USC Basketball: Watch Bronny James Record Career High In This Stat Vs Ducks

Story by Ricardo Sandoval

Lebron James Sport GIF by NBA

Your USC Trojans have dropped their last six games and remain in last place in the Pac-12 standings. Things look bleak for the Trojans, and it wasn't any different in their latest contest against the Oregon Ducks at the Galen Center.

It was another disappointing outing, but the lone bright spot in the loss was freshman star guard Bronny James. James was out there looking like his father as he dished out a career-high seven assists in the loss.

James's seven assists were not only a career-high but a game-high.

Outside of the seven assists, James also chimed in with six points, four rebounds, and shot 2-for-5 from the field in 22 minutes. The 22 minutes was an increase from the 15 minutes he played in their 65-50 home loss against UCLA.

For the season, James has averaged 2.4 assists per game, along with 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds. He's shown flashes of his potential. Hopefully, the game against the Ducks could help propel him into an integral part of the team and, more importantly, lead the team to victory.

Here are all the seven assists.

NEW YORK -- — Stephen Curry looked at a box score that showed no Warriors but him made a 3-pointer.

It certainly wasn't a pretty win, but in what's been a difficult season, Golden State will take them whatever way they come.

Curry scored 29 points, Jonathan Kuminga added 28 and the Warriors shook off a poor start to beat the Brooklyn Nets 109-98 on Monday night.

The Warriors were coming off an overtime loss Saturday in Atlanta despite 60 points and 10 3-pointers from Curry, and looked as if they hadn’t regained their energy when this game started. Golden State was just 2 for 11 on 3-pointers and committed 10 turnovers that led to 15 points

while being held to 43 points in the first half.

But they outscored the Nets 66-49 in the second half, even while going just 4 for 22 from behind the arc in the game — with all the makes by Curry.

“It was ugly on both sides but I think everybody was trying to execute and trying to settle into the style of the game, and then thankfully in the second half we made the right adjustments and took control and never looked back,” Curry said.

Golden State hadn't won a game when shooting under 19% from 3-point range since beating Boston 108-88 despite going 5 for 28 (17.9%) on March 15, 2014, the season before winning its first of four titles in eight years.

Kuminga added 10 rebounds while reaching 20 points for the ninth time in his last 10 games. Draymond Green finished with eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Warriors outrebounded the Nets 60-38 and had a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Cam Thomas scored 18 points, but shot 4 for 21 for the Nets, who had won three of four. Thomas scored 41 points in a loss in San Francisco in December, the most allowed by the Warriors this season.

Nic Claxton added 15 points and a career-high seven blocked shots before being ejected in the fourth quarter for a flagrant foul against Brandin Podziemski, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Nets scored 147 points against Utah on Jan. 29 and 136 in Philadelphia on Saturday. But they were nowhere close to that level Monday, shooting 38% and getting poor nights from leading scorer Mikal Bridges (5 for 15) and Spencer Dinwiddie (3 for 12).

“But we had our chances tonight. If we took care of the rebound piece, which we’ll continue to challenge our guys with —- that’s been a little slippage overall,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said. “If there’s one area we’ve kind of slid in, it’s definitely the rebounding piece and we need

multiple bodies to participate.”

The Nets played without Ben Simmons, who sat out the front of a back-to-back but is scheduled to play Tuesday when the Nets host Dallas in Kyrie Irving's return to Brooklyn.

The Nets were 3 for 16 from 3-point range in the first quarter, yet led 23-20 thanks largely to 12 points off seven Warriors turnovers. Golden State didn't reach 30 points until more than halfway through the second quarter and didn't get a 3-pointer until Curry made one with 4:29

remaining in the half, the 3,600th of his career.

Brooklyn led 49-43 at halftime, but Kuminga had dunks on Golden State's first two possessions of the third quarter and that seemed to loosen up the Warriors, who outscored the Nets 32-21 to take a 75-70 lead to the fourth.

“Against that kind of switching defense, if you’re kind of jogging through stuff it’s really easy to just switch and say in front,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “So I thought the first five minutes of the second half really set a good tone. Our guys were much sharper and harder with the cuts.”

Brooklyn cut it to four with 3:06 left, but Kuminga scored the next four points and Curry then scored Golden State's next five to make it 105-94.

DENVER -- — Jamal Murray loves that the Denver Nuggets can turn to their championship mettle in crunch time. He hates that they have to rely on that so often.

“I think we should just be a little bit more on point to start the game, not to have to kick it into another gear,” Murray said after the Denver Nuggets rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat the short-handed but spirited Portland Trail Blazers 112-103 on Sunday night.

The reigning NBA titleholders trailed by 14 in the first half and didn't take their first lead until their final shot of the third quarter.

“I think we just got to be a little more conscious, a little more aware of the task at hand each and every night that we’re gonna get their best shot,” Murray said. “I think we can give our best shot, as well, from the start.”

Nikola Jokic led Denver with 29 points, Murray added 21 points on a 10-to-1 assist-to-turnover night and youngsters Christian Braun and Peyton Watson provided the juice down the stretch for the Nuggets to get their second win over their division rivals in 48 hours.

Four other players scored in double figures, including Watson, a rookie who scored 10 of his 12 points in the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter blitz that improved Denver's home record to 21-4.

The Nuggets didn't trail by more than a bucket in their 120-108 win over Portland on Friday night, also at Ball Arena, but they didn't lead this one until the final seconds of the third quarter when Jokic's finger-roll layup broke an 84-84 tie.

Deandre Ayton Floats in and-1 for the Trail Blazers

The Blazers, who got got 27 points from Deandre Ayton and 26 from Anfernee Simons, quieted the sellout crowd most of the night. They were leading 84-75 with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter when Matisse Thybulle missed his second of two free throws.

The next time they scored came on Kris Murray's goaltended bucket with 10:44 remaining to cut Denver's lead to 91-86. During that stretch, the Blazers missed nine shots, including six from long range, and turned the ball over three times while the Nuggets were using that 16-0 run to pull away.

Jamal Murray Drops in Pull-Up 3-Pointer for the Nuggets

“Our defense got better as the game went along,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “We had zero defense. We had a little bit of defense. We got a lot more defense. And we had great defense.”

The Blazers certainly weren't hanging their heads after faltering late.

“I thought we played well for the majority of the game, all the game, to be honest with you," Simons said. “They’re a good team. They made runs. They’re a championship team. They’re a veteran team. We rolled out with a lot of young guys and sometimes that’s just what happens.

"So, I’m just glad that we stuck with it and continued to play hard. Overall, I’m pretty happy about how we played today.”

The Blazers had just one 3-pointer in 13 tries in the second half after knocking down 10 before halftime.

Christian Braun Impresses with Nice Basket

Murray and Thybulle got starting nods with Jerami Grant missing his second straight game with lower back tightness and Malcolm Brogdon still sidelined with a sore knee.

Reserve Scott Henderson, who turned 20 on Saturday, one day after scoring 30 points against the Nuggets, finished with 14 in the rematch. Over the weekend, Portland coach Chauncey Billups texted him a sort of congratulations.

“I said, ‘Scoot, there aren’t many guys in the entire world that can say they scored 30 points on the world champions as a teenager," Billups recounted. “But you're not a teenager anymore. Let's see what you're going to do in your 20s.”

ATLANTA -- — Another loss for Golden State drained the joy out of Stephen Curry's second career 60-point game.

Curry scored a season-high 60 points in the Warriors' 141-134 overtime loss to Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.

“It sucks to not have something to show for it,” Curry said after the Warriors fell four games under .500 at 21-25. Golden State is 12th in the Western Conference.

“It's frustrating, obviously, not coming away with the win knowing a couple plays here, a couple plays there could have been a different outcome," Curry added. "It just adds to our frustrating season.”

Curry goes for 60 in Overtime Loss to Hawks

Curry had eight points in overtime to finish only two points shy of his career high of 62 at home against Portland on Jan. 3, 2021. He was 22 of 38 shots from the field, hitting 10 of 23 3-pointers, and made all six of his free throws.

“It just seems he continues to get better, which is special at his age,” Golden State's Draymond Green said about the 35-year-old Curry.

Coach Steve Kerr described Curry's game as “incredible.”

“We competed like crazy but just couldn't get over the hump,” Kerr said.

Hawks Outlast Warriors in OT Despite Huge Game from Steph

Young led the Hawks with 35 points. Dejounte Murray scored the last seven points in an 11-0 run to open the overtime for Atlanta and finished with 19 points. Onyeka Okongwu had a career-high 22 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, and Jalen Johnson scored 21 points.

Curry scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead jumper with 14 seconds remaining. Murray answered with a jumper from the free-throw line to tie it. Curry missed a last-second jumper to send it to overtime.

The Hawks have taken advantage of a six-game homestand to win four straight games, matching their best stretch of the season. They are 4-1 on the homestand.

Young and Curry embraced on the court after the game. Young often says he looks up to Curry and enjoys the opportunities to play against one of his favorite players.

Jalen Johnson Drains Basket vs. Golden State Warriors

“They're a lot more fun when you win,” Young said. “You always want to battle, you always want to compete, you want to show your best off against the best. ... Steph was obviously going in that second half.”

Young, averaging 27.3 points, is second in the NBA with 11 assists per game but did not make the All-Star team.

“I told him after the game it will all come back to him if he continues to approach the game in the right way,” Curry said about Young.

The Warriors were short-handed, especially after the first half.

Forward Dario Saric (illness) missed his second consecutive game. Forward Andrew Wiggins suffered what Kerr said was a left foot injury late in the first half and Jonathan Kuminga fouled out with 1:06 remaining in regulation. X-rays on Wiggins' foot were negative.

Kerr said Saric could join the team for its next game at Brooklyn.

It was tied at 89 entering the fourth period. Curry scored Golden State's first two baskets of the final period and then gave the Warriors a 105-104 lead with a 3-pointer.

Kuminga scored 16 points, ending his streak of eight straight games with more than 20.

Young and Golden State's Lester Quinones, who scored 17 points, traded long 3s to end the first quarter. Young sank a 27-footer with less than 2 seconds remaining in the period. The Warriors quickly passed the ball to Quinones, who launched a halfcourt shot to beat the buzzer.

Golden State rookie guard Brandin Podziemski appeared to injure his right leg when he landed awkwardly when trying to avoid fouling Young late in the first period. Podziemski limped off the court, was escorted to the locker room and returned in the second period.

Hawks forward Saddiq Bey, who sprained his left ankle in the first half Friday night's 129-120 win over Phoenix and did not play in the second half, was ruled out before the game. Coach Quin Snyder before the game “It's not something that should keep him our for an extended period of time.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- — Jonathan Kuminga scored 29 points and the Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 121-101 on Friday night.

Stephen Curry had 20 points, six assists and six rebounds, and Klay Thompson added 14 points for the Warriors, who won their second straight. Kuminga was 11 for 15 from the field, with a 3-pointer, and surpassed 20 points for the eighth straight game.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Kuminga has “just really figured it out” in recent games, a product of his work and his game growing.

“The game has slowed down for him,” Kerr said of the forward. “He's understanding when to attack, how to attack. ... He's just so powerful and explosive going to the rim.”

Draymond Green scored nine points, and had 12 rebounds and six assists. Brandin Podziemski, a rookie out of Santa Clara, had 14 assists, double his previous best in a game this season, while scoring 12 points. He also had seven rebounds and no turnovers.

“It was more just trying to eliminate their fastbreak,” Kuminga said of the Warriors outscoring Memphis 36-28 in the fourth, including a 12-3 run in the closing two minutes. “We just had to slow them down and stay locked in at the end of the game.”

Neither team had played particularly well lately. The Warriors had lost four of six entering the game, including a 119-107 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.

Memphis, which has dealt with injuries to key players all season, came in on a skid. While the Grizzlies' three losses were by single digits, they have had trouble closing games. And they couldn't overcome the Warriors fourth-quarter advantage.

“Obviously, got away from us there in that fourth quarter in a tight battle,” Jenkins said.

The Celtics vs the Lakers Tonight

BOSTON -- — LeBron James has been pleading for weeks for the Lakers' supporting cast to provide him and fellow All-Star Anthony Davis some help as they fight to keep pace in a tight Western Conference playoff race.

With the two franchise cornerstones watching from the bench, they finally got their wish.

Austin Reaves scored a season-high 32 points and hit a career-high seven 3-pointers to help a Los Angeles team missing its biggest stars stun the Boston Celtics 114-105 on Thursday night.

“We're all talented players. And this was an opportunity to show the world what you can do,” Reaves said. “Before the game we come to together and was like, 'Look, the least we can do is we can do is go out there and play as hard as we can and live with the results.”

The result was perhaps the Lakers' best victory of the season.

The anticipated nationally televised meeting between the longtime rivals was tempered when James was ruled out because of a left ankle injury and Davis by an Achilles tendon issue and left hip spasms.

That sentiment that the game would be a mismatch didn't affect the remainder of the Lakers' young roster.

Jayson Tatum scored 23 points for the Celtics, who had 15 turnovers. Boston has lost three of its last five at home since starting the season 20-0 in TD Garden.

“It just happens. Stretches of bad basketball happen,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. “We can't sit here and act like we're too entitled for it to happen to us. It happens. And it's a matter of how we respond to it and how we work through it.”

Boston never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter.

Lakers big man Jarred Vanderbilt had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 16 minutes. But he limped off the floor in the final minute of the first half as he tried to turn up court following a strip of Tatum. He sat out the rest of the game with what the team said was right foot

soreness.

Thursday marked the first time this season both James and Davis have sat out the same game for Los Angeles, The Lakers began the day in ninth place in the West standings.

Ham said before the game that the injuries are things both players have dealt with throughout the season. It is unclear how long either will be sidelined. James has played 44 of of 49 games this season. Davis has appeared in 46 games.

Reaves said there’s no secret what they need to do when James and Davis return.

“If you remember Bron's quote the other night — ‘Go out and do your job.’ And I feel like that's just what we did tonight,” Reaves said. “It wasn't nothing special. It wasn't like we was out there running a million set plays. We went out there and competed our (butts) off. We gave it 110%

on the defensive end. We competed. We didn't foul much. Just bringing those two back, we need to continue to do the same thing.”

Durant added eight assists in his first game in Brooklyn since being traded to Phoenix nearly a year ago. He got a mixed reception early before leaving Nets fans little to cheer with 11 points in the third quarter, when the Suns outscored the Nets 42-26 after leading by three at halftime.

“He put the team first, went out and competed, played team-first basketball, had eight assists and several other plays where made the extra pass and allowed his teammates to play through his double-teams and played a team-first type of game and ended up with 33 and eight,” Suns

coach Frank Vogel said. “Hell of a performance.”

KD HUGE DUNK

Kingkaps7 GIF

Durant’s return earned the game a national-TV slot but it wasn’t much of a contest in the second half. The Suns, with Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, are trying to build a title contender, while the Nets — who not long ago had their own Big 3 with Durant, Kyrie Irving and James

Harden — are 19-28 and outside playoff position.

Kevin Durant Disrespects Cam Thomas and Calls him "Mini" after Scoring on him 😂

Jusuf Nurkic added 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns, overwhelming an undersized Nets team as the Suns won for the ninth time in 11 games. They improved to 3-2 on a trip that has stops remaining in Atlanta and Washington, Beal's former home.

“It’s tough. With a team like that you know they’re going to shoot well, just those three guys at a high level, so we had to pick our battles tonight,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said.

Booker finished with 22 points and Eric Gordon had 17. The Suns shot 62% from the field and 50% from 3-point range.

Mikal Bridges Cans the Transition 3

Cam Thomas scored 25 points for the Nets, who had won two straight games. Mikal Bridges, who came to the Nets in the Durant trade, had 21 and Lonnie Walker IV added 19.

Devin Booker Taunts Mikal Bridges with his Celebration in his Face after Dagger 3 😂

The Nets played a tribute video for Durant — who had wrote on social media that he didn't want one — before he was announced first among the Suns starters. He received cheers then, though was booed when he touched the ball in the early minutes.

“That wasn’t going to stop me from just doing my job, regardless of how I was honored,” Durant said of the video, calling the Nets a classy organization for the way they treat former players.

The swing of emotions was fitting, as Durant had said earlier this week that fans didn't know how to feel about him. He brought hope of a first NBA championship to the Nets when he and Irving signed together in 2019, but left without ever getting close. Brooklyn won just one playoff

series during that time in 2021, but Durant was disappointed with the way the Nets played while he was hurt the following season and asked for a trade in the summer of 2022.

The Nets held onto him then, but moved him to Phoenix before last year's trade deadline after Durant renewed his request after Irving had been moved to Dallas.

KEVIN DURANT. THROW DOWN.

