USC Basketball: Watch Bronny James Record Career High In This Stat Vs Ducks
Story by Ricardo Sandoval
Your USC Trojans have dropped their last six games and remain in last place in the Pac-12 standings. Things look bleak for the Trojans, and it wasn't any different in their latest contest against the Oregon Ducks at the Galen Center.
It was another disappointing outing, but the lone bright spot in the loss was freshman star guard Bronny James. James was out there looking like his father as he dished out a career-high seven assists in the loss.
James's seven assists were not only a career-high but a game-high.
Outside of the seven assists, James also chimed in with six points, four rebounds, and shot 2-for-5 from the field in 22 minutes. The 22 minutes was an increase from the 15 minutes he played in their 65-50 home loss against UCLA.
For the season, James has averaged 2.4 assists per game, along with 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. He's shown flashes of his potential. Hopefully, the game against the Ducks could help propel him into an integral part of the team and, more importantly, lead the team to victory.
Here are all the seven assists.

Stephen Curry scores 29 points, Warriors overcome slow start to beat the Nets 109-98

Golden State Warriors vs Brooklyn Nets - Full Game Highlights | February 5, 2024 | 2023-24 Season
NEW YORK -- — Stephen Curry looked at a box score that showed no Warriors but him made a 3-pointer.
It certainly wasn't a pretty win, but in what's been a difficult season, Golden State will take them whatever way they come.
Curry scored 29 points, Jonathan Kuminga added 28 and the Warriors shook off a poor start to beat the Brooklyn Nets 109-98 on Monday night.
The Warriors were coming off an overtime loss Saturday in Atlanta despite 60 points and 10 3-pointers from Curry, and looked as if they hadn’t regained their energy when this game started. Golden State was just 2 for 11 on 3-pointers and committed 10 turnovers that led to 15 points
while being held to 43 points in the first half.
Curry requests new ball after Royce O'Neale's 3-point attempt gets stuck
But they outscored the Nets 66-49 in the second half, even while going just 4 for 22 from behind the arc in the game — with all the makes by Curry.
“It was ugly on both sides but I think everybody was trying to execute and trying to settle into the style of the game, and then thankfully in the second half we made the right adjustments and took control and never looked back,” Curry said.
Golden State hadn't won a game when shooting under 19% from 3-point range since beating Boston 108-88 despite going 5 for 28 (17.9%) on March 15, 2014, the season before winning its first of four titles in eight years.
Kuminga added 10 rebounds while reaching 20 points for the ninth time in his last 10 games. Draymond Green finished with eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Warriors outrebounded the Nets 60-38 and had a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Cam Thomas scored 18 points, but shot 4 for 21 for the Nets, who had won three of four. Thomas scored 41 points in a loss in San Francisco in December, the most allowed by the Warriors this season.
Nic Claxton added 15 points and a career-high seven blocked shots before being ejected in the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul against Brandin Podziemski, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Nets scored 147 points against Utah on Jan. 29 and 136 in Philadelphia on Saturday. But they were nowhere close to that level Monday, shooting 38% and getting poor nights from leading scorer Mikal Bridges (5 for 15) and Spencer Dinwiddie (3 for 12).
“But we had our chances tonight. If we took care of the rebound piece, which we’ll continue to challenge our guys with —- that’s been a little slippage overall,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said. “If there’s one area we’ve kind of slid in, it’s definitely the rebounding piece and we need
multiple bodies to participate.”
The Nets played without Ben Simmons, who sat out the front of a back-to-back but is scheduled to play Tuesday when the Nets host Dallas in Kyrie Irving's return to Brooklyn.
Cameron Johnson Gets Up for the Beautiful Slam
The Nets were 3 for 16 from 3-point range in the first quarter, yet led 23-20 thanks largely to 12 points off seven Warriors turnovers. Golden State didn't reach 30 points until more than halfway through the second quarter and didn't get a 3-pointer until Curry made one with 4:29
remaining in the half, the 3,600th of his career.
Brooklyn led 49-43 at halftime, but Kuminga had dunks on Golden State's first two possessions of the third quarter and that seemed to loosen up the Warriors, who outscored the Nets 32-21 to take a 75-70 lead to the fourth.
“Against that kind of switching defense, if you’re kind of jogging through stuff it’s really easy to just switch and say in front,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “So I thought the first five minutes of the second half really set a good tone. Our guys were much sharper and harder with the cuts.”
Brooklyn cut it to four with 3:06 left, but Kuminga scored the next four points and Curry then scored Golden State's next five to make it 105-94.

Jokic and Murray lead Denver's comeback as Nuggets beat Blazers 112-103 for weekend sweep of rivals
Nikola Jokic scores 29 points with eight rebounds and seven assists in the Nuggets' win over the Trail Blazers.
Good Night to the Best Fans in the Association!
TRAIL BLAZERS at NUGGETS | FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS | February 4, 2024
DENVER -- — Jamal Murray loves that the Denver Nuggets can turn to their championship mettle in crunch time. He hates that they have to rely on that so often.
“I think we should just be a little bit more on point to start the game, not to have to kick it into another gear,” Murray said after the Denver Nuggets rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat the short-handed but spirited Portland Trail Blazers 112-103 on Sunday night.
Aaron Gordon can’t stop dunking 🏀🏀
The reigning NBA titleholders trailed by 14 in the first half and didn't take their first lead until their final shot of the third quarter.
“I think we just got to be a little more conscious, a little more aware of the task at hand each and every night that we’re gonna get their best shot,” Murray said. “I think we can give our best shot, as well, from the start.”
Nikola Jokic led Denver with 29 points, Murray added 21 points on a 10-to-1 assist-to-turnover night and youngsters Christian Braun and Peyton Watson provided the juice down the stretch for the Nuggets to get their second win over their division rivals in 48 hours.

Nikola Jokic Completely Fakes out Deandre Ayton for an and-1
Four other players scored in double figures, including Watson, a rookie who scored 10 of his 12 points in the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter blitz that improved Denver's home record to 21-4.
The Nuggets didn't trail by more than a bucket in their 120-108 win over Portland on Friday night, also at Ball Arena, but they didn't lead this one until the final seconds of the third quarter when Jokic's finger-roll layup broke an 84-84 tie.
Deandre Ayton Floats in and-1 for the Trail Blazers
The Blazers, who got got 27 points from Deandre Ayton and 26 from Anfernee Simons, quieted the sellout crowd most of the night. They were leading 84-75 with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter when Matisse Thybulle missed his second of two free throws.
The next time they scored came on Kris Murray's goaltended bucket with 10:44 remaining to cut Denver's lead to 91-86. During that stretch, the Blazers missed nine shots, including six from long range, and turned the ball over three times while the Nuggets were using that 16-0 run to pull away.
Jamal Murray Drops in Pull-Up 3-Pointer for the Nuggets
“Our defense got better as the game went along,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “We had zero defense. We had a little bit of defense. We got a lot more defense. And we had great defense.”
The Blazers certainly weren't hanging their heads after faltering late.
“I thought we played well for the majority of the game, all the game, to be honest with you," Simons said. “They’re a good team. They made runs. They’re a championship team. They’re a veteran team. We rolled out with a lot of young guys and sometimes that’s just what happens.
"So, I’m just glad that we stuck with it and continued to play hard. Overall, I’m pretty happy about how we played today.”
The Blazers had just one 3-pointer in 13 tries in the second half after knocking down 10 before halftime.
Christian Braun Impresses with Nice Basket
Murray and Thybulle got starting nods with Jerami Grant missing his second straight game with lower back tightness and Malcolm Brogdon still sidelined with a sore knee.
Reserve Scott Henderson, who turned 20 on Saturday, one day after scoring 30 points against the Nuggets, finished with 14 in the rematch. Over the weekend, Portland coach Chauncey Billups texted him a sort of congratulations.
“I said, ‘Scoot, there aren’t many guys in the entire world that can say they scored 30 points on the world champions as a teenager," Billups recounted. “But you're not a teenager anymore. Let's see what you're going to do in your 20s.”

ATLANTA -- — Another loss for Golden State drained the joy out of Stephen Curry's second career 60-point game.
Curry scored a season-high 60 points in the Warriors' 141-134 overtime loss to Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.
“It sucks to not have something to show for it,” Curry said after the Warriors fell four games under .500 at 21-25. Golden State is 12th in the Western Conference.
“It's frustrating, obviously, not coming away with the win knowing a couple plays here, a couple plays there could have been a different outcome," Curry added. "It just adds to our frustrating season.”

Curry had eight points in overtime to finish only two points shy of his career high of 62 at home against Portland on Jan. 3, 2021. He was 22 of 38 shots from the field, hitting 10 of 23 3-pointers, and made all six of his free throws.
“It just seems he continues to get better, which is special at his age,” Golden State's Draymond Green said about the 35-year-old Curry.
Coach Steve Kerr described Curry's game as “incredible.”
“We competed like crazy but just couldn't get over the hump,” Kerr said.
Hawks Outlast Warriors in OT Despite Huge Game from Steph
Young led the Hawks with 35 points. Dejounte Murray scored the last seven points in an 11-0 run to open the overtime for Atlanta and finished with 19 points. Onyeka Okongwu had a career-high 22 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, and Jalen Johnson scored 21 points.
Curry scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead jumper with 14 seconds remaining. Murray answered with a jumper from the free-throw line to tie it. Curry missed a last-second jumper to send it to overtime.
The Hawks have taken advantage of a six-game homestand to win four straight games, matching their best stretch of the season. They are 4-1 on the homestand.
Young and Curry embraced on the court after the game. Young often says he looks up to Curry and enjoys the opportunities to play against one of his favorite players.
Jalen Johnson Drains Basket vs. Golden State Warriors
“They're a lot more fun when you win,” Young said. “You always want to battle, you always want to compete, you want to show your best off against the best. ... Steph was obviously going in that second half.”
Young, averaging 27.3 points, is second in the NBA with 11 assists per game but did not make the All-Star team.
“I told him after the game it will all come back to him if he continues to approach the game in the right way,” Curry said about Young.
The Warriors were short-handed, especially after the first half.
Jonothan Kuminga what are you Doing
Forward Dario Saric (illness) missed his second consecutive game. Forward Andrew Wiggins suffered what Kerr said was a left foot injury late in the first half and Jonathan Kuminga fouled out with 1:06 remaining in regulation. X-rays on Wiggins' foot were negative.
Kerr said Saric could join the team for its next game at Brooklyn.

