SEATTLE – Linebacker Kyle Queiro watched an interception slip through his fingers at Seattle Dragons practice Thursday afternoon. His frustration was apparent as he yelled at himself to catch the ball, but he kept his focus and came up with a pick before the end of practice.

All of that intensity paid off in a big way today as Queiro iced the game with an interception of Vipers quarterback Taylor Cornelius in the final seconds to seal a 17-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Vipers at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.

A huge celebration ensued as Queiro was mobbed by his teammates.

“What a moment, having some of my best friends with me as well, it’s definitely a good feeling,” he said.

Coach Zorn recapping @FederalFrazier's touchdown is everything.

"I'm humbled by so many people coming out to watch us." Jim Zorn can't say enough about the 30,000 people that showed up to the @XFLDragons first home game.

Queiro’s play was part of a huge day for the entire Dragons defense, with cornerback Jeremy Clark and defensive end Marcell Frazier each adding interceptions of their own and Steven Johnson leading the team in total tackles for the second straight week, with 10.

Not to mention the four sacks the Dragons tallied as a team.

DRAGONS WIN "That will do it!" The interception that sealed the win for the @XFLDragons

It couldn’t have been an easy task for the Dragons to prepare for the Vipers not knowing whether they would see Cornelius, Aaron Murray or Quinton Flowers at quarterback. However, defensive coordinator Clayton Lopez was adamant that was not a concern.

“We prepare the same every week, week in and week out,” Lopez said. “Whoever they put back there at quarterback, on the offensive line, at wide receiver, at running back, it makes no difference to us, we’re still going to play.”

The Seattle fans did not disappoint either. A raucous crowd showed up to support the Dragons in their home opener, and the players felt their support. Wide receiver Keenan Reynolds took note, saying “this is amazing, they are the best fans in the world.”

The Dragons will enjoy that rowdy home field advantage for one more week as they remain at home against the Dallas Renegades next Saturday, Feb. 22.

“When we’re all on the same page, great things happen,” safety Godwin Igwebuike said, wrapping up a moment the Dragons’ defense won’t soon forget.

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Dragons (1-1) had some first-half jitters in their first home game in XFL history, but they came out on top in a frantic second half to topple the Tampa Bay Vipers (0-2) on Saturday, 17-9, at CenturyLink Field.

An XFL-record 29,172 in attendance were rewarded with a duel of big plays after the halftime break, with the Dragons coming through on two big scoring plays.

Dragons talk about first win

“I couldn’t be more excited for our players because most of all players have never experienced the support like that stadium can give them. They saw how the fans create the atmosphere and in that creation, they felt at home as well. Not out of place

at all. I hope we can improve, we have a lot to work on but they were resilient today.”

Dragons head coach Jim Zorn

"Quarterback is the hardest position to play. It’s not easy going out there. You just got to fight through it. I didn’t play good at all in the first half and I knew it, didn’t hit throws i usually make. That first big ball added a lot to my confidence."

DRAGONS

Reynolds broke loose in the second half, but the run game played a lower-key role in sustaining Dragons drives. After netting 97 ground yards in the opener, Seattle's backfield topped 100 with distribution once again, with Trey Williams and Kenneth

Farrow each contributing 45 yards.

Linebacker Steven Johnson racked up another busy week, collecting nine tackles after an eight-tackle Week 1; he'll likely rank among the leaders in that category by weekend's completion.

Vipers head for their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 22, against the Houston Roughnecks at 2 p.m. ET on ABC.

In the first game of the 2020 XFL season, the DC Defenders and Seattle Dragons put on an exciting showcase filled with big plays and some memorable moments, with DC picking up the first win in franchise history, 31-19.

Part of the excitement around Saturday's season-opener wasn't just football back in the district, but the opportunity for players to once again demonstrate their skills at the get a second chance at playing football.

On Saturday, plenty of players immediately made the most of the circumstances.

"Tough Loss today! But we will bounce back Quick n learn from our mistakes!!See y’all at Century Link next weekend!! Let’s pack the house!!"

"A few errors can really affect the game, and we have to overcome those." - Dragons head coach Jim Zorn

"It's definitely different. After you score a touchdown or make a big play, it's fun to go over and celebrate with your teammates. You're not really expecting to have cameras. It's definitely a new thing. But I think it's a good addition to this league. It makes it fun. It

brings everybody together too." - Dragons WR Austin Proehl on being interviewed immediately after a big play

PEAK PERFORMANCES

DRAGONS

WR Austin Proehl garnered 10 targets from Silvers, catching five for 88 yards and finding the end zone twice, including a 57-yard catch-and-run.

QB Brandon Silvers' day was marred by two interceptions (including one returned for a TD), but the 25-year-old showcased spurts of brilliance in his three-TD day.

DEFENDERS

Fueled by a second half in which he peppered the Dragons downfield, quarterback Cardale Jones directed a solid 291-yard, two-touchdown effort with a robust average of 11.2 yards per attempt. While bombs to Ross and Lee got most of the attention, experienced

former NFL wideout Eli Rogers also served as a safety valve, catching all six of their intended connections.