The Nets were without Ben Simmons, who was sidelined with a bruised left knee just one game after returning from a 38-game absence with a pinched nerve in his lower back. Simmons came down awkwardly after blocking a shot in the fourth quarter Monday and Vaughn said the No. 1

pick in the 2016 draft's knee was swollen, though an MRI exam showed no structural damage.

The Suns broke it open in the third quarter with a 10-0 run that pushed an eight-point lead to 99-81. Durant had the first five points, and after Nurkic dunked, Durant scored while being fouled by Thomas, who is listed as 7 inches shorter. Durant stared for a few moments across the

baseline toward the crowd, then held his fingers close together to indicate that Thomas was too small.

The entire Nets team was too small. With Dorian Finney-Smith and Day'Ron Sharpe also sidelined, there was no ability to match up inside and Phoenix outrebounded Brooklyn 42-27.

Phoenix played without starting forward Grayson Allen, who sprained his right ankle Monday in a victory in Miami.

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Since Draymond Green returned from his second suspension of the season, the Golden State Warriors have begun looking like their balanced, ball-sharing selves again.

Stephen Curry is thriving as usual, Andrew Wiggins is working back into dominant form after a slow start, and Jonathan Kuminga is emerging as an electrifying playmaker.

Trayce Jackson-Davis Beats 3rd-Quarter Buzzer with a Dunk

Curry scored 37 points with eight 3-pointers, Kuminga added 26 points, and the Warriors beat the Philadelphia 76ers 119-107 on Tuesday night as guard Klay Thompson sat out with an illness.

“It's fun,” Green said, “I think it's starting to come together for us now. We've just got to string some wins together.”

Curry, who also had eight rebounds and seven assists, shot 12 for 17 in his third straight 30-point game. It was his third consecutive game with six or more 3s and his sixth in a row with at least 25 points.

He hit two straight 3s midway through the third as Golden State went ahead 69-57 and finished with 15 points in the period.

Wiggins added 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. Coach Steve Kerr credits Green for lifting up Kuminga and Wiggins — “telling us to keep going, no matter what,” Kuminga said.

“Draymond really changed things with his return because he connects those guys at both ends of the floor, just with his communication defensively and the way he helps get us organized offensively,” Kerr said. “Great to see Wiggs and JK both playing so well and playing well together. It’s

fun, you can see the team we’re shifting a little bit with how we’re playing and who we’re playing.”

Tobias Harris had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Joel Embiid scored 14 points for the Sixers before limping to the locker room with 4:04 left to a standing ovation after Kuminga fell on his left leg. Coach Nick Nurse said the center would have an MRI exam Wednesday.

Sixers Superstar Joel Embiid Ruled a Game-Time Decision vs. Warriors Amid Knee Issues

It was an important win for the Warriors to end their homestand following two straight one-point losses against 2023 playoff opponents — 145-144 to the Lakers in double overtime on Saturday night after a 134-133 loss to Sacramento on Thursday.

The 76ers dropped their fourth straight following a six-game winning streak. They hoped to have Tyrese Maxey return for the second night of a back-to-back but he sat out his third straight game with a sprained left ankle.

Wiggins made his first five shots and scored in double figures for the sixth time in seven games as Golden State won for just the third time in nine games. Kuminga extended his career-best streak of games with 20 or more points to seven. He has reached double figures in 24

consecutive games, also his most.

Brandin Podziemski replaced Thompson — the Warriors' 16th different starting lineup this season — and scored 11 on the day he was named to the All-Star Weekend Rising Stars roster. He drew his 20th charge, second-most in the league.

Dario Saric dished out seven of Golden State's 32 assists and Draymond Green had six to go with nine points and six rebounds.

Warriors guard Moses Moody is likely to return from injury during the upcoming road trip. He has been cleared to practice after straining his left calf Jan. 10. Chris Paul can begin light on-court individual workouts wearing a splint on his surgically repaired left hand that he injured Jan. 5.

The Warriors said he would be re-evaluated again in two weeks.

HOUSTON -- — Jalen Green scored 34 points and Alperen Sengun added 31 to help the Houston Rockets to a 135-119 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.

Houston led by as many as 30 points in the second half before the Lakers used a 20-5 run to get within 10 with four minutes left.

The Rockets scored the next six points, with three from Green, to make it 127-111 with about three minutes left and the Lakers removed their starters.

Green, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft, is working to be a more all-around player in his first season under coach Ime Udoka.

Cam Whitmore had 20 points off the bench for Houston, and Jabari Smith Jr. had 18 points and nine rebounds in his return after missing four games with a sprained left ankle. Green and Sengun also had 12 rebounds and seven assists each to help the Rockets to the victory.

The Rockets were up by 25 points after a basket by Sengun with about nine minutes left when the Lakers used a 12-3 run to get within 119-103 midway through the quarter.

Soon after that, James was knocked to the court after being hit in the face by Brooks as the two fought for a rebound. James remained face down on the court for a couple of minutes while team officials attended to him before getting up and walking off the court.

The play was reviewed and determined to be a flagrant 1 foul, and James remained in the game.

James missed both free throws, but made a layup seconds after that to start an 8-2 run that cut the lead to 121-111 with four minutes to go.

The Rockets led by 18 at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 16-4 run to make it 94-64 with about 7½ minutes left in the quarter.

Houston was up by 29 a couple of minutes later before the Lakers used an 11-2 spurt, with five points from Davis, to cut the lead to 101-81 with about two minutes left in the third.

James was disappointed in how they performed to end the first quarter.

“We just didn’t get back,” he said. “We didn’t have a sense of care factor. We didn’t have no care factor in those last two minutes.”

The Lakers' Jarred Vanderbilt was ejected in the second quarter after getting two technical fouls during an exchange with Brooks.

Vanderbilt got his first technical foul after pushing Brooks below the neck after a basket by the Lakers with about 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Brooks was walking away from Vanderbilt and had his back to him when Vanderbilt tapped him on the back of the head, drawing

another technical and an immediate ejection.

Vanderbilt appeared to be upset after Brooks pushed him while he was in the air on a dunk about a minute earlier. He landed awkwardly after making that shot and fell to the ground.

Sengun throws it Down Over LeBron

“I feel like he felt like I did a dirty play,” Brooks said. “And when he feels that way he likes to bump. And it’s basketball, we bump and tussle and I feel like he took it a little too far.”

James refused to talk about Brooks, but Davis had plenty to say about him.

“You take a hard foul, it’s part of basketball,” Davis said. “But you’re just not going to blatantly push someone in their back when they have no control of their body in the air. I think he should have got ejected for that. And then … obviously you know that him and Bron have their

whatever and from what I saw it was just a blatant hit on LeBron to the face.”

And at the very end, James made a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left to cap his triple-double of 36 points, career-high 20 rebounds and 12 assists, outdueling Curry as the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Golden State Warriors 145-144 on Saturday night.

“It’s something I’ll be able to talk about with my grandkids, talk about me being able to compete with one of the greatest players to ever play the game,” James said. “So hopefully I can be cool with my grandkids at that point, for sure.”

Curry danced through the paint for a layup that sent the game to overtime. He knocked down a 3-pointer high over Anthony Davis in the second overtime for a lead.

James scored the first points of a second extra session and found D'Angelo Russell the next time down for a 3.

“Every year we get to do this, the back-and-forth battles, all the Finals runs, to the playoffs last year, after the horn sounded tonight there was a little laugh of we can't like imagine a scenario where a game like tonight happens, his year, what, 21, and my year 15,” Curry said. “All the

Lakers coach Darvin Ham had to stay focused as he sat close-up to witness the greatness.

“Oh, man,” he exhaled afterward.

“Just trying to control myself first and foremost as a basketball fan,” he said. “They should be real happy in New York, this was a hell of a basketball game, a high-level basketball game. Two legends going back and forth, two great organizations. It was fun to be a part of. It’s just one of

those wins where it showed our character. Our group is really coming together.”

Curry hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in the second OT and sunk the one over Davis with 1:22 to go on the way to 46 points with a season-high nine 3s.

Russell connected from deep with 53 seconds left in the second OT and also hit another earlier in the period after also making two 3-pointers late in regulation on the way to 28 points.

James scored 12 points in the two OT periods and recorded his third triple-double of the season and 110th of his career. Davis added 29 points and 13 rebounds.

Klay Thompson hit a tying 3 with 5.9 seconds remaining in the initial overtime and another late in the second extra period before fouling out with 1:14 left in Golden State’s first double-OT game since a 143-141 victory against Atlanta on Jan. 2, 2023.

Davis returned after an injury scare in the third. He made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go in regulation, then missed the first of two with 14.7 seconds left — giving Golden State the ball down 118-116. Curry drove through the paint for a tying layup with just under 6 seconds

left to force overtime.

“I might comment on the free throws that they shot, but my mom is here right now and I want to be on my best behavior so I’m not going to comment on their 43 free throws to our 16,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “I’m not going to comment on Steph shooting three free throws in

Curry notched his second straight game with six or more 3s and third in five and also his fifth consecutive game with 25 or more points. It was his third 40-point performance this season and 65th of his career.

James and Davis combined to shoot 14 for 19 in the first half and wound up 25 of 49 for the night and contributed to a 55-50 rebounding edge.

The Warriors scored a season high points and their 23 3-pointers were a season best. Golden State used its 15th starting lineup — with Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga on the floor for the opening tip together for the first time this season.

This was a second straight heartbreaking defeat for the Warriors after losing 134-133 to Sacramento on Thursday night in another 2023 playoff rematch. The Warriors eliminated the Kings in Game 7 of their first-round matchup.

Kuminga followed up his career-best 31-point performance Thursday with 22 points and has scored 20 or more points in a career-best six straight games.

Top 10 in-game dunkers in NBA history

Shawn Kemp

Shawn Kemp, known in the basketball world as "Reign Man," redefined the art of dunking with his extraordinary ability. Kemp's dunks were not just scoring maneuvers but electrifying performances that left fans and opponents in awe. With a combination of raw power and graceful

athleticism, Kemp turned the dunk into an exhibition of dominance and excitement in the 1990s NBA.

Kemp's approach to the rim was a spectacle of anticipation. As he took off, it was as if he harnessed a force of nature, unleashing it with each thunderous slam. His dunks were characterized by their ferocity and the sheer physicality he exhibited, overpowering defenders with ease. The

force with which Kemp dunked was so immense that it often seemed as if he was not just scoring, but making a statement.

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama draws Kareem Abdul-Jabbar comparison from Lakers legend

Story by Eva Geitheim

Seven games into his career and Victor Wembanyama is already earning comparisons to NBA legends — including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, according to one Los Angeles Lakers legend. Former member of the Showtime Lakers and 5x NBA champion Michael Cooper found similarities between

the San Antonio Spurs rookie and his former teammate, Abdul-Jabbar.

“Young man is so long, he would be a player that I could not guard,” Cooper told Trill Withers. “There was only one unstoppable shot in the NBA. That was the sky hook. The Houston Rockets tried to double and triple team Kareem and Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar] was always gonna get that

shot off if he wanted to. But if you double and triple team, Kareem was always looking for that open player. [Wemby] for me is in that category. He has an unstoppable shot … The young man has a jump shot. Who’s gonna get up there and block his jumper? Nobody,” via NBA Legends

Lounge.

Michael Cooper’s comments should not be taken for granted given he’s a former Defensive Player of the Year and played alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for 11 years. At seven-foot-four, Wembanyama’s even taller than Abdul-Jabbar, who stood at seven-foot-two.

However, the Indiana Pacers had some success guarding Wembanyama Monday night, holding the Spurs rookie to 13 points, his second-lowest point total of the season. Even more incredible, Pacers power forward Isaiah Jackson somehow managed to block his “unstoppable” shot at the

rim during Indiana’s 152-111 win.

Through seven games, Victor Wembanyama has averaged 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. Wembanyama and the Spurs take on the New York Knicks next.

Bronny James’ Retail-Launched Nike Basketball Jersey Marks New Peak For The NIL Era

Bronny James Expected To Cash In Big Time After Becoming One Of Nike’s First College Athletes To Launch A Jersey In The NIL Era

© Provided by Afrotech

Story by Kyra Alessandrini

Bronny James official Trojans jersey was released by Nike last week. The 19-year-old is the first men’s college basketball athlete to have his gear sold to the public.

Nike has made available James’ jersey in both home and away styles, which retail at $90 at Dick’s Sporting Goods. It features his name and No. 6 on the back. The release comes after James’ official Nike short-sleeved t-shirt quickly sold-out last September.

Brands have sold NCAA athletes’ jerseys without their names attached, which benefited the brand, vendor and school, according to Boardroom. Having an official sponsor such as Nike release officially embossed jerseys may change that.

Since 2021, student-athletes have been able to monetize their fame through name, image and likeness deals. James heads NIL basketball estimates with a valuation of just under $6 million, according to On3The basketball star has been featured in advertisements for brands such as

Beats by Dre, where he has appeared with his father, LeBron James.

The USC Trojans aren’t the only basketball player to have his official jersey sold this season. Merchandise for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, as well as recent Nike NIL signees Paige Bueckers and JuJu Watkins will also be available for purchase.

The news comes as Bronny is recovering from cardiac arrest, which occurred during team practice in July. After undergoing surgery, a representative for the James family disclosed he has a congenital heart defect.

LeBron recently shared an update on his son’s health. The USC athlete is set to undertake a medical exam later this month in the hopes of clearing him to practice and ultimately appear in this season’s games.

“Things are going in the right direction with Bronny’s progress,” LeBron James said on Monday, according to ESPN“He’s doing rehab. Every week, he gets to do more and more and more. We have a big moment at the end of this month to see if we can continue to go forward. If he’s

cleared, we’ll be not too long away from him being back on the floor and back with his teammates and practicing, with the notion of being back on the floor and playing in game situations.”

USC basketball: LeBron James’ son Bronny reveals favorite NBA player of all-time

USC basketball: LeBron James’ son Bronny reveals favorite NBA player of all-time

Story by Nick Meyer

Hopes are high for the USC basketball team heading into the 2023-2024 season. With a star-studded recruiting class led by LeBron James’s son Bronny and other high caliber prospects, the question is whether or not Bronny James will reach the bar set by his legendary father.

Recently, Bronny James made an appearance at a USC basketball event, but there was a major catch. Bronny’s famous father hinted at his son’s return with an epic “storm” warning for fans and opponents alike.

On the day before Halloween, Bronny revealed the lighter side of his personality when he was asked about his favorite NBA basketball player of all-time.

LeBron James is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,721 points. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is second with 38,387 points and Karl Malone is third with 36,928 points. LeBron James passed Abdul-Jabbar last year at Crypto.com Arena in Los Anegeles.

The USC basketball team’s 2023 recruiting class ranked third in the nation and included Bronny James, a 6-foot-3, 190 pound guard from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California.

While considerably smaller than his famous father, Bronny James is a physical, athletic and strong combo guard with the ability to attack the rim with strength and skill.

Bronny will have a battle on his hands for playing time with USC basketball in 2023-2024. Top recruit and point guard prospect Isaiah Collier is the anticipated starter at point guard while James is expected to battle holdover shooting guard Boogie Ellis for playing time. Ellis averaged 17.7

points per game last season for Coach Andy Enfield’s team.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver goes viral as fans mock In-Season Tournament courts

NBA commissioner Adam Silver goes viral as fans mock In-Season Tournament courts

Story by Jackson Stone

This season, Adam Silver and the NBA decided to try out something new with the addition of the In-Season tournament, which is starting this week. Fans had long lamented how seemingly boring and inconsequential the NBA season was up until around Christmas, which prompted the

decision by Silver and company to try to spice things up by having players compete for the In-Season tournament trophy.

One change that accompanied the addition of the tournament was each team coming up with an alternate court design to use during tournament home games, many of which feature bright colors that are quite the jolt, or assault, to the senses.

Fans recently took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to express their thoughts on the changes.

Some users noted just how bright the courts were.

The Indiana Pacers had an extremely, shall we say, interesting design.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- — Wings are a valued commodity in the NBA because of the versatility they present on both ends of the floor. Pesky defense by players within the 6’5”-6’8” profile, wingspans that can stretch for miles, and varied offensive skill sets that don’t make them a negative on

the other end of the

floor — many games have been won with that unique blend of two-way versatility.

The Golden State Warriors have one wing who falls short of what traditionally constitutes as wing height. At 6’3”, Gary Payton II is a pesky wing in a guard’s body. He sometimes moonlights as a big because of his ability to set screens, roll to the rim, and finish up close:

But while Payton’s height places a proverbial ceiling on his versatility as a switch-everything piece, take a look instead at what his wingspan is — 6’8”.

Being a plus-5 in terms of wingspan (that is, his wingspan is five inches longer than his height) is a massive boon for his ability to make life a living hell for ball handlers at the point of attack. Off the ball, passing to an area where he lurks nearby is ripe for Payton to jump the passing

lane and intercept the pass.