It was tied at 89 entering the fourth period. Curry scored Golden State's first two baskets of the final period and then gave the Warriors a 105-104 lead with a 3-pointer.
Kuminga scored 16 points, ending his streak of eight straight games with more than 20.
Young and Golden State's Lester Quinones, who scored 17 points, traded long 3s to end the first quarter. Young sank a 27-footer with less than 2 seconds remaining in the period. The Warriors quickly passed the ball to Quinones, who launched a halfcourt shot to beat the buzzer.
Golden State rookie guard Brandin Podziemski appeared to injure his right leg when he landed awkwardly when trying to avoid fouling Young late in the first period. Podziemski limped off the court, was escorted to the locker room and returned in the second period.
Hawks forward Saddiq Bey, who sprained his left ankle in the first half Friday night's 129-120 win over Phoenix and did not play in the second half, was ruled out before the game. Coach Quin Snyder before the game “It's not something that should keep him our for an extended period of time.”

WARRIORS at GRIZZLIES | FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS | February 2, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- — Jonathan Kuminga scored 29 points and the Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 121-101 on Friday night.
Stephen Curry had 20 points, six assists and six rebounds, and Klay Thompson added 14 points for the Warriors, who won their second straight. Kuminga was 11 for 15 from the field, with a 3-pointer, and surpassed 20 points for the eighth straight game.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Kuminga has “just really figured it out” in recent games, a product of his work and his game growing.
“The game has slowed down for him,” Kerr said of the forward. “He's understanding when to attack, how to attack. ... He's just so powerful and explosive going to the rim.”

“It was more just trying to eliminate their fastbreak,” Kuminga said of the Warriors outscoring Memphis 36-28 in the fourth, including a 12-3 run in the closing two minutes. “We just had to slow them down and stay locked in at the end of the game.”
Neither team had played particularly well lately. The Warriors had lost four of six entering the game, including a 119-107 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.
Memphis, which has dealt with injuries to key players all season, came in on a skid. While the Grizzlies' three losses were by single digits, they have had trouble closing games. And they couldn't overcome the Warriors fourth-quarter advantage.
“Obviously, got away from us there in that fourth quarter in a tight battle,” Jenkins said.

BOSTON -- — LeBron James has been pleading for weeks for the Lakers' supporting cast to provide him and fellow All-Star Anthony Davis some help as they fight to keep pace in a tight Western Conference playoff race.
With the two franchise cornerstones watching from the bench, they finally got their wish.
Austin Reaves scored a season-high 32 points and hit a career-high seven 3-pointers to help a Los Angeles team missing its biggest stars stun the Boston Celtics 114-105 on Thursday night.
“We're all talented players. And this was an opportunity to show the world what you can do,” Reaves said. “Before the game we come to together and was like, 'Look, the least we can do is we can do is go out there and play as hard as we can and live with the results.”
The result was perhaps the Lakers' best victory of the season.
Bron and AD Love Rui's 3 for the Lakers
The anticipated nationally televised meeting between the longtime rivals was tempered when James was ruled out because of a left ankle injury and Davis by an Achilles tendon issue and left hip spasms.
That sentiment that the game would be a mismatch didn't affect the remainder of the Lakers' young roster.
D'Angelo Russell Knocks Down 3 for the Lakers
What a team win
Reaves was 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. He also was fouled on one of the misses and made all three free throws. The Lakers hit 19 of 36 3-pointers, holding off the NBA-leading Celtics to end a two-game losing streak.
D’Angelo Russell added 16 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds for the Lakers. Jaxson Hayes had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Jayson Tatum scored 23 points for the Celtics, who had 15 turnovers. Boston has lost three of its last five at home since starting the season 20-0 in TD Garden.
“It just happens. Stretches of bad basketball happen,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. “We can't sit here and act like we're too entitled for it to happen to us. It happens. And it's a matter of how we respond to it and how we work through it.”
Boston never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter.
Lakers big man Jarred Vanderbilt had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 16 minutes. But he limped off the floor in the final minute of the first half as he tried to turn up court following a strip of Tatum. He sat out the rest of the game with what the team said was right foot
soreness.

The Celtics came alive with a 12-2 run in the third quarter that included four straight 3s to cut it to 77-71. Tatum brought the crowd to its feet during the surge after he dove onto the floor to tie up Rui Hachimura to force a jump ball.
Thursday marked the first time this season both James and Davis have sat out the same game for Los Angeles, The Lakers began the day in ninth place in the West standings.
Ham said before the game that the injuries are things both players have dealt with throughout the season. It is unclear how long either will be sidelined. James has played 44 of of 49 games this season. Davis has appeared in 46 games.
Reaves said there’s no secret what they need to do when James and Davis return.
“If you remember Bron's quote the other night — ‘Go out and do your job.’ And I feel like that's just what we did tonight,” Reaves said. “It wasn't nothing special. It wasn't like we was out there running a million set plays. We went out there and competed our (butts) off. We gave it 110%
on the defensive end. We competed. We didn't foul much. Just bringing those two back, we need to continue to do the same thing.”

The Nets Welcome KD back to Brooklyn with a Tribute Video 🎥 | NBA on ESPN
NEW YORK -- — Kevin Durant was cheered before the game, then booed when it started.
His return to Brooklyn was on track be a noisy one, until he and the Phoenix Suns took the crowd out of the game with some relentless offense.
“I love to shut the crowd up. Even though I love these people here, I love to shut them up," Durant said after scoring 33 points to lead the Suns to a 136-120 victory Wednesday night.
Kevin Durant gets Booed by the Fans in Brooklyn 💀💀
Durant added eight assists in his first game in Brooklyn since being traded to Phoenix nearly a year ago. He got a mixed reception early before leaving Nets fans little to cheer with 11 points in the third quarter, when the Suns outscored the Nets 42-26 after leading by three at halftime.
“He put the team first, went out and competed, played team-first basketball, had eight assists and several other plays where made the extra pass and allowed his teammates to play through his double-teams and played a team-first type of game and ended up with 33 and eight,” Suns
coach Frank Vogel said. “Hell of a performance.”
KD HUGE DUNK
KD Euros in the Lane for a Dunk
Durant’s return earned the game a national-TV slot but it wasn’t much of a contest in the second half. The Suns, with Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, are trying to build a title contender, while the Nets — who not long ago had their own Big 3 with Durant, Kyrie Irving and James
Harden — are 19-28 and outside playoff position.
Kevin Durant Disrespects Cam Thomas and Calls him "Mini" after Scoring on him 😂
Jusuf Nurkic added 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns, overwhelming an undersized Nets team as the Suns won for the ninth time in 11 games. They improved to 3-2 on a trip that has stops remaining in Atlanta and Washington, Beal's former home.
“It’s tough. With a team like that you know they’re going to shoot well, just those three guys at a high level, so we had to pick our battles tonight,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said.
Booker finished with 22 points and Eric Gordon had 17. The Suns shot 62% from the field and 50% from 3-point range.
Mikal Bridges Cans the Transition 3
Cam Thomas scored 25 points for the Nets, who had won two straight games. Mikal Bridges, who came to the Nets in the Durant trade, had 21 and Lonnie Walker IV added 19.
Devin Booker Taunts Mikal Bridges with his Celebration in his Face after Dagger 3 😂
The Nets played a tribute video for Durant — who had wrote on social media that he didn't want one — before he was announced first among the Suns starters. He received cheers then, though was booed when he touched the ball in the early minutes.
“That wasn’t going to stop me from just doing my job, regardless of how I was honored,” Durant said of the video, calling the Nets a classy organization for the way they treat former players.
The swing of emotions was fitting, as Durant had said earlier this week that fans didn't know how to feel about him. He brought hope of a first NBA championship to the Nets when he and Irving signed together in 2019, but left without ever getting close. Brooklyn won just one playoff
series during that time in 2021, but Durant was disappointed with the way the Nets played while he was hurt the following season and asked for a trade in the summer of 2022.
The Nets held onto him then, but moved him to Phoenix before last year's trade deadline after Durant renewed his request after Irving had been moved to Dallas.
KD Flies Down the Lane for a Huge Dunk
KD
KEVIN DURANT. THROW DOWN.
The Nets were without Ben Simmons, who was sidelined with a bruised left knee just one game after returning from a 38-game absence with a pinched nerve in his lower back. Simmons came down awkwardly after blocking a shot in the fourth quarter Monday and Vaughn said the No. 1
pick in the 2016 draft's knee was swollen, though an MRI exam showed no structural damage.
The Suns broke it open in the third quarter with a 10-0 run that pushed an eight-point lead to 99-81. Durant had the first five points, and after Nurkic dunked, Durant scored while being fouled by Thomas, who is listed as 7 inches shorter. Durant stared for a few moments across the
baseline toward the crowd, then held his fingers close together to indicate that Thomas was too small.
The entire Nets team was too small. With Dorian Finney-Smith and Day'Ron Sharpe also sidelined, there was no ability to match up inside and Phoenix outrebounded Brooklyn 42-27.
Phoenix played without starting forward Grayson Allen, who sprained his right ankle Monday in a victory in Miami.

Curry scored 37 points with eight 3-pointers, Kuminga added 26 points, and the Warriors beat the Philadelphia 76ers 119-107 on Tuesday night as guard Klay Thompson sat out with an illness.
“It's fun,” Green said, “I think it's starting to come together for us now. We've just got to string some wins together.”
Curry, who also had eight rebounds and seven assists, shot 12 for 17 in his third straight 30-point game. It was his third consecutive game with six or more 3s and his sixth in a row with at least 25 points.
He hit two straight 3s midway through the third as Golden State went ahead 69-57 and finished with 15 points in the period.

Wiggins added 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. Coach Steve Kerr credits Green for lifting up Kuminga and Wiggins — “telling us to keep going, no matter what,” Kuminga said.
“Draymond really changed things with his return because he connects those guys at both ends of the floor, just with his communication defensively and the way he helps get us organized offensively,” Kerr said. “Great to see Wiggs and JK both playing so well and playing well together. It’s
fun, you can see the team we’re shifting a little bit with how we’re playing and who we’re playing.”
Tobias Harris had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Joel Embiid scored 14 points for the Sixers before limping to the locker room with 4:04 left to a standing ovation after Kuminga fell on his left leg. Coach Nick Nurse said the center would have an MRI exam Wednesday.

Sixers Superstar Joel Embiid Ruled a Game-Time Decision vs. Warriors Amid Knee Issues
It was an important win for the Warriors to end their homestand following two straight one-point losses against 2023 playoff opponents — 145-144 to the Lakers in double overtime on Saturday night after a 134-133 loss to Sacramento on Thursday.
The 76ers dropped their fourth straight following a six-game winning streak. They hoped to have Tyrese Maxey return for the second night of a back-to-back but he sat out his third straight game with a sprained left ankle.
Wiggins made his first five shots and scored in double figures for the sixth time in seven games as Golden State won for just the third time in nine games. Kuminga extended his career-best streak of games with 20 or more points to seven. He has reached double figures in 24
consecutive games, also his most.