While he didn't get to taste the glory of his teammates Sylve, Campbell or Celestin, linebacker Jameer Thurman was all over the field, recording eight tackles (six solo) with a tackle for a loss and two passes defensed.

QUOTES FROM THE VICTORS

"It sounds cliche, but it wasn't today. We owe this victory to the fans. When we got close to "bend or break: situations, they kept us upright. They were loud from start to finish and gave us the energy we needed to finish the job and get the victory." - Defenders head coach Pep Hamilton

"Coming to the team late, and try to learn the playbook, honestly, I was a bit iffy on it. I knew that not starting had to do with still learning the playbook, so coming in, I didn't know how much time I was expected to get. But last-minute coach [Pep Hamilton] pulls

me aside and says 'you are a pro, I expect you to pick it up. Go out there and get it done. You're starting.' And the results speak for itself." - Defenders WR Rashad Ross on his Week 1 impact

Kasen Williams confident Dragons will have the best fans in the XFL

The fanbase has been known as one of the loudest and rowdiest in the NFL, making CenturyLink Field a dreaded place to play for opponents.

Even though the Seahawks season is over, the 12’s still have plenty of opportunities to bring the noise to CenturyLink this Spring with the inaugural XFL season coming up.

The first home game for the Seattle Dragons is February 15, and former Seahawks receiver Kasen Williams knows the crowd is going to bring it, just like they always do.

“We’re gonna have the fans,” Williams said after Friday’s practice. “They’re gonna show out. We’re probably gonna have the best fanbase in the whole XFL. I told them get ready. It’s not gonna feel like an XFL game, when we go play away and we come back home

it’s going to be a completely different vibe.”

Williams is one of six former Seahawks who is now suiting up for the Dragons, a list that includes receiver Keenan Reynolds, quarterback B.J. Daniels and tackle Isaiah Battle.

Williams also played his college ball at the University of Washington, and could not be happier to continue his playing career in Seattle.

“Gratitude (is) through the roof,” Williams said. “I’m just extremely grateful to be here. I could have been playing anywhere. The fact that I’m here and the story gets to continue to be told in Seattle, it’s dope.”

Williams played for the Seahawks in 2015 and 2016, appearing in three games, before starring in the 2017 preseason and still, to the surprise of many, getting cut on September 1. He ended up with the Browns, hauling in nine catches in his most recent NFL action.

Now, Williams hopes to resurrect his career in the XFL, with the stated goal of making his way back into the league.

But first, he wants to help establish the Dragons as the team to beat in the eight-team XFL, something he believes is very doable after seeing the other teams in camp.

“I feel confident in our team,” Williams said. “I think we’re gonna have a good squad, I really do. The way we stack up to our opponents, I think we’re gonna have the opportunity to really make a splash in this league for it being the first year. We can really be one of

the teams that gives the XFL a good rap.”

The Dragons will begin their season on Saturday, February 8 in Washington, DC against the Defenders at 2:00 p.m. PT.

Their home opener will be a week later against the Tampa Bay Vipers, also at 2:00 p.m. PT.

Seattle Dragons go public, with several hundred at open practice at Memorial Stadium

The Seattle Dragons were unveiled to the public for the first time Saturday morning with an open practice at Memorial Stadium, and several hundred showed up to see the new XFL team that will begin playing in February.

“Your support means a lot and I wouldn’t doubt that Seattle is the kind of city that would watch us only playing against each other,” Dragons coach Jim Zorn told the fans.

It was against each other and without pads as the team continues offseason training activities that began Dec. 5 and will conclude with a four-day minicamp next week.

Also on hand was commissioner Oliver Luck, who said the rule book should be unveiled later in the month, but talked about some of the changes from the rules in the NFL, such as a 25-second play clock instead of 40 seconds.

“There is less idle time,” Luck said. “We want to see players play and not stand around in the huddle. My mandate from (XFL owner) Vince McMahon was to create a fast-paced, up-tempo kind of a game. … The innovations are all around playing fast and playing good, crisp football and getting it all done in three hours.”

Luck said there are about a dozen innovations, including giving teams a chance to go for three points after a touchdown by running a play from the 10-yard line. Two-point tries would come from the 5-yard line. Overtimes would be decided by a two-point shootout.

The Dragons will take a break after next week’s minicamp, then will head to Houston with the rest of the eight-team league in January for training camp. The 71-man roster will be pared to 52 for the team’s opening game Feb. 8 at the D.C. Guardians.

It seems clear that the battle to be the Dragons starting quarterback will continue into January. Brandon Silvers and former Seahawk B.J. Daniels took part in Saturday’s practice. Chase Litton, who has missed the team’s practices because of a family health issue, will also be in the mix in January.

“Those two guys have taken all the reps and they’ve been great and they’re learning our offense and are learning our vocabulary,” Zorn said of Silvers and Daniels, who have yet to throw an interception in practice.

Dragons president Ryan Gustafson said the fan turnout at practice was indicative of the support the team is getting. He said ticket sales are going well, but was not allowed to give specific numbers as the league wants to announce tickets sales for all teams at a later date.

“We are really excited about the fans’ support so far,” Gustafson said. “It’s obvious that Seattle is rallying behind this team and it’s growing day by day.”

Said Luck: “We expect Seattle to be one of our most successful markets.”