Late against the Warriors’ thrilling 141-139 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder — their first win of the In-Season Tournament — Payton flashed the skills on defense that once garnered him the distinction of one of the league’s premier perimeter stoppers.

11/3/23

Steph Curry Steal & No-Look Lob to Gary Payton II

Kingkaps7 GIF

A recap of what Payton did above:

He ran the floor and deflected a Josh Giddey pass to the corner, preventing what could have been a transition bucket and allowing the Warriors to reset their defense.

As he tries to switch onto Luguentz Dort without the seeing the ball, he instinctively turns around and deflects the pass intended for Chet Holmgren in the corner.

He switches onto Giddey, sits on Giddey’s spin, and gets his hands on the ball to force a jump ball — which he went on to win.

In a nutshell of a possession, Payton displayed exactly why a healthy version of himself is a valuable cog in the Warriors’ defensive machinery — arguably its second most important behind Draymond Green.

Payton is a defensive playmaker of the highest level, but Green is the ultimate defensive organizer and floor general. When the two are on the floor, offenses will almost always be made to work hard to score a bucket.

The difficulty level ramps up for opponents simply because of Green’s prescience — seeing things before they happen. When the Thunder intend to hunt Steph Curry on a half-court possession, Green immediately diagnoses the situation, sniffs out the Thunder’s intentions, and executes

the proper countermeasures:

The Payton stop and forced turnover on Jalen Williams is the cherry on top, but what makes this possible in the first place is Green preventing the Thunder from hunting Curry by “pre-switching” Curry off of Cason Wallace. This results in Green being involved in the ball-screen action

instead of Curry.

Once Williams sees that Green will be the one involved instead of Curry, he waves off the screen and chooses to isolate against Payton instead — a matchup the Warriors will take any day.

The Green and Payton connection was also present during a crucial offensive stretch. Although he’s been shooting the three at an above-league-average rate on a small sample size this season, defenses have often elected to ignore Payton on the perimeter. The lack of perceived spacing

threat means that Payton either has to take those open shots — something defenses will have no problem doing no matter the result — or he has to be in a spot that takes advantage of his other skills and allows him to feast on the attention that Curry garners.

Curry makes two non-spacers work because of the threat of his shooting, but a middleman is necessary for the ball to find its way to the Warriors’ play finishers off of created advantages. Green has played that role for the nearly a decade — and he hasn’t lost a step in that regard.

When Green “keeps” the ball instead of handing it off to Curry, the Thunder defense suddenly find themselves with a backline numbers disadvantage — with Payton parked in the dunker spot instead of spacing out:

Even at a generous 6’6” with a 7’1” wingspan, Green profiles more as a four who occasionally moonlights as a five, instead of being considered a bona fide wing. But his ability to switch across the positional spectrum gives him the chops to defend like a versatile wing.

The Warriors are fond of switching everything with a smaller lineup — that is, whenever Green is slotted in at the five. With Kevon Looney and Dario Šarić having trouble against a fast Thunder team with a legitimate stretch center in Holmgren, Kerr was compelled to close the game with

Green sliding up a position.

This meant every screen was to be switched in an effort to keep things in front, to prevent dribble penetration as much as possible, and to bleed the shot clock long enough for the Thunder to resort to a stagnant, less-than-ideal shot attempt in terms of success rate and efficiency.

Thompson — a 6’6” wing with a 6’9” wingspan — is another important cog in the switching machine. He switches onto Holmgren after Green cuts off Wallace, stays in front, and forces another reset.

Thompson then switches onto Giddey and forces the tough late-clock shot — and goes on to drill the three on the other end:

When Green gets switched onto the smaller Wallace later on, he tracks the drive using a blend of lateral movement, length, and anticipation — tools he has used throughout his tenure as arguably the league’s best defender:

It wasn’t just Payton, Green, and Thompson who positively contributed — the entire wing room had their own moments against the Thunder.

Jonathan Kuminga bucked a mediocre first half to finish the game with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He was part of the Chris-Paul-led bench crew that kept the Warriors within striking distance and cut what was once a seven-point Thunder lead to a tied game at the end of the third

quarter.

(That lineup — Paul, Moses Moody, Payton, Kuminga, and Šarić — outscored the Thunder by six points in 10 minutes.)

After Moody used every bit of his 7’1” wingspan to douse the flames of a red-hot Dort, Kuminga and Paul paired up for some transition ball-screen action. The Thunder try to switch the screen, but Isaiah Joe finds himself on the wrong end of the switch onto Kuminga, which gives him the

lane to roll toward the rim, with Paul finding him with a nifty pocket pass:

(AP Photo/Nate Billings)

Kuminga’s defense was also of note, despite some booboos and mistakes (which included a failed switch onto Dort on a sideline out-of-bounds set that led to free throws). This seal on Vasilije Micić as a result of running the floor in transition, followed by a successful stop against Williams,

is the quintessential Kuminga two-way-wing experience: 6’8” height, 6’11” wingspan, and the athleticism and physicality to go along with it:

Moody hit both of his threes during the bench-unit run, both of which reclaimed the lead for the Warriors and maintained pressure on the Thunder to respond:

Last, but certainly not the least, was Andrew Wiggins, whose 17-point performance on 6-of-11 shooting is what most will point to when it comes to the box score. But it’s his four offensive rebounds that are more of note.

Wiggins hasn’t had the best start to the season. He’s averaging only 12.3 points on a 45/15/64 shooting split. His scoring efficiency has dipped: 50.2% True Shooting.

More notably, he hasn’t been rebounding the ball. His total rebounding rate of 4.4% is on track to be a career low, as well as his offensive rebounding rate (2.5%) and defensive rebounding rate (6.2%).

Wiggins grabbed *only* five rebounds against the Thunder, but it was a step in the right direction in terms of effort on the boards:

But for the Warriors to truly return to who they were two seasons ago, they’ll need more than just a spurt of improved effort from Wiggins — they’ll need the version who was arguably the second-best player on a championship team.

Until that version resurfaces, the Warriors’ wing room will collectively continue to step up to carry the load.

PHOENIX -- — The San Antonio Spurs were flailing in the fourth quarter Thursday night, struggling to find their footing after the Phoenix Suns erased a 27-point lead and threatened to finish an epic comeback victory.

Instead, Victor Wembanyama took over.

It's probably not the last time that will happen.

The 19-year-old rookie scored a season-high 38 points, Zach Collins added 19 and the Spurs held off Phoenix 132-121 on Thursday night.

The Suns erased a 27-point deficit, tying it at 116 with 4:21 left on Keita Bates-Diop's 3-pointer, but the Spurs responding by scoring the next 12 points, including 10 from the precocious Wembanyama.

“Someone's got to do it,” Wembanyama said. “Tomorrow it might be one of my teammates.”

In just his fifth NBA game, Wembanyama produced a handful of highlight plays, including flying down the lane for a dunk in the second quarter. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman shot 15 of 26 from the field and had 10 rebounds.

“He's a multi-faceted player — he'll pass to the open guy,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He's got confidence in himself. He made some plays that were unbelievable. That combination is pretty good.”

But it was his poise down the stretch that might have been most impressive. The 19-year-old forward hit a 3-pointer, made three free throws, dunked and hit an 18-foot jumper during the decisive run.

“Every game, we try to find the sweet spot where we need to hurt them,” Wembanyama said. “Today it might be this way, tomorrow it might be someone else. It’s how great teams work.”

Phoenix's Devin Booker returned from a sprained ankle and nearly had a triple double with 31 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. But it wasn't enough for the Suns, who had 14 turnovers. Kevin Durant had 28 points.

It was the second time in three days the Spurs beat the Suns in Phoenix. San Antonio shocked Phoenix 115-114 on Tuesday night, erasing a 20-point deficit and scoring the winning basket after Keldon Johnson stole the ball from Durant in the final seconds and made a contested layup

with 1.2 seconds left.

On Thursday, it looked as if San Antonio would win in a blowout.

The Spurs led 13-0 after the Suns missed their first five shots and never trailed. San Antonio pushed its advantage to 27 points midway through the second quarter, taking advantage of sloppy Phoenix play on both ends of the floor.

The Spurs led 75-55 at the break after Wembanyama hit back-to-back 3s late in the second quarter.

“The NBA's got the greatest athletes on Earth,” Wembanyama said. “But so far, it's working out pretty well.”

Booker made a 3-pointer that cut it to 14 points going into the fourth quarter. The Suns continued their methodical push throughout the fourth Bates-Diop's dunk on an assist from Booker cut it to 111-108 with 6:04 left.

“We came out and fought in the second half,” Booker said. ”Now we're going to try and put two halves together so we can play a complete game."

Victor Wembanyama joins teenaged LeBron James, Kevin Durant with all-time feat in Spurs’ win over Suns

11/2/23

Story by Jedd Pagaduan

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, many believed that it would take time for the 19-year old Frenchman to develop into one of the most impactful players in the league, citing issues with efficiency and issues with

dealing with physicality. But on Thursday night, Wembanyama put all those concerns to bed with an outstanding performance against Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns.

Wembanyama was already having an excellent game after he put up 20 points in the first half against the Suns on Thursday night. But he took his game to the next level in the fourth quarter with the Suns threatening to pull an UNO reverse card on the Spurs and come back from a 20-

point deficit. He finished with 38 points, 10 rebounds, one steal, and two blocks on 15-26 shooting from the field, 3-6 from deep, and 5-6 from the foul line.

And in doing so, Victor Wembanyama became just the third teenager in NBA history to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks in a single game. The Spurs rookie joined who else but LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the only players aged 19 or younger to pull off this

incredible feat.

James pulled off this feat way back on November 11, 2004 as a sophomore for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer, back when he was just 19 years old, dropped 38 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks in a five-point win against the Seven Seconds or Less Suns.

Meanwhile, Kevin Durant accomplished this feat on April 16, 2008, as he dropped an eye-popping 42 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks against the Golden State Warriors as a 19-year old.

This company is as elite as it’s going to get for Victor Wembanyama, and it also shows just how unique his skillset is for his size. LeBron James and Durant stand at “only” 6’8 and 6’10, respectively, with the Spurs rookie towering over both of them by around eight to 10 inches.

This also bodes well for Wembanyama’s chances of developing into a title-winning team centerpiece for the Spurs, similar to how James and Durant have been for most of their careers.

LOS ANGELES -- — LeBron James had 35 points and 11 rebounds, Austin Reaves scored seven of his 15 points in overtime and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 130-125 victory Wednesday night.

D'Angelo Russell scored 27 points and Anthony Davis had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the short-handed Lakers, who beat their local rivals for the first time since July 2020 in the Florida bubble. The 17-time NBA champion Lakers hadn’t beaten the Clippers on the Lakers' home court at

their shared arena since Christmas 2016, also losing 11 in a row.

“That was known,” Reaves said about the skids. “But at the same time, for me, and I (think) I speak for everybody, you want to win every game.”

With James Harden watching in street clothes on the Clippers' bench, Kawhi Leonard scored 38 points in their second loss of the young season. Paul George scored 20 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, including eight points in the final minute, before fouling out 30 seconds into

overtime.

Paul George Fouls Out in Overtime

“We played hard,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “We just didn’t play smart at times. (Poor) shot selection, and (we needed to) keep our turnovers down a little bit. I can’t fault the effort.”

Although the Lakers used just eight players due to five significant injury absences, they rallied from an early 19-point deficit before blowing an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds of regulation.

George, who had six 3-pointers, hit three free throws with 17 seconds left to tie it. Russell had an open shot at the buzzer, but missed.

The Lakers took a five-point lead in overtime when Reaves stole the ball from Leonard, drove the court and flung an alley-oop to James for a one-handed slam with 2:12 left.

Leonard answered with a three-point play and his fifth 3-pointer, but Reaves hit two free throws with 48 seconds left and Russell Westbrook missed a tying 3-point attempt before Christian Wood threw down a vicious putback dunk for the Lakers with nine seconds to play.

Westbrook scored 24 points against his former team.

“It’s just been a process this year of us figuring each other out as a group,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said."

P.J. Tucker played 21 scoreless minutes in his debut with the Clippers, who officially acquired him and Harden earlier in the day in a multi-player trade with Philadelphia. Harden will ramp up to playing shape during the next four days before the Clippers' next game, but the team is

PHOENIX -- — Keldon Johnson stripped Kevin Durant and made a contested layup with 1.2 seconds left to give the Spurs their only lead of the game and a 115-114 victory over the stunned Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.

The Spurs, who trailed by as many as 20 points, broke a nine-game losing streak against Phoenix.

Johnson had 27 points to lead San Antonio, which outscored the Suns 33-19 in the fourth quarter. The Spurs were coming off a 40-point loss to the Clippers on Sunday in Los Angeles.

After rookie Victor Wembanyama's dunk cut the lead to one, the Spurs trapped Durant in the corner.

“They responded great,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, referring to the blowout in the previous game. “They kept playing through it. We made a gazillion mistakes, but it’s a game of mistakes. We kept playing and that’s the best thing. I was really proud of them.”

Durant led Phoenix with 26 points. Eric Gordon scored 20, Grayson Allen had 19 on 5 of 7 shooting from 3-point range for the Suns, who played without injured starting guards Bradley Beal and Devin Booker.

In what may have been the best game of the young NBA season so far, the Phoenix Suns suffered a stunning loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, getting outscored 33-14 in the fourth quarter to fall 115-114.

The loss was the result of a controversial play at the end of regulation, when Suns star Kevin Durant was stripped of the ball. Durant appeared to have been fouled on the play, which gave the Spurs their only lead of the game:

Suns coach Frank Vogel was upset afterward, and he made it clear that he didn’t like the no-call:

Said Vogel, “They fouled him. The refs didn’t call it.”

Whether it should have been a foul or not is up for debate, but what isn’t debatable is that the Spurs didn’t quit down the stretch of this game. Keldon Johnson, Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell combined to score 25 in the fourth quarter and steal a win away from Phoenix.

For the Suns, Kevin Durant led the way with 26 points, including a high-degree-of-difficulty fadeaway over Wembanyama. Durant surpassed 27,000 career points in the game. Eric Gordon had 20, and Grayson Allen chipped in 19 for the Suns.

Up next for the Phoenix Suns, a day off before the two teams play a rematch from Phoenix. The way this one ended, it wouldn’t be surprising to see play get a little chippy between the two teams. No word yet if Suns stars Devin Booker or Bradley Beal will be available to play in that

game, though coach Vogel didn’t give a firm timetable earlier Tuesday.

Popovich called a timeout 53 seconds into the game after Durant’s fastbreak dunk made it 4-0. It didn’t help much as Phoenix went on to lead 27-18 at the end of the quarter. Durant had 10 points in the period, finishing with a step-back jumper as time was running out. The Spurs shot

29% from the field in the quarter and made just 1 of 11 from 3-point range.

Phoenix led 63-45 at halftime and 95-82 after three quarters before the Spurs rallied.

Before the game, Vogel said “there’s no timetable” for the return of Booker (left ankle sprain) and Bradley Beal (low back spasms).

“They’re working very hard to get back as soon as possible,” Vogel said, noting that they have resumed some on-court activities in practice.

Why Victor Wembanyama ‘landed in the right place’ with the Spurs, per Magic Johnson

7/24/23

Story by Jedd Pagaduan

In the lead-up to the 2023 NBA Draft lottery, the San Antonio Spurs looked far and away the most appealing destination for generational prospect Victor Wembanyama, the 7’4 physical anomaly who, if he develops right, will drastically change the way the game is played. After all, with

legendary head coach Gregg Popovich at the helm, the Spurs have managed to bring out the best in two big men taken first overall in David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Even the arguable greatest point guard of all time, Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, agrees with the notion that Wembanyama, indeed, found himself in the best-case scenario by landing with Popovich and the Spurs.

“[Wembanyama] landed at the right place because Popovich has already developed Tony [Parker], [Manu] Ginobili, guys who are international players and he knows what to do with those types of guys,” Johnson said on an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio.

At the very least, there’s a guarantee that Victor Wembanyama is in a healthy environment that should help expedite his development for the rebuilding Spurs. Magic Johnson, like most students of the game, know just how tantalizing the young Frenchman’s physical tools and feel for the

game are, which should make him one of the best players in the league sooner than later.

“What is he, 7’3, 7’4, can handle the rock like he a six-footer? He can run the floor like a deer. […] Wait a minute, is this man really that long? I said, ‘Wow.’ Shoot from the three-point line, basketball IQ is off the charts,” Johnson added.

With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Victor Wembanyama could rest easy knowing that the Spurs have nothing but his best interest in mind.