Brandin Podziemski replaced Thompson — the Warriors' 16th different starting lineup this season — and scored 11 on the day he was named to the All-Star Weekend Rising Stars roster. He drew his 20th charge, second-most in the league.
Dario Saric dished out seven of Golden State's 32 assists and Draymond Green had six to go with nine points and six rebounds.
Warriors guard Moses Moody is likely to return from injury during the upcoming road trip. He has been cleared to practice after straining his left calf Jan. 10. Chris Paul can begin light on-court individual workouts wearing a splint on his surgically repaired left hand that he injured Jan. 5.
The Warriors said he would be re-evaluated again in two weeks.

HOUSTON -- — Jalen Green scored 34 points and Alperen Sengun added 31 to help the Houston Rockets to a 135-119 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.
Houston led by as many as 30 points in the second half before the Lakers used a 20-5 run to get within 10 with four minutes left.
The Rockets scored the next six points, with three from Green, to make it 127-111 with about three minutes left and the Lakers removed their starters.
Green, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft, is working to be a more all-around player in his first season under coach Ime Udoka.

Cam Whitmore had 20 points off the bench for Houston, and Jabari Smith Jr. had 18 points and nine rebounds in his return after missing four games with a sprained left ankle. Green and Sengun also had 12 rebounds and seven assists each to help the Rockets to the victory.
The Rockets were up by 25 points after a basket by Sengun with about nine minutes left when the Lakers used a 12-3 run to get within 119-103 midway through the quarter.
Soon after that, James was knocked to the court after being hit in the face by Brooks as the two fought for a rebound. James remained face down on the court for a couple of minutes while team officials attended to him before getting up and walking off the court.
The play was reviewed and determined to be a flagrant 1 foul, and James remained in the game.

“We just didn’t get back,” he said. “We didn’t have a sense of care factor. We didn’t have no care factor in those last two minutes.”
The Lakers' Jarred Vanderbilt was ejected in the second quarter after getting two technical fouls during an exchange with Brooks.
Vanderbilt got his first technical foul after pushing Brooks below the neck after a basket by the Lakers with about 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Brooks was walking away from Vanderbilt and had his back to him when Vanderbilt tapped him on the back of the head, drawing
another technical and an immediate ejection.
Vanderbilt appeared to be upset after Brooks pushed him while he was in the air on a dunk about a minute earlier. He landed awkwardly after making that shot and fell to the ground.

“You take a hard foul, it’s part of basketball,” Davis said. “But you’re just not going to blatantly push someone in their back when they have no control of their body in the air. I think he should have got ejected for that. And then … obviously you know that him and Bron have their

And at the very end, James made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to cap his triple-double of 36 points, career-high 20 rebounds and 12 assists, outdueling Curry as the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Golden State Warriors 145-144 on Saturday night.
“It’s something I’ll be able to talk about with my grandkids, talk about me being able to compete with one of the greatest players to ever play the game,” James said. “So hopefully I can be cool with my grandkids at that point, for sure.”
Curry danced through the paint for a layup that sent the game to overtime. He knocked down a 3-pointer high over Anthony Davis in the second overtime for a lead.
James scored the first points of a second extra session and found D'Angelo Russell the next time down for a 3.
“Every year we get to do this, the back-and-forth battles, all the Finals runs, to the playoffs last year, after the horn sounded tonight there was a little laugh of we can't like imagine a scenario where a game like tonight happens, his year, what, 21, and my year 15,” Curry said. “All the

Curry hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in the second OT and sunk the one over Davis with 1:22 to go on the way to 46 points with a season-high nine 3s.
Russell connected from deep with 53 seconds left in the second OT and also hit another earlier in the period after also making two 3-pointers late in regulation on the way to 28 points.
James scored 12 points in the two OT periods and recorded his third triple-double of the season and 110th of his career. Davis added 29 points and 13 rebounds.
Klay Thompson hit a tying 3 with 5.9 seconds remaining in the initial overtime and another late in the second extra period before fouling out with 1:14 left in Golden State’s first double-OT game since a 143-141 victory against Atlanta on Jan. 2, 2023.
Davis returned after an injury scare in the third. He made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go in regulation, then missed the first of two with 14.7 seconds left — giving Golden State the ball down 118-116. Curry drove through the paint for a tying layup with just under 6 seconds

These star-studded teams played another thrilling game after the Lakers beat the Warriors in a six-game Western Conference semifinals last year.
Los Angeles hit 38 of 43 free throws, while the Warriors attempted only 16 — and they didn't like that.
“I might comment on the free throws that they shot, but my mom is here right now and I want to be on my best behavior so I’m not going to comment on their 43 free throws to our 16,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “I’m not going to comment on Steph shooting three free throws in

Curry notched his second straight game with six or more 3s and third in five and also his fifth consecutive game with 25 or more points. It was his third 40-point performance this season and 65th of his career.
James and Davis combined to shoot 14 for 19 in the first half and wound up 25 of 49 for the night and contributed to a 55-50 rebounding edge.
The Warriors scored a season high points and their 23 3-pointers were a season best. Golden State used its 15th starting lineup — with Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga on the floor for the opening tip together for the first time this season.
This was a second straight heartbreaking defeat for the Warriors after losing 134-133 to Sacramento on Thursday night in another 2023 playoff rematch. The Warriors eliminated the Kings in Game 7 of their first-round matchup.
Kuminga followed up his career-best 31-point performance Thursday with 22 points and has scored 20 or more points in a career-best six straight games.

Kemp's approach to the rim was a spectacle of anticipation. As he took off, it was as if he harnessed a force of nature, unleashing it with each thunderous slam. His dunks were characterized by their ferocity and the sheer physicality he exhibited, overpowering defenders with ease. The
force with which Kemp dunked was so immense that it often seemed as if he was not just scoring, but making a statement.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver goes viral as fans mock In-Season Tournament courts
This season, Adam Silver and the NBA decided to try out something new with the addition of the In-Season tournament, which is starting this week. Fans had long lamented how seemingly boring and inconsequential the NBA season was up until around Christmas, which prompted the
decision by Silver and company to try to spice things up by having players compete for the In-Season tournament trophy.
One change that accompanied the addition of the tournament was each team coming up with an alternate court design to use during tournament home games, many of which feature bright colors that are quite the jolt, or assault, to the senses.
Fans recently took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to express their thoughts on the changes.
Some users noted just how bright the courts were.
The Indiana Pacers had an extremely, shall we say, interesting design.

Curry makes last-second layup to give Warriors 141-139 win over Thunder in tourney opener
The Warriors come up victorious following a controversial reviewed basket with less than a second remaining to defeat the Thunder 141-139.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- — Wings are a valued commodity in the NBA because of the versatility they present on both ends of the floor. Pesky defense by players within the 6’5”-6’8” profile, wingspans that can stretch for miles, and varied offensive skill sets that don’t make them a negative on
the other end of the
floor — many games have been won with that unique blend of two-way versatility.
The Golden State Warriors have one wing who falls short of what traditionally constitutes as wing height. At 6’3”, Gary Payton II is a pesky wing in a guard’s body. He sometimes moonlights as a big because of his ability to set screens, roll to the rim, and finish up close:
But while Payton’s height places a proverbial ceiling on his versatility as a switch-everything piece, take a look instead at what his wingspan is — 6’8”.
Being a plus-5 in terms of wingspan (that is, his wingspan is five inches longer than his height) is a massive boon for his ability to make life a living hell for ball handlers at the point of attack. Off the ball, passing to an area where he lurks nearby is ripe for Payton to jump the passing
lane and intercept the pass.
Late against the Warriors’ thrilling 141-139 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder — their first win of the In-Season Tournament — Payton flashed the skills on defense that once garnered him the distinction of one of the league’s premier perimeter stoppers.
Steph Curry Steal & No-Look Lob to Gary Payton II
A recap of what Payton did above:
He ran the floor and deflected a Josh Giddey pass to the corner, preventing what could have been a transition bucket and allowing the Warriors to reset their defense.
As he tries to switch onto Luguentz Dort without the seeing the ball, he instinctively turns around and deflects the pass intended for Chet Holmgren in the corner.
He switches onto Giddey, sits on Giddey’s spin, and gets his hands on the ball to force a jump ball — which he went on to win.
In a nutshell of a possession, Payton displayed exactly why a healthy version of himself is a valuable cog in the Warriors’ defensive machinery — arguably its second most important behind Draymond Green.
Payton is a defensive playmaker of the highest level, but Green is the ultimate defensive organizer and floor general. When the two are on the floor, offenses will almost always be made to work hard to score a bucket.
The difficulty level ramps up for opponents simply because of Green’s prescience — seeing things before they happen. When the Thunder intend to hunt Steph Curry on a half-court possession, Green immediately diagnoses the situation, sniffs out the Thunder’s intentions, and executes
the proper countermeasures:
The Payton stop and forced turnover on Jalen Williams is the cherry on top, but what makes this possible in the first place is Green preventing the Thunder from hunting Curry by “pre-switching” Curry off of Cason Wallace. This results in Green being involved in the ball-screen action
instead of Curry.
Once Williams sees that Green will be the one involved instead of Curry, he waves off the screen and chooses to isolate against Payton instead — a matchup the Warriors will take any day.
The Green and Payton connection was also present during a crucial offensive stretch. Although he’s been shooting the three at an above-league-average rate on a small sample size this season, defenses have often elected to ignore Payton on the perimeter. The lack of perceived spacing
threat means that Payton either has to take those open shots — something defenses will have no problem doing no matter the result — or he has to be in a spot that takes advantage of his other skills and allows him to feast on the attention that Curry garners.
Curry makes two non-spacers work because of the threat of his shooting, but a middleman is necessary for the ball to find its way to the Warriors’ play finishers off of created advantages. Green has played that role for the nearly a decade — and he hasn’t lost a step in that regard.
When Green “keeps” the ball instead of handing it off to Curry, the Thunder defense suddenly find themselves with a backline numbers disadvantage — with Payton parked in the dunker spot instead of spacing out:
Even at a generous 6’6” with a 7’1” wingspan, Green profiles more as a four who occasionally moonlights as a five, instead of being considered a bona fide wing. But his ability to switch across the positional spectrum gives him the chops to defend like a versatile wing.
The Warriors are fond of switching everything with a smaller lineup — that is, whenever Green is slotted in at the five. With Kevon Looney and Dario Šarić having trouble against a fast Thunder team with a legitimate stretch center in Holmgren, Kerr was compelled to close the game with
Green sliding up a position.
This meant every screen was to be switched in an effort to keep things in front, to prevent dribble penetration as much as possible, and to bleed the shot clock long enough for the Thunder to resort to a stagnant, less-than-ideal shot attempt in terms of success rate and efficiency.
Thompson — a 6’6” wing with a 6’9” wingspan — is another important cog in the switching machine. He switches onto Holmgren after Green cuts off Wallace, stays in front, and forces another reset.
Thompson then switches onto Giddey and forces the tough late-clock shot — and goes on to drill the three on the other end:
When Green gets switched onto the smaller Wallace later on, he tracks the drive using a blend of lateral movement, length, and anticipation — tools he has used throughout his tenure as arguably the league’s best defender:
It wasn’t just Payton, Green, and Thompson who positively contributed — the entire wing room had their own moments against the Thunder.
Jonathan Kuminga bucked a mediocre first half to finish the game with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He was part of the Chris-Paul-led bench crew that kept the Warriors within striking distance and cut what was once a seven-point Thunder lead to a tied game at the end of the third
quarter.
(That lineup — Paul, Moses Moody, Payton, Kuminga, and Šarić — outscored the Thunder by six points in 10 minutes.)
After Moody used every bit of his 7’1” wingspan to douse the flames of a red-hot Dort, Kuminga and Paul paired up for some transition ball-screen action. The Thunder try to switch the screen, but Isaiah Joe finds himself on the wrong end of the switch onto Kuminga, which gives him the
lane to roll toward the rim, with Paul finding him with a nifty pocket pass:
Kuminga’s defense was also of note, despite some booboos and mistakes (which included a failed switch onto Dort on a sideline out-of-bounds set that led to free throws). This seal on Vasilije Micić as a result of running the floor in transition, followed by a successful stop against Williams,
is the quintessential Kuminga two-way-wing experience: 6’8” height, 6’11” wingspan, and the athleticism and physicality to go along with it:
Moody hit both of his threes during the bench-unit run, both of which reclaimed the lead for the Warriors and maintained pressure on the Thunder to respond:
Last, but certainly not the least, was Andrew Wiggins, whose 17-point performance on 6-of-11 shooting is what most will point to when it comes to the box score. But it’s his four offensive rebounds that are more of note.
Wiggins hasn’t had the best start to the season. He’s averaging only 12.3 points on a 45/15/64 shooting split. His scoring efficiency has dipped: 50.2% True Shooting.
More notably, he hasn’t been rebounding the ball. His total rebounding rate of 4.4% is on track to be a career low, as well as his offensive rebounding rate (2.5%) and defensive rebounding rate (6.2%).
Wiggins grabbed *only* five rebounds against the Thunder, but it was a step in the right direction in terms of effort on the boards:
But for the Warriors to truly return to who they were two seasons ago, they’ll need more than just a spurt of improved effort from Wiggins — they’ll need the version who was arguably the second-best player on a championship team.
Until that version resurfaces, the Warriors’ wing room will collectively continue to step up to carry the load.

