staying healthy and helping this team win. Frankly, the Yankees would’ve been screwed if Judge left.

The only option was to keep him. A solid situation for both parties.

Latest update on Kenneth Walker will send fantasy owners scrambling for wild sleeper pick

12/6/22

Story by Rexwell Villas

The Seattle Seahawks’ backfield might be significantly thinner in Week 14 against the Carolina Panthers at home.  Running backs Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas both sat out Seattle’s Wednesday practice, which isn’t a good sign for their availability for this coming weekend’s contest.

Meanwhile, running back Travis Homer was able to practice, albeit in a limited fashion. Just appearing on the field was a good sign for Homer’s chances of suiting up versus the Panthers.

Seahawks RBs Ken Walker III and DeeJay Dallas didn’t practice today. Nor did S Ryan Neal. Pete Carroll said they’d all sit out today to rest their injuries from the Rams game, which have them uncertain for this week. RB Travis Homer was limited, a good sign for his availability.

Walker played in Week 13 against the Los Angeles Rams but sustained an ankle injury which ruled him out for the rest of the game. Dallas then took over for most of the running back chores against the Rams but he also suffered an ankle injury in the same contest. Homer was not available in the meeting with Los

Angeles, which the Seahawks still won, 27-24, because of an illness and a knee injury.

So far this season, the Seahawks are more of a passing team than a rushing one, but they still get ample help from their running backs, especially from the rookie Walker. Whoever gets the main running back role for the Carolina game for the Seahawks could have a field day burning rubber, as the Panthers are just

25th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game.

Seahawks 'Bunch of Gibberish'? Coach Pete Carroll Offers Playoff Plan

Pete Carroll is making sure that the Seahawks take it one game at a time as they prepare for a potential playoff push.

By

The Seattle Seahawks 27-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams pushed their record up to 7-5 and saw them move into the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoff picture.

Of course, there is still five games left in the season in which anything can happen, but if the season did end today the Seahawks would be a playoff team. For a team who entered this season set for a supposed rebuild, they are well ahead of schedule.

Pete Carroll, who believed this Seahawks team could shock some people during the offseason, still believes that they have what it takes to make a run in the playoffs.

“We’ve got to win some games. If we keep winning games, we’ll be OK," Carroll said. "We’ll have a shot at it. We have some of the elements that you need that we are fortunate to have; leadership, we’ve got quarterback play, we’ve got a style about us, we’ve got a kicking game."

However, while Carroll likes what he has seen from Seattle, he acknowledged that all that matters now is winning games to get into the playoffs in the first place.

"We’ve got a lot of things that are really positive about this team, but it doesn’t matter,'' he said. "It’s a bunch of gibberish unless we win some games. We have to try to win out, win one at a time, and see what happens.”

As the Seahawks prepare for their final five-game stretch, they kick it off with a matchup against the Carolina Panthers. If they can continue to win, taking it one game at a time, then they will be poised to make a deep run come the playoffs.