LOS ANGELES -- — When Kevin Durant scored in the final minutes, LeBron James answered. These two generational basketball greats put on a scintillating duel in their first head-to-head matchup in nearly five years.

Although Durant was better in the first three quarters, he eventually had to concede he couldn't do it alone.

James didn't have to.

Anthony Davis had 30 points and 13 rebounds, James scored 10 of his 21 points while playing the entire fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Lakers blew past Phoenix in the final minutes for a 100-95 victory over the short-handed Suns on Thursday night.

James made the tiebreaking layup with 1:11 to play for the Lakers, who rallied from a 12-point deficit entering the fourth to get their first victory of the new season in the home opener of James' 21st NBA campaign.

The 35-year-old Durant finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds while moving into 12th place on the NBA's career scoring list.

But James, who reigns atop that list, stepped up with back-to-back layups in the final 90 seconds to seize the win in another memorable meeting.

“We've had so many battles, (and) we don't have many matchups left,” the 38-year-old James said. “Not sure how many we have left, so you don't ever want to take it for granted when you're out there with such a great player, one of the best to ever play this game. It's always a treat. It's fun.”

LeBron, KD embrace after first matchup since 2018

Kevin Durant is hyped to go up against LeBron James tonight

Durant nearly carried the Suns to an improbable victory with no help from injured Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but James was ever-so-slightly more clutch while also adding nine assists and eight rebounds.

“There were a few moments where you just appreciate what the fans are watching,” said Phoenix coach Frank Vogel, who has coached both superstars. “Two of the game’s greats just going head to head. Some collisions out there. The level of competition for Game 2 of the NBA season

was super-high. Felt like a playoff game out there. A boxing match. A slugfest. ... To see those two guys out there fighting for it was pretty special.”

Durant and James have been friends since Durant’s senior year of high school 17 years ago, but they improbably hadn’t faced each other on an NBA court since Christmas 2018. Injuries, load management and health and safety protocols prevented them from playing in the previous 13

meetings between James’ Lakers and Durant’s Warriors, Nets and Suns.

“Someone you just compare yourself to,” Durant said. “If you could accomplish and achieve some of the stuff that he’s done, you’re doing pretty solid for yourself. It’s just a baseline for yourself as a player to see how great you can be.”

While James was good, he wasn't totally responsible for how the Suns flailed down the stretch without Booker or Beal to take the focus off Durant. Phoenix led 84-72 entering the fourth, but missed 13 of its next 14 shots and committed 10 turnovers in the next 10 minutes.

Durant still tied it at 91 with 1:28 to play by scoring on two straight possessions. With his final bucket, he passed Hakeem Olajuwon for 12th place on the scoring list.

But James replied with two baskets sandwiching a missed 3-pointer by Durant. Austin Reaves and Davis hit free throws in the final seconds to ice it for LA.

On Thursday night, one of the most anticipated matchups in the NBA will see Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns heading to the City of Angels to take on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.

James is entering his third NBA decade with the Lakers determined to limit his minutes for health optimization, yet Los Angeles struggled mightily whenever James was off the court in the first half. James and coach Darvin Ham decided to throw out the plan for one night because the

Lakers had all of their timeouts to maximize the freshness of James, who said he felt great after playing only 23 minutes in the first three quarters.

“It was tough,” Durant said. “He was pretty much coaching the team on how to guard certain actions. That’s what he’s been doing his whole career. ... It’s always a battle playing against high-IQ players like that.”

Eric Gordon added 15 points in Suns coach Vogel's first trip back to face the Lakers, who fired him 18 months ago after three seasons and one NBA title.

Booker sat out with left foot soreness after tweaking his foot late in his 28-point performance against Golden State on Tuesday. Beal still hasn't made his Suns debut due to lower back tightness.

SAN ANTONIO -- — Luka Doncic had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and the Dallas Mavericks spoiled the NBA debut of No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama, beating the San Antonio Spurs 126-119 on Wednesday night.

“It was fun,” Doncic said. “We knew the whole building was going to be loud. He’s probably one of the best prospects to enter the NBA. It was fun. For me, personally, I love challenges. So, that was a fun challenge.”

Dallas forced two turnovers in the final minute to preserve the victory. Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving added 22 points and Grant Williams added 17 points in the season opener for both teams.

“It was a hall of fame performance like (Doncic) does almost every night,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “He was great. Kyrie wasn’t bad either. So, the two future hall of famers got us.”

Doncic was cleared to play an hour before tipoff after being listed as questionable with a left calf sprain, and the All-Star guard played 32 minutes.

Devin Vassell had 23 points to lead San Antonio. Keldon Johnson added 17 and Wembanyama had 15 points.

Wembanyama scored nine points in the final seven minutes after struggling with foul trouble in the fourth quarter. The rookie was 6 for 9 from the field and had five rebounds and two assists and a block in 23 minutes.

“One of the toughest things for a player is you get into foul trouble,” Popovich said. “You never get in a rhythm and you’re in and out of the game and that sort of thing. So, I thought his maturity showed even at a young age where he came in with the last, I think, seven minutes and just

played.”

Luka Stops on a Dime to Sink and-1, Reach 30 points

The Spurs started quickly, outscoring the Mavericks 43-36 in the opening quarter. San Antonio shot 6 for 12 on 3-pointers and shot 62% from the field.

Dallas responded by controlling the second half.

“We just locked down on it,” Dallas rookie center Dereck Lively II said. “We feel like there were a lot of long rebounds (and) a lot of missed opportunities. There was miscommunication (and) a lot of back door cuts and cuts to the rim. I feel as the game went on, we were just making sure

we were locked down on that so that we could be able to walk out with a win.”

Luka Steals and Deals to Secure Triple-Double

Wembanyama dazzled in the preseason, but he never battled foul trouble as he did against the Mavericks.

“For me, it was just a matter of being physical,” Williams said. “Make sure he doesn’t get to his spots, making sure that any shot that he takes you challenge and you swipe so you affect the shot even down low. Just playing with great energy and physicality so he feels off balance a little

bit.”

And Dallas took advantage.

Wembanyama was forced to exit after picking up his fourth foul with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter on a touch foul while attempting to set a pick on Derrick Jones Jr.

The Mavericks took their first lead 37 seconds later at 73-72 on a layup by Lively.

Lively had 10 points in the third as Dallas outscored San Antonio 32-23.

Wembanyama returned midway through the fourth quarter and quickly scored seven points to electrify the crowd. His first bucket came on an alley-oop that rolled over the rim, and he punctuated the run with a thunderous dunk.

“As I said before, we’re learning. It’s only our first regular season game together,” Wembanyama said. “We’re going to watch film and maybe this happened, but if we notice it on the film, the coaches and ourselves, the players will make whatever it takes to get better.”

The season opener between the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks will see the first battle between Luka Doncic and Victor Wembanyama.

The Slovenian superstar had high praise for the French big man and what he can do on the floor, with Wembanyama being a generational talent and the next big thing in the league.

"It's pretty crazy what he does on the court," Luka Doncic said about Wembanyama, via Sports Illustrated. "What's he -- 2 meters [tall]? Oh, 7-4? No, the things he does for that length, it's unbelievable the way he moves, the way he handles the ball, shoots the ball, and

Luka Doncic made history against the Spurs

Luka Doncic wasn’t even sure if he will suit up in the game against the Spurs due to a left calf sprain. Fortunately, Mavs team physicians gave him the go-signal to play one hour before tip-off. Doncic never showed signs of the injury as he recorded his first triple-double of the 2023-24 NBA season.

The Spurs led for majority of the game behind the exploits of Devin Vassell (23 points), Keldon Johnson (17 points), and Tre Jones (16 points). However, the Mavs took the lead for the first time when Dereck Lively made a layup in the third quarter.

The Spurs held a precarious one-point lead 119-118 after Devin Vassell made both of his free-throw attempts. However, the Mavs scored the next seven points to put the game out of reach. Luka Doncic scored on one of his patented step-back three-pointers to cap off the scoring.

Luka Doncic’s Herculean effort spoiled the NBA debut of the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama. Although the latter scored 15 points, he was saddled with foul trouble for the most part.

The Mavs won just 38 games last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in four years. Luka Doncic is off to a rip-roaring start and that bodes well for the Mavs’ playoff aspirations in 2023-24.

Browns’ Myles Garrett doing his best LeBron James impersonation in Cavs crossover

Story by Peter Sampson

Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett has purchased a minority ownership stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Shams Charania Athletic.

‘NFL-NBA news: Cleveland Browns All-Pro Myles Garrett has purchased a minority stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will also serve as an official Cavaliers brand ambassador.’

It’s not known exactly how much of a stake Garrett has purchased in the Cavs, but Garrett is known as a huge basketball fan who plays frequently. He participated in the NBA’s All-Star Celebrity Game when the Cavs hosted the event in 2022.

In a statement released Wednesday, Cavs Chairman and Governor Dan Gilbert said that the team was honored to welcome Garrett into the ownership group:

“As a leader on and off the field, Myles has become a Cleveland icon and shares in our organization’s commitment to being a transformative force for good across the region,” Gilbert said. “We are honored to welcome this long-time friend of the team as our new partner and investor.

Myles’ passion and commitment to the city he loves will allow us to reach new communities and continue to build the successful future of this franchise.”

Garrett also expressed his excitement about joining the Cavaliers’ ownership group:

“I have admired the Cavaliers organization’s hard work, tenacity and dedication to the community since my early days in Cleveland,” said Garrett. “To have the opportunity to join this impressive and purpose-filled franchise, under Dan’s leadership, is truly a dream come true.”

In 2021, fellow Cleveland sports legend LeBron James seemingly paved the way for Garrett into minority ownership in different leagues when he joined Fenway Sports Group as a partner, giving him an ownership stake in subsidiaries that include the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool Football

Club, Roush Fenway Racing and the regional sports network NESN.

Myles Garrett isn’t just thriving off the field, he had sports fans buzzing on Sunday with a dominant game against the Indianapolis Colts that saw him become the first player since at least 2000 with multiple sacks, multiple forced fumbles, and a blocked kick.

DENVER -- — The bling and the banner were nice. What the Denver Nuggets really relished, though, was opening defense of the franchise's first NBA title with a 119-107 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

“We can't think about last year too much,” Jamal Murray said after the Nuggets followed the raising of their championship banner by dropping the hammer on the Lakers in the NBA's season opener, which featured Nikola Jokic's triple-double and LeBron James taking a few more breathers

than normal.

Nuggets fans chant 'Who's your daddy' to the Lakers

Jokic said the Nuggets fed off the emotion from the pregame ceremony to jump out to an early 18-point lead, which held up even after the Lakers got within three points in the fourth quarter.

“I think we controlled the game the whole time,” said Jokic, who had 29 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.

Murray added 21 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 20, Aaron Gordon had 15 and Michael Porter Jr. had 12.

All of LA's starters also scored in double figures, led by James' 21 points in 29 minutes — his playing time is being monitored at the start of his 21st season.

“It helps,” Murray said with a smile.

LeBron James’ embarrassing fall on Reggie Jackson fake leaves Lakers, NBA fans arguing

Kingkaps7 GIF
Was LeBron James faked? Or did he simply trip on a shoe?

Jamal Murray drove along the baseline before dishing a pass to Reggie Jackson in the corner. Jackson pumped faked and James hit the deck.

From the view of the TV camera, it looks like James got faked out. However, the live broadcast showed a closer look, and James actually stepped on Jackson’s shoe. This caused him to lose balance and fall backwards. In the eyes of Denver fans though, LeBron’s ankles got broken.

James ended up playing about five fewer minutes than he's used to.

“I mean, I always want to be on the floor,” James said, “especially when you got an opportunity to win a game or feel like you can make an impact. But I guess there's a system in place and I'll follow it.”

James, the league's oldest player at age 38, stressed, “I'm not surprised or upset” about the Lakers monitoring his minutes as the season gets going.

Taurean Prince scored 18 points his his debut for the Lakers, his fifth team in nine seasons. Anthony Davis had 17 points, Austin Reaves 14 and D'Angelo Russell 11.

The Lakers trailed by 18 early but trimmed that deficit to 63-54 at halftime and used a 13-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to pull within 87-84 before Aaron Gordon stopped the run with a 3-pointer.

The Lakers never got closer.

Austin Reaves' steal leads to a thunderous flush on other end

After James' basket got Los Angeles within 103-96 with just over five minutes remaining, the Nuggets called timeout and came out of it with a 10-3 run featuring 3-pointers by Murray and Porter to put the Lakers away.

“We were trending in the right direction for a while there,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “Each quarter we had given up less and less and then they just kind of blew the game open.”

The Nuggets received their gold, diamond-encrusted championship rings — featuring a mini championship banner that rolls out from one side — in a pregame ceremony. Murray, wearing a microphone, told teammate Gordon, “I might play the first quarter with it!”

Nuggets coach Michael Malone relished one last hurrah over last season's breakthrough before turning his attention entirely to this season.

“Jason of Beverly Hills, I want to thank them for some really nice hardware. And then at that point, I was like, ‘Let’s get the game going,'" Malone said of watching the banner rise to rafters at sold-out, shaking Ball Arena.

JOKIC SNUBBED AND PRAISED

Jokic may have followed up back-to-back MVP seasons by leading the Nuggets to their first NBA title, but TNT left him off its graphic promoting its opening-night doubleheader featuring the Lakers-Nuggets and Suns-Warriors games.

The graphic featured LeBron James, Stephen CurryKevin Durant and Jayson Tatum — the last an odd choice given that the Celtics don't play until Wednesday night. The slight upset Charles Barkley, the co-host of TNT's “Inside the NBA,” who apologized to the Nuggets and their fans for

the omission.

That said, Barkley opined in a pregame interview that he thinks the Nuggets will have a tough time repeating.

“I think they're in the mix. I'm a big Bruce Brown fan,” Barkley said of the starting small forward who signed a two-year, $45 million contract with the Indiana Pacers following Denver's title run. “They gotta replace him and the young guys gotta come on, and they're going to have to

adjust to being the hunted."

Suns’ Kevin Durant gets 100% real about relationship with Warriors fans amid return to Bay Area

The 2023-24 NBA season officially kicked off on Tuesday. Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant got a chance to rekindle his days with the Golden State Warriors on the first day of the regular season. KD told the media after the game he has nothing but love for Dubs fans, per 957 The

Game’s Evan Giddings.

“It’s always good to be recognized for the work you put in so it’s exciting to see people I haven’t seen in a while. Some familiar faces and I feel like the fan base here had nothing but love and respect for me as an individual player and as a person. That’s all I can ask for,” Kevin Durant said.

Kevin Durant’s memorable four-year stint with the Warriors

Durant spent the first 10 seasons of his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder. He joined the Warriors in 2016 remained with the organization for the next four seasons. Behind the exploits of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green,

the Warriors won back-to-back NBA titles in 2017 and 2018.

Durant squared off against the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James in those two memorable NBA Finals series. KD eventually won two straight NBA Finals MVP awards and earned two NBA championship rings with Golden State.

The Warriors teams of Kevin Durant’s era were so good, Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George conceded they’re the best he has ever faced.

“That is by far the toughest Warriors team. That team is up there for the best team that I’ve played,” Paul George quipped in May.

The Warriors reciprocated their love for Durant on Tuesday. They showed a tribute video that included his greatest highlights with Golden State prior to their game against the Suns.

Suns’ Kevin Durant reveals ultimate NBA ownership dream that will please Seattle hoop fans

07/25/23

Story by Nick Meyer

Kevin Durant is one of the biggest NBA stars in recent memory. The Phoenix Suns forward has quietly vaulted his way up to number seven on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and is within striking distance of passing Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant and even Michael Jordan.

The often outspoken Durant slammed a “false narrative” about his game and Steph Curry’s recently. He also revealed vacation plans with Devin Booker showing camaraderie between the two stars.

The Suns’ Durant revealed something surprising recently that Seattle hoops fans will love in an interview with CNBC. Durant said he has ownership plans regarding a possible new franchise in Seattle, most likely a revamping and reimaging of the Sonics.

Durant also shared his take on being a part of an expansion team in Oklahoma City. He noted that there has been an incredible difference in the city between when the franchise first started in 2008-2009 to today.

Durant’s stunning admission comes on the heels of NBA Hall-of-Famer Tracy McGrady’s truth bomb on LeBron James as the next likely owner of an NBA expansion franchise in Las Vegas.  The current Phoenix Suns superstar played 80 games during his Rookie of the Year winning first and only season in Seattle,

scoring 20.3 points per game.

“Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game” - Alton Lister thinks that Shawn Kemp’s famous poster dunk on him was a form of revenge

Kingkaps7 GIF

By

Kemp’s dunk on Lister was icing on the cake for the Sonics big man, who led his team to a 3-1 series victory over the opponents.