The Suns erased a 27-point deficit, tying it at 116 with 4:21 left on Keita Bates-Diop's 3-pointer, but the Spurs responding by scoring the next 12 points, including 10 from the precocious Wembanyama.

In just his fifth NBA game, Wembanyama produced a handful of highlight plays, including flying down the lane for a dunk in the second quarter. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman shot 15 of 26 from the field and had 10 rebounds.
“He's a multi-faceted player — he'll pass to the open guy,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He's got confidence in himself. He made some plays that were unbelievable. That combination is pretty good.”
But it was his poise down the stretch that might have been most impressive. The 19-year-old forward hit a 3-pointer, made three free throws, dunked and hit an 18-foot jumper during the decisive run.
“Every game, we try to find the sweet spot where we need to hurt them,” Wembanyama said. “Today it might be this way, tomorrow it might be someone else. It’s how great teams work.”
Phoenix's Devin Booker returned from a sprained ankle and nearly had a triple double with 31 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. But it wasn't enough for the Suns, who had 14 turnovers. Kevin Durant had 28 points.
It was the second time in three days the Spurs beat the Suns in Phoenix. San Antonio shocked Phoenix 115-114 on Tuesday night, erasing a 20-point deficit and scoring the winning basket after Keldon Johnson stole the ball from Durant in the final seconds and made a contested layup

The Spurs led 75-55 at the break after Wembanyama hit back-to-back 3s late in the second quarter.

D'Angelo Russell scored 27 points and Anthony Davis had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the short-handed Lakers, who beat their local rivals for the first time since July 2020 in the Florida bubble. The 17-time NBA champion Lakers hadn’t beaten the Clippers on the Lakers' home court at
their shared arena since Christmas 2016, also losing 11 in a row.

“That was known,” Reaves said about the skids. “But at the same time, for me, and I (think) I speak for everybody, you want to win every game.”
With James Harden watching in street clothes on the Clippers' bench, Kawhi Leonard scored 38 points in their second loss of the young season. Paul George scored 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, including eight points in the final minute, before fouling out 30 seconds into
overtime.
Paul George Fouls Out in Overtime
“We played hard,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “We just didn’t play smart at times. (Poor) shot selection, and (we needed to) keep our turnovers down a little bit. I can’t fault the effort.”
Although the Lakers used just eight players due to five significant injury absences, they rallied from an early 19-point deficit before blowing an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds of regulation.
George, who had six 3-pointers, hit three free throws with 17 seconds left to tie it. Russell had an open shot at the buzzer, but missed.
The Lakers took a five-point lead in overtime when Reaves stole the ball from Leonard, drove the court and flung an alley-oop to James for a one-handed slam with 2:12 left.
Leonard answered with a three-point play and his fifth 3-pointer, but Reaves hit two free throws with 48 seconds left and Russell Westbrook missed a tying 3-point attempt before Christian Wood threw down a vicious putback dunk for the Lakers with nine seconds to play.
Westbrook scored 24 points against his former team.

James added 12 rebounds and seven assists in the 38-year-old’s latest standout game of his 21st NBA season. His Lakers have won two straight since losing in overtime at Sacramento on Sunday night.
“It’s just been a process this year of us figuring each other out as a group,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said."
P.J. Tucker played 21 scoreless minutes in his debut with the Clippers, who officially acquired him and Harden earlier in the day in a multi-player trade with Philadelphia. Harden will ramp up to playing shape during the next four days before the Clippers' next game, but the team is
already confident about the 2018 MVP and Los Angeles native's ability to mesh with its three incumbent Southern California-born superstars.

“It’s going to take a lot of sacrifice, whether it’s shots, whether it’s minutes,” Lue said. "They’re willing to do that.”

Leonard scored a career-high 18 points in the first quarter, hitting seven of his eight shots with four 3-pointers. The Lakers chipped away for the next two quarters and finally reclaimed the lead late in the third.
“They dialed in, made sure they got to me, was in the gaps,” Leonard said. “They’re not going to just let somebody keep shooting the ball.”
George picked up his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter, but still turned in a spectacular stretch effort.

PHOENIX -- — Keldon Johnson stripped Kevin Durant and made a contested layup with 1.2 seconds left to give the Spurs their only lead of the game and a 115-114 victory over the stunned Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.
The Spurs, who trailed by as many as 20 points, broke a nine-game losing streak against Phoenix.
Johnson had 27 points to lead San Antonio, which outscored the Suns 33-19 in the fourth quarter. The Spurs were coming off a 40-point loss to the Clippers on Sunday in Los Angeles.
After rookie Victor Wembanyama's dunk cut the lead to one, the Spurs trapped Durant in the corner.

“I went for a steal (earlier) and I saw Tre (Jones) had him in the corner and I was just like, the worst that happens is they call a foul," Johnson said. "We had to make something happen.
“We kept fighting, stay together regardless of what’s going on. Try to correct our mistakes.”
Suns coach Frank Vogel saw the decisive play differently.
“They fouled him, the refs didn't call it,” Vogel said. “They whacked him on the arm before the ball gets ripped out of his hands. No call. In a situation like that, we try to get a quick inbounds to our 90% free-throw shooter, and we did.”

Playing in his fourth NBA game, top draft pick Wembanyama missed his first five shots before throwing down a sensational dunk in the final seconds of the first half. He scored 18 points and had a team-high eight rebounds in 28 minutes. Devin Vassell also had 18 for the Spurs.
“They responded great,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, referring to the blowout in the previous game. “They kept playing through it. We made a gazillion mistakes, but it’s a game of mistakes. We kept playing and that’s the best thing. I was really proud of them.”
Durant led Phoenix with 26 points. Eric Gordon scored 20, Grayson Allen had 19 on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range for the Suns, who played without injured starting guards Bradley Beal and Devin Booker.
Jusuf Nurkic had a game-high 12 rebounds for Phoenix, which scored the game's first eight points.

29% from the field in the quarter and made just 1 of 11 from 3-point range.

LeBron James, Kevin Durant cherish first meeting in nearly five years
LOS ANGELES -- — When Kevin Durant scored in the final minutes, LeBron James answered. These two generational basketball greats put on a scintillating duel in their first head-to-head matchup in nearly five years.
Although Durant was better in the first three quarters, he eventually had to concede he couldn't do it alone.
James didn't have to.
LeBron takes over late to put Lakers ahead
Anthony Davis had 30 points and 13 rebounds, James scored 10 of his 21 points while playing the entire fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Lakers blew past Phoenix in the final minutes for a 100-95 victory over the short-handed Suns on Thursday night.
James made the tiebreaking layup with 1:11 to play for the Lakers, who rallied from a 12-point deficit entering the fourth to get their first victory of the new season in the home opener of James' 21st NBA campaign.
The 35-year-old Durant finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds while moving into 12th place on the NBA's career scoring list.
But James, who reigns atop that list, stepped up with back-to-back layups in the final 90 seconds to seize the win in another memorable meeting.
“We've had so many battles, (and) we don't have many matchups left,” the 38-year-old James said. “Not sure how many we have left, so you don't ever want to take it for granted when you're out there with such a great player, one of the best to ever play this game. It's always a treat. It's fun.”
LeBron, KD embrace after first matchup since 2018
Durant nearly carried the Suns to an improbable victory with no help from injured Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but James was ever-so-slightly more clutch while also adding nine assists and eight rebounds.
“There were a few moments where you just appreciate what the fans are watching,” said Phoenix coach Frank Vogel, who has coached both superstars. “Two of the game’s greats just going head to head. Some collisions out there. The level of competition for Game 2 of the NBA season
was super-high. Felt like a playoff game out there. A boxing match. A slugfest. ... To see those two guys out there fighting for it was pretty special.”
Durant and James have been friends since Durant’s senior year of high school 17 years ago, but they improbably hadn’t faced each other on an NBA court since Christmas 2018. Injuries, load management and health and safety protocols prevented them from playing in the previous 13
meetings between James’ Lakers and Durant’s Warriors, Nets and Suns.
KD scores over LeBron to pass Hakeem on all-time scoring list
“Someone you just compare yourself to,” Durant said. “If you could accomplish and achieve some of the stuff that he’s done, you’re doing pretty solid for yourself. It’s just a baseline for yourself as a player to see how great you can be.”
While James was good, he wasn't totally responsible for how the Suns flailed down the stretch without Booker or Beal to take the focus off Durant. Phoenix led 84-72 entering the fourth, but missed 13 of its next 14 shots and committed 10 turnovers in the next 10 minutes.
Durant still tied it at 91 with 1:28 to play by scoring on two straight possessions. With his final bucket, he passed Hakeem Olajuwon for 12th place on the scoring list.
But James replied with two baskets sandwiching a missed 3-pointer by Durant. Austin Reaves and Davis hit free throws in the final seconds to ice it for LA.
KD stuffs Vincent at the Rim
James is entering his third NBA decade with the Lakers determined to limit his minutes for health optimization, yet Los Angeles struggled mightily whenever James was off the court in the first half. James and coach Darvin Ham decided to throw out the plan for one night because the
Lakers had all of their timeouts to maximize the freshness of James, who said he felt great after playing only 23 minutes in the first three quarters.
“It was tough,” Durant said. “He was pretty much coaching the team on how to guard certain actions. That’s what he’s been doing his whole career. ... It’s always a battle playing against high-IQ players like that.”
Eric Gordon added 15 points in Suns coach Vogel's first trip back to face the Lakers, who fired him 18 months ago after three seasons and one NBA title.
Booker sat out with left foot soreness after tweaking his foot late in his 28-point performance against Golden State on Tuesday. Beal still hasn't made his Suns debut due to lower back tightness.