Is there any list of the most disrespectful poster dunks in NBA history that doesn't have Shawn Kemp's slam over Alton Lister? The iconic dunk remains etched in the memories of those who got to watch the league in the early 1990s.

It wasn't enough for the former Seattle SuperSonics star to jump through Listerbut the fact that Kemp pointed at his downed rival made the play more unforgettable. Much has been said about the dunk, and Lister also said his piece about it in an interview with ESPN a couple of years ago.

"During my era, I did not back down as a rim protector," Lister said"I was challenged by a lot of players, and sometimes I was successful and other times, not. But Game 4 was a whole different story. Kemp made sure he was going to have a good game, and that's what he did. It was personal for him. That's why he

pointed at me after the dunk."

Revenge from the "Reign Man"

The dunk came during Game 4 of the first-round matchup between the Sonics and the third-seeded Golden State WarriorsThings had been testy between the two sides, with Kemp and Lister already having gone at it in the second game of the series.

LeBron James’ real reason why he wants to own NBA team in Las Vegas

10/9/23

Story by Michael Corvo

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James wants to own a slice of a potential expansion NBA franchise in Las Vegas for a simple reason: Good business.

“It just makes sense,” LeBron said after his 2023-24 preseason debut at the T-Mobile Arena.

The Lakers held on to beat the Brooklyn Nets, 129-126. LeBron finished with 10 points and 5 assists in 17 minutes.

On Sunday, LeBron was among the handful of Lakers on hand to witness the Las Vegas Aces win Game of 1 of the WNBA Finals over the New York Liberty at nearby MichelobULTRA Arena.

“Obviously you have the Raiders here, you have the (Golden Knights) here, you have the Aces here. You got F1 coming very soon,” LeBron noted. “All-Star Weekend has been a few times. You’ve got the NBA Summer League … I think adding an NBA franchise here would just add to the momentum that’s going on in

this town.

“I think it’s only a matter of time, and I hope I’m part of that time.”

One year ago, during a Lakers’ preseason visit to Vegas, LeBron publicly declared his interest in bringing a team to the desert, invoking the commissioner.

“I want a team here Adam, thank you.”

James previously stated his desire to own the expansion team on an episode of “The Shop: Uninterrupted.”

LeBron, a billionaire, owns small stakes in Liverpool FC, the Boston Red Sox, and the Pittsburgh Penguins via a partnership with Fenway Sports Group.

“Vegas has always treated myself and my teammates … with a lot of respect and a lot of love,” LeBron said Monday.

LA Lakers superstar forward LeBron James has long made it known that he would like to become an NBA team owner once he retires. In particular, James reportedly has an interest in owning a potential Las Vegas expansion team. During a recent interview, James was asked why he is so interested in owning a team in

the city. James first spoke about how it makes sense due to Las Vegas' thriving sports economy.

The Lakers star then went on to give some examples of successful Las Vegas sports teams. He also touched on the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is set to take place in November:

"It just makes sense," James said.
"Obviously, you have the Raiders here, you have the Knights here, you have the Aces here, you got F1 coming very soon. You know, All-Star Weekend has been there a few times. We have NBA Summer League, that's very popular. Sports is, it's here."

F1 racing is a massive industry with Liberty Media Corporation, the owner of the Formula One Group, having a whopping $27.19 billion market cap as of 2023. So, it's clear that James has been doing his homework regarding his potential future investment.

After LeBron James pointed out the growing number of thriving Las Vegas sports teams, including the Raiders, Knights and Aces, he then touched on the city's momentum. James said that given the popularity of Las Vegas sports, it wouldn't be hard for an NBA expansion team to amass a fanbase in the city:

"You know, I think adding an NBA franchise here would just add to the momentum that's going on in this town," James said.
"It's an attraction. You don't have to worry about getting fan support or nothing like that."

James then concluded by saying that he believes an expansion team coming to Las Vegas is inevitable at this point:

"I think it's only right. I think it's only a matter of time," James said.

Victor Wembanyama's unprecedented defensive range illustrated in two plays

Wembanyama put on quite a show in his preseason debut on Monday
untitled-design-41.png
 Getty Images

 @victorwembanyma

Victor Wembanyama flashed all the goods in his preseason debut on Monday, finishing with 20 points in 19 minutes against Chet Holmgren and the ThunderHe hit a pair of 3s, hit the offensive glass, sprinted ahead in transition, made a couple high-end passes and self-created his way to the rim finished, where he

finished with both bully-ball power and sublime off-hand finesse. It was total-package stuff.

And this was just the offense, where Wembanyama, relatively speaking, will be a more of a work in progress throughout his rookie season and first career chapter. Defensively, he's ready to dominate right now, and he showed as much on Monday.

Let's look at two plays, one steal and one block, that illustrate the unprecedented defensive range Wemby is bringing to the table.

The first comes early in the first quarter. Wembanyama is defending Jalen Williamswho gets the big man turned inside out and beats him pretty clean to the rim. But Wemby is, first of all, so athletic that he's able turn his hips and start to recover fairly quickly, and from there, he's so long that he's still able to fly in

from outside the restricted area and still block what looked like a sure Williams layup.

Wembanyama is 7-foot-4 with an eight-foot wingspan. You can beat him, as Williams did here, and he very likely is still going to interrupt your shot, if not block it outright.

Exhibit B: A few minutes later, Wembanyama is covering Josh Giddey at the top of the key. Cason Wallace drives to the middle, and Wemby, from damn near the 3-point line, stretches, in one lunge, all the way to the free-throw line (the nail, in nerdy NBA parlance) and swipes the ball away, which leads to a run-out

dunk for his efforts.

There haven't been many 7-4 players throughout NBA history to begin with, but to be that big with that kind of reach and that kind of athleticism to put all those metrics to their fullest use, it's truly unprecedented. The ground this guy can cover has the potential to completely recode normal defensive geometry.

Wemby, in a switch-necessary league, is going to be able to cover smaller guys even if he can't always stay with them off the dribble because he can play such freakish catchup from behind (and also because it will be a chore to get off a clean jump-shot over his contests, let alone make one), and his ability to impact

all manner of shots, from all over the court, as a roving helper will be virtually limitless.

Honestly, look at this range.

The best prospects in basketball have arrived in the Nevada desert for the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League.

All 30 teams have sent squads comprised of top draft picks, rookies and other talented prospects to compete in a tournament that will last ten days. Each team will play at least five games, with the four best teams advancing to the playoffs. When all is said and done, only one team will lift the trophy and be declared

the 2023 NBA Summer League champion.

This year's event comes with plenty of buzz. No. 1 overall draft pick and generational talent Victor Wembanyama is expected to make his debut for the Spurs. The 19-year-old French phenom will more than likely get his first taste of NBA action as fans eagerly watch on.

Other big names in attendance include No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller, No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson, brothers Amen and Ausar Thompson — who went fourth and fifth overall — and last year's No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren, who will officially begin his NBA career this season after injury ruled him out of the entire

2022-23 campaign.

As always, the competition will be fierce and the talent will be on full display. The Sporting News has you covered with all the latest updates from the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League:

Summer League player gets his nuts stomped into dust after dunker lands on them

This dunk was a real ball buster.

By

Nate Hinton of the Rockets had an amazing day on Sunday ... until he had his testicles stomped into oblivion following a dunk.

Hinton was on the floor laughing following a foul, while Ed Croswell of the Jazz casually dunked the ball. Croswell hung on the rim, before dropping ... right onto Hinton’s nuts. It’s difficult to see whether the Jazz player noticed Hinton was laying below him, or whether he called out of him to move — but either way, life comes at you fast.

It takes some of the shine off an incredible game when you take a shot to the beans like this. Hinton is trying to make his mark and earn a spot on the Rockets roster this season, and honestly, his Sunday against the Jazz might have gone a long way to making that a reality. He finished with 27 points, on 9-of-16 shooting, including

44 percent from beyond the arc.

 🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀

1. Keyonte George, G, Utah Jazz

George was hyped as a top-10 pick for most of his freshman year at Baylor, but ultimately fell out of the lottery to No. 16 on draft night. If his run in Summer League is any indication, it sure feels like teams suffered from overthinking his evaluation. No rookie in Summer League was more impressive than George,

who showcased his ability to play on- or off-the-ball, hit tough shots, a sweet stroke from three-point range, and his ability to compete defensively. Before his run ended with a sprained ankle vs. the Nuggets, George had put up 21.2 points per game on impressive scoring efficiency (60 percent true shooting) across

six games in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. His masterpiece came in a 33-point, 10-assist game vs. the Clippers in Vegas.

George’s lack of top-end athletic burst often made it feel like every bucket he got at Baylor was a tough one. That didn’t look like a problem in Las Vegas: he was able to get to the cup with ease, and could always fall back on his pull-up jumper when he needed to. George still gets a bit of tunnel vision as a scorer at

times, but his comfort running offense with the ball in his hands boosts his ceiling, while his effortless spot-up stroke from deep gives him a high floor. The Jazz must feel like they got a good one at No. 16.

2. Victor Wembanyama, C/F, San Antonio Spurs

Wembanyama looked human in his Summer League debut, shooting only 2-of-13 from the field to help usher in some of the worst takes you will ever see. Fortunately, Wemby reminded everyone why he’s such a historic prospect in his second game, dominating both ends of the floor vs. Portland to finish with 27

points in 27 minutes, to go along with 12 rebounds, three blocks, and a couple three-pointers. The young Frenchman is arriving in the league with a suffocating amount of hype, but it wasn’t manufactured out of thin air. His talent really is that unprecedented.

The easiest translation for Wembanyama early in his career will come on the defensive end. At 7’5 with an 8-foot wingspan, he has all the tools to be the best shot blocker in the league. The Spurs are already using him as a “roamer” who will dart in to protect the rim as a help defender, which feels like the best role

for him for now. His offense will be full of both breathtaking plays and trying moments, and that’s all part of the plan. I’d expect him to take a lot of mid-range jumpers as a rookie, and plenty of those one-legged threes that will look amazing when they go in and frustrating when they don’t.

It’s no secret Victor Wembanyama is the hottest prospect to look out for when the 2023-24 NBA season begins. And rightfully so, because the San Antonio Spurs rookie has captivated audiences worldwide using a unique blend of size, skill, and shooting unheard of before.

With that said, we take a look below at the different facets of Wemby, including his height and wingspan, stats, and interesting facts about him most people don’t know yet.

Victor Wembanyama’s height and wingspan

How the NBA Today crew’s height compares to Victor Wembanyama 😂

One look at Wembanyama, and most people would think he stepped out of a cartoon. The rookie’s eye-catching frame resembles that of Kristaps Prozingis, Bol Bol, and Chet Holmgren.

Currently 19 years old, Wembanyama stands at 7 foot and 3.5 inches, weighs 209 pounds, and boasts a massive 8-foot wingspan. Also, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft uses size 20.5 basketball shoes every time he steps on the court to play.

Sure, those numbers may seem cartoonish, but the surprises don’t end there. There’s speculation that Wembanyama can still grow more, potentially two inches more to reach 7 foot 5, within the next two years. If that happens, expect a physique that’s truly one to behold.

Victor Wembanyama’s stats

Victor Wembanyama Drops 27 PTS in His 2nd Game | NBA Summer League 2023

Even before his first actual NBA game as a Spur, Wembanyama dominated the scene as a teenager in France. Although the French League doesn’t hold a candle to its more popular American counterpart, the fact remains that it’s still a tough competition to overcome for the 2023 NBA top overall pick.

While his first three years playing for Nanterre, Pole France, and LDLC ASVEL showed glimpses of what he can do on the court, Wembanyama’s final year playing for the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 is the one that showcased what he’s all about as a basketball player. In the span of 34 games, the French star

averaged 21.6 points on 47 percent shooting from the field, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.0 blocks per game.

What’s impressive about those numbers is that Wembanyama led the French League in points, blocks, and rebounds at age 19. Furthermore, the fact that he won MVP, Best Defender, Best Young Player, Best Blocker, and Top Scorer during the league’s regular season is evidence enough that Wembanyama is the best French baller out there right now.

Meanwhile, in the Summer League, Wembanyama played just two games. His debut was quite rough, as he finished with just nine points on 2-of-13 shooting along with eight rebounds, three assists and five blocks against the Charlotte Hornets.

In his second outing, however, Wemby showed why the Spurs made him the No. 1 pick in the 2023 Draft. Against the Portland Trail Blazers, he exploded for 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting while adding 12 boards and three blocks.

Sure enough, it looks like Wembanyama will be able to transition his game to the next level considering the promise he has shown so far in his career.

Wemby falls to mistaken identity

Victor Wembanyama Leads Metropolitans 92 To The Betclic Elite Finales! | June 4, 2023

Back when Wembanyama was 11 years old, Nanterre 92 head coach Michaël Allard was out watching a Le Chesnay Versailles game. It was during this time that he noticed Wemby on the court and mistook him for the team’s assistant coach due to him standing taller than everyone else on his team.

Allard’s assumption was quickly proven wrong when he saw Wembanyama suit up and step onto the court to play. At this point, the Nanterre 92 head coach called his club’s Under-11 program technical director about the potential star he just discovered. This would become the start of the young player’s path toward

stardom.

Athleticism runs in the Wembanyama family

Victor Wembanyama Interview After Being Selected #1 Overall In The 2023 #NBADraft

It’s a given that even at his young age, Victor Wembanyama is already making a big name for himself in the world of sports. The thing is, he isn’t the only athlete in his family.

Félix Wembanyama, Victor’s father, was a high jumper, while Elodie de Fautereau, his mother, was a former basketball player for the French national team and current coach at the Yvelinois Basketball Academy. Meanwhile, Wemby’s grandfather, Michel de Fautereau, once played for the Paris University Club basketball

team in France.

His siblings, Eve and Oscar, also play basketball. The former and eldest of the Wembanyama children plays for the Monaco Basketball Association after serving a stint with the French National Team. Oscar, the youngest of the three, has played for Nanterre 92 and even won the Under-15 French title.

With these people serving as Victor’s family, it only makes sense for the French phenom to develop such a professional attitude towards sports, even at a young age. Add his parents’ love for the game and the Spurs really did land a prodigy, not just in physical terms, but deeply integrated into Wemby’s very being as

well.

The best prospect since LeBron James

Victor Wembanyama vs. LeBron James: Who is the better NBA draft prospect?

A lot of word has been going around the past few months about Victor Wembanyama being the best young prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James. While that claim has been played around for years, there’s a pretty good chance Wemby is going to prove them all right, especially after James himself

acknowledged the French star.

Back in October last year, the four-time NBA champion said that Wembanyama’s talent is not of this world. The Los Angeles Lakers’ All-Star forward added that everybody has been a unicorn for the last two years, but in Wembanyama’s case, he sees the youngster more like an alien.

James’ thoughts about Wembanyama don't stand on shaky ground. The young star has already proven how talented he is by combining an unorthodox frame with guard-like skills, impressive shot creation, and a unique way of playing defense on the other end of the court.

Of course that also adds a ton of pressure on Wembanyama. Being compared to one of the greatest players to ever step foot on the hard court isn’t something that everyone can live up to. Nonetheless, if there is anyone who is capable of meeting those expectations, it’s certainly the new Spurs star.

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gets painfully honest on one thing he misses since US move

07/20/23

Story by Nick Meyer

The San Antonio Spurs and the team’s fans are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2023 NBA season. Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ number one overall pick, is a big reason why.

The man affectionately known as ‘Wemby’ dazzled onlookers and silenced the doubters with his second Summer League performance earlier this month. Wembanyama is said to now be working on a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar inspired weapon that could take his offense to the next level.

Recently, Wembanyama revealed one of the most difficult aspects of life in the United States. The 7-foot-5, towering presence in the front court spoke about his relationship with food in a video shared to NBA Twitter. The former resident of France has said he is trying to bulk up prior to the 2023 season.

At jus 209 pounds, many fans and fellow NBA players have begun questioning how his game will translate to the next level. NBA legend Tim Hardaway questioned Wembanyama in a take comparing him to journeyman Bol Bol recently.

In the video shown below, he shares that he is actually not a big fan of eating too much food while staring at a croissant he deemed questionable. Wembanyama added that he misses his mother’s cooking more than anything else since moving to the United States, while adding that the U.S. is like a “paradise” for

athletes.

The Spurs are set to open preseason on October 13 against the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat. Wembanyama’s development could factor in huge this season considering the lack of depth at the center and power forward positions according to the team’s final 2023 depth chart prior to the

drafting of ‘Wemby.’

1 undrafted Spurs’ Summer League player who could make 2023-24 roster

7/20/23

Story by DJ Foster

The San Antonio Spurs were the most anticipated watch at the Las Vegas Summer League and naturally became the Victor Wembanyama show. Between his exciting debut and stranger-than-fiction, welcome to America moment with Britney Spears, Wembanyama dominated headlines and drew every eyeball. Being

the most highly-regarded NBA prospect since LeBron James, and being 7-foot-3, will tend to do that.

But bubbling beneath the surface for San Antonio was the development of an undrafted player who could go on to team up with Wembanyama in San Antonio’s frontcourt this season.

The 1 undrafted Spurs’ Summer League player who could make the 2023-24 roster is Dominick Barlow.

We may be cheating a bit here. With undrafted forward Julian Champagnie recently locked up on a new four-year deal, Barlow could be the next undrafted young player to join the Spurs roster. Barlow has a qualifying offer to return on a two-way deal, and San Antonio’s front office likes his fit on the roster, according

to Paul Garcia.

The Spurs could use some help at the 5-spot, and figuring out what type of player Wembanyama best pairs with is a huge priority for this season. Does he perform best next to a floor-spacing big like Zach Collins, or a dirty-work defender like Khem Birch?

Barlow leans more toward the latter, as he plays with infectious energy and has elite athleticism. There’s a reason why he was the first Overtime Elite player to make the jump to the NBA, as there are a ton of raw physical traits for San Antonio’s coaches to work with.

Playing in the NBA at 19 years old is never easy, but Barlow made the most of his opportunity last year, as head coach Gregg Popovich told BasketballNews.com.

“Everything he’s doing now is just like a freebie. He’s gonna get these minutes and he’s gonna play and we’re gonna get to take a look at him,” Popovich said. “But he’s been one of the team favorites because of his personality and his sort of wildness on the court. ‘Cause he doesn’t really know much yet. He’s just

got these athletic skills and he’s like a whirling dervish, so to speak.”

Barlow put those skills on display at Summer League, averaging 17 points and over 8 rebounds in his four appearances.

Dominick Barlow’s rapid development thus far has been impressive. Getting those developmental reps under Popovich last season when the stakes were low should pay dividends moving forward.

Barlow also has a clear idea of what his job on the Spurs roster will be when his number is called again, as he told BasketballNews.com.

“Everybody wants to become a good offensive player, but I think defensively is the way to get out on the court,” Barlow said. “So just trying to read that and understand that certain guys can score. As long as you’re keeping them in spots where they’re uncomfortable and they have to make tough shots, you kinda

sometimes have to limit that. So just trying to learn.

“Don’t get too frustrated if a guy scores; you know you did what the scouting report says. You kinda just have to trust that sometimes. It’s hard playing defense in the NBA. It’s hard. There’s so many different looks that you see, so you kinda have to just trust your coaches, trust yourself and just give effort. Effort,

at the end of the day, will trump some of the other stuff.”

After an impressive 2023-24 Summer League performance where he regularly outworked his opponents, the Spurs should be excited to get Dominick Barlow back on the court once again this season.

Magic’s biggest concern about Anthony Black after 2023 NBA Summer League performance

Story by Tim Crean

Anthony Black and the Orlando Magic are now done with 2023 NBA Summer League, and we’ve learned some things. The supersized point guard showed off many of the skills that made him the No. 6 pick in the NBA Draft. However, he also showed his biggest weakness when it comes to shooting the ball and did

nothing to show the Magic that’s not still a concern.

The Magic’s biggest concern about Anthony Black after 2023 NBA Summer League is his shooting

Former Arkansas freshman Anthony Black played three Magic NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas and showed a lot of talent and potential. The 6-foot-7 point guard had the ball in his hands a lot during the three games he played, and he ran the offense (albeit a watered-down one) like a pro.

In the end, Black averaged 11.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in Las Vegas. And this highlights all the special things he can do.

Black is a traditional point guard in a big NBA wing’s body. His rebounding was incredible from the point guard position, and his assists numbers were respectable as well when taking into account the level of players he was playing with. The ways he scored his 33 points were impressive, too. He bullied and bodied

smaller guards down to the hoop and scored with ease at times.

Defensively, he was excellent, too. At his size, he can guard four or even five positions on the floor at most times, making him incredibly switchable and versatile. He has active hands and feet on defense as well as excellent instincts, which led to his six steals.

Overall, these three games showed what Black can do at the next level and had to make Magic brass, coaching staff, and fans excited for what will happen when the former Razorback gets on the floor with the likes of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

All that said, what was true before the Magic drafted Anthony Black is, unsurprisingly still true. He can’t shoot.

In the modern NBA, shooting seems to be the most valuable commodity. It obviously puts points on the board, which helps to win games, but even the threat of shooting is what spaces the floor and allows players more room to operate offensively. To be a top team, you need to have shooting from almost every

position and to be a top player, you need to have at least the threat of the 3-ball.

Black and the Magic have neither of these things.

The rookie point guard isn’t a great shooter, and he showed that in NBA Summer League out in Las Vegas. During his three games in the tournament, Black shot 1-of-6 from deep for a 16.7% 3-point percentage. The one he made was a falling-down bank shot he hit while getting fouled. He missed that free throw

and went 6-of-11 from the line in Vegas for a 54.5% free throw percentage.

Those aren’t great shooting numbers. In college Black shot 30.1% from behind the arc and 70.5% from the line. During his high school career in Texas, he shot in the low 60s from the charity stripe.

Black is not a good shooter, and that is the biggest remaining concern for the Magic coming out of NBA Summer League. The team needs shooting desperately, and putting more non-outside shooters on the floor will be difficult. The team finished 25th in the league last season in 3-point percentage, hitting just

34.6% of their shots from behind the arc.

Orlando tried to address that with the No. 11 pick in the NBA Draft, taking Michigan wing Jett Howard. That’s a good start, but the team needs more shooting all around the floor.

How much of a problem Black’s lack of shooting will be in the league remains to be seen. Once he gets on the court with his real teammates, that will become clearer.

On the one hand, his ability to drive to the net, post up, and play-make may make his inability to shoot less of an issue. However, several (if not all) of those skills are dependent on floor spacing, and he may not get much on Orlando.

Also, while it may not happen his rookie year, there is a chance Black will improve as a shooter, even though the underlying free throw numbers (which are often indicators) don’t suggest he will.

The most famous example of a PG who couldn’t shoot until later in his career is Jason Kidd. The Hall of Famer played 19 years in the league, and for the first half of his career, he shot in the high 20s to low 30s for 3-point percentage. In the latter stages, he hit in the high 30s or even low 40s percentage-wise.

Anthony Black may not be Jason Kidd, but if he can follow his lead when it comes to shooting, he could alleviate the Magic’s biggest concern about him after his 2023 NBA Summer League performance.

Spurs’ biggest concern about Victor Wembanyama after 2023 NBA Summer League performance

 7/17/23

Story by Tim Crean

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are now done with 2023 NBA Summer League, and we’ve learned some things. The 7-foot-5 Frenchman showed off many of the reasons the Spurs took home No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. He also did do nothing (and could do nothing) to alleviate the biggest concern

about himself.

The Spurs’ biggest concern about Victor Wembanyama after 2023 NBA Summer League is his body

The Victor Wembanyama-Spurs NBA Summer League experience seemed to have it all. He struggled at first, dominated in the end, and showed the basketball world some of his mouth-watering potential.

Wemby’s first matchup was against the No. 2 pick in the draft, Brandon Miller, and his Charlotte Hornets. While Miller put up 16 to lead all scorers, Wembanyama scored just four points and pulled down eight rebounds in over 27 minutes. He also shot 1-for-6 from behind the 3-point line.

However, there were flashes of what could be as the big man blocked five shots. And that tantalizing potential continued to show through in the second game with a big performance from Wembanyama.

The Spurs took on the No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson’s Portland Trail Blazers, although Henderson sat with a minor injury. Regardless, Wembanyama dominated the game. He finished with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, which making two of his four 3-point attempts.

After those performances, the Spurs shut Wembanyama down for the remainder of the 2023 NBA Summer League. The team and everyone else had seen enough of the giant man who plays like Kevin Durant. Wemby showed he is the evolutionary Kristaps Porzingis with more potential than Chet Holmgren, and the

best 7-foot-plus prospect to come into the NBA since Ralph Sampson in 1983.

Here’s the thing, though, about these 7 feet and over players (and yes, KD is 7 feet tall, despite preferring to say he’s 6-foot-11). They have never held up over the course of long NBA careers. And the players mentioned above all share the trait of being skinny as well'

Durant has held up the best, but he’s also the shortest by quite a bit here. He was an Iron Man early in his career but played just 27 games in 2014-15 with a foot injury. And since missing the entire 2019-20 campaign with an Achilles tendon tear, he played just 137 of a possible 236 games in the last three years.

Porzingis has an even worse track record, playing in 402 games out of a possible 636 games in eight seasons. And the super-skinny Holmgren hasn’t played in an NBA game yet after sitting out his entire rookie season with an injury.

Ralph Sampson was the worst outcome of all these players. The 7-foot-4 big man dominated in college and early in his NBA career before injuries sapped him of his explosiveness and allowed him to play just 261 out of 656 games in his last eight seasons.

Now, Victor Wembanyama got through Spurs NBA Summer League just fine, while shorter, stouter players like Scoot Henderson and Amen Thompson ended up sitting games with injuries. Still, watching Wemby, you have to worry about how he will hold up.

Wembanyama is just 207 pounds at 7-foot-5. By comparison, the NFL is extremely concerned about the No. 1 pick in its 2023 draft, Bryce Young, because the Carolina Panthers quarterback because he is only 205 pounds at 5-foot-10.

The NFL and the NBA are completely different games, obviously, but to think the No. 1 overall picks are roughly the same weight and Wembanyama is over a foot-and-a-half taller than Young is mind-boggling.

Watching Spurs Summer League, you can see the type of players that are going to give Wembanyama problems. The 6-foot-7 to 6-foot-10, 250-plus-pound forwards can muscle the Spurs’ big man, throw a hip into him, and cut him off at the knees. Players like Draymond Green, P.J. Tucker, and the Morris twins will

toss Wembanyama around like a rag doll.

Plus, the way he plays leaves him more open to injuries than other players his size. Big men at 7-foot-2-plus have always played back-to-the-basket, paint-focused games. What makes Wemby so special is that he is a perimeter player at his size. That also means he drives to the basket way more than any player his

size ever has, and that is a recipe for injuries right there.

In the end, what 2023 NBA Summer League showed us is that Wembanyama has the potential to change the game. What it didn’t show us — over the course of just two games — is how he will hold up over the grueling 82-game NBA schedule.

And that is still the Spurs’ biggest concern about Victor Wembanyama after his 2023 NBA Summer League performance.

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama reveals ‘special’ feeling about Gregg Popovich

7/17/23

Story by Quenton Albertie

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has a legitimate chance to be one of the best players in NBA history. Not only because his physique or his skillset but because he also has the mentality to be one of the all-time greats.

In his effort to reach that goal, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will be the most important teacher that he has. Subsequently, it’s imperative that both Wembanyama and Popovich get the most out of each other along this journey.

For his part, Popovich recently reupped with the Spurs on a five-year, $80 million contract that makes him the highest-paid coach in the NBA. Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, signed a four-year, $55 million rookie scale contract on Jul. 1.

So, these two will have at least that much time to work with each other. Perhaps longer, although at 74-years-old, Coach Pop is already long in the tooth.

Speaking to reporters about the relationship that he has with his new head coach, Wembanyama says that “[Popovich] cares a lot about me” (h/t Matt Guzman of Inside The Spurs).

“He talks to me every day, and to me, this is just a special chance and experience. He’s has been so successful in his life … he knows how to do it.”

“It’s really special,” Wembanyama says of playing under Popovich. “I feel like he thinks this is going to be a special time, too. I could follow him with my eyes closed.”

Given the Spurs’ history of developing star big men such as 10-time All-Star David Robinson and 15-time All-Star Tim Duncan, the expectations are high for both Wembanyama and Popovich. It of course remains to be seen if Wembanyama will wind up being a Hall of Famer too but, as the Frenchman says, this is a special chance.’

Thunder’s biggest concern about Chet Holmgren after 2023 NBA Summer League performance

7/17/2023

Story by Jay Postrado

Lanky big men in the NBA often experience the same problem when it comes to injuries. They often struggle with their foot, center of gravity, and balance because of how far they are from the ground. A recent example of this is Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder who completely lost his rookie season

after an injury against LeBron James at the 2022 Drew League. Those problems seem to be settled after his 2023 NBA Summer League stint.

Chet Holmgren is more than set to start his rookie campaign. This is a year after he got his name called in the NBA Draft. The young big man hopes to have a stable career where he does not endure the same hardships as Greg Oden and Yao Ming among other talented big men. He has undergone a year of recovery

and changing up his routine such that he fitted right back in with the NBA.

Chet Holmgren’s 2023 NBA Summer League

This seems to be successful for the young Thunder star as proven by his 2023 NBA Summer League performance He had two stints with Oklahoma during the summer. The first one was in Salt Lake City. Fans erupted as they have not gotten a peek at his performance before this. Holmgren played two games on 29.8

minutes per game. His shotmaking was not as efficient in Utah. Chet only knocked down 40.9% of the shots he took on the field but was still rewarded with 12.5 points per game. Rebounding was where he excelled due to 10 total rebounds.

A lot of his improvement was seen during his second go at the NBA Summer tournaments. His stint in Las Vegas was day and night compared to the one in Utah. The playing minutes were roughly the same but his scoring experienced a massive uptick. Chet jumped up to 20.5 points per game on average. His

shooting stroke also came alive as he knocked down 56% of his field goals.

Scoring does not seem to be a problem for the 2022 NBA Draftee but one of the big reasons for his huge draft stock seems to be missing.

The Thunder’s probable conundrum

Chet Holmgren was drafted at a high position because of his upside on the offensive side of the ball. Particularly, he was one of the best stretch big men in the nation during his college days. Gonzaga basketball allowed him to shoot from beyond the arc whenever he was open. They were rewarded with easy buckets and better

floor-spacing as big men do not sag off him when he is in the perimeter.  All of these were because of his 39% three-point field goal averages per game. The same cannot be said for him during the summer league.

The NBA requires many of its star big men to develop a serviceable outside shot so that it opens up more team strategies. Oklahoma City could benefit from this with Chet Holmgren. However, he has not shot nearly at the same level during both of his stints in the summer. He only attempted three shots from

beyond the arc in his Las Vegas run with the Thunder. Salt Lake was even worse as he attempted 2.5 shots per game from three but did not make any.

All of these do not account for the volume of shots he may take during the regular season. However, he needs to knock down more of them or he might get hounded on defense and leave Oklahoma City with improper spacing.

Victor Wembanyama hasn't played a single minute of NBA basketball, but Jerry West already thinks he's got a similar game to another legendary player.

Throughout the course of NBA history, just a handful of players have been able to leave a permanent mark on the game. We’re talking about the Michael Jordans and LeBron James of the game.

Of course, the San Antonio Spurs hope that first-overall pick Victor Wembanyama will join that list once it’s all said and done. But he’s just walking his first steps in the league.

However, even if he has yet to make his professional debut, Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West believes that the French star has a similar game to Bill Russell, which is a lot to say.

Jerry West Compares Victor Wembanyama To Bill Russell

“You rarely see someone that combines his brain and his ability,” West started. “Just watching him play, it’s an easy game for him to play, very easy and it never looks like he is working. If you watch really great players, it never looks like they’re working hard.”

“When you watch him defensively, he ruins games. He reminds me a little bit of a bigger Bill Russell with a big reach, coming from everywhere— any offensive player is gonna have to be really cautious about where he is because he’s gonna mess up some offenses that’s for sure,” West concluded.

Well, if Wemby is able to win just one third of the championships Russell won, then he’ll already have a better career than most of his colleagues. Hopefully, he’ll stay healthy and live up to that unimaginable potential.

2 biggest things Spurs learned from 2023 NBA Summer League

 07/13/2023

Story by Jack Deignan

The San Antonio Spurs have been in headlines all NBA offseason because of the once in a generation opportunity that they had to draft Victor Wembanyama number one overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. They of course capitalized on this chance, and Wembanyama has quickly become endeared to Spurs fans across the

world. Many speculated whether or not Victor Wembanyama would play in 2023 NBA Summer League given how high profile he is, but he ultimately put on the Spurs uniform for the first time. He only played in two games, but it was easy to see why he was the consensus No. 1 overall pick. While Wembanyama was

the number one storyline for the Spurs summer league, there were other players to watch that revealed a lot to San Antonio. Besides learning the truth behind their Wembanyama selection, the Spurs also learned that Julian Champagnie is a legitimate NBA scorer.