SAN ANTONIO -- — Luka Doncic had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and the Dallas Mavericks spoiled the NBA debut of No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama, beating the San Antonio Spurs 126-119 on Wednesday night.
“It was fun,” Doncic said. “We knew the whole building was going to be loud. He’s probably one of the best prospects to enter the NBA. It was fun. For me, personally, I love challenges. So, that was a fun challenge.”
Dallas forced two turnovers in the final minute to preserve the victory. Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving added 22 points and Grant Williams added 17 points in the season opener for both teams.
“It was a hall of fame performance like (Doncic) does almost every night,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “He was great. Kyrie wasn’t bad either. So, the two future hall of famers got us.”
Doncic was cleared to play an hour before tipoff after being listed as questionable with a left calf sprain, and the All-Star guard played 32 minutes.
Devin Vassell had 23 points to lead San Antonio. Keldon Johnson added 17 and Wembanyama had 15 points.
Wemby Surges Late, Scores 15 points in NBA Debut
Wembanyama scored nine points in the final seven minutes after struggling with foul trouble in the fourth quarter. The rookie was 6 for 9 from the field and had five rebounds and two assists and a block in 23 minutes.
“One of the toughest things for a player is you get into foul trouble,” Popovich said. “You never get in a rhythm and you’re in and out of the game and that sort of thing. So, I thought his maturity showed even at a young age where he came in with the last, I think, seven minutes and just
played.”
Luka Stops on a Dime to Sink and-1, Reach 30 points
The Spurs started quickly, outscoring the Mavericks 43-36 in the opening quarter. San Antonio shot 6 for 12 on 3-pointers and shot 62% from the field.
Dallas responded by controlling the second half.
“We just locked down on it,” Dallas rookie center Dereck Lively II said. “We feel like there were a lot of long rebounds (and) a lot of missed opportunities. There was miscommunication (and) a lot of back door cuts and cuts to the rim. I feel as the game went on, we were just making sure
we were locked down on that so that we could be able to walk out with a win.”
Luka Steals and Deals to Secure Triple-Double
Wembanyama dazzled in the preseason, but he never battled foul trouble as he did against the Mavericks.
“For me, it was just a matter of being physical,” Williams said. “Make sure he doesn’t get to his spots, making sure that any shot that he takes you challenge and you swipe so you affect the shot even down low. Just playing with great energy and physicality so he feels off balance a little
bit.”
And Dallas took advantage.
Wembanyama was forced to exit after picking up his fourth foul with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter on a touch foul while attempting to set a pick on Derrick Jones Jr.
The Mavericks took their first lead 37 seconds later at 73-72 on a layup by Lively.
Lively had 10 points in the third as Dallas outscored San Antonio 32-23.
Luka comes up Clutch with Dagger 3-pointer
Wembanyama returned midway through the fourth quarter and quickly scored seven points to electrify the crowd. His first bucket came on an alley-oop that rolled over the rim, and he punctuated the run with a thunderous dunk.
“As I said before, we’re learning. It’s only our first regular season game together,” Wembanyama said. “We’re going to watch film and maybe this happened, but if we notice it on the film, the coaches and ourselves, the players will make whatever it takes to get better.”

Behind Devin Vassell, Zach Collins, Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan, the Spurs just tied the Mavericks at 115.
Victor Wembanyama may have struggled but he could still help the Spurs to an exciting win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Nuggets celebrate first NBA championship with banner, rings and 119-107 win over the Lakers
Reggie Jackson makes LeBron James touch the earth and splashes a triple to pad the Nuggets' lead.
DENVER -- — The bling and the banner were nice. What the Denver Nuggets really relished, though, was opening defense of the franchise's first NBA title with a 119-107 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
“We can't think about last year too much,” Jamal Murray said after the Nuggets followed the raising of their championship banner by dropping the hammer on the Lakers in the NBA's season opener, which featured Nikola Jokic's triple-double and LeBron James taking a few more breathers
than normal.
Nuggets fans chant 'Who's your daddy' to the Lakers
Jokic said the Nuggets fed off the emotion from the pregame ceremony to jump out to an early 18-point lead, which held up even after the Lakers got within three points in the fourth quarter.
“I think we controlled the game the whole time,” said Jokic, who had 29 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
Murray added 21 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 20, Aaron Gordon had 15 and Michael Porter Jr. had 12.
All of LA's starters also scored in double figures, led by James' 21 points in 29 minutes — his playing time is being monitored at the start of his 21st season.
“It helps,” Murray said with a smile.
Murray lobs a beauty to Gordon for the Alley-Oop Slam
James ended up playing about five fewer minutes than he's used to.
“I mean, I always want to be on the floor,” James said, “especially when you got an opportunity to win a game or feel like you can make an impact. But I guess there's a system in place and I'll follow it.”
James, the league's oldest player at age 38, stressed, “I'm not surprised or upset” about the Lakers monitoring his minutes as the season gets going.
Taurean Prince scored 18 points his his debut for the Lakers, his fifth team in nine seasons. Anthony Davis had 17 points, Austin Reaves 14 and D'Angelo Russell 11.
The Lakers trailed by 18 early but trimmed that deficit to 63-54 at halftime and used a 13-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to pull within 87-84 before Aaron Gordon stopped the run with a 3-pointer.
The Lakers never got closer.
Austin Reaves' steal leads to a thunderous flush on other end
After James' basket got Los Angeles within 103-96 with just over five minutes remaining, the Nuggets called timeout and came out of it with a 10-3 run featuring 3-pointers by Murray and Porter to put the Lakers away.
“We were trending in the right direction for a while there,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “Each quarter we had given up less and less and then they just kind of blew the game open.”
The Nuggets received their gold, diamond-encrusted championship rings — featuring a mini championship banner that rolls out from one side — in a pregame ceremony. Murray, wearing a microphone, told teammate Gordon, “I might play the first quarter with it!”
Nuggets coach Michael Malone relished one last hurrah over last season's breakthrough before turning his attention entirely to this season.
“Jason of Beverly Hills, I want to thank them for some really nice hardware. And then at that point, I was like, ‘Let’s get the game going,'" Malone said of watching the banner rise to rafters at sold-out, shaking Ball Arena.
“And I was also thinking about my father, just wish he was here.”
Jamal Murray bulldozes through AD for an and-1
Brendan Malone, the longtime coach and driving force behind the Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” defenses in the late 1980s and early ’90s, died earlier this month at age 81.
“So, a lot of emotions tonight but all really positive,” Malone said, “and to end it with a win is a great way to start the season off.”
The Nuggets went 16-4 in the playoffs — including a sweep of the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals — and finished things off by closing out Miami in five games to start a summer of celebrations from Denver's delirious downtown to Jokic's hometown of Sombor, Serbia.
JOKIC SNUBBED AND PRAISED
Jokic may have followed up back-to-back MVP seasons by leading the Nuggets to their first NBA title, but TNT left him off its graphic promoting its opening-night doubleheader featuring the Lakers-Nuggets and Suns-Warriors games.
The graphic featured LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum — the last an odd choice given that the Celtics don't play until Wednesday night. The slight upset Charles Barkley, the co-host of TNT's “Inside the NBA,” who apologized to the Nuggets and their fans for
the omission.
That said, Barkley opined in a pregame interview that he thinks the Nuggets will have a tough time repeating.
“I think they're in the mix. I'm a big Bruce Brown fan,” Barkley said of the starting small forward who signed a two-year, $45 million contract with the Indiana Pacers following Denver's title run. “They gotta replace him and the young guys gotta come on, and they're going to have to
adjust to being the hunted."

Suns’ Kevin Durant gets 100% real about relationship with Warriors fans amid return to Bay Area
The 2023-24 NBA season officially kicked off on Tuesday. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant got a chance to rekindle his days with the Golden State Warriors on the first day of the regular season. KD told the media after the game he has nothing but love for Dubs fans, per 957 The
Game’s Evan Giddings.
“It’s always good to be recognized for the work you put in so it’s exciting to see people I haven’t seen in a while. Some familiar faces and I feel like the fan base here had nothing but love and respect for me as an individual player and as a person. That’s all I can ask for,” Kevin Durant said.
Durant spent the first 10 seasons of his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder. He joined the Warriors in 2016 remained with the organization for the next four seasons. Behind the exploits of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green,
the Warriors won back-to-back NBA titles in 2017 and 2018.
Durant squared off against the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James in those two memorable NBA Finals series. KD eventually won two straight NBA Finals MVP awards and earned two NBA championship rings with Golden State.
The Warriors teams of Kevin Durant’s era were so good, Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George conceded they’re the best he has ever faced.
“That is by far the toughest Warriors team. That team is up there for the best team that I’ve played,” Paul George quipped in May.
The Warriors reciprocated their love for Durant on Tuesday. They showed a tribute video that included his greatest highlights with Golden State prior to their game against the Suns.

“Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game” - Alton Lister thinks that Shawn Kemp’s famous poster dunk on him was a form of revenge
By OREL DIZON
Is there any list of the most disrespectful poster dunks in NBA history that doesn't have Shawn Kemp's slam over Alton Lister? The iconic dunk remains etched in the memories of those who got to watch the league in the early 1990s.
It wasn't enough for the former Seattle SuperSonics star to jump through Lister, but the fact that Kemp pointed at his downed rival made the play more unforgettable. Much has been said about the dunk, and Lister also said his piece about it in an interview with ESPN a couple of years ago.
"During my era, I did not back down as a rim protector," Lister said. "I was challenged by a lot of players, and sometimes I was successful and other times, not. But Game 4 was a whole different story. Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game, and that's what he did. It was personal for him. That's why he
pointed at me after the dunk."
The dunk came during Game 4 of the first-round matchup between the Sonics and the third-seeded Golden State Warriors. Things had been testy between the two sides, with Kemp and Lister already having gone at it in the second game of the series.

Victor Wembanyama flashed all the goods in his preseason debut on Monday, finishing with 20 points in 19 minutes against Chet Holmgren and the Thunder. He hit a pair of 3s, hit the offensive glass, sprinted ahead in transition, made a couple high-end passes and self-created his way to the rim finished, where he
finished with both bully-ball power and sublime off-hand finesse. It was total-package stuff.
And this was just the offense, where Wembanyama, relatively speaking, will be a more of a work in progress throughout his rookie season and first career chapter. Defensively, he's ready to dominate right now, and he showed as much on Monday.
Let's look at two plays, one steal and one block, that illustrate the unprecedented defensive range Wemby is bringing to the table.
The first comes early in the first quarter. Wembanyama is defending Jalen Williams, who gets the big man turned inside out and beats him pretty clean to the rim. But Wemby is, first of all, so athletic that he's able turn his hips and start to recover fairly quickly, and from there, he's so long that he's still able to fly in
from outside the restricted area and still block what looked like a sure Williams layup.
Wembanyama is 7-foot-4 with an eight-foot wingspan. You can beat him, as Williams did here, and he very likely is still going to interrupt your shot, if not block it outright.
Exhibit B: A few minutes later, Wembanyama is covering Josh Giddey at the top of the key. Cason Wallace drives to the middle, and Wemby, from damn near the 3-point line, stretches, in one lunge, all the way to the free-throw line (the nail, in nerdy NBA parlance) and swipes the ball away, which leads to a run-out
dunk for his efforts.
There haven't been many 7-4 players throughout NBA history to begin with, but to be that big with that kind of reach and that kind of athleticism to put all those metrics to their fullest use, it's truly unprecedented. The ground this guy can cover has the potential to completely recode normal defensive geometry.
Wemby, in a switch-necessary league, is going to be able to cover smaller guys even if he can't always stay with them off the dribble because he can play such freakish catchup from behind (and also because it will be a chore to get off a clean jump-shot over his contests, let alone make one), and his ability to impact
all manner of shots, from all over the court, as a roving helper will be virtually limitless.
Honestly, look at this range.