While Wembanyama won’t be playing in any more games this summer, Champagnie will be able to continue to demonstrate that he can be a pivotal aspect of the Spurs future. The Spurs in general have a very young team and will be looking pretty much anywhere to find guys to supplement Wemby for years to

come; it is a very bright future in San Antonio, but there is no resting on laurels in the quest to win an NBA championship. It would be wise for the Spurs to try and build a contender around Wembanyama as soon as possible, especially if they want to persuade him to be with the Spurs for life. Thus, the Spurs need

to take into account everything that they possibly can from NBA Summer League, including the two biggest things that they learned about Victor Wembanyama and Julian Champagnie.

*Stats via ESPN

Victor Wembanyama is the truth

In typical NBA Twitter fashion, Victor Wembanyama was roasted to the utmost degree after a rough showing in his first summer league appearance. He did not shoot well from the field on his way to nine points, eight rebounds, three steals, and five blocks. However, he showed immediately that he can impact the

game in a plethora of ways, as evidenced by his five blocks and three steals. Not to mention, his presence on the court was obvious on both ends, as it was clear that there needs to be multiple guys attuned to him at all times. The Spurs also got the win, so his rough shooting numbers weren’t given much thought.

Still, the Spurs definitely wanted to see the elite skillset that made him the No. 1 pick, and it didn’t take long until his second game to come through.

In the Spurs second NBA Summer League game with Victor Wembanyama, the French phenom went off for 27 points and 12 rebounds. This was much more like what the Spurs wanted to see and he posted this performance on a very efficient shooting night. He was 9/14 from the field and 2/4 from the three-point

line, demonstrating that even at his 7’3 frame, defenders are going to have to respect him on the perimeter. The Spurs were quick to shut him down after this contest, indicating that they had seen enough to be confident in their pick. This isn’t a surprise, as Wembanyama is the most highly touted prospect since

LeBron James. The Spurs will have learned that all of that hype is undoubtedly warranted after leaving 2023 NBA Summer League

Julian Champagnie is an NBA scorer

Julian Champagnie started to see consistent minutes for the Spurs at the end of last season and did not let them go to waste. 2023 NBA Summer League was a chance for Champagnie to prove to the Spurs that his output to end last year was no fluke, and he has done just that. In the Salt Lake City Summer

League, Champagnie averaged 29.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block per game. These are absolutely huge numbers that cemented that Champagnie is a legitimate scoring threat. Then he started the Vegas summer league by throwing down an absolutely massive poster dunk on rookie

James Nnaji; this gained some traction on social media, and now Champagnie’s name is getting thrown around as a serious potential rotation guy for the Spurs this season.

His scoring numbers have not been as high in Vegas, but Champagnie is still doing plenty to demonstrate that he deserves substantial playing time this season. Champagnie is averaging 14.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists in Vegas; these are numbers that show he is not just a scorer but an overall playmaker

too. For a team that will be looking to do everything that they can to build a contender around Wembanyama, it looks like they might have found a diamond in the rough on their own roster. Once NBA Summer League officially comes to a close, the Spurs will have learned that Julian Champagnie can be a regular

contributor on the team this season.

Lakers star LeBron James’ ESPYs announcement draws mixed reactions from NBA fans

7/12/23

Story by Angelo Guinhawa

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James confirmed at the ESPYs on Wednesday that he’s not retiring this year at least, prompting LA fans to celebrate and be excited about what’s in store for the team in 2023-24.

To recall, James sparked talks that he could opt to retire from the NBA this 2023 offseason following their Lakers’ playoff exit at the hands of the Denver Nuggets. Nikola Jokic and co. swept LeBron and the Purple and Gold in the Western Conference Finals, prompting James to say: “We’ll see what happens going

forward. I don’t know. I don’t know. I’ve got a lot to think about, to be honest — just for me personally, going forward, with the game of basketball. I’ve got a lot to think about it.”

At the ESPYs, however, James sounded confident about his future in the NBA. Compared to the frustrated LeBron everyone saw after the West Finals, the Lakers forward appeared to be in a better space mentally with a clearer focus for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

“The day I can’t give the game everything on the floor is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today,” James said at the ESPYs, sparking wild reactions from the crowd.

Sure enough, Lakers fans loved LeBron James’ declaration as well. LA headed to the offseason with James at the core of their plans, and his statement ensures there won’t be any issues in their attempt to win their second NBA championship in the Bron era.

“Lakers approached the offseason as if LeBron would be back for his 21st season. It seems like that will be case,” ClutchPoints’ Lakers reporter Michael Corvo wrote.

“Yesssssssssir 5th ring on the way,” a fan commented.

Another supporter exclaimed: “NO FAREWELL TOUR JUST YET! SEASON 21 HERE WE GO.”

Of course the critics found a way to hate on LeBron James, with some noting that they never believed him anyway and others taking offense with his announcement and the fact that he hoarded all the attention with the retirement talks.

“LeBron James at the ESPYS telling everyone that they are lucky that he will continue playing in the NBA for another season. This guy is one of the biggest narcissists I have ever seen,” one critic noted.

Another detractor said, “I think everybody had already forgotten he said he might retire because everybody knew he was lying.”

Whatever the haters say, though, the whole of LA is definitely ecstatic to see LeBron return and wear the Purple and Gold colors for another year. Hopefully, the 2023-24 season will be a different and better one compared to last campaign.

"It was kinda over the top" - Colin Cowherd sounds off on LeBron James' cringy ESPYs speech

Following Los Angeles Lakers' humiliating exit from the 2023 Western Conference Finals, LeBron James let his emotions get the better of him by hinting at retirement. However, The King ended all self-created doubt about his NBA future at ESPYs Awards and announced he'll be back for his 21st season in a speech

that didn't sit well with Colin Cowherd.

“It was kinda over the top," Colin said in the latest episode of The Herd. "Lucky for us. Standing ovation, playing to the crowd, I get it. I understand it's a star-driven league, but how about we make something cool in 2024 and beyond, an occasional moment of humility by a pro athlete? It's a little cringy. And how

'lucky' are we? There's a lot of good players in this league, and one of them just swept you.”

James returning for his 21st NBA Season

At this point, everyone is aware that James has entered the latter part of his NBA run. However, the level of play the 38-year-old has showcased at this point of his career is unprecedented, and judging by last season, there's more to come.

Moreover, with the moves the Lakers have made this summer, it is clear that the front office still thinks James is good enough to win his fifth championship next season.

Very few athletes have stayed competitive this late into their careers. Those who were able to stick around either fell off completely or put up numbers on losing teams. That's why NBA fans, even those who don't like LeBron, are aware of how lucky they are to witness such greatness at that age without James

having to remind them of it.

Chet Holmgren’s dominating Summer League and ready to make Thunder a contender

Chet Holmgren is finally healthy, and he’s already showing how he can take the Thunder to the next level.

2023 NBA Las Vegas Summer League - Oklahoma City Thunder v Indiana Pacers
Photo by Zach Beeker/NBAE via Getty Images

Chet Holmgren couldn’t help himself. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft was just months away from starting a highly anticipated rookie season when he showed up to Seattle to play in Jamal Crawford’s pro-am run. Paolo Banchero (the only player picked ahead of Holmgren in the draft) was playing, too. So

were LeBron James and Jayson Tatum. There were no real stakes in the gym that day, but Holmgren simply has no way of dialing back his competitive juices.

The gym was overcrowded, and the floor was slippery due to condensation. Still, when James attacked in transition and Holmgren was back as the only defender, the young Oklahoma City Thunder big man fought with everything he had to deny the shot. Then he came up limping.

Holmgren would be diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury and miss the entirety of what should have been his rookie year. The Thunder thrived anyway, jumping from a 24-win team to a 40-win team behind a superstar leap from guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. As the Thunder’s surge was happening, it was easy to wonder

just how much better the team would have been with Holmgren in the lineup.

Holmgren is finally healthy, and he’s using NBA Summer League to shake off the rust. On Wednesday night in Las Vegas, Holmgren issued a warning shot on both his spectacular talent and the imminent ascent of the Thunder. This is the player Oklahoma City has been waiting for.

Holmgren finished the night with 25 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, and two assists on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. It was mostly a full showcase of the all-around skill set that makes Holmgren such a two-way force on the floor, save for the fact that he missed both of his three-point attempts. Those are going

to fall eventually, and it’s only going to make Holmgren even tougher to handle.

There is no easy historical comparison for Holmgren. At 7’1 with a 7’6 wingspan, he’s fully comfortable handling the ball on the perimeter, taking threes, and making quick passing reads. Holmgren is also excellent at traditional big man skills: he’s a monster rim protector on defense, and a skilled finisher around the

rim on offense. He’s going to put an enormous amount of pressure on the rim as a roll man, and he barely has to jump to dunk with a reported 9’6 standing reach.

Yes, Holmgren is still very thin even after spending his injury year bulking up with muscle. There are going to times when he gets dunked on and the clip goes viral on social media — but that’s only because Chet tries to block everything and doesn’t care about being embarrassed. On a wider scale, Holmgren projects

as one of the very best shot blockers in the NBA one day. He’s extremely quick to the ball with his rotations, has tremendous hand placement on his blocks, and he’s never going to back down regardless of who is attacking the rim.

It’s incredible to think the Thunder’s rise last season happened without anyone resembling a real center on the roster. Of the top eight players in total minutes on Oklahoma City, only Josh Giddey — a guard — was taller than 6’6. Now a team already stacked with big guards and wings is adding a 7’1 monster inside

who can put a lid on the rim and dunk home any lob with his enormous catch radius. Of course, Holmgren’s game is so much more diverse than that.

Holmgren may not score 30 points per game at any point in his career, but he’s going to have a superstar impact regardless if he can stay healthy. Instead, Holmgren is the preeminent supersized connector of this era, someone who will do all the little things to help teams win while being taller and longer than

anyone on the court. He’ll space the floor as a shooter, keep the ball moving as a passer, hit the glass, and more than anything provide elite paint protection on defense. The only other young player with a skill set this diverse is Victor Wembanyama, and the whole world already knows he’s an alien.

The middle of July is too early for bold predictions, but let’s just say no one should be surprised if OKC takes another big leap up the standings this year. They already have a superstar in Gilgeous-Alexander, and the rest of their young core is developing wonderfully around him. The addition of Holmgren can take the

team to the next level. It isn’t out of bounds to believe this team can compete for championships in the next few years.

Holmgren has to stay healthy, of course, and that’s a big if. One of his greatest assets — his competitive spirit — can also be his downfall if he doesn’t learn to pick his spots. Hopefully a year away from the game taught him that much. If he can do it, the Thunder have the piece their rebuild has been missing.

There’s no cap on what could come next.

Victor Wembanyama signs with Kyle Kuzma's brand Barcode amidst his search for best breakfast taco:

Story by Kevin McCormick

As he gets ready for his first season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has landed his first partnership. He will be teamming up with a company founded by Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma.

During a recent interview with People magazine, Victor Wembanyama talked about finding the best breakfeast taco in San Antonio. This led to him discussing his new deal with "Barcode," a plant based fitness drink. The company is led by Kuzma and former LA Lakers director of performance Mubarak Malik. For the

2023 No. 1 pick, teamming up with this group was an easy decision.

"It was a no-brainer to choose Barcode to partner with," he says, adding that the plant-based fitness drink "really stood out" from other beverages on the market with its herbal adaptogens that work to manage stress and restore balance."

According to the company's websiteMalik spent nearly three years making the drink while working in the NBA. With a background in sports science and nutrition, he wanted to make a better alternative to other drinks out there.

"I spent 2.5 years making it and then I started giving it to the players who all liked it. After some time I started bringing it to people outside the gym and noticed that other people also liked it."

During his time in the league, Malik has worked with big name stars such as LeBron James and Carmleo Anthony.

Does Victor Wembanyama have any other endorsement deals?

Typically, the first deal NBA prospects sign after getting drafted is a shoe deal. That being said, Victor Wembanyama is in a bit of a different situation. Since he was a top player overseas before being drafted by the San Antonio Spurshe entered the league with one already secured.

Leading up to his Summer League debut against the Charlotte Hornets, news emerged regarding Wembanyama's endorsements. While playing in France, he agreed to a multi-year deal with Nike. Everything from that deal is expected to carry over into his NBA career.

CAN CONFIRM: #1 pick Victor Wembanyama is already officially signed to Nike.

"Wemby" first signed with Nike during his pro career in France and the multi-year footwear & apparel endorsement deal will carry over into his early NBA career. https://t.co/0lc8eRkFWN

It may be confirmed that Wembanyama has a deal with Nike, but the details are unknown. This opens the door for him potentially becoming a sneaker free agent in the early stages of his career.

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama offers bold take that will catch attention of Zion Williamson, Paolo Banchero

7/12/2023

Story by Eva Geitheim

San Antonio Spurs’ 2023 Draft No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama is setting some lofty goals ahead of his rookie season.

When asked on what would be a successful rookie year for him, Wembanyama told ESPN, “I’ve been looking into all the data of the past years, the past number one picks, and what impact they’ve had. I’m trying to be better than every guy before me.”

From a team perspective, Wembanyama also said in the interview he wants to have a “better record for my team than last year.”

The 7-foot-5 center from France is not only the tallest player currently in the NBA, but he is also one of the most hyped prospects ahead of the draft in recent history. He already has huge expectations placed on him thanks to his incredible stature and talent. But now, he is only setting them higher.

Two of the best number one picks in recent memory include Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero. Zion made the NBA All-Rookie First Team as a rookie with the New Orleans Pelicans, while Paolo Banchero earned the NBA Rookie of the Year award with the Orlando Magic.

While Victor Wembanyama won’t make his season debut until October when the regular season begins, he gave fans a preview playing in two Summer League games. After a rough first outing versus the Charlotte HornetsWembanyama shined in a promising loss to the Portland Trail Blazers as he put up 27 points and 12 rebounds.

However, that would be Wembanyama’s last appearance for the summer as it was announced he would be shut down for the remaining duration of the Summer League.

2023 NBA free agency grades for every Spurs signing

The Spurs made a few minor moves in free agency, keeping 3 players in town. Here are the grades for those moves.

 7/12/23

Story by Jedd Pagaduan

Drafting Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft alone makes the San Antonio Spurs a resounding winner of the offseason. But with the Spurs entering free agency with boatloads of cap space, there was a possibility that the Spurs could have added a few pieces here and there to bolster

the team’s chances of making some noise next season.

However, in the end, despite the Spurs’ abundance of room, they did not end up being major players in free agency. Instead, they wisely used their cap space to absorb unwanted contracts from other teams for draft compensation. Inserting themselves into the Grant Williams sign-and-trade, in particular, was a

stroke of genius from the Spurs front office.

That is not to say that the Spurs have not made any moves in free agency. They decided to re-sign starting point guard Tre Jones to a two-year, $20 million deal, bringing back a piece who has emerged in importance for the team. Moreover, they signed Julian Champagnie, a player who was on the team on a two-

way deal last year, to a four-year, $12 million deal to keep him in town for the long haul.

Those moves, at first glance, may not be the most inspiring. But here’s why the Spurs fared well with those deals nonetheless.

Here are grades for the Spurs’ moves during the 2023 NBA free agency period.

Spurs Fiesta 5: San Antonio Hits 'Lottery Jackpot' with Victor Wembanyama

Spurs’ phenom Victor Wembanyama’s Gregg Popovich response to playing more in Vegas Summer League

7-10-23

Story by Alex House

Everyone can stop panicking. Order has been restored. After a rough NBA Summer League debut for San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 overall pick reminded fans of the salivating talent that earned him near-unprecedented praise in the months leading up to the NBA Draft.

He put on a show in Las Vegas Sunday, scoring 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, grabbing 12 rebounds and recording three blocks in the Spurs’ 85-80 loss. Wembanyama’s stumbles against the Charlotte Hornets quickly faded from memory, as he solidly found his Summer League sea legs. A strong outing, in which the

French center showcased strong awareness, movement and offensive touch, bares asking an important question. Does the team need to see anything more from him in Vegas?

It was always assumed that Wembanyama would play an abbreviated sample size. He has already faced professional-level competition en route to winning MVP honors in France’s LNB Pro A last season and may not require the extensive warm-up period other prospects do. The 19-year-old is fully committed to

pushing through the rest of NBA Summer League action, but he knows it is a decision that must be made in conjunction with his legendary head coach.

“I know I got to talk with Pop {Gregg Popovich},” Wembanyama said, per ESPN’s Andrew Lopez. “I’m going to listen to what he’s going to say, but I’m ready to make any sacrifice for the team and give 100%.”

In addition to going through the draft process and getting acclimated with his new team, Victor Wembanyama recently played high-stakes basketball with the Metropolitans 92, who fell short in the French league Finals in mid-June. Popovich does not want to put too much stress on his new prized pupil’s body.

The Spurs’ longtime leader just signed a five-year contract extension and did so presumably to coach the next potential NBA megastar. He will not want to jeopardize this unforeseen, golden opportunity late in his career.