FULL Trophy Presentation Ceremony - 2023 NBA Summer League 🔥
NBA Summer League 2023 updated bracket: Standings, results in Las Vegas
The best prospects in basketball have arrived in the Nevada desert for the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League.
All 30 teams have sent squads comprised of top draft picks, rookies and other talented prospects to compete in a tournament that will last ten days. Each team will play at least five games, with the four best teams advancing to the playoffs. When all is said and done, only one team will lift the trophy and be declared
the 2023 NBA Summer League champion.
This year's event comes with plenty of buzz. No. 1 overall draft pick and generational talent Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his debut for the Spurs. The 19-year-old French phenom will more than likely get his first taste of NBA action as fans eagerly watch on.
Other big names in attendance include No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller, No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson, brothers Amen and Ausar Thompson — who went fourth and fifth overall — and last year's No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren, who will officially begin his NBA career this season after injury ruled him out of the entire
2022-23 campaign.
As always, the competition will be fierce and the talent will be on full display. The Sporting News has you covered with all the latest updates from the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League:
This dunk was a real ball buster.
ByNate Hinton of the Rockets had an amazing day on Sunday ... until he had his testicles stomped into oblivion following a dunk.
Hinton was on the floor laughing following a foul, while Ed Croswell of the Jazz casually dunked the ball. Croswell hung on the rim, before dropping ... right onto Hinton’s nuts. It’s difficult to see whether the Jazz player noticed Hinton was laying below him, or whether he called out of him to move — but either way, life comes at you fast.
It takes some of the shine off an incredible game when you take a shot to the beans like this. Hinton is trying to make his mark and earn a spot on the Rockets roster this season, and honestly, his Sunday against the Jazz might have gone a long way to making that a reality. He finished with 27 points, on 9-of-16 shooting, including
44 percent from beyond the arc.
George was hyped as a top-10 pick for most of his freshman year at Baylor, but ultimately fell out of the lottery to No. 16 on draft night. If his run in Summer League is any indication, it sure feels like teams suffered from overthinking his evaluation. No rookie in Summer League was more impressive than George,
who showcased his ability to play on- or off-the-ball, hit tough shots, a sweet stroke from three-point range, and his ability to compete defensively. Before his run ended with a sprained ankle vs. the Nuggets, George had put up 21.2 points per game on impressive scoring efficiency (60 percent true shooting) across
six games in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. His masterpiece came in a 33-point, 10-assist game vs. the Clippers in Vegas.
George’s lack of top-end athletic burst often made it feel like every bucket he got at Baylor was a tough one. That didn’t look like a problem in Las Vegas: he was able to get to the cup with ease, and could always fall back on his pull-up jumper when he needed to. George still gets a bit of tunnel vision as a scorer at
times, but his comfort running offense with the ball in his hands boosts his ceiling, while his effortless spot-up stroke from deep gives him a high floor. The Jazz must feel like they got a good one at No. 16.
Wembanyama looked human in his Summer League debut, shooting only 2-of-13 from the field to help usher in some of the worst takes you will ever see. Fortunately, Wemby reminded everyone why he’s such a historic prospect in his second game, dominating both ends of the floor vs. Portland to finish with 27
points in 27 minutes, to go along with 12 rebounds, three blocks, and a couple three-pointers. The young Frenchman is arriving in the league with a suffocating amount of hype, but it wasn’t manufactured out of thin air. His talent really is that unprecedented.
The easiest translation for Wembanyama early in his career will come on the defensive end. At 7’5 with an 8-foot wingspan, he has all the tools to be the best shot blocker in the league. The Spurs are already using him as a “roamer” who will dart in to protect the rim as a help defender, which feels like the best role
for him for now. His offense will be full of both breathtaking plays and trying moments, and that’s all part of the plan. I’d expect him to take a lot of mid-range jumpers as a rookie, and plenty of those one-legged threes that will look amazing when they go in and frustrating when they don’t.
It’s no secret Victor Wembanyama is the hottest prospect to look out for when the 2023-24 NBA season begins. And rightfully so, because the San Antonio Spurs rookie has captivated audiences worldwide using a unique blend of size, skill, and shooting unheard of before.
With that said, we take a look below at the different facets of Wemby, including his height and wingspan, stats, and interesting facts about him most people don’t know yet.
How the NBA Today crew’s height compares to Victor Wembanyama 😂
One look at Wembanyama, and most people would think he stepped out of a cartoon. The rookie’s eye-catching frame resembles that of Kristaps Prozingis, Bol Bol, and Chet Holmgren.
Currently 19 years old, Wembanyama stands at 7 foot and 3.5 inches, weighs 209 pounds, and boasts a massive 8-foot wingspan. Also, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft uses size 20.5 basketball shoes every time he steps on the court to play.
Sure, those numbers may seem cartoonish, but the surprises don’t end there. There’s speculation that Wembanyama can still grow more, potentially two inches more to reach 7 foot 5, within the next two years. If that happens, expect a physique that’s truly one to behold.
Victor Wembanyama Drops 27 PTS in His 2nd Game | NBA Summer League 2023
Even before his first actual NBA game as a Spur, Wembanyama dominated the scene as a teenager in France. Although the French League doesn’t hold a candle to its more popular American counterpart, the fact remains that it’s still a tough competition to overcome for the 2023 NBA top overall pick.
While his first three years playing for Nanterre, Pole France, and LDLC ASVEL showed glimpses of what he can do on the court, Wembanyama’s final year playing for the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 is the one that showcased what he’s all about as a basketball player. In the span of 34 games, the French star
averaged 21.6 points on 47 percent shooting from the field, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game.
What’s impressive about those numbers is that Wembanyama led the French League in points, blocks, and rebounds at age 19. Furthermore, the fact that he won MVP, Best Defender, Best Young Player, Best Blocker, and Top Scorer during the league’s regular season is evidence enough that Wembanyama is the best French baller out there right now.
Meanwhile, in the Summer League, Wembanyama played just two games. His debut was quite rough, as he finished with just nine points on 2-of-13 shooting along with eight rebounds, three assists and five blocks against the Charlotte Hornets.
In his second outing, however, Wemby showed why the Spurs made him the No. 1 pick in the 2023 Draft. Against the Portland Trail Blazers, he exploded for 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting while adding 12 boards and three blocks.
Sure enough, it looks like Wembanyama will be able to transition his game to the next level considering the promise he has shown so far in his career.
Victor Wembanyama Leads Metropolitans 92 To The Betclic Elite Finales! | June 4, 2023
Back when Wembanyama was 11 years old, Nanterre 92 head coach Michaël Allard was out watching a Le Chesnay Versailles game. It was during this time that he noticed Wemby on the court and mistook him for the team’s assistant coach due to him standing taller than everyone else on his team.
Allard’s assumption was quickly proven wrong when he saw Wembanyama suit up and step onto the court to play. At this point, the Nanterre 92 head coach called his club’s Under-11 program technical director about the potential star he just discovered. This would become the start of the young player’s path toward
stardom.
Victor Wembanyama Interview After Being Selected #1 Overall In The 2023 #NBADraft
It’s a given that even at his young age, Victor Wembanyama is already making a big name for himself in the world of sports. The thing is, he isn’t the only athlete in his family.
Félix Wembanyama, Victor’s father, was a high jumper, while Elodie de Fautereau, his mother, was a former basketball player for the French national team and current coach at the Yvelinois Basketball Academy. Meanwhile, Wemby’s grandfather, Michel de Fautereau, once played for the Paris University Club basketball
team in France.
His siblings, Eve and Oscar, also play basketball. The former and eldest of the Wembanyama children plays for the Monaco Basketball Association after serving a stint with the French National Team. Oscar, the youngest of the three, has played for Nanterre 92 and even won the Under-15 French title.
With these people serving as Victor’s family, it only makes sense for the French phenom to develop such a professional attitude towards sports, even at a young age. Add his parents’ love for the game and the Spurs really did land a prodigy, not just in physical terms, but deeply integrated into Wemby’s very being as
well.
Victor Wembanyama vs. LeBron James: Who is the better NBA draft prospect?
A lot of word has been going around the past few months about Victor Wembanyama being the best young prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James. While that claim has been played around for years, there’s a pretty good chance Wemby is going to prove them all right, especially after James himself
acknowledged the French star.
Back in October last year, the four-time NBA champion said that Wembanyama’s talent is not of this world. The Los Angeles Lakers’ All-Star forward added that everybody has been a unicorn for the last two years, but in Wembanyama’s case, he sees the youngster more like an alien.
James’ thoughts about Wembanyama don't stand on shaky ground. The young star has already proven how talented he is by combining an unorthodox frame with guard-like skills, impressive shot creation, and a unique way of playing defense on the other end of the court.
Of course that also adds a ton of pressure on Wembanyama. Being compared to one of the greatest players to ever step foot on the hard court isn’t something that everyone can live up to. Nonetheless, if there is anyone who is capable of meeting those expectations, it’s certainly the new Spurs star.
Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are now done with 2023 NBA Summer League, and we’ve learned some things. The 7-foot-5 Frenchman showed off many of the reasons the Spurs took home No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. He also did do nothing (and could do nothing) to alleviate the biggest concern
about himself.
The Victor Wembanyama-Spurs NBA Summer League experience seemed to have it all. He struggled at first, dominated in the end, and showed the basketball world some of his mouth-watering potential.
Wemby’s first matchup was against the No. 2 pick in the draft, Brandon Miller, and his Charlotte Hornets. While Miller put up 16 to lead all scorers, Wembanyama scored just four points and pulled down eight rebounds in over 27 minutes. He also shot 1-for-6 from behind the 3-point line.
However, there were flashes of what could be as the big man blocked five shots. And that tantalizing potential continued to show through in the second game with a big performance from Wembanyama.
The Spurs took on the No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson’s Portland Trail Blazers, although Henderson sat with a minor injury. Regardless, Wembanyama dominated the game. He finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, which making two of his four 3-point attempts.
After those performances, the Spurs shut Wembanyama down for the remainder of the 2023 NBA Summer League. The team and everyone else had seen enough of the giant man who plays like Kevin Durant. Wemby showed he is the evolutionary Kristaps Porzingis with more potential than Chet Holmgren, and the
best 7-foot-plus prospect to come into the NBA since Ralph Sampson in 1983.
Here’s the thing, though, about these 7 feet and over players (and yes, KD is 7 feet tall, despite preferring to say he’s 6-foot-11). They have never held up over the course of long NBA careers. And the players mentioned above all share the trait of being skinny as well'
Durant has held up the best, but he’s also the shortest by quite a bit here. He was an Iron Man early in his career but played just 27 games in 2014-15 with a foot injury. And since missing the entire 2019-20 campaign with an Achilles tendon tear, he played just 137 of a possible 236 games in the last three years.
Porzingis has an even worse track record, playing in 402 games out of a possible 636 games in eight seasons. And the super-skinny Holmgren hasn’t played in an NBA game yet after sitting out his entire rookie season with an injury.
Ralph Sampson was the worst outcome of all these players. The 7-foot-4 big man dominated in college and early in his NBA career before injuries sapped him of his explosiveness and allowed him to play just 261 out of 656 games in his last eight seasons.
Now, Victor Wembanyama got through Spurs NBA Summer League just fine, while shorter, stouter players like Scoot Henderson and Amen Thompson ended up sitting games with injuries. Still, watching Wemby, you have to worry about how he will hold up.
Wembanyama is just 207 pounds at 7-foot-5. By comparison, the NFL is extremely concerned about the No. 1 pick in its 2023 draft, Bryce Young, because the Carolina Panthers quarterback because he is only 205 pounds at 5-foot-10.
The NFL and the NBA are completely different games, obviously, but to think the No. 1 overall picks are roughly the same weight and Wembanyama is over a foot-and-a-half taller than Young is mind-boggling.
Watching Spurs Summer League, you can see the type of players that are going to give Wembanyama problems. The 6-foot-7 to 6-foot-10, 250-plus-pound forwards can muscle the Spurs’ big man, throw a hip into him, and cut him off at the knees. Players like Draymond Green, P.J. Tucker, and the Morris twins will
toss Wembanyama around like a rag doll.
Plus, the way he plays leaves him more open to injuries than other players his size. Big men at 7-foot-2-plus have always played back-to-the-basket, paint-focused games. What makes Wemby so special is that he is a perimeter player at his size. That also means he drives to the basket way more than any player his
size ever has, and that is a recipe for injuries right there.
In the end, what 2023 NBA Summer League showed us is that Wembanyama has the potential to change the game. What it didn’t show us — over the course of just two games — is how he will hold up over the grueling 82-game NBA schedule.
And that is still the Spurs’ biggest concern about Victor Wembanyama after his 2023 NBA Summer League performance.
"It was kinda over the top" - Colin Cowherd sounds off on LeBron James' cringy ESPYs speech
Following Los Angeles Lakers' humiliating exit from the 2023 Western Conference Finals, LeBron James let his emotions get the better of him by hinting at retirement. However, The King ended all self-created doubt about his NBA future at ESPYs Awards and announced he'll be back for his 21st season in a speech
that didn't sit well with Colin Cowherd.
“It was kinda over the top," Colin said in the latest episode of The Herd. "Lucky for us. Standing ovation, playing to the crowd, I get it. I understand it's a star-driven league, but how about we make something cool in 2024 and beyond, an occasional moment of humility by a pro athlete? It's a little cringy. And how
'lucky' are we? There's a lot of good players in this league, and one of them just swept you.”
At this point, everyone is aware that James has entered the latter part of his NBA run. However, the level of play the 38-year-old has showcased at this point of his career is unprecedented, and judging by last season, there's more to come.
Moreover, with the moves the Lakers have made this summer, it is clear that the front office still thinks James is good enough to win his fifth championship next season.
Very few athletes have stayed competitive this late into their careers. Those who were able to stick around either fell off completely or put up numbers on losing teams. That's why NBA fans, even those who don't like LeBron, are aware of how lucky they are to witness such greatness at that age without James
having to remind them of it.
Chet Holmgren is finally healthy, and he’s already showing how he can take the Thunder to the next level.
There is no easy historical comparison for Holmgren. At 7’1 with a 7’6 wingspan, he’s fully comfortable handling the ball on the perimeter, taking threes, and making quick passing reads. Holmgren is also excellent at traditional big man skills: he’s a monster rim protector on defense, and a skilled finisher around the
rim on offense. He’s going to put an enormous amount of pressure on the rim as a roll man, and he barely has to jump to dunk with a reported 9’6 standing reach.
Yes, Holmgren is still very thin even after spending his injury year bulking up with muscle. There are going to times when he gets dunked on and the clip goes viral on social media — but that’s only because Chet tries to block everything and doesn’t care about being embarrassed. On a wider scale, Holmgren projects
as one of the very best shot blockers in the NBA one day. He’s extremely quick to the ball with his rotations, has tremendous hand placement on his blocks, and he’s never going to back down regardless of who is attacking the rim.
It’s incredible to think the Thunder’s rise last season happened without anyone resembling a real center on the roster. Of the top eight players in total minutes on Oklahoma City, only Josh Giddey — a guard — was taller than 6’6. Now a team already stacked with big guards and wings is adding a 7’1 monster inside
who can put a lid on the rim and dunk home any lob with his enormous catch radius. Of course, Holmgren’s game is so much more diverse than that.
Holmgren may not score 30 points per game at any point in his career, but he’s going to have a superstar impact regardless if he can stay healthy. Instead, Holmgren is the preeminent supersized connector of this era, someone who will do all the little things to help teams win while being taller and longer than
anyone on the court. He’ll space the floor as a shooter, keep the ball moving as a passer, hit the glass, and more than anything provide elite paint protection on defense. The only other young player with a skill set this diverse is Victor Wembanyama, and the whole world already knows he’s an alien.
The middle of July is too early for bold predictions, but let’s just say no one should be surprised if OKC takes another big leap up the standings this year. They already have a superstar in Gilgeous-Alexander, and the rest of their young core is developing wonderfully around him. The addition of Holmgren can take the
team to the next level. It isn’t out of bounds to believe this team can compete for championships in the next few years.
Holmgren has to stay healthy, of course, and that’s a big if. One of his greatest assets — his competitive spirit — can also be his downfall if he doesn’t learn to pick his spots. Hopefully a year away from the game taught him that much. If he can do it, the Thunder have the piece their rebuild has been missing.
There’s no cap on what could come next.
As he gets ready for his first season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has landed his first partnership. He will be teamming up with a company founded by Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma.
During a recent interview with People magazine, Victor Wembanyama talked about finding the best breakfeast taco in San Antonio. This led to him discussing his new deal with "Barcode," a plant based fitness drink. The company is led by Kuzma and former LA Lakers director of performance Mubarak Malik. For the
2023 No. 1 pick, teamming up with this group was an easy decision.
"It was a no-brainer to choose Barcode to partner with," he says, adding that the plant-based fitness drink "really stood out" from other beverages on the market with its herbal adaptogens that work to manage stress and restore balance."
According to the company's website, Malik spent nearly three years making the drink while working in the NBA. With a background in sports science and nutrition, he wanted to make a better alternative to other drinks out there.
"I spent 2.5 years making it and then I started giving it to the players who all liked it. After some time I started bringing it to people outside the gym and noticed that other people also liked it."
During his time in the league, Malik has worked with big name stars such as LeBron James and Carmleo Anthony.
Typically, the first deal NBA prospects sign after getting drafted is a shoe deal. That being said, Victor Wembanyama is in a bit of a different situation. Since he was a top player overseas before being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, he entered the league with one already secured.
Leading up to his Summer League debut against the Charlotte Hornets, news emerged regarding Wembanyama's endorsements. While playing in France, he agreed to a multi-year deal with Nike. Everything from that deal is expected to carry over into his NBA career.
It may be confirmed that Wembanyama has a deal with Nike, but the details are unknown. This opens the door for him potentially becoming a sneaker free agent in the early stages of his career.

San Antonio Spurs’ 2023 Draft No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama is setting some lofty goals ahead of his rookie season.
When asked on what would be a successful rookie year for him, Wembanyama told ESPN, “I’ve been looking into all the data of the past years, the past number one picks, and what impact they’ve had. I’m trying to be better than every guy before me.”
From a team perspective, Wembanyama also said in the interview he wants to have a “better record for my team than last year.”
Two of the best number one picks in recent memory include Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero. Zion made the NBA All-Rookie First Team as a rookie with the New Orleans Pelicans, while Paolo Banchero earned the NBA Rookie of the Year award with the Orlando Magic.
While Victor Wembanyama won’t make his season debut until October when the regular season begins, he gave fans a preview playing in two Summer League games. After a rough first outing versus the Charlotte Hornets, Wembanyama shined in a promising loss to the Portland Trail Blazers as he put up 27 points and 12 rebounds.
However, that would be Wembanyama’s last appearance for the summer as it was announced he would be shut down for the remaining duration of the Summer League.
Alot of great players have fans before even entering the NBA. They are often dubbed as generational talents and the San Antonio Spurs have just landed one in Victor Wembanyama. The NBA experiences an uptick in ratings, ticket sales, merchandise, and coverage just because of the hype. Did they achieve that
goal in the NBA Summer League?
Victor Wembanyama started his NBA Summer League campaign with the Spurs. He did have a rocky start but eventually pulled through. It is still a question of whether he will consistently perform at this amazing pace but some things are undeniable. He brings in a lot of cash to the league.
The rookie from San Antonio was front and center in the second most-watched Summer League debut of all time. His game averaged 1,386,000 viewers at a time. It also peaked at 1,632,000 spectators during one point of the broadcast, per Ben Cafardo of ESPN.
Fans were in for a treat for a treat in these past games. The Alien averaged a double-double in his first few games. He racked up 18 points per game and coupled it with some effective board crashing. Rebounding totals of 10 boards per game prove why he can use his height advantage.
Protecting the rim is also one of his specialties. The Spurs rookie racked up an average of four blocks in every matchup he saw on the court. All of these impressive numbers were done in nearly just 27 minutes of playing time.

🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
After playing just two NBA Summer League games, Victor Wembanyama has been shut down for the rest of the games, experiencing the San Antonio Spurs' traditional load management approach.
Wembanyama had a mixed performance in the two games he played. In his debut against the Charlotte Hornets, he struggled and only recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 steals while shooting a disappointing 17% from the field.
However, he showcased his potential in the following matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring 27 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting.
The 2023 NBA first-overall pick points out his busy schedule as the reason why he didn't have a good start in the NBA Summer League and he hopes to focus on playing basketball.
"In the past month, I think basketball wasn't even 50% of my schedule. I can't stand it. I know it's a special moment in my life, but I'm glad it's over. I just wanna hoop," said Wembanyama to the media.

NBA Summer League - Las Vegas
Friday July 7
FINAL
LAS VEGAS -- What did we learn from Victor Wembanyama's disappointing debut for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA 2K24 Summer League?
The No. 1 overall pick made his anticipated first appearance in a Spurs uniform Friday night. He squared off against No. 2 pick Brandon Miller and the Charlotte Hornets in front of a sellout crowd at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center -- a crowd that cheered Wembanyama's every move at the start of the night. Once the
game started, the crowd became less and less excited.

Kai Jones puts Victor Wembanyama on a poster
Wembanyama shot just 2-for-13 from the field, scoring nine points in 27 minutes while also contributing eight rebounds and five blocks in San Antonio's 76-68 win. It would be a mistake to read too much into a single game, especially in a summer league setting after a whirlwind two weeks since draft night.
We've seen other future stars start slowly in their summer debuts, such as Kevin Durant going 5-of-17 from the field in his first game with the Seattle SuperSonics as the No. 2 overall pick in 2007. With that in mind, let's go through the biggest takeaways from Wembanyama's debut.
In some ways, Friday night was the opposite of Wembanyama's last trip to the Las Vegas area. Squaring off against the G League Ignite and No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson last October, Wembanyama made seven 3-pointers -- many of them with a high degree of difficulty -- en route to 37 points in the first showcase
for NBA scouts and media.
Victor Wembanyama excites in summer league debut
When Wembanyama did make a 3-pointer late in the game, drawing a foul in the process for a four-point play, it came on a more conventional pick-and-pop opportunity rather than off the dribble.
Going forward, we can expect better shot-making by Wembanyama inside the arc. He saw multiple attempts off the dribble against smaller defenders -- and they're all smaller defenders for the 7-foot-3½ Wembanyama -- bounce in and out.
Wembanyama's first summer league score came as part of an and-1 when he was able to establish deep post position against Charlotte guard James Bouknight in transition. Taking advantage of the near 11-inch height difference with the 6-5 Bouknight, Wembanyama finished off glass and drew a foul for the three-
point play. That's the kind of play Wembanyama can make on a regular basis by running the court hard.
No, the court itself isn't much different from the FIBA version on which Wembanyama starred in his native France, aside from the 3-point line a few inches further back and the addition of the no-charge circle. But the size and athleticism of NBA defenders alters what Wembanyama is able to do, particularly off the
dribble.
Victor Wembanyama gets it done on both ends
As compared to the fluid style we saw Wembanyama play for Metropolitans 92 last season, he was evidently thinking about what to do with the ball on Friday. He drove into crowds for two of his three turnovers and narrowly avoided a couple of others when the ball was deflected away, but the Spurs were able to
recover.
Those turnovers are likely to turn into positive plays as Wembanyama better understands how he can and cannot attack defenses. The best part of Wembanyama's offensive game on Friday was his passing. He drove hard to the rim in transition, drawing the defense and setting up frontcourt mate Dominick
Barlow for a dunk with a left-handed pass as one of his three assists.
It didn't go into the box score, but I also liked Wembanyama finding rookie center Charles Bediako in the paint after a crossover move on the perimeter. Bediako drew a shooting foul on the play. Assuming opposing teams put their biggest players on Wembanyama, it will leave smaller help defenders trying to make
plays when he's able to draw defensive attention off the dribble.
Whatever his learning curve might be on offense, Wembanyama will walk into the league as a difference-maker on defense thanks to his size and mobility. Don't be fooled by a couple of defensive lowlights on Friday when he was on the wrong end of a Kai Jones poster and a juke move by Miller.
Julian Champagnie climbs the ladder for an emphatic poster
In fact, both plays showed the breadth of Wembanyama's defensive tool kit. He spent much of the second half matching up with the 6-9 Miller, chasing the No. 2 pick around the perimeter in a way no other player his size would attempt. On Jones' throw-in, Wembanyama was asked to help on ball handler Nick Smith
Jr. and then recover to the uber-athletic Jones -- something only the league's best pick-and-roll defenders accomplish.
Even as he was getting his NBA bearings, Wembanyama blocked five shots, spiking an ill-advised drive by Bryce McGowens and sending away a Tre Scott attempt with his left hand -- or possibly elbow. We also saw one of Wembanyama's blocks on the perimeter that could prove a specialty, as he rejected a Miller 3-
point attempt in the first half.
Wembanyama's length is a plus on the glass as well. He pulled down eight rebounds, which doesn't even account for a play where he was able to reach over -- way over -- Jones' back in order to tip away a missed free throw from outside position. That effort resulted in a foul on Jones.
Victor Wembanyama first NBA Bucket
Naturally, there's still room for development on defense. He needs to improve his core strength so players can't bump him off his spot while driving, something McGowens did in drawing a shooting foul. At times, Wembanyama was overly aggressive when he was late to the play, resulting in a pair of and-1s for
Charlotte.
We'll see whether Wembanyama plays on Sunday (San Antonio-Portland, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2) in Las Vegas or is shut down in order to prepare for the grind of the regular season. Either way, it's reasonable to expect there won't be many nights like Friday ahead as part of Wembanyama's development.

All 30 First Round Picks Of The 2023 #NBADraft
The 2023 NBA Draft has come and gone, meaning it's time to break down the picks.
There are a few things to consider when reacting to how a franchise did on draft night. Did the team select the best talent available or did they draft to fill a need? Did they reach for a certain prospect or did they land a diamond in the rough who fell later in the draft than originally expected? Did the moves each
franchise made make sense for the direction and timeline of their current roster?
Keeping those things in mind, The Sporting News ranked all 30 teams, giving each franchise an overall grade for their activity on draft night.
Picks: Victor Wembanyama (#1), Sidy Cissoko (#44)
The Spurs won the NBA Draft the second they landed the No. 1 pick in the lottery. In addition to a generational talent like Wembanyama, San Antonio landed a talented two-way prospect in G League Ignite wing Cissoko in the second round.

He will be the first Spurs player to don the digit since Lonnie Walker IV wore the jersey during the 2021-22 season.
Wembanyama wore No. 1 while dominating the French league with 21.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season. That's why some fans at Barclays Center Thursday night already had custom-numbered Spurs jerseys ready for him to sign before the draft even took place.
Wembanyama said his jersey number is a reference to both Magic Johnson and his mentality.
"I don't want to leave others behind or put anyone down, but I want to be the first, the number one," Wembanyama told French news outlet Le Parisien in December (h/t the Mirror.)
After his selection at the top of the board, Wembanyama's No. 1 jerseys were unveiled for sale.
Here’s a look at the first officially NBA licensed Victor Wembanyama Spurs jerseys.

“The most humblest MF” - Kevin Garnett is in complete awe of Nikola Jokic
While Nikola Jokic might not be as expressive as his peers on the NBA hardwood, the two-time MVP is still undoubtedly the kind of leader the Denver Nuggets desperately searched for.
During the most recent episode of the ‘Ticket & Truth’ podcast,’ host Kevin Garnett highlighted how ‘The Joker’ was barely visible in the team’s championship picture, letting his teammates fetch all the limelight and glory.
“Joker looks like the most humblest motherf**ker I've ever seen. He's a one-of-one. I've never seen the championship picture being taken with your best player in the third row of the picture,” Garnett told Paul Pierce.
As ‘The Big Ticket’ pointed out - Jokic has thrived because of his humility and unflappable demeanor, securing the most minimal spotlight even in the championship parade.
Even when Michael Malone’s team won their first-ever championship, the Serbian was quick to uplift Kentavious Caldwell Pope’s stature. Jokic intentionally crashed into the 30-year-old’s press conference to remind everyone how he is a 2-time NBA Champion.
Solidifying himself as one of the greatest centers of all time after averaging a triple-double throughout the 2023 playoffs, this 28-year-old deservingly has an opportunity to ascend even higher as his career progresses.
After conquering the league in the most oozing manner, Jokic headed back to Sombor, where his beloved horses anxiously await. However, fans put up a special billboard for the reigning NBA Finals MVP, celebrating his grandeur.
That being said, Serbia is now a certified land of champions. From Novak Djokovic winning his 23rd Grand Slam (most of all time) after beating Casper Ruud in the French Open Final, Jokic is the latest to add another illustrious award to the pride of their country.
Viral video of Nugget center Nikola Jokic shows he played exactly same way as kid
Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic cemented his claim as the best basketball player in the world. The Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals and finished with an impressive 16-3 playoff run.
Jokic was named Finals MVP after he averaged 30.2 points on 58.3 percent shooting (42.1 percent from 3-point range), 14.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the series. He is becoming one of the best big men of all-time thanks to his passing and overall offensive talent.
Thursday, a viral video surfaced of Jokic’s play as a kid. He dribbles the ball up the floor, attacks the offensive glass and passes in transition.
He seems to have never wavered from his strengths. Now, he’s a champion.
Jokic’s reign as the NBA’s best player is not likely to end soon. The Nuggets have him, guard Jamal Murray and forward Michael Porter Jr. under contract through 2024-25. Jokic has won two MVP awards and could win more thanks to his skill set.
Denver is also coached by Michael Malone, who has raised the Nuggets’ core and wants to be around for more title runs.
Jokic grew up in a difficult situation. Shortly after he was born, the NATO bombed Serbia for 11 weeks. Jokic was raised in a two-bedroom apartment that he shared with his parents, brothers and grandmother.
“I remember things like sirens, bomb shelters, always turning off the lights,” Jokic said in an interview with Bleacher Report. “We practically lived in the dark. Even at like 9 a.m., everything was turned off.”
Earlier this week, Jokic and his family got to celebrate an NBA championship after a difficult season in their life. The Nuggets have their championship parade Thursday.