NBA feels Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama effect with historic Summer League numbers

7/11/2023

Story by Jay Postrado

Alot of great players have fans before even entering the NBA. They are often dubbed as generational talents and the San Antonio Spurs have just landed one in Victor Wembanyama. The NBA experiences an uptick in ratings, ticket sales, merchandise, and coverage just because of the hype. Did they achieve that

goal in the NBA Summer League?

Victor Wembanyama started his NBA Summer League campaign with the Spurs. He did have a rocky start but eventually pulled through. It is still a question of whether he will consistently perform at this amazing pace but some things are undeniable. He brings in a lot of cash to the league.

The rookie from San Antonio was front and center in the second most-watched Summer League debut of all time. His game averaged 1,386,000 viewers at a time. It also peaked at 1,632,000 spectators during one point of the broadcast, per Ben Cafardo of ESPN.

Fans were in for a treat for a treat in these past games. The Alien averaged a double-double in his first few games. He racked up 18 points per game and coupled it with some effective board crashing. Rebounding totals of 10 boards per game prove why he can use his height advantage.

Protecting the rim is also one of his specialties. The Spurs rookie racked up an average of four blocks in every matchup he saw on the court. All of these impressive numbers were done in nearly just 27 minutes of playing time.

Are you joining the Victor Wembanyama hype train?

Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama’s brutally honest admission on constantly dealing with media

7/10/23

Story by Peter Alexis

Victor Wembanyama has been the talk of the NBA during his brief yet eventful tenure since being drafted first overall by the San Antonio Spurs in June.

The 19-year-old frenchman has the weight of the sports world on his shoulders, facing expectations not seen since LeBron James in 2003. He played his first summer league game, and went a dreadful 2-for-13 from the field, drawing criticism across the internet and from the press.

“I want to be on the court and play basketball. I don’t want to do all this. It’s part of the business, but basketball first.”

Wemby was able to bounce back strong and put up 27 points in his second game, but the Spurs decided to shut him down for the rest of the Summer League.

His agent said he’s never had a client step up and say he wanted to tone it down, and focus on the sport that matters, per Marc J. Spears of Andscape.com.

“Hey, basketball first. Slow down everything. I don’t want to do anything. I want to play basketball,” Wembanyama told agent Bouna Ndiaye.

If it is any indication on how much pressure Wembanyama is facing, there is an entire category on DraftKings Sportsbook entitled “Wemby,” focused on special props for the rookie to get 45+ points in any game, or the Spurs to get 40+ regular season wins.

It remains to be seen if Wemby and the Spurs can accomplish any of these feats, as they face long odds to compete for the playoffs and a championship. But the youngster is taking positive steps to create a healthier relationship with the media amid all of the fanfare, and will need a strong team around him to help

deal with the spotlight.

Victor Wembanyama officially shutdown for the remainder of the 2023 NBA Summer League

Wembanyama had a mixed performance in the two games he played. In his debut against the Charlotte Hornets, he struggled and only recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 steals while shooting a disappointing 17% from the field.

However, he showcased his potential in the following matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring 27 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots on an efficient 9-for-14 shooting.

The 2023 NBA first-overall pick points out his busy schedule as the reason why he didn't have a good start in the NBA Summer League and he hopes to focus on playing basketball.

"In the past month, I think basketball wasn't even 50% of my schedule. I can't stand it. I know it's a special moment in my life, but I'm glad it's over. I just wanna hoop," said Wembanyama to the media.

Over the past month, Victor Wembanyama has been taking care of a lot of obligations off the court.

Now with a couple of Summer League games under his belt, @DonHarris4 asked Victor about basketball being his sole focus.

Victor Wembanyama’s agent admits Britney Spears incident is Spurs rookie’s ‘Welcome to America’ moment

7/11/2023

Story by Jay Postrado

Victor Wembanyama has been surrounded by the media ever since he declared for the NBA Draft. Things got a little more heated for the San Antonio Spurs rookie during the NBA Summer League as he was clouded with controversy due to the incident with Britney Spears.

The star rookie for San Antonio has been all over people’s pages and social media recently. It started off with a trending shootaround at the Spurs’ facility because of his missed shots. Another controversy arose after his NBA Summer League debut where fans were already calling him a bust. The most impactful and

loud controversy that he was involved in was between his security personnel and Britney Spears.

Victor Wembanyama’s agent outlined what this meant for the young star, via Marc J Spears of Andscape.

“The Britney Spears [incident] was a very good ‘Welcome [to] America’ moment. Small in a sense, but big in a sense. That was nothing. But there was so much noise for nothing and it turned into something … He was just walking. He didn’t do anything. But it shows you in America, everything is much bigger than

anywhere else in the world,” he declared.

A lot of things can change due to the transition from the French league to the NBA. However, the Spurs know a thing or two about not getting involved in these terrible situations. Even Wemby admitted that he does not like the massive public relations shift.

Will he be the next quiet NBA and non-controversial superstar after this like Tim Duncan?

Viral Victor Wembanyama-Britney Spears incident video has Spurs fans piling up on pop icon

 7/7/23

Story by Angelo Guinhawa

Victor Wembanyama and Britney Spears have been the talk of the town in recent weeks after the alleged slapping incident involving the San Antonio Spurs rookie and pop icon. The video of the incident, which has since gone viral, have sparked fans to take sides though.

For those who missed it, Spears was allegedly struck by a member of Wembanyama’s security team when she attempted to get the attention of the youngster. Initial reports stated that Spears tapped Wemby on his back before a member of the youngster’s security backhanded the singer. The force reportedly caused

Spears to fall to the ground, all while knocking her glasses off.

In the new video that emerged, though, Spears was unable to reach Wembanyama as he was stopped by the security. While there does seem to be a little bit of force, however, Spears didn’t fall in the interaction.

With that said, plenty of Spurs fans sided with Wembanyama. Some noted that the story has been exaggerated, while others shared that Spears should have known better not to swarm other celebrities and personalities.

“Well she should leave people alone,” a commenter said. Another one added, “But the security guard didn’t slap her either. Looks like he just flung his arm back and it hit it her. I don’t even think he turned around. She made it seem as if he slapped her across the face intentionally so hard that she fell to the floor.

Way exaggerated, clearly why the police did not follow up with an arrest. Moving on.”

“Not picking a side here. But what I am saying is She should’ve known not to run up from behind on anybody that has security like that. She’s pretty familiar with security guards and how it works. What would her security do if that was someone running up on her. Just saying…” a third Twitter user said.

Others noted that the security team could have handled the situation better. After all, there was really no immediate threat to Wembanyama and Spears was simply being a fan.

Fortunately, no charges were filed against Victor Wembanyama and his security team. It remains to be seen how the video will change things, though hopes are high both sides learned their lessons,

Naturally, there's still room for development on defense. At times, Wembanyama was overly aggressive when he was late to the play, resulting in a pair of and-1s for

Charlotte.

We'll see whether Wembanyama plays on Sunday (San Antonio-Portland, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2) in Las Vegas or is shut down in order to prepare for the grind of the regular season. Either way, it's reasonable to expect there won't be many nights like Friday ahead as part of Wembanyama's development.

Bronny James’ fiery 6-word message will get USC fans hyped

6/28/23

Story by Quenton Albertie

Maybe it should have been expected, given the nature of the world as we know it today, but with the once beloved Bronny James has now become the target of increasingly vocal doubters and detractors.

Of course, there will always be a chorus of people in the peanut gallery that want Bronny to fail simply because they have an ingrained (and potentially unhealthy) hatred of LeBron James. There are others still that believe that LeBron is the reason that Bronny has received the opportunities that he has thus far.

While there can be no doubt that having arguably the greatest basketball player of all-time that deep in your corner comes with inherent benefits, the picture being painted of Bronny is quite simply that he doesn’t belong. A message that hasn’t fallen on deaf ears, with the four-star USC commit taking to social

media to drop to the mic.

"Can't wait to prove y'all wrong." Bronny James dropped this on his IG story (:📸 bronny/IG)

Image

“Can’t wait to prove ya’ll wrong,” he writes on Instagram, appearing to be practicing his shooting inside of the Trojans men’s basketball gym.

A combo guard who has demonstrated his worth as a shooter, playmaker, and defender, the pushback against James is interesting because there hasn’t been an actual assessment of why he doesn’t belong at USC or why he can’t excel in the NBA. While not the most physically impressive guards, nor an all-world

ball-handler, Bronny has developed into a niche player with a projectable role as he continues his basketball journey.

The Trojans have yet to release their schedule for the 2023-24 season. Nonetheless, with USC scheduling a few exhibition games abroad in the near future, Bronny’s time is just around the corner.

All 30 First Round Picks Of The 2023 #NBADraft

NBA Draft grades 2023: All 30 teams ranked from best (Spurs) to worst (Clippers)

The 2023 NBA Draft has come and gone, meaning it's time to break down the picks.

There are a few things to consider when reacting to how a franchise did on draft night. Did the team select the best talent available or did they draft to fill a need? Did they reach for a certain prospect or did they land a diamond in the rough who fell later in the draft than originally expected? Did the moves each

franchise made make sense for the direction and timeline of their current roster?

Keeping those things in mind, The Sporting News ranked all 30 teams, giving each franchise an overall grade for their activity on draft night.

1. San Antonio Spurs

Grade: A+

Picks: Victor Wembanyama (#1), Sidy Cissoko (#44)

The Spurs won the NBA Draft the second they landed the No. 1 pick in the lottery. In addition to a generational talent like Wembanyama, San Antonio landed a talented two-way prospect in G League Ignite wing Cissoko in the second round.

Spurs' Victor Wembanyama to Wear No. 1 Jersey After Being 1st Pick in 2023 NBA Draft

Victor Wembanyama was No. 1 in the 2023 NBA draft. Now, he will be No. 1 on the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama is set to wear No. 1 in Texas, per Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix.

He will be the first Spurs player to don the digit since Lonnie Walker IV wore the jersey during the 2021-22 season.

Wembanyama wore No. 1 while dominating the French league with 21.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season. That's why some fans at Barclays Center Thursday night already had custom-numbered Spurs jerseys ready for him to sign before the draft even took place.

Wembanyama said his jersey number is a reference to both Magic Johnson and his mentality.

"I don't want to leave others behind or put anyone down, but I want to be the first, the number one," Wembanyama told French news outlet Le Parisien in December (h/t the Mirror.)

After his selection at the top of the board, Wembanyama's No. 1 jerseys were unveiled for sale.

Here’s a look at the first officially NBA licensed Victor Wembanyama Spurs jerseys.

2. Portland Trail Blazers

Grade: A+

Picks: Scoot Henderson (#3), Kris Murray (#23), Rayan Rupert (#43)

The Trail Blazers landed the second-best player in the draft with the No. 3 pick. Henderson is going to be a future All-NBA caliber talent and he'll (potentially) get to learn from franchise cornerstone Damian Lillard. Portland continued to add to its roster later in the draft, selecting a win-now 3-and-D forward in Murray

and a long-term development project in Rupert, who I had as a first-round grade.

5. Charlotte Hornets

Grade: A+

Picks: Brandon Miller (#2), Nick Smith Jr. (#27), James Nnaji (#31), Amari Bailey (#41)

Even though I thought Henderson was the right pick, there is no denying Miller is a perfect fit next to franchise point guard LaMelo Ball as a versatile, sharpshooting wing. Charlotte's draft only got better as the night went on.

It landed a former top prospect in Smith Jr., who was once projected to be the first college player selected in this draft before a knee injury derailed his freshman season. The Hornets also nailed the second round, snagging a high-upside big man from Barcelona in Nnaji, and a promising two-way guard in Bailey.

Some Charlotte Hornets fans do not appear to be thrilled with the team’s selection at No. 2 overall.

Boos from the audience at the Spectrum Center

The Hornets picked former Alabama star forward Brandon Miller with their lottery choice in Thursday’s NBA Draft. The move for Miller, the 2023 SEC Player of the Year, sets up a nice long-term partnership with Charlotte star LaMelo Ball.

Unfortunately, though, a number of fans weren’t too welcoming. Local radio host Kyle Bailey, who was at Spectrum Center in Charlotte for a draft watch party, reported that Miller was booed by the “overwhelming majority” of Hornets fans at the arena. Bailey further characterized the reaction of the fans to the Miller

pick as “stunned.”

Chris Lea of WRAL-TV in Charlotte also shared a video of the boos raining down in the arena when the Miller pick was announced.

Gonzaga's Drew Timme goes undrafted in 2023 NBA Draft

 Story by Henry Krueger

Former Gonzaga All-American Drew Timme was not among the 58 players who heard their name called at Thursday’s 2023 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

As an undrafted free agent, Timme will still likely land an NBA opportunity through a two-way contract, a Summer League deal or an Exhibit 10 contract.

Going undrafted is not a surprise for Timme, who was not listed in most recent mock drafts. His former teammate Julian Strawther was drafted in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.

HOW NBA EXECUTIVES VIEW TIMME

Experts questioned Timme’s physical profile and his lack of a 3-point shot during the predraft process. Timme was measured at 6-foot-8 without shoes at the NBA Combine after being listed at 6-foot-10 during the college season.

His frame is considered undersized for an NBA big man, especially one that cannot stretch the floor with 3-point shooting. Timme shot 25.3% from deep in four seasons at Gonzaga.

As a senior, Timme averaged 21.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He also became Gonzaga’s all-time leading scorer and was named CBS National Player of the Year.

Leading up to the draft, Timme worked out for several organizations, including the Los Angeles, Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks.

Malachi Smith, who was also a member of last season’s Gonzaga squad, joins Timme as an undrafted free agent.

While Nikola Jokic might not be as expressive as his peers on the NBA hardwood, the two-time MVP is still undoubtedly the kind of leader the Denver Nuggets desperately searched for.

During the most recent episode of the ‘Ticket & Truth’ podcast,’ host Kevin Garnett highlighted how ‘The Joker’ was barely visible in the team’s championship picture, letting his teammates fetch all the limelight and glory.

“Joker looks like the most humblest motherf**ker I've ever seen. He's a one-of-one. I've never seen the championship picture being taken with your best player in the third row of the picture,” Garnett told Paul Pierce.

KG loves the team-first mentality from Jokic

As ‘The Big Ticket’ pointed out - Jokic has thrived because of his humility and unflappable demeanor, securing the most minimal spotlight even in the championship parade.

Even when Michael Malone’s team won their first-ever championship, the Serbian was quick to uplift Kentavious Caldwell Pope’s stature. Jokic intentionally crashed into the 30-year-old’s press conference to remind everyone how he is a 2-time NBA Champion.

Solidifying himself as one of the greatest centers of all time after averaging a triple-double throughout the 2023 playoffs, this 28-year-old deservingly has an opportunity to ascend even higher as his career progresses.

Serbia hails Jokic with an epic billboard

After conquering the league in the most oozing manner, Jokic headed back to Sombor, where his beloved horses anxiously await. However, fans put up a special billboard for the reigning NBA Finals MVP, celebrating his grandeur.

That being said, Serbia is now a certified land of champions. From Novak Djokovic winning his 23rd Grand Slam (most of all time) after beating Casper Ruud in the French Open Final, Jokic is the latest to add another illustrious award to the pride of their country.

Viral video of Nugget center Nikola Jokic shows he played exactly same way as kid

6/15/23

Story by Trevor Booth

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic cemented his claim as the best basketball player in the world. The Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals and finished with an impressive 16-3 playoff run.

Jokic was named Finals MVP after he averaged 30.2 points on 58.3 percent shooting (42.1 percent from 3-point range), 14.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the series. He is becoming one of the best big men of all-time thanks to his passing and overall offensive talent.

Thursday, a viral video surfaced of Jokic’s play as a kid. He dribbles the ball up the floor, attacks the offensive glass and passes in transition.

He seems to have never wavered from his strengths. Now, he’s a champion.

Jokic’s reign as the NBA’s best player is not likely to end soon. The Nuggets have him, guard Jamal Murray and forward Michael Porter Jr. under contract through 2024-25. Jokic has won two MVP awards and could win more thanks to his skill set.

Denver is also coached by Michael Malone, who has raised the Nuggets’ core and wants to be around for more title runs.

Jokic grew up in a difficult situation. Shortly after he was born, the NATO bombed Serbia for 11 weeks. Jokic was raised in a two-bedroom apartment that he shared with his parents, brothers and grandmother.

“I remember things like sirens, bomb shelters, always turning off the lights,” Jokic said in an interview with Bleacher Report. “We practically lived in the dark. Even at like 9 a.m., everything was turned off.”

Earlier this week, Jokic and his family got to celebrate an NBA championship after a difficult season in their life. The Nuggets have their championship parade Thursday.
